    What I like about a lot of the retro TH-camrs is that they DO show their mistakes and things they're not proud of. Not only does it help us newbies learn (and not repeat those mistakes HOPEFULLY), but it reminds us that we're all human and always have the opportunity to do better in the future when we make mistakes. Thanks for showing this, Jan!

    Still waiting for 5 years now for the keycaps from the campaign. Stll disspointed what's happening there (or better what's NOT happening there). Not only because of the pandemic issues, but for the whole process itself. While still bakers are waiting and hoping for delivery, others managed to produce compatible and good loklng keycaps and keyboards. I'm jealous right now. Good work Jan.

    As a programming teacher said to us "if the fix works leave it alone" and "perfection in the enemy of the good". I recapped my A1200 years ago with new caps I have no idea on the brand or the quality of soldering, but it works. If it fails in 20 years, or the post-it note sitting under the CFcard sets it on fire, I got a couple more decades out of it.

    Awesome stuff Jan! It is so cool that we are getting different people making mechanical keyboards for the Amiga. I love the one I have from Kipper2K. I am very grateful for them all putting in their time. Making these keyboards isn't an easy task.

    It's a tribute to the original design that just adding a clear case and a black keyboard makes it look completely new. It wouldn't look out of place on a modern desk. I hear what you are saying about the nostalgia itch but you can always change it back if you want to. Speaking of itches, those bent over caps must have been in the back of your mind for ages 😊.

    I remember when you recapped that A1200. Time flies and you have come a long way. That keyboard looks very nice! All my Amiga's still have the original keyboards although I have had to replace membranes and on the A500 I have had issues with dry solder joints which caused keyboard issues. It's nice to see options available and I appreciate it when you show these available options because it helps us keep our old friends alive.

  • @stevesether
    @stevesether 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The A1200 was such a bittersweet machine for me. I got an A500 in 1990 after prices had fallen to something I could afford. By 1993 when the A1200 finally came out we were all ready for "the next thing". I recall the A1200 being a disappointment in terms of both cost, and capabilities. I was a poor college student at the time. Investing in a new monitor, a new computer, and a new hard drive (my A500 had SCSI) was completely out of the question. PCs had gotten so much cheaper that they had actually become less expensive than an Amiga. Since so few were produced (especially in the US) they're still a bit UN-obtainable.
    It was still cool though! I kind of wish we had this design again where the computer, keyboard, hard drive are all in one unit.

    • @VincentGroenewold
      @VincentGroenewold 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funny, I wasn't following many news sources back then, but do remember being really excited about the 1200. I had no idea about what other systems were doing and was just amazed about the amount of colors the AGA chipset could produce. :) Ignorance is bliss sometimes.

    • @stevesether
      @stevesether 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@VincentGroenewold Yeah, by 1993 AGA was mostly just keeping up with SVGA. It wasn't anything astonishing. Economies of scale and competition had driven down prices of graphics cards to where Commodore wasn't really competitive on price anymore. Commodore had about a 4 year lead on everyone, and they completely blew it.
      Sometimes I wonder what would have happened in Irving Gould hadn't fired Jack Tramiel.

    IBM never used Cherry keys. They had buckling spring techniqe. But Commodore had Cherry keys in the A2000 Braunschweig edition (which was my first Amiga). So for me an Amiga with Cherry black is the real nostalgic feel (I used the A2000 BE keyboard also on my A4000 later).

    I have to admit, I'm in two minds about the keyboard. As much as I love mech keyboards (I have five of them for all my PC boxes), I would like to keep my Amiga parts close to original. I mean, I'm all for upgrade and mods of internal stuff, but those parts that interact with me I would like to keep in the old spirit. I still want to hear that original floppy sound, I still want to feel that original keyboard - all that feeling I fell in love with 30 years ago. Like when you restore a '69 muscle car - I'd definitely use modern brakes, but I'd never use modern Recaro seats, for example.

