Has this latest model retained a satisfying BMW driving feel, or is it just boring 5 seat CUV in the most crowded market segment. Join us for a winter test drive and a discussion of the best in this part of the market.

    I wish I could like the gv70 but it looks like an amc pacer in the back. Idrive 7 is my favorite infotainment system - not sure what you’re on about with Mercedes and genesis having better systems. Mercedes systems are truly confusing and the genesis system is fine but lacks the quick and versatile control knob. Also love that you can use those preset buttons on the bmw to instantly navigate to any screen in the system (or set a destination, dial a certain number, etc). I don’t own a bmw currently so I’m not saying this out of bias.

    The value for the X3 M40i is insane when you buy a 2020 or 2021 with low miles. Just picked one up for $39k with 19k miles. One owner no accidents with m differential. You can get even better deals on the 2018 or 2019 ones, but they don't have the same supra engine. I also own a 2017 M2 and gotta say the smiles per gallon in the X3 M40i is really close to my M2

    I rented a car for the drive from Vancouver to Whistler this winter, and got lucky that the only thing they had left with winter tires was an X330. I was very surprised by it. Even with the 4 cylinder engine, it was fast, fun and comfortable. It confidently crushed the curvy road to Whistler. It wasn't as fun as the 2008 325i we had years ago, but it was way more fun and comfortable than the 2018 330GT that we had recently.

    Biggest complaint about the X3 M40 is the harsh ride on stock runflat tires that gets worse with the optional larger wheels. This one looks to be on smaller snow tires. Would have been nice to hear how the ride was on these wheels.

    • @gregtoth2984
      @gregtoth2984 ปีที่แล้ว

      The winters are 18”, perfect for crappy winter conditions with snows. Stock it came with 19” RFT, which actually rode pretty well, much better than 20” or 21” options hey have. I think the primo summer setup is a set of square 19x9” lighter wheels with higher performance non-RFT tires. I bet it would wake the chassis up and still keep a great ride for an SUV.

    • @sosen22
      @sosen22 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use two sets of 20” wheels with M40i (summer/winter). Winter ones are RFT, while for summer I drive non-RFT. Ride quality is a little bit better on non-RFT but cornering is so much better on RFT 😅 on a good quality highway there is no much difference.

      For my roads, and m40i ownership (and having compared to 30i loners), the Comfort mode is totally fine on 20”. For me it’s sometimes too soft. 30i on stock suspension is a bit more compliant.
      The 30i is really nice, if I went back in time I’d gotten that instead since for city use it might even be more fun…if you live in areas where you can do high speeds and actually use the higher power, then 40i. The 40i sounds better and feels heavier.

    I've been test driving these, and like these guys there is just something about this version that doesn't do it for me. The car is good, but I'm only willing to finance a new BMW if it is great, and I don't think these are great. I agree the screen and system is part of the problem. I know what you mean about the sterile feeling with modern petrol BMWs- they almost feel fully electric (in a bad way). I test drove a 220i coupe a few months ago and was left feeling very indifferent to it. The acceleration and braking felt too 'digital', it was either on or off, and it gathered speed a bit too clinically and efficiently, with little in the way of involvement or fun. Along with the fact that there is no manual, BMW as the 'ultimate driving machine' is utterly no longer true these days

    Nice video. It's not clear to me why steering wheel "feel" is important anymore. I realize some car brands have retained some feel despite transitioning to electric steering racks (necessary for driver assistance technology), but I'm not persuaded it's important. The car steers precisely; some cars have suspensions that automatically change when the road surfaces changes. But what's important is that you are in control of the automobile, are pointing it where it needs to go and it does exactly that - and that's it. Getting rid of the hydraulic steering rack reduces weight and improves fuel efficiency. Given the urgent need to reduce emissions and fight human-caused climate change, that's what's important. "Sterile feel" is a triviality. Get over it.

