I just thought i'd look back at a few early videos of people i subscribe to and couldn't resist this one. A great video on how to make security pins very easily. 2013 !! Only 6 years but it seems like a life time!! Great and very instructive video, many thanks.

In case it helps anyone with their searching: the tool that Bill refers to as 'forceps' in this video is generally called a 'hemostat'. The tool actually called 'forceps' is more like the 'tweezers' that Bill usually uses when gutting.

Bill, you sir are the Kama Sutra of locksport. Hats off, mate.
Also for anybody interested, Dremel has a workstation that costs about $30 and allows for plunging to use like a drill press as well as a tilt feature and locks in place horizontally at 90 degrees as you see in the video. It's way cheaper than buying a vice if you don't have one. Either way works great, thanks, Bill. I never thought about chucking the pins like that.

Bill, instead of working with existing pins, being a machinist and all, you should just buy brass rod stock of the correct diameter for that lock, chuck a several inch long piece of it into your rotary tool or mini lathe and machine it, then trim the pin length you need off after you finish machining. If you want leave it slightly long and use an India stone or a belt sander to hone it flat after cutoff. All sorts of options.

awsome vid, love these tutorials, im just getting in to lockpicking and havent came across any security pins yet, but now i can make my own, thx bill
I sharpened the sides and added cutouts for uniformed depth to some extra picks and tensions wrenches and found they can make very sharp and close together ridges in between wider cuts with files. Makes for one crunchy lock. FYI. Picks get HOT fast.
I don't understand what you are saying, but it sounds helpful if you explain what you said.
I had extra picks and tried using them like files and it worked out nicely. My files are cheap so they don't last long. The picks would wear down and make a grove and ended up making perfect "stay in place" cuts. Few marks on the pick and a uniformed depth was easy to get. If you don't have any files or good ones and have picks you know you wont use it's just a cheap way to have some fun. Steel pins make everything hot. Eye and hand protection are must. Got too close to the chuck and like magic the pick tool vanished from site.

You can use a pedal from a sewing machine to slow the speed down if you need to. An older friend used to call it a “slower downer”. By the way he was the one that got me into Dremel tools.
Always great video's no-matter how old !! and if you want them shiny, use some super fine sand-paper or a chunk of cardboard.

Check out ebay for used American locks, they can go real cheap sometimes
On a side note: Thank you for mounting that vise on something besides that wobbly table. Short trip but it was driving me crazy. :-)
How did you edit out yourself saying "muahahaha" while cutting these?
It might be helpful to those folks who aren't mechanically trained to explain that using a V-block and a secured vise - clamp-on mounted to the edge of a table or bench works - is what allows one to use the Dremel tool as a special purpose lathe as you have here...

My cordless Dewalt drill has a switch between high and low speed and works perfectly for cutting security pins.

I used this technique to build the pins in the Evil lock I sent you. No shop is complete without 3 or 4 pairs of vice grips. This file set is amazing for the price. I've made over 30 keys with these files and they're still going strong.

Hi Bill,
Just wanted to let you know that the 'file pen' can also be useful as a kit. I'm making some ends for it these days, it doesn't work all that bad, actually. and since you can store a lot of different types of pick in the handle, it's a nice little thing to carry around. ;-)
how about using a hack saw blade as a "file". i would assume you could get some pretty close cuts with that?

A very fine hacksaw blade for the tiny hand held saws will give you nice serrations. =)

have you tried using a hacksaw i think you could get one fine enough to serrated pins. Also the color contrast on the last pin showed up great!

That’s a completely different Chuck on your Dremel then the few I’ve owned.
If you work with the file from the bottom side of the pin instead of the top you can see the cut better. Just be sure you are wearing your PPE (face shield) to protect your self from flying bits
Those are wicked, wicked pins!
Another nice trick to make your lock more pick-proof is to tap threads in the top of the pin holes of the core.
After putting it all back together, how hard was it to pick?
I'm a year late to reply, but id imagine it was maybe 5 or 6x as difficult. because if you look at a stock masterlock in a dirty way it opens

You can buy a thin cutting wire that has been diamond encrusted (I forget the name of it) and I thought that would cut a short pin very well.

I've always been confused about this... Are these only driver pins or can I do this with my key pins as long as I don't shorten it. Sorry for the stupid question. I would appreciate some feedback from someone who knows. I don't want to mess up my lock but my bitting sucks and I rent and don't want anyone bumping or raking in. Suggestions?