    Since the keycaps are XDA you can just swap them around and keep at least some of the German layout. You know since XDA is a uniform profile.
    And now try replacing the switches with Zeal Clickiez or Novelkeys Thick Clicks.

  • @draggonhedd

    So Jan, These look like XDA profile caps, so you should be able to physically cut the traces and bodge wire swap the A and Z keys, and then just swap their caps. The caps should all be flat profile so it wont look weird.

    The problem with ceramic caps is when they go bad, they short closed. Electrolytic short open. Not good for the uber expensive Amiga custom ICs.

  • @JamesPotts
    @JamesPotts 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The "capacitor plague" is supposedly due to double corporate espionage, where an engineer incorrectly copied the new electrolyte formula from Rubicon. He brought it to China, where it was then re-stolen and taken to Taiwan. IIRC, Abit was the only manufacturer that admitted that their leaky caps came from Taiwan.
    Rubicon's formula allowed for a more compact electrolytic cap, allowing for wider range SMD use.

    • @stevesether
      @stevesether 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That particular cause of capacitor problems came much later. From capacitors produced circa 1999-2007 or so. I had one of the A-Bit motherboards that failed. IIRC I bought it in maybe 1999, and it died in maybe 2002. (Pretty crummy the have hardware fail after only 3 years).
      I'm still curious as to what caused the capacitor plague of the early 90s, but I don't believe it was the same as the really horrible 3 year lifetime of the caps made in the the early 2000s. IIUC the problem with the early 90s caps was about "early surface mount caps". There's a LOT of Macs from that era that have self destructed from corrosive electrolyte leaking on the PCB.

      The A2000 made in Braunschweig, Germany, was made with original Cherry switches (black switches). The keycaps were double-shot, exept for the Amiga keys (they are pad printed). The function keys are 1u only (not 1.25 u like on the other Amigas). I actually bought Din->Mini Din adapter and used it on my A4000 later. Definitly the best Amiga keyboard ever (and as you can open cherry switches and change the stem, you even can make it clicky and/or tactile if you want without soldering).

    Ceramic capactitors are perfect in the Amiga 1200 for anything except the audio circuit and composite video circuit. In the audio circuit, you would lower the audio quality a little bit, but I bet it isn't that noticable. Just those THT electrolytic capacitors look a bit ugly IMO and would warrant to be redone.

      @@danielmantione yes as ceramic capacitors vary depending on voltage. they will not have the correct capacitance. meaning you are putting in "random values". as youtube do not allow putting in URLs I tell you to google ceramic capacitors and voltagedepenecy and you will see.. simply put: there are a reason a special type of capacitor is used. do not change. as told. a booting machine is no proof of working caps. you could put in diodes in place of the caps and the machine would still boot. is that ok then? no..

      No, there is no PC keyboard fitting. Also the keyrath v2, wich can adapt an a1200 keyboard and the jocksticks to usb is out of stock due to chip crisis at the moment.
      If you have an Anycubic Chiron (FDM printer with 410 by 410 printbed) you might print an A600 case. Thats what I intend to do (have to repair the chiron first...). Black Carbon Fibre PETG and Powder coated spring steel to print on should look nice, but maybe transparent PETG might work also. For the A600 both an open source mechanical keyboard pcb and an open source keyboard controller are available. If you combine this with a Pi, a draw bridge with disk drive and a slot in cd drive, you would get a perfect emulator...

    Man, that keyboard looks great, shame they used terrible nonstandard switches. I see people in the comments talking about replacing the switches, and that would be nice, (especially cause blues suck) but I'm 99% sure those are a certain Kailh switch only available as red linears and these blue clickies, with overall smaller dimensions than actual MX format switches, so the footprint isn't compatible most likely. AFAIK these are the same as on the IQUNIX M80, unfortunate.

    • @kaitlyn__L

      They look like standard footprint cherry compatible to me. It’s not the low profile caps, those have a different stem design. The clear casing just makes it look flatter with the foreshortening when he takes the key off
