    The plug and play aspects of the Amiga is just mindblowing. As you said trying to plug in a new cpu in a pc of the same era it would be a lot of tinkering needed with different stuff both hardware and sofware wise just to get it to boot, but on the Amiga just boom! Off she goes! Amazing they did that this early on. I got myself a Terrible Fire TF534 card with a 030 @33MHz plus MMU and a FPU for my good ol' A500 and she just flies now. And again it was just plugging it in and it worked. No tinkering required. I'm so spoiled now to have a CF drive with all my games and software installed on it and no longer have to diskswap every few minutes, though I do miss that lovely noise the drive makes. It's just a beloved childhood memory of mine sitting down playing games like Chuck Rock when I was just 4 or 5 years old and hear that drive clicking and buzzing away. Hope you can get your hands on a good RC060 for your gal.

      Autoconfig was so far ahead of its time it was amazing. I started selling PC's in 1993 and was flabbergasted at how annoying the constant juggling of DMA channels, IRQ's and memory locations. Gosh... Lets spend an hour tweaking autoexec.bat to try and get our expanded memory to maybe be recognized! What fun!
      On the Amiga I just plugged hardware in, and it happily just set itself up.

    After I reluctantly sold my 500Plus with Classic520 for practical reasons of space, I was given an Amiga 1200 (I'm very, very happy!!)
    So I decided to expand it. Unfortunately I couldn't buy the TF1260 because I needed other replacements to make the 1200 perfect, but I got a TF1230. even if it is not very powerful it gives me great satisfaction!!
    More forward I would like to opt for the 1260 with Motorla 680LC60!
    PS: Your videos are always beautiful to see!!!!

      Being given an A1200 is just wonderful! Those are such marvelous machines, and so expandable. The TF1230 is great for sure, but the TF1260 is so powerful, especially if you can get a custom ROM with the IDE driver built in. So fast!

    Good review. I think the TF-1260 is a nice card when I look at what it is. I did have an TF-1230, but sold it and I am running a Tsunami-1230 instead. But I have thought about a TF-1260 with the good CPU. But as you mention. Too expensive for what it is. Unless you absolutely just need one and can not live without. Most of the times, an 030 is good enough and will give you plenty of joy.

      Yes, a nice 68030 card with a good amount of RAM is nice. It makes an Amiga run like it really should! I like the 68040 & 68060 for graphics work, but most things work just great with a 68030.

    I have the TF-1260 with the LC Chip. But try as I might, I don't believe I have the libraries configured correctly. It takes a minute and a half to boot up to desktop icons. I'll have to plan out a free moment and bring it over to Doug to check the settings. For right now, the 1233N-40 runs nicely.

    • @10MARC

      @@ChrisEdwardsRestoration I think that since there is no way to shut it off, it becomes the only FPU available in the system? Like if you in the future add a full RC chip, the two FPU's would conflict? Of course, at that time I would just pop out the onboard one!

    I strangely had the same issue. I ordered a modern redo of the processor board on my a4000 (originally the a3640 board) with an LC060 with no FPU. The a3660 card worked for games and some apps but most apps that could detect the 060 expected the FPU and crashed or guru’ed the machine. Adpro, Final Calc and many more.
    I ended up using my 040 processor card more than the LC 060 processor card since the 040 has an FPU built in.
    In the end I bought a full rev 6 version of the 060 with FPU. Very fast and works to 75Mhz. Found one on eBay for $150. Doug’s right though: they now go for about $350 and are completely worth it.

    Do you know why those CPU cost so much? Beside the chip shortage that forced any electronic item to cost more, and the fact that there were not that many of those 060 (even the mac used the LC variant for most part), it is because there are people that own more than one Amiga and are willing to spend 350+ for those.
    How do we solve the problem? Stop buying those CPU, so whoever buy them in large quantity to make a profit on those, end up loosing money and the price go down. It is simple economics 101... As long as there are people willing to pay for something unnecessary (if you already have one, buying a second 060 main variant is a waste; unless you use both the 4000 and the 1200 for work, which I find hard to believe), prices will stay that way and anyone that does not even have one 060 is forced to pay extortion prices.
    As usual, the community in the Amiga world is what usually mess up things, and give the chance to scalpers and people that does not even care about the Amiga at all, to make profit out of our pockets. I saw Amiga pricing skyrocket in the past 10 years or so, not because stuff became rare, but because people figured out that Amiga collectors are people in their mid 40s usually, that have disposable income, and are literally skinning anyone trying to buy Amiga related hardware and software. It is like sharks smelling blood; and as long as people continue to buy stuff, thinking to do a favor to the community by keeping small companies alive, there will be people taking advantage of real Amiga collectors.

