I was always disappointed that the Vita versions were just ports of the 3DS games. Maybe I’m just an armchair developer here, but Sony pushed the Vita as being capable of running the same games as PS3, and I will say there are some stellar PS3-to-Vita direct ports out there. Would’ve been crazy to see the console version of Lego Batman 2 running on a handheld

PS3 games that looked and ran GREAT on Vita: Dead or Alive, Marvel vs Capcom 3, Rayman Origins and Legends, Sly Thieves in Time, there are many more. No excuse really when it came to Lego's Vita versions

The psp also had to put up with that kind of laziness as well. But I think it’s even WORSE since the first couple of Lego games used the console versions to port into the psp

Guess it was because the Vita wasn't selling well. Why invest money and effort into a game that wouldn't be that successful? Hell, by making the Vita version better they'd even be risking handicapping the 3DS version's sales by making it obsolete when that was the one handheld version pretty much guaranteed to sell well.

honestly they might've as well ported the Wii version to the Vita
pretty sure they were comparable powerwise, and the Vita even has a higher resolution than the Wii

This is a small thing but, Chima actually lasted the *standard* amount of time for a Lego original IP, 2.5 years, 5 waves. That's normal. Ninjago originally ended like that to be followed up with Chima, but the insane backlash from the unexpectedly huge Ninjago community brought it back to the undying juggernaut it is today. It's only if a theme lasts LESS than 2.5 years it was officially considered a failure (Bionicle Generation 2, Lego Dimensions, Hidden Side). Chima didn't set the world on fire like Ninjago did, but it had a respectable enough run for what it was.

God, I love Chase Begins. Not as much as the original console version, but for a handheld version it does a very respectable job of keeping the best elements from its sister, even if scaled down. And using the limitations to not just tell an abridged version of the console version story, but its own extra little story that makes for a good companion piece if you want more of that world? Yes please, genius move.
I...don't really like the LEGO Movie's portable game, and I'm surprised that's the *improved* version of that formula. Way too monotonous for me to finish.

I actually liked the Chima game. By then I hadn't played a LEGO game since the first Batman and Chima pretty much brought back just about everything I liked about those games, and being about an original IP was a breath of fresh air.
Fun fact: Chima has an "infinite air" glitch similar to what Jar and the Fetts could do in TCS. If you select a character with a fist weapon (ex. the Gorilla or Armor Cragger) if you get to a ledge and start punching non-stop the character will just keep floating on air.

Like they mentioned: they didn't like the direction they were going in but didn't really have a choice. Thank you for covering these games! I remember getting LEGO Marvel for my Vita after having fun with Batman 2, Harry Potter 5-7 and Chima. I was so disappointed. The game was such a chore to 100%. I hate it. Dying resets the whole level, characters can't be added mid-level, the level design is boring with every level requiring multiple playthroughs or those speedrun/multi-challenges just put me off. I ended up finishing it anyways, but it was so boring. May I also add the fact, that the Vita version's trophy list extended this boring game to infinity with trophies like "kill a character with that character in that level" or "finish a level with that character". One of the worst games, I've ever played. Thankfully, the later ones are way better. My favourites are the ones with only 5 challenges, like Jurassic World, Ninjago: Shadow of Ronin, Batman 3, Avengers or Star Wars: TFA. Avengers and Star Wars had some really nice hub worlds :)

I bought The Lego Movie and wasn't that impressed, and given the price and rarity of physical Vita games, I don't want to buy more of them blindly without knowing what to expect.
The choice to only give one life per level makes sense to lengthen the playtime but MAN does it get annoying. Having to redo multiple puzzles or an enemy gauntlet just because I accidentally walk off an edge feels bad even as an adult, I think I'd've thrown my console at a wall as a child :D

Actually, lego did release a Ninjago game before the Chima game, it was the lego battles Ninjago game that came out in 2011 for the ds. Pretty fun game, even thought it's an "updated" version (I think) from the original lego battles

    • @CamReviews

That one was done by Hellbent games rather than TT Fusion, I should've been more specific. But yes it's basically an updated version of Lego battles but it's pretty fun :)

Now this is the kind of series i needed. Grew up with super fun Lego games on PS3 and ive been really curious about Lego games on the Vita i picked up recently. Then i heard they were "just ports of 3ds games" and assumed theyd all be bad. But nice to see a detailed video about them. Might actually pick up one or two of em depending on how the rest of the games fair in your video(s)

Honestly, LEGO Batman 2 was the only handheld game that I enjoyed more than the console. Sure the level design wasn't as great, but the roster was massive, the character customizer was by far and away the most advanced prior to LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2, and mini games were fantastic. Don't get me wrong, I love exploring Gotham in a Pumpkinmobile, but I really loved being able to glide without needing a specific suit for it, play as Deathstroke, or spray people with fear toxin as Scarecrow.
Also, I would also like to say that Troy Baker's performance as Batman has never been as good as when he played in LEGO Batman 2, LEGO Batman 3, and Batman vs TMNT. In most of the LEGO Batman mini movies he's done, he mostly only uses his Bruce Wayne voice, and in Batman Telltale, he just uses a voice modulator. And the LEGO Batman 2 tie-in movie is one of my favorite DC movies since World's Finest, Batman vs TMNT, and the second half of The Killing Joke.

It would be cool if you review the Lego GBA games. If you want to review the Lego games that where more like traditional Lego games you should review Lego Bionicle Heroes and both Lego stars wars games. Those are the only Lego games on GBA that follow the modern formula. The other Lego games on GBA where released before the first Lego Star Wars.

I honestly regret not getting Lego City for 3ds since I assumed it was going to be really bad and be nothing like the Wii U version especially since I really wanted it at the time but after the first Harry Potter being so bad I swore off all the portable Lego games especially since I had a 360 so I didn't have a need to buy the portable versions like I did when I first got into games since all I had was a DS

I absolutely loved lego the hobbit on ds as a kid. I had the DS version before the console version and I actually kind of prefer in a few ways. I like the challenge of only having one life, and building little structures on the overworld was just so much fun to me as a kid.

I was a fan of the chima show along with ninjago as a child. I watched a youtuber play the chima game and It looked fun because you can play as characters from the show.
Legends of chima was very underrated and I'm disappointed that it didn't continue like ninjago has.

I recently encountered a glitch in the 3DS version of Lego Lord of the Rings, where I grabbed Gimli as Legolas to throw him against a breakable object he's required for in a gloomy village and somehow yeeted Gimli outside the skybox and into the stratosphere, if not beyond that. What I find so funny about it is that this could be canon if it were possible because of their relation.

As a kid, I've mostly gotten the handheld ones first and then the console game. They weren't all bad but if I had to make a comparison: It would be like coming to class where we read a novel and everyone got a copy and you ended up with a badly beaten up copy. At least that's the best I've got.

I don't know if you've already covered them but there's also LSW 1 and 2 on the GBA which predates all the DS & PSP games. I wonder if you'll ever review those games or even any of the other Lego GBA games as it be real nice to see more in depth coverage of those games like you do in reviewing the Lego games form the other handhelds as I feel the GBA games are even more obscure than the games from the later portable consoles.

I actually stumbled onto this video wile replaying marvel universe in peril, I had it as a kid and never finished it, but genuinely Lego marvel avengers is a great port for the 3ds and vita, (I only mention this because I didn’t see it in the beginning and side note I’m only a minute into the video) but I remember as a kid I was blown away that it was actually pretty close to the main version missing most of the extra content but having all of the main game and even New York to explore
