"For some people-" Me! I was some people! This game introduced me to SO much Batman lore and Batman characters like Nightwing, Zsaz, Two-Face, Killer Croc, Firefly, and Scarcrow- some of which are now my favourites. And it introduced me to Danny Elfman's Batman score! Pretty sure this game is one of the reasons I love the Animated Series so much. I even remember playing the villain hunt mode but the time limit stressed me out so I didn't do it often.

This brings back memories! I’m particularly fond of the Bane fight, where he pushes shipping containers together to try and crush you between them and you have to escape before he does. Mechanically simple, sure, but a unique and fun idea, especially compared to the vehicle level or whatever it was in the console version.

One of my favorite childhood games ! I LOVED how you could play as Batman and Robin, OR as the villains... Like others have said, this was my introduction to a lot of Batman characters : Zsasz, Nightwing, Man-Bat...
Fun fact : he first time I got to the scarecrow boss fight, I started panicking when the screen turned all green and toxic-like. I thought the game had been hacked or corrupted.
I asked my parents and godmother for help. Turns out you just had to blow into the sides. Yeah, some DS games had you use the stylus, but also blow into tiny holes to simulate wind or breathing, activate mecanisms, etc. Underrated feature!!!

  • @frogmouth2

If you 100% the game on home console, azreal, black mask, huntress all have their parts unlocked in the character creator. Unfortunately a lot of the other ones like firefly or hugo strange got no such luck.
Although I’m sure you have hundreds of other comments saying that.
Also personally I grew up with both of them and I can 100% say I think they’re both great in they’re own rights. Like oddly enough the fatalities batman dolls out are a lot more gruesome in the dc version. Such as melting apart someone’s very being, in asking someone inside a solid block of gold, ramming a roller coaster cart into someone. There was never a dull moment in those comics.

I remember that this game actually made me into a Batman fan as a kid. ^^
Also, I remember that in Co-op mode, both players' studs were split. Friendly fire was also a thing...
This would sometimes result in me and my sister stealing eachother's hard-earned studs when we'd die and then fighting about it. XD

  • @BlackMesaEmployee

the changes in the mission names are really interesting, because the names used in the DS version actually *are* used behind the scenes in the main console versions. Within the game files the names used on DS are also used to refer to the same levels on the main version, which makes me think the DS version was based on an older version of the game before they'd figured out the level names, or was developed in isolation to it with only a design doc or something like that to work off of - this would also explain some of the more major differences such as with the greater number of unlockable characters.

I am hanging on by a thread to my memories of a mobile platformer version of Lego Batman that my mom had on her Nokia phone when I was about 5 yrs old. I remember barely being able to get past the 1st level and a version of Joker with a shorter hair piece, but now I'm having doubts as to if it was even a Lego Batman game, because for the love of me I can't find anything on it on the Internet.

The majority of ds lego games feel like cheap knock-off versions of their console counterparts. But lego Harry Potter years 1-4 for the ds is a very different experience from the console version. It has different mechanics, different level design, readable dialogue, and it even takes some stuff from the books that wasn't in the movie. Like peeves the poltergeist is a character in it.

I didn’t get my until 360 late into its life and even then didn’t think to get LEGO Batman for some reason but tbh it was probably because I had this as a kid.
When I was 6 my uncle gave me his DS for my birthday and a week or 2 later and instead of getting a LEGO set I took my mom to the video game isle were I saw this Masterpiece just chilling behind the glass doors at Walmart.
Was the first video game I purchased at a store ever and the best part was when I got home and played it. I was blown away!
Looking back at it now I just have to thank the developers because it could have just been an easy cash grab but it wasn’t, they did not have to go that hard but they did and because of their efforts I have so many fond memories today.

What's interesting to me is that, even though the mission names are lackluster, the chapter names are actually better on the DS. Instead of "The Riddler's Revenge," it's "Billion Dollar Riddler," and instead of "The Joker's Return," it's "The Joker's Last Laugh." "Power-Crazed Penguin" is still the same, but that was a hard asf name to begin with