    • @brostenen
      @brostenen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those 060's were expensive even before Covid-19. The answer is just simple in this case.... Too few CPU's in the world. Just like Pentium PRO now. Gold diggers have destroyed so many in the hunt for 0.25 gram gold per CPU, that there now are so few, that the rest are more expensive than what gold value they contain.
      The next step is to take an FPGA and implement a full 060 core and have it all as a CPU socket drop-in. You only need the CPU core it self and nothing else. That might be able to be done way cheaper than a real ceramic one from Motorola. And imagine. A 250 mhz 060 in 1:1 replica. That never runs hot at all.

    • @10MARC
      @10MARC  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get what you are saying, but my 680RC60 that I bought in 2018 was incredibly expensive. I am not sure if there ever was a time when they were "cheap". Honestly not many computers ever used them. Most equipment using 68060's used the LC or EC version, which is why they are fairly common and cheap.

    • @fcf8269
      @fcf8269 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brostenen Indeed I said that it was one of the causes of increased prices. If a simple Raspberry pi is sold at 4x its cost, I am not surprised to see price surging for any other electronic item.
      Good point about the gold diggers that melt CPU for materials... I thought that practice was dead but it seems it is still going on.
      Hopefully there is a way to make replacement CPU that are not FPGA, with modern techniques. I saw different companies using old designs to make comparable IC, although I am not sure Motorola would be happy to share their design without asking for a cut on the sales. It could run basically cold as you say, at 4x multiplier for its frequency

    • @fcf8269
      @fcf8269 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@10MARC Agree; they were expensive but not THAT expensive.
      I remember buying a Blizzard MK4 50 for 180 dollars in 2003 or so; and if you look at auctions from the past few years they go for 600 or so. The old 060 cards used to sell for about 400 and now the asked price is almost doubled; for 20+ year old hardware that can fail at any time.
      Not a fan of FPGA unless there is no other way to source the actual chip; but at one point we have to accept that hardware goes bad once it get old, and if there are no replacement, there are very little venues to keep those machines alive. And this is not only for CPUs; the AA chipset and other relevant IC may go bad too, and I have no idea how to replace those, once that the last batch of working ones will be exhausted. I love my Amiga but I prefer to keep it off and use it once in a while; and for day to day usage a RPI4 is more than enough (after all it goes much faster than FPGA Vampire cards at a 10th of the cost)

      The reason why the 060s are expensive is that they are not produced anymore. some was made to 2016 for military use. but very small batches. most of those are recycled for the $15ish worth of gold.. bvut those who actually reaches chipbrokers.. well they know the value. so...
      and NO.. the MAC never used the 060. not even LC. if that would be the case there would be alot more 060s out there. Apple skipped the 68k cpu aftrer the 040.

    I’m really curious to ask you personally. For somebody who always wanted an Amiga computer, but never could afford one in the day. Would you recommend a new purchaser behind the Vampire 4V+ vs RetroPassion refurbished Amiga 1200 with TF1260? With compatibility being the number one issue

      Hmmm... to be honest I would go with the Amiga 1200. The Vampire V4 is awesome, but using that kind of modern hardware just does not bring me the same joy as using the original. I feel the same about PiMiga and WinUAE. I love them, they run incredibly fast, but I always migrate back to the original hardware

      @@10MARCThanks man I really appreciate it. When it’s the computer that got away it’s something special. A friend had one, an Amiga 1000 when it came vs IBM/Microsoft pc or black and white Mac, I was never so jealous in my entire life.
