When I started I got a Master No.3 that I fought with for most of a week (I've since figured out that it's significantly harder than other Master No.3s for some reason, probably the wacky bitting). When I got it opened finally I literally jumped for joy. It wasn't the first lock I'd opened, but I'd been fighting it for so long that it was a real accomplishment.

No, all locks can be defeated. All we can hope for is to delay a criminal with a good quality lock. I'd recommend any lock made by Medeco or Mul-t-lock. Yes, they can be picked but only by a very few people and it takes a lot of time.
Just watched LPL's video about your retirement and came right over. Just wanted to say that this video is what jump started me in the world of lockpicking. I can't say I'm any better now than I was then, but the experience and getting to be taught by you along the way has been incredible. Thank you for your service. I just started a few months ago. I've got the multipick 39 piece set and the covert companion, and the biggest bump key set I could find. I've been able to help three people out at work so far and gain access to two properties where my plumbing shop had permission for me to try to gain access. i just start lockpick as hobby about a week ago i lock pick old home door key 5 all STD pins, then i want to try something difficult after 3days, and i bought American 5200 and he was hell difficult for me but i keep trying 4 days and now i can pick him within 5mins ! if you see my comment and you are Biginners, please DO NOT give up ! keep practice !
Hey Bill. I'm relatively new to lockpicking, and only really started a few weeks ago when my "Ultimate Adversary" practice lock arrived. I watched quite a few of your videos beforehand, as well as a handful of others, and I feel that having learned the theory behind picking has given me a bit of a boost. So a while back, I was rooting around my house for a spare lock to practice on, and found an Abus N 65/40 floating around. I did some research in to the lock, and found out that this lock is meant to have a considerable amount of security pins in it, so I set it aside until my practice set came. After a few days of picking on various pinouts in the practice lock, I felt it was a good idea to try out the Abus lock that I found (I'd given up before due to a really restricted keyway, and I could barely get good tension), and to my surprise, was able to open it given some time. Fast forward a few days and I was able to open it in about 30 seconds. Firstly, I'd like to thank you for your excellent video's, and let you know that you do a great job documenting your endeavours, and are a great service to those of us who lack as much experience. Just through watching your videos that I've increased my knowledge of how locks work, and how best to pick them. Secondly, I'd like to ask, what exactly makes for a challenging pin configuration? I was surprised that despite what I read on forums and other boards about the 65/40 being challenging, that I could open it with relative ease. How long would one expect to have to practice before attempting Abus locks, and do you have any advice on how to pin out my practice lock in order to get better? Thanks for your time, TheBeanhacker.
I am a locksmith out of central Illinois. I absolutely agree about the adrenaline rush after I pick a lock open. I am always looking to improve my skills. Being a woman, I get a lot more pressure than any of the other men that do locksmithing around here. Anyhow, I was looking at your lubes and I noticed that you do not have Houdini. I get mine through US Lock and it is AMAZING! (Even smells like citrus) It doesn't have any Teflon, silicone, oil, grease, etc. Not sure what is in it, but I have used it for over 20 years and it is superb when it comes to lubes. Just letting everyone know. Happy picking ya'll!

I started watching you because I play video games that include a lot of lock picking. So I was interested in the real thing. So I watch quite a few videos before I decided to get a cheap pick set with a see-through lock for practice which finally arrived today. I practiced quite a bit on the see through but I had an old master lock that I had been saving for my first real lock picking. I was having trouble so I came here to see what you say and I was about to give up because you said not to waste time on possibly broken old locks...then it unlocked and I nearly shit myself... Thank you! I have a new hobby and I promise to keep it legal!!

Dear Bill. I just watched the video by The Lockpickinglawyer explaining your recent absence and your retirement. I had been wondering and now I got the answer. He recommended to go find our favourite video and write a comment - but which one should I choose from so many? They are all special. This one have however a special place in my own story of getting into lockpicking. It explains in ways I can understand how to do things and in a way that makes it interesting and funny, it helped me getting my feet wet and build up the skills i have today. Dear Bill, I actually stopped watching this video to read the PDF... holy moly was it good! As a rookie its shocking how much more force it takes to set a binding pin than to move a loose one. Also a combo of your videos plus the PDF = me realizing every lock has a 'right' tension.
You sir are my hero. I have had my cheapo Chinese pick set for 15 minutes and I just single pin picked an old Master lock No5 that I had around the house. The keys have been lost for years.

