I love IPA’s scrappy approach. Everything is so weak but synergistic and devious at the same time. Refreshing after playing sets with 3/3s for 3 that draw cards, kill creatures etb, and like wax your car on top of it.
The beauty of pre-power creep. The games were a chess match and your drafting strategy was not just building your best goldfish deck. Now you have 2 drops that are as strong, if not more powerful, as 4 & 5 drops from these older sets. Every creature feels close to a must. The groan test between old formats and current formats is the big difference. Current magic is still fun but I feel like the best drafters lost 5-10% off their win rate just to the amount of games you can lose simply because OP won the die roll and curved 2, 3, 4 or you miss a single land drop in turns 2-4. Deck building, still important, is less important than just drawing a 2 drop into 3 drop.

Another neat trick with the Phyrexian Infiltrator: If you have 8 mana but no creature you want to give them, you can swap the Infiltrator back and forth to remove one of their creatures from combat.
43:00 you gave opp an island so they could have still activated infiltrator but thankfully horrible templating and weird interactions mean they didn't know lmao.

Love how in game one he didn't block the Shivan Wurm with his Voldalian Zombie to take two less damage
Shivan Wurm has trample, so he would take 7 regardless of blocking or not because protection makes it so the Zombie doesn't take any damage, so it would not absorb the 2.
@@jvsvogler It actually does absorb the 2 points. Protection stops damage from being dealt, but damage still must be assigned to the blocker as part of trampling over something.

Oh man, such hard nostalgia vibes on this one for me. Invasion block was the first new block I experienced as a new player. I also really like that you get 1 pack of each edition from the block in this format. Beautiful trip down memory lane!
Glad to see IPA is back on MTGO. A few months ago, I finished my own IPA cube and this will surely provide me lots of pick-order data for making any additional cuts/keeps. The data from 2001 is hard to find and often very incomplete.
Can you provide a list of your own IPA cube? I have lots of cards from that period and it would be awesome to craft me one as well :)
When was this recorded? Are the IPA drafts available now on mtgo or is this an old video? I don't see them in the client.

What I can tell you is that if you go to any CubeCobra cube and replace the last portion of the link with 1l4l0 that it'll show you my cube. Notably, I improved the manabase with custom basic-typed taplands.
Why are you looking for 2001? Flash back IPA drafts have hit mtgo many many times.
When you stole the Glade Gnarr with the Phyrexian Infiltrator interaction, their untapped forest was an island from the Reef Shaman activation. They could have thrown in that monkey wrench you were talking about.

Ah the memories of drafting this set. I got 3 boxes of each for the jss tournies I won and we drafted almost all of them! 5 color fun was something. You can really see how bad creatures where back then compared to now, but at the time this was an awesome approach to multi color synergy decks. For standard I remember fires of yavamaya and how crazy some of these multi kicker cards really made it even more ridiculous.

Seeing the Draco P2P1 made me giggle, I pulled off a Dralnus' pet pitching draco twice in the last IPA I did. Funny enough, I told my newer to mtg opponent to please don't have an answer and he took a while and cast armadillo cloak on his own guy instead of my pet. He had THE answer!
Invasion Prerelease was my first limited event. It's nice seeing IPA looking back from so many years later. Deck is good, deck is obnoxious, but hey, Rishadan Port era magic thought messing with one land repeatedly was fine...
This was an extremely fun watch! Getting to see cards that never get played by a great player that knows how to use them to the best of their ability.
I love these retro drafts so much! I still remember most of these cards as they were featured heavily in our kitchen tables, but I never got to play any of these old sets in limited. Not sure if any of my friends even knew what drafting was back then. Hoping to see more!

This is so great. I don't remember which set was going on when I started playing magic, but Invasion was the first I ever bought; it was a blue-black control, and the rare was Phyrexian Infiltrator. I loved it because it was rare. I was 7 years old and didn't understand what "exchange" meant.
I love those sets, learned to play MTG during Invasion block.
Bringing the team into the mix is a definite boon. We get a little bit more of that classic LSV analysis.

Man, I love this format. I wasn't even playing limited at the time so no nostalgia goggles, but all those sweet sweet value cards? Drool. Jilt is a personal favourite.

IMO Spiritmonger and Pernicious deed are better than Flametounge. But they are all insane in this format. Along with FoF

The cycle of my youth. Was around 15/16 when this block was released. I love playing PreModern cause I can use a lot of these old garbage cards, lol
This was the first block I drafted a lot and was actually good at.
Is the block with the Zombie at 24:03 not free? It saves 2 life. Is there a reason I'm missing for not doing that?

Played a bunch of IPA, but in hindsight it is kind of awkward to have so many domain-matters cards in a format with such horrendous lands. Dom United giving you etb-tapped dual lands really feels like the fixed IPA
I love the new channel, but could you pick other graphics for the video that don’t spoil the outcome of the draft? A lot of the appeal of watching a draft is diminished if you already know the direction it will go. Thanks!

24:00 you could've blocked with voldalian zombie and because of how the trample-protection interaction works no excess damage can be dealt to you.
The player still takes the trample damage as though the creature with protection received lethal damage. Same is true for indestructible, but you are correct that he could've saved 2 life by blocking here.
That last opponent was the reason why old formats were better, he had ALL the bombs but played like kinda bad and he lost! Nowadays he would just crush everyone with the same level of bombs.
At 24 minutes you probably shoulda blocked Shivan Wurm with your progreen guy.

power creep is insane. Totally different game I bet he liked the 1998-2010 era far more than the 2010-2023 era (or some other cutoff year around that time) But that is also because the pro scene was much cooler back then. Killing of the pro tour, going digital did not make the game better for pro tour veterans.
