The holes weren't for a nail to go into a longer handle?

This video shows us how NOT to "restore" something like this. Next time, with a saw like this, get a brush wheel for your grinder, then put a chunk of 2x4 in your vice and use the tooth spacing to screw it to the 2x4. Once you have the saw secured to the wood, use the brush wheel down the length moving the screws as needed. After that, use the rust remover in a large enough container to FULLY submerge the item, then and only then do you take sandpaper to it to remove anything left behind. after the sandpaper comes the filing to get in between the teeth and to sharpen the tooth ends. And the last step (unless you make/get a handle for it) is to spray it down with an oil based protectent to keep it from rusting again. Following these steps, or other steps by professionals, will keep you from wrecking your arm cleaning the thing with sandpaper and a toothbrush, and will go a long way to help your image in the restoration community because what's displayed here only hurts your standing...