WOW- Just got a set of beginner picks and was feeling pretty good about myself after raking a Master open in under a minute on my first try. Did that a few times, failed on an Brinks disc then came back to the Master. While watching you in the first few minutes of this video, I picked the Master again one pin at a time. I know for a pro that's not much of an achivement but I've never done this before. What a rush. Thanks!
i must say.. i have always had a intrest in the "challenge" of lock picking... but just recently i have followed that and have gotten into it... i try to watch all of your vids because so far yours are the best... and i have learned from you.... now the thing that makes you really impressive is the fact that you say other are better you dont have a big head and label yourself as some professional.... you sir have my respect and my views for life.... hopefully to top it off you actually read the comments and if you do please keep the awesome vids coming!!!!!

Hello, Bosnianbill: I've purchased the Southord 5-spool-pin clear plastic training lock. At first, it took me 2-hours to pick it. Next day, I can pick it in a few minutes, everytime. I put WD-40 inside it to make it more difficult, and could not pick it at all. I removed the WD-40 by putting the lock inside a cup with rice and placed it on top of my warm ( NOT hot) gas fire. WD-40 all gone! I think, as others in training, I need to take a quality lock apart. EXCELLENT VIDEO! Regards.
Bought my first set of lock picks as an early self-birthday gift. They came in the mail today, and I took a Tru-Bolt padlock out of my junk drawer and started trying to pick it. I couldn't get the hang of tensioning so I decided to look up videos for help. I was sitting here watching this and picked it open successfully for the first time just as Bill was talking about moving up and down the pin stack.
I am brand new to lock picking & this video is really helpful. It helps me figure out which locks to start with and also with managing my expectations of how long it should take me with consistent practice to start attaining some mastery of the basics.

YEAH.. just picked my first lock. It's a four pin fortress, tiny little thing and I did it with a bent piece of metal and paperclip. I uh, yeah thats not an acomplishment, but hey.
My first ironically was a master lock 130 it is 4 pin 1 spool I picked it with a slimmed down nail file and a straightened key clip basicly a 3 inch strip of steel about 1 mm wide.
im a beginner and ive been steaming through all the padlocks i can find just using paper clips. first time took me half an hour now im down to less than a minute. i cant wait to get my first proper set. your videos have helped me massively, so thanks!
I can imagine the reaction if I asked my local locksmith for old locks, they had a fit when I asked after unkeyed cores for padlocks... Apparently mere mortals are not ready for lock technology, only those who have been anointed as Licensed Locksmiths are worthy.
Got a kit yesterday, pick both locks, a 7pin padlock, and another lock in 15secs, i bought them to learn a new hobby, feel ive learned alot in a short space of time, now contemplating seeing how hard or easy to break into my own house, didnt want to try so early incase i was to unfortunately damage the lock, i believe id do it so easy, have to buy more locks now. Thats me hooked

Question: I have been picking for a couple of weeks and have been pretty successful at repeatedly raking locks (up to a 140). I am now going to move onto picking, however, I am a visual learner and need to SEE what I'm doing to process it. What would be your recommendation/opinion for a "trainer" type of clear lock for practice for a beginner. Thanks again
Thanks Bill for your prompt respone. I found a relatively cheap ($35) clear lock online. I think that I need to be able to see what I'm doing and it would be a good investment. Also, thanks for your comments on the 140. I seem to be hit or miss on that and the fact that I didn't know it had "difficulties: built in makes me feel a little better. I definitely feel that I'm lucky with that one. Thanks again, and I hope you will not mind an occasional further inquiry.

I don't care about that "I can't explain how to know or feel the locks", because you did it very good in this one. I am an "old" subscriber and are very happy for your channel. I was inspired buy you videos. I bought a master 140 and picked it with a hair pin in 20mins! I am at an advantage because I use to pick car door locks for work though.
Just got my Master Lock 140! First real lock i've picked and got it with in 40 seconds. Opened it many more times so far, sometimes it does take me an upwards of 6+min , so still a very weird feeling lock. Since I've only got youtube videos for learning and this was the first real lock attempt, the practice lock did not do justice because it did not feel or sound like a lock at all. It's amazing to see what you guys say actually map out to a feeling in your fingers or hand.

