The entire album that this song is from is based on the book Demian: The Story of a Youth by Hermann Hesse. That part where RM was talking is from the book. Long story short, the book is about a boy who realizes the difference between two worlds, good and evil. And about his relationship with friend Damien, and his slight obsession with Damien's mother. But he only meets Damien's mother at the end of the story. It's about his battle with good and evil, and him realizing that in the end it didn't matter and that life is all about living according to your instincts and desires. It's a really good book, I recommend you read it.
There is symbolism all throughout this video that ties into this and past MV theories. At the beginning, Jin is staring at the painting Rebellion of the Fallen Angels. Jimin and Suga are in front of Venus, RM is reading to Jungkook from the book Damien and J-Hope and V are looking at a madonna The balcony scene, V jumps into the painting of The Fall of Icarus while Suga and Jimin exchange "sins"...blindfold, ignoring the restrictions of society and/or your morals and the apple for temptation. RM said the MV was about Damien, but also about temptation. V is the fallen angel and Jin cracks at the end because he gave in to desire and temptation, he lost his pure façade. The saying on the wall is from Nietzsche, it says " You cannot give birth to a star without having chaos within."

Yes, Hermann Hesse was writing about the duality of the human experience, going from the innocence of childhood to the temptations of adulthood. I think this MV is one of the deepest video/ song that RM ever wrote. You could spend hours just analyzing the visual symbolism. The subjects of the paintings, standing between the devil and angel statues, the black and white doors, even the meaning of the colors that were splashing. It truly shows the impact of Namjoon's intellect on what he writes.

You were calling Demian "Damien"😉- probably autocorrect, I assume. My favorite part in this MV is Jin's face cracking after kissing the statue of Abraxas as many people think when watching it for the first time that it's a negative thing when it isn't, it's "a bird hatching from an egg". Just as in the book when Sinclair is kissing the portrait, it takes him away from the self-destructive behavior and is a stepping stone for him that helps him grow up.

BTS always has complex song lyrics. This song is about growing up. They all came to the group as teenagers, actually children; the youngest Jungkook was 13 years old. And children are angels with chocolate cheeks and wings. But a happy, carefree childhood ends, and they face the temptations of adulthood, becoming fallen angels. Although they make attempts to warn each other by closing or blindfolding their eyes. When at the end Jean kisses the Fallen Angel, it’s like a consummation of entry into adulthood. The video uses: Pieter Bruegel's painting "Fallen Angels", Bosch's painting "The Fall of Icarus" (also about growing up - he didn't listen to his dad) and Michelangelo Buanarrotti's sculpture "Pieta" (the mourning of Christ by his mother Mary).

From what I have read, Jin kissing the statue means that he chose the evil path. V loses his wings after falling, just like Icarus. This song has such a deep meaning. This is why I love BTS music. I don't know how to explain it, but it just hits differently, if that makes sense? There is just so much more to BTS than what people may think.

The book that it is based on is surrounding the idea that in order to become mature ... one must also learn and embrace the temptations of the dark. At the end, Jin... the oldest... embraced and accepted the dark to go complete his road to maturity.

No one gets the meaning at first. It's based on Herman Hesse's book "Demian". Google for the explanation. Or look for an explanation on TH-cam. This won't be the first song you hear that requires an explanation. So. You already knew this. BTS is not a KPop boy band that sings pop songs. They are true musicians and artisans set apart from everyone else! They are Renaissance Men! So. Go do your research. They named a lot of temptations in the song. Did you get that???

Jimin was selected to open this song because of his ability to exude sexiness. They initially considered Jin but Jin said he couldn’t give them what they wanted.
You get what you want and you succumb to the trappings of fame. Jimin and the Jimin and Yoongi scene represent sexual indulgences, kink. RM the alcohol and drug indulgence. V is the fallen Angel Lucifer Morningstar. Jin chose the dark side. He kissed the demon.