    Cool review guys, but sometimes controversy is good bmw has been doing it for yearssssss and ppl like controversy and the sells proves that, in other words majority rules.. I had a 2009 infiniti Fx50 the styling was very different outside the box , but the sales wasn’t there, GV70. I love that suv .. styling cues are nice. but will it look good over time? Hmm 🤔. BMW imo has always had that sporty look to them. That’s what they’re know for. If you want elegance , I’ll lean towards Mercedes , because that’s their design cues. Gv70 tends to try to mix those two together, but is it cohesive? 🤔 idk their designs can be a bit overwhelming to me especially with the exterior lighting designs. Those sharp two tiered headlights and taillights can be a big too much for my likings. I own a 23 X3M. I like the design. It’s simple but yet a bit classy too me. I have in all black with black wheels, black shadowline pkg.

    The tester had Vernasca Leather - not sensatec. The seat pattern and door stitching are the giveaway. - Might annotate the comment that "sensatec" wasn't ready for anything in the vid. If the hosts spilled anything in the tester shown in the vid, they didn't spill it on sensatec.
    Shoppers take note - what the guys may not have emphasized is the performance and handling of this vehicle... which is the one thing that clearly separates X3m40i from its class competition. The other SUVs mentioned in the video can't compete with the go-go of the m40i. If you are buying an X3m40i, it's because you like curvy roads and revs - but need an SUV. The X3m40i is the best performance value in its class with B58 reliability to boot. GV70 just can't (love the interior!), and the Macan that matches performance cost between 20 and 25 thousand dollars more (if you can avoid ADM from porsche).
    If money is not an issue, then certainly buy the Macan GTS. It's the only Macan that is faster in a straight line (with added Sport Chrono, it starts at $89k US). MX will be more, but it's a more comfy cabin... by a large margin (though the back seat has less legroom and headroom), and the Macan will handle much better.

As we already have an SUV in the family, I wasn’t concerned with absolute space so when Tesla dropped the price of the model Y by 20%, I test drove the Y. The Y has better steering than modern BMWs outside of full M cars IMO. The BMW does everything so well, and you can’t beat the noise. However, as you alluded to, it’s sterile. This has to be an April Fools video. They’re wrong.

    Hot hatches are not dead. A $70k "compact" crossover is not a hot hatch. Good test drive otherwise.

      We know they aren't (thankfully) and we just did a big comparison of the best new ones on our original channel: TH-cam.com/EverydayDriver
      But we believe the average driver who used to buy a hot hatch is now buying a 5 seat CUV, as they are available in every price point and buyers (especially in America) can't get enough of CUVs, but ignore most hatches. Thanks for watching!

    Gosh, why does this leather look so bad, even Mazda has better leather on its seats! BMW should really reconsider this.

      BMW is absolutely dropping the ball with Vernasca. Until sales drop off, I doubt it will change. As they introduce models into emerging markets, the accountants and execs will show rising sales figures (and continued upward trending profits) to everyone... and so the slide of BMW interior quality (and exterior design?) may continue for some time unchecked.

      Whoever has had this car has been beating it. You can see indentations in the seats like they were carrying heavy stuff back there. I’ve had an X3M40i with that same leather color for 3 years and mine looks way better than that.
      That said, the Vernasca is not a soft or supple leather at all. They save that for the Merino leather that you can only get on the X5. Thing is, a lot of people don’t want a bigger vehicle but BMW refuses to make those nicer options available for the X3 and 3 series in America. In Europe they get those options. Pisses me off.

      Agree. Had the non-luxurious Vernasca leather in our former '19 230i xDrive...neither supple nor did it even smell like leather. Choosing the Sensatec for our '23 x3 M40i was certainly the right choice for us. @@oneaburns

    Even though the GV70 has the same hp number it’s way slower then the m40i ,drag race them and you’ll see. So with all du respect, no I’d stick with the BMW thank you. Plus their driving on shitty winter tires.completely disagree with their review on this amazing car , these guys make no sense whatsoever

      Is straight line speed the primary reason to pick one car over another? Our guys actually liked this X3, and didn’t discount it for winter tires, as clearly mentioned. We’re glad you like the BMW and hope you get a chance to drive the Genesis G70. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