Dear Bosnianbill, thanks so much for your videos. For 4 years I've been looking for a lost key to open my house safe. It has a combination lock (which I knew the combination) but requires a key to open the door once the combination is set. 4 years looking for that key!! 4 years!!! After watching many of your videos and several others, I ordered my first pick set but it would take 3 weeks to arrive. You keep talking about making your own tools with wipers and ordinary items readily available. I made my tension wrench by grinding a hexa-key to a flat surface and my pick was made from a filed-down metal wire from a hanging file folder. Armed with these homemade basic tools I attacked my safe keylock and 6 minutes later, my safe was opened! I can't begin to describe how excited I was and the rush it brought. I don't want to pick my safe lock every time I need to open my safe so not sure what the best approach would be. Change the cylinder (assuming I can disassemble it), have a key made by a locksmith or somehow get rid of the whole cylinder?. The safe is used for fire protection, not robbery prevention (

Great video. I got the urge to pick a lock a few weeks ago, was successful in unlocking it and that was all it took for me to be addicted to the challenge. Most of the locks I tackled so far have been pickable, but one padlock on the shed is just frustrating the hell out of me and it isn't a big lock so I thought it should be simple to pick. This morning I decided to get some tips on uncle Google's tube and in this video at 8:15 you had in hand close to the same lock I couldn't pop, I have the Master 140 and before this video did not know about the security pins . After checking out LocksmithArmy as you suggested I had that lock popped in 20 min. Thank You for making a video with some value that held my interest until the end.
I truly wish you the best Bill! You are a great teacher. This video gave me a great start on sport picking. Other lock pick you-tubers just want people to see how quickly they can open locks.
i could not find that either. Too bad after all the hype. I did find a PDF with pics called 'Lock Picking Guide' which was helpful. It didn't make me better immediately like stated but it took my frustration away from not finding the other.

Bill, you have imparted a methodology to me. I have a way of thinking, of approaching the puzzle before me. In the last couple of months I've gotten to the point where I actually think ahead as I work rather than by "feel" alone. And that has allowed me to open half of my "haven't opened it yet" pile. You pass your knowledge well.
I watched this about a month ago after I’d just gotten my picks. I watched it again tonight and it immediately helped me with my SPP! You outline a great progressive approach to advancing your skills. I’ll be incorporating that into my practice!
It's much easier if you have the perk that allows you to start near the sweet spot for the lock. But you need to level up your lock picking skill to 100 first...
thanks for the advice and the link to lockpicking detail overkill, i got my southford picks 3 days ago and untill i read LDO all i managed to pic was a cheap padlock, after reading that i picked my front door in under 2 minutes and then quickly worked through the euro cylinders ive been struggling with. my advice to anyone starting out is understand how to feel the binding order and the rest is easy to work out when youre in there.
Want to thank you for all the material sources and excellent advice you and the Lawyer put out. I have this American Lock 700 and knowing that it is beyond my ability at present I started trying to pick it. I'm taking the advice on this video because you've earned my trust and gave me confidence to keep trying.The series 700 was not budging, I discovered that I needed a top of the key way tension wrench just as you suggest and advice here. I have been buying Sparrows pickers and other goodies. One was their bypass tool. It was not working, after watching you demonstrate the wafer defeat several times I got the gist of the action. So I went for the top of the key way with my thickest .04 bar, wish I had a .05 one last time. But while picking I began to sense a hint of a false set and it occurred to me to try the Sparrow bypass again. While keeping the tension with the bar after a false set I began to try to feel the inside back of the lock and jiggling and gently turning until the thing clacked open. Wish I had the Peterson bypass, seems more precise in the flag shape you showed, but the Sparrows did it. Will be taking the core to the locksmith for a replacement. Thanks for the date code you shared as well, it was manufactured in XGI. So I figured it ought not have the security wafer and sure enough, it didn't. Now I want to locate your other video where you show how to make these old locks better than they were. Thank you.
Thanks for all the great stuff you upload! I decided to learn this skill because a) I'm not really doing a whole lot these days, lol! and b) I used to be able to jimmy a door lock open with a coathanger (honestly only did this when someone was locked out). I did it once when I had no money for a locksmith or new window, and damn, that feeling you mention...that little shot of adrenaline, I got it...and I want it again! It's the same feeling we get when unlocking any puzzle, I think. So anyway, yeah...no time like the present! My first set is a $35 Amazon kit that has 3 practice locks in it, which should arrive in the next couple hours. I'm sure I'll find the tools I like and plan to order higher quality ones if I stick with it. But I digress (often!)... Thanks brother! Your time is appreciated...keep em coming!