Newbies are full of curiosity, like children. Another question: I tried thinking this through, but I'm a bit thick. When you add security pins, you're putting them in in addition to the driver pins, right? Does it mean you can still use the same key, they're just harder to pick? Or am I completely missing the concept? Thanks Bill.
Is it a good idea to modify the pins of your home lock in that way or will they be too weak?

Nice! I like the way this allows you to make different styles of pins. Would this also work on ASSA stainless steel bottom pins? I like to build a higher security lock out of a standard conventional cylinder using the stainless steel pins for drill attack resistance.
bosnianbill Ok that what I thought. Ruin files but just use cheep files. The dremel tool is a high speed lathe. Also nice high speed tool to use is the rotozip. It now has adjustable speed settings just like dremel but on STEROIDS. Thanks for the reply and take care.

Wish I had seen this video before today. I was play around with locks and had a wild idea to make to alien pins. I dont have a Dremel but I do have a Rotozip. I can get modification for my Rotozip to convert it from a small 3 jaw chuck to a collet. I only had one small fine but I was able to make a few spools and serrated. I was thinking of making a mount for my Rotozip and making a tool rest much like a wood lathe. Then modify some needle files to use for plunge cutting like a parting tool on a wood lathe. Maybe can get extremely sharp edges on spools. I have a set of eye loupes up to 10x.. Anyone on here doing some exotic things in making special pins? I am a newbie. Started in Dec 2014. Always looking for any advice and direction. thanks.

They all do exactly the same thing. I have two REALLY old ones, a model 101 and a 377 - both long out of production. If I could afford to upgrade (it is not a priority since mine are working just fine), the three current production models are the 3000, 4000 and 4200. The price difference between them is significant but performance is about the same, so I'd opt for either the 3000 or 4000.
how d'ya cut the pins off the rod?
What are lock pins made of? I ask - is it possible to buy S/S, copper or brass rod the same diameter as that used to make lock pins? Also, what is that size? Here in England, U.K. we're awash with Double Sided Euro Cylinders. The rod for pin making must be the right size for Euro Cylinders. I intend to have - one side of the lock is left untouched - the other side is modified with DIY security pins. An entertaining lock pick, not too difficult though! Regards.

Is that chuck an attachment? or did it come with that Dremel tool? All of the Dremel tools that i see today have that tip where you just place the tool and screw it down to tighten it.
+Matt Pierre You can also buy collets - the little spring collars that are inside the stock Dremel tip - that have an inside diameter to match several common wire sizes - sometimes, that is the superior way to hold a pin.

I was wondering the same thing. I've had a lot of different dremel tools including brand-name and off-brand and so far all of mine have just been a tent Colette.
How much of a nightmare would knurled pins be to pick? They will catch on the walls REALLY well, but the core would have to be steel, otherwise the pins would eat the sleeve up.

This is a great fucking idea Bill, seriously, I'd love to try and design the "Perfect Pin"...maybe try to stagger some ledges, though you wouldn't need the pin to spin then....but I'm sure even my brittle brain could come up with some crazy ass'd shit, for sure....I love it....I've thought about this, obviously, not all the way through...

What is the dimensions for a brass rod for making custom pins?
He was just using the standard pins and filing them.
Seriously after a man buys a hammer, a multi bit screw driver, a saw, a drill, and a wrench the next tool should be a Dremel aka rotary tool. It is the most used tool in my house, well other than my drill and screwdrivers.
Now that I think about it. I think my Dremel is used more than my Drill and screwdrivers.

For those of you that have yet to purchase a Dremel tool...DON'T! Buy a proxxon instead... Made in Germany much better quality ceramic bearings in the motor uses all the same bits and tools and runs much quieter... About the same $$$ within 10-20%.
+bosnianbill Yeah, I just watched a video about ceramic vs steel bearings by a guy who is making his own microturbines. There's just no fair comparison. The steel one were dead in the water and red hot while the ceramic ones were flying and cool as could be. Even at about 20-30 bucks a pop I'm still thinking of replacing the garbage installed on my Dremel at the factory.
Walmart has super cheap dremel accesories, not the best selection tho

Jay H Yes it is. I use on my 4000 dremel. It says which models it works with, i think it works on most if not all. Saves you a ton of time swapping bits too. Good buy