the mv is tied to the theme of the temptation ("the temptation" is written behind the boys at 1:27), but that's not all the meaning, it's not just the metaphorical story about how we always want bad things. the MV and the whole concept of Wings album and its short films, in another words the whole era is based on symbolism connected to the Herman Hesse's book Demian, where the main character (MC) explores his psyche while growing up (spoken lines in this MV and short films are quotes from the book). Theme goes along with coexistence of 'dark' and 'light' in our lives. MC was taught to see only the good side of the world, which is wrong, because the world isn't perfect and has bad side too. One can't live fully embracing just the good. You should accept both. The quote from the book that i really like is MC's thoughts: 'Why are only pleasant things attributed to the God if he created the whole universe? Are not both the light and dark sacred?'. The visuals of mv follow this theme: boys grew up and now facing new temptations to overcome or succumb to it thus they are acting defiantly, as if trying to seduce the viewer.
There's a lot of pieces in the MV that are full of symbolism: every picture, statue, sound, object
    • green color plays the role of a bad things like a devil's blood or a poisonous absinthe reputed to be a hallucinogen and banned in some countries. Namjoon is connected to the absinthe, his lines are "But your wings are wings of the devil. In front of your Sweet is bitter bitter" (2:19). behind the sweetness of the drink (absinthe is often drunk with sugar) lies its real essence of bitterness. it symbolises succumbing to temptation and denying the real world in favor of an illusion. we also see green smoke around Yoongi (3:01) and in the room where both Namjoon and Jungkook are (6:07)
    • an apple which means sin both in the religion and the book. Jimin is connected to an apple specifically, but they also all have an apple on their plate in the last supper scene (5:40). in the same scene we see the vials they all raise up to drink. the lyrics say "the grail was poisoned but I drank it anyway", which in imagery brings us back to absinthe, and it's once again the collision of good and bad, the holy grail and the blood of devil. moreover in the choreography they incorporated the move alike to drinking from a glass (6:03)
    • Black and white doors on the sides of the “The Fall of the Rebel Angels” picture (1:21) that can be representing the inner fight of good and evil. “The Fall of the Rebel Angels” itself depicts the fall into hell of angels who rebelled against God, they turn into ugly monsters and good angels give them battle. In fact, this is the main idea of the struggle between good and evil, the choice of your side in this battle. there were also sculptures of an angel and a demon on the sides of background in the set for the choreo (2:01)
    • behind Jungkook's back is a painting of Icarus (6:47). I think everyone is familiar with Greek mythology and is aware that Icarus was presented with wings, but he could not resist the temptation and flew too close to the sun, causing the wax in his wings to melt so he fell. The story echoes the ideas of the song and the title of the album itself: "WINGS". Behind Tae when he jumps from the balcony is "The Fall of Icarus" too (6:23)
    • a blindfold that keeps one from seeing the worlds as it is - then when blindfold is gone you see green tears (9:41)
    • as the veil, that used to cover Tae aka the fallen angel (3:58), lifts up (8:54), revealing everything that people usually deny to acknowledge, Jin kisses the statue of a black winged angel (9:19) as an acceptance of a darker side and resolution of the inner chaos. after the dark is released we see green tears again (9:37)
    • above the mirror there's a Nietzsche quote 9:45 (who also has a lot to do with the book's ideology): 'You must have a chaos inside you to give birth to a dancing star'. It's a reference to Nietzsche's ideas about a superman - a creature who, in his power many times surpasses an ordinary person, denies fear and regret, and uncompromisingly follows the chosen path, being the creator of his own destiny. The superman is described in his book "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" and the ideas from there closely connect with "Demian"
MC in the book has a few mentors, with help of who he learns life - and you can see that in the beginning of the MV every younger member is paired up with older one. Younger members have symbols of youth and innocence with them: a slingshot, a lollipop, a bicycle Jin is an observer just like the MC in the book. He has yet another symbol of innocence, a ballon (8:03), which he lets go. He is also the one whose face is covered with hands, which is similar to the way Yoongi covers Jimin's eyes to not let him see the dark world. however, Jin's face is being slowly uncovered as the mv progresses (7:53). he is in transition to adulthood
You also can notice that the rest of the boys are divided into 'good' and 'bad':
    • Namjoon drinking green absinthe (3:34) and subverting yet innocent Jungkook into it (4:03 we see the green wax drop probably from Namjoon lighting up the drink, as it's the only fire in the mv. Jungkook licks off his finger 4:12, this narrative also developed more in the japanese mv)
    • Jimin having an issue with temptation (holding apple 6:18) and Yoongi trying to save him from it (closing his eyes with a hand 1:30 or a blindfold 6:54)
    • Tae being the fallen angel himself with his cut off wings (9:25) represents that dark, rejected side and Hoseok represents hope and shooting a colourful arrow to him (5:48)). I think Hoseok's theme is more prominent in the Japanese version of the mv (it's COMPLETELY different, but be careful, Japanese releases can get blocked). J-hope also has the statue of Pieta (3:41), that has the meanings of piety, compassion, that breaks apart in the end after the characters meet with the dark side (9:50), just like Jin's face breaks (9:59) after accepting the flawed world in its whole.
also, Yoongi playing organ is a direct reference to the one of MC's mentors (8:25)
I would say that especially from Jimin-Yoongi pairing in this mv you can tell that there's no answer what is right: good or evil. The apple is the sin, but the sin is the part of the world. Neglecting it and being blindfolded prevents you not only from "bad" things but from living a life and being yourself: the blindfold holds Jimin to a closed door and doesn't let him go (8:00)
the Nietzsche quote also give a hint that hiding from bad may actually be worse then the bad itself, because without accepting all sides of self one can't reach their full potential. and BTS has a whole another era talking about exploring one's self So the story is about exploring the world in its good and bad in order to explore your own self and become something greater