You're not kidding. I'm grabbing one shitty (3.99) lock a week to fuck around on. Other than that, I only have my apartment door to practice on... Which I don't want to do... Not until I'm about ready to ask the apartment complex to replace my lock for whatever reason

Being a woman, I get a lot more pressure than any of the other men that do locksmithing around here. Anyhow, I was looking at your lubes and I noticed that you do not have Houdini. I get mine through US Lock and it is AMAZING! (Even smells like citrus) It doesn't have any Teflon, silicone, oil, grease, etc. Not sure what is in it, but I have used it for over 20 years and it is superb when it comes to lubes. I started watching you because I play video games that include a lot of lock picking. So I was interested in the real thing. So I watch quite a few videos before I decided to get a cheap pick set with a see-through lock for practice which finally arrived today. I practiced quite a bit on the see through but I had an old master lock that I had been saving for my first real lock picking. I was having trouble so I came here to see what you say and I was about to give up because you said not to waste time on possibly broken old locks...then it unlocked and I nearly shit myself... Thank you! I have a new hobby and I promise to keep it legal!!

He recommended to go find our favourite video and write a comment - but which one should I choose from so many? They are all special. This one have however a special place in my own story of getting into lockpicking. I actually stopped watching this video to read the PDF... holy moly was it good! As a rookie its shocking how much more force it takes to set a binding pin than to move a loose one. Also a combo of your videos plus the PDF = me realizing every lock has a 'right' tension.

WOW- Just got a set of beginner picks and was feeling pretty good about myself after raking a Master open in under a minute on my first try. Did that a few times, failed on an Brinks disc then came back to the Master. While watching you in the first few minutes of this video, I picked the Master again one pin at a time. I know for a pro that's not much of an achivement but I've never done this before. What a rush. Thanks!

Hello, Bosnianbill: I've purchased the Southord 5-spool-pin clear plastic training lock. At first, it took me 2-hours to pick it. Next day, I can pick it in a few minutes, everytime. I put WD-40 inside it to make it more difficult, and could not pick it at all. I removed the WD-40 by putting the lock inside a cup with rice and placed it on top of my warm ( NOT hot) gas fire. WD-40 all gone! I think, as others in training, I need to take a quality lock apart. EXCELLENT VIDEO! Regards.

Bought my first set of lock picks as an early self-birthday gift. They came in the mail today, and I took a Tru-Bolt padlock out of my junk drawer and started trying to pick it. I couldn't get the hang of tensioning so I decided to look up videos for help. I was sitting here watching this and picked it open successfully for the first time just as Bill was talking about moving up and down the pin stack.
I was watching this while I just successfully picked my first lock! I used a bobby pin and a windshield wiper tension wrench
I am brand new to lock picking & this video is really helpful. It helps me figure out which locks to start with and also with managing my expectations of how long it should take me with consistent practice to start attaining some mastery of the basics.

YEAH.. just picked my first lock. It's a four pin fortress, tiny little thing and I did it with a bent piece of metal and paperclip. I uh, yeah thats not an acomplishment, but hey.

My first ironically was a master lock 130 it is 4 pin 1 spool I picked it with a slimmed down nail file and a straightened key clip basicly a 3 inch strip of steel about 1 mm wide.
Lunas Eclipse 2 lock i opened was a assa 5 pin and when i got it open i was like holy shieet best feeling ever

I can imagine the reaction if I asked my local locksmith for old locks, they had a fit when I asked after unkeyed cores for padlocks... Apparently mere mortals are not ready for lock technology, only those who have been anointed as Licensed Locksmiths are worthy.