Hello sir, welcome to ARMY. My daughter has been into k pop since 2009. And she got me into k pop around 2016 with this exact video and I was hooked and gone.
It is also true about what they say about how BTS, their music, and the ARMY help ppl thru their struggles. I am one of them. It was this time last year when I was diagnosed with cervical cancer. During my chemo and radiation I would listen to their music, watch their shows and interviews. And though they have no idea, BTS gave me more strength than I knew I had
And ARMY gave do much encouragement that I know that even after a year of treatments, until the docs give me the all clear, and say I'm cancer free, I will continue to fight.
That is what BTS and ARMY have created a community of love, understanding, and encouragement. ARMY didn't let me give up. And I am not going to give up on ARMY. And one of the last things I would like to say is Thank You ARMY!!!! Thank you for being the drive in my ear when I needed it the most.
I PURPLE YOU!!!! My life is better because of BTS and ARMY! BORAHAE!!!💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

"Blood Sweet & Tears" is a track from BTS's concept album "Wings." Which is based on Hermann Hesse's book "Demian". The album, through its songs, MV's and short films, mentions phrases from the book and Sinclair and Demian's relationship. In turn, the album is part of the B.U. (Bangtan Universe) which is a fictional universe that covers their entire discography, divided into "Eras" and that explores the experiences, growth, difficulties, adversities and friendship of 7 young people who have to face the harsh changes from adolescence to adulthood and consequences of his decisions, the loss of innocence and it is done, but it cannot be changed; the butterfly effect, as in the song "Butterfly" on the album "The Most Beautiful Moment in Life".
The entire BTS discography is conceptual and takes books, poems, stories as references; as in "The Truth Untold" (from the album "Love Yourself") based on the Italian story "La Flor de Esmeraldo" that talks about the lack of value when not having self-love. The same flower that you saw at the end of the "Blood Sweet & Tears" MV and is the same flower that is seen in a series of videos, represents nobility and purity.
In Carl Jung's psychological studies, such as the "Map of the Soul" series of albums that show the Archetypes of the soul in the RapLine songs "Persona" (RM), "Shadow" (Suga) and "Ego" (j -hope).
BTS is what is known as the "Rabbit Hole" effect... once you get in, it's impossible to get out.
I have been listening to K-POP for many years, more than 17, and I can say that it is the most complete and exquisite band in art, talent and conceptuality. It has the only RapLine whose members come from the Underground; and all 7 (especially RapLine) write, compose and produce their own music.

If you find it overwhelming, you could try watching the video twice; once for visual/choreo/music, and again, for lyrics. Some reactors find it helpful, some do not. There are also explanation videos for many of their mvs if you feel like you need more info. 💜

Yesterday was an extremely difficult day for me because it marked the 7th month since my father died and in 6 days it would have been his birthday, so April is very difficult for me and this week especially, But today I looked at your reaction to Blood sweat and tears and I burst out laughing with the "I need my bible" and "Jimin is like Cyclops, you have to cover his eyes". Thank you sincerely, because apart from BTS who manages to slightly change my mind about my grief and sorrow, your reactions make me laugh instantly. Your comments are really funny. Keep going . This album was based on the book Demian: A Story of Youth. Wings though was also a major story update on the BTS Universe. The video trailers were all based on their fictional universe the members each had constructed for themselves. It started with the song "I Need You" even though if you listen to the first couple of albums you'll see that it begins at the beginning with them meeting in school during detention. This BTS Universe was constructed by using the videos along with trailers concert videos, books, webtoons, and phone app games. There are a few channels that carry the story in full but watching Bangtan's videos you can get a fairly good overview and this album (Wings) especially explains their story.
It has never been easy to understand these videos from BTS but definitely fun. When we first saw them in 2013 they were cute school boys talking about school then all of a sudden they were talking about depression and dire feelings of failure and trauma that children often have to deal with caused by mostly by adults or bullying from other children. So we would watch these videos over and over and over, one week we would think that Taehyung had died the next it was Jungkook, the next it was Jin, the next week it would be that Jin wasn't real or that all the other members were manifestations of Jin's personality. Each of these thoughts had a valid viewpoint behind it but they all turned out to be wrong. Funny thing is that every time you rewatch the video you see something new something different, it is why it is fun to watch BTS videos. So if you want to learn of the BTS Universe that is very interesting and if you don't enjoy the videos anyway as the are a joy to watch either way.

So you don’t miss anything (only if you have time) you can always do a full reaction video which is lyric video first, MV second, performance (Choreography) video an explanation video (if available), live performance. It may seem like a lot to watch but ARMYs will definitely watch. We love the longer more in-depth videos if it helps the reactor (yourself) understand the song and visuals. Everything in every MV is intentional and has meaning. Just like the lyrics have multiple meanings. They also have behind the scenes video. The more you know about a song the better it will be for their return in 2025 the 10th Anniversary of their HYYH era. 😉

Bangtan music is complex and beautiful and you can’t grasp it all in one watch or listen. You have to watch it multiple times the MV, live performance, dance practice, making of the MV, any live of members explaining the song/ album, read translations and interpret it, then go to K-ARMYs for any cultural references…
You’ve no idea how much work it is! But it is the best part about them that I love😊

You are not far off in the meaning of the song. You need your Bible for this one for sure. I know someone talked about the mv being related to the book Demian which follows a person (Sinclair) growing up and discovering evil in the world (I can't explain it well at all- it's a lot). In the book they also talk about Abraxas (who I think is the winged statue) who is a god for both good and evil who Sinclair learns about. In the mv, the older members are introducing or shielding the younger ones from the temptations. They are eating apples (like Eve in the Garden of Eden being tempted), letting go of the balloon (loss of innocence), the paintings showing fallen angels, Icarus whose wings melted when he flew too close to the sun after not listening to his father. In the end Jin kisses the statue to kind of embrace the good and evil and things start to break, green liquid everywhere, his face cracks (someone mentioned the chick who must first destroy his own world (the egg) to be born), the flowers are different in the mirror! It goes crazy! The words and the organ music are from the book as well.
It's also related to the BU which is a different story. Thanks for your reaction.

I have to read the lyrics, I have to see the video (choreography always awesome and there’s sometimes so much symbolism in them), then by the 3rd time-enjoy it as a whole. Their videos are next level and their lyrics are meaningful-just masterpieces so it takes concentration 😅

@7:26 - HEARD!! 🤣🤣....7 yrs ago was exactly like you. Then I learnt a good method which many OG and new BTS reactioners use. I skip this 1st part but others start by 1) simply listening to the song. No vid. Just the lyrics version with all 7 photos above. Depending on who's singing...their photo lights up, gives you the chance to read the lyrics without distraction 2) This is where I do it. Watch the video (no captions) soak in their dance moves and ambiance/effects etc 3) Watch a 2nd time with captions 4) Check their dance practice as we miss many things during the actual Music Vid 5) Check them perform it live. While I love our boys. I don't do all 5 steps with every song - shit - would never end ...lol. I do it for those songs that I love/love and considered 'classic BTS songs'. With this one? It is complicated AF lol.....is why you can find a 'break down' of what the lyrics mean and the narrative they're trying to show us. and it goes DEEP. If interested: Don't know exact title but maybe type in Blood Sweat & Tears BTS breakdown/explanation etc. Is fascinating. Thanks for your reactions 💜💜

You now have discovered why ARMY has seen their MV's many times, lol. You have to watch them multiple times in order to see everything. And then you will still miss things. For the choreo they have either a dance practice or a live where you can see they choreo the best. Definitely worth watching. Also, most of their videos have a much deeper meaning than a love story or heartbreak or relationship stuff. DKDKTV does some great explanation videos. There are also tons of fan made explanation videos as well. You don't need to react to those but very much recommend watching them.

You're a grown man - you know what this means. In an interview, Jimin said, "we showed them who we are in Blood, Sweat and Tears," - I don't know how we could have been more clear. RM often draws inspiration from literature,, as does the movies, but that's not what they're singing about.

Honestly it helps a lot to just watch it twice. You’re never going to fully understand any of it unless you’re seeing the whole story presented to you in the video and then the story of the lyrics. It’s almost impossible to do both at once or else you’re going to miss key details lol so I recommend when you do just song reactions, to watch it through once, and then again to study the lyrics! 💜 Happy BTSing, Borahae!

The song is wonderful (it has a deep meaning) and the images of the guys in it are simply masterpieces!
The choreography for this song is one of their best. The clip turned out very beautiful.
To see all the details of the video and choreography, try to first read the lyrics to the song, understand its meaning, and then watch how they embody and broadcast this text in pictures and stories in the video. And listen already - without translating the text. It seems to me that their songs are perceived better this way and then you won’t miss any details. Because BTS is strong in that every detail, even small ones, plays a huge role in their videos. And then, if you miss something, then a completely different perception takes place, and sometimes the meaning is lost. It's simple recommendation. Because everything is interconnected for the guys - text, choreography, costumes, performances in the video, every picture, every frame.. Everything is of great importance. A semantic thread can stretch through several songs and, accordingly, clips.💜