Got a kit yesterday, pick both locks, a 7pin padlock, and another lock in 15secs, i bought them to learn a new hobby, feel ive learned alot in a short space of time, now contemplating seeing how hard or easy to break into my own house, didnt want to try so early incase i was to unfortunately damage the lock, i believe id do it so easy, have to buy more locks now. Thats me hooked

I am now going to move onto picking, however, I am a visual learner and need to SEE what I'm doing to process it.
What would be your recommendation/opinion for a "trainer" type of clear lock for practice for a beginner.

I found a relatively cheap ($35) clear lock online. I think that I need to be able to see what I'm doing and it would be a good investment. Also, thanks for your comments on the 140. I seem to be hit or miss on that and the fact that I didn't know it had "difficulties: built in makes me feel a little better. I definitely feel that I'm lucky with that one.

Just got my Master Lock 140! First real lock i've picked and got it with in 40 seconds. Opened it many more times so far, sometimes it does take me an upwards of 6+min , so still a very weird feeling lock. Since I've only got youtube videos for learning and this was the first real lock attempt, the practice lock did not do justice because it did not feel or sound like a lock at all. It's amazing to see what you guys say actually map out to a feeling in your fingers or hand.

Get a Master padlock, the ones made out of mutiple layers. They are quite cheap.
Dear Bosnianbill, thanks so much for your videos. For 4 years I've been looking for a lost key to open my house safe. It has a combination lock (which I knew the combination) but requires a key to open the door once the combination is set. 4 years looking for that key!! 4 years!!! After watching many of your videos and several others, I ordered my first pick set but it would take 3 weeks to arrive. You keep talking about making your own tools with wipers and ordinary items readily available. I made my tension wrench by grinding a hexa-key to a flat surface and my pick was made from a filed-down metal wire from a hanging file folder. Armed with these homemade basic tools I attacked my safe keylock and 6 minutes later, my safe was opened! I can't begin to describe how excited I was and the rush it brought.
I don't want to pick my safe lock every time I need to open my safe so not sure what the best approach would be. Change the cylinder (assuming I can disassemble it), have a key made by a locksmith or somehow get rid of the whole cylinder?. The safe is used for fire protection, not robbery prevention (

Great video. I got the urge to pick a lock a few weeks ago, was successful in unlocking it and that was all it took for me to be addicted to the challenge. Most of the locks I tackled so far have been pickable, but one padlock on the shed is just frustrating the hell out of me and it isn't a big lock so I thought it should be simple to pick. This morning I decided to get some tips on uncle Google's tube and in this video at 8:15 you had in hand close to the same lock I couldn't pop, I have the Master 140 and before this video did not know about the security pins . After checking out LocksmithArmy as you suggested I had that lock popped in 20 min. Thank You for making a video with some value that held my interest until the end.

i could not find that either. Too bad after all the hype. I did find a PDF with pics called 'Lock Picking Guide' which was helpful. It didn't make me better immediately like stated but it took my frustration away from not finding the other.

I watched this about a month ago after I’d just gotten my picks. I watched it again tonight and it immediately helped me with my SPP! You outline a great progressive approach to advancing your skills. I’ll be incorporating that into my practice!
It's much easier if you have the perk that allows you to start near the sweet spot for the lock. But you need to level up your lock picking skill to 100 first...
thanks for the advice and the link to lockpicking detail overkill, i got my southford picks 3 days ago and untill i read LDO all i managed to pic was a cheap padlock, after reading that i picked my front door in under 2 minutes and then quickly worked through the euro cylinders ive been struggling with. my advice to anyone starting out is understand how to feel the binding order and the rest is easy to work out when youre in there.

Want to thank you for all the material sources and excellent advice you and the Lawyer put out. I have this American Lock 700 and knowing that it is beyond my ability at present I started trying to pick it. I'm taking the advice on this video because you've earned my trust and gave me confidence to keep trying.The series 700 was not budging, I discovered that I needed a top of the key way tension wrench just as you suggest and advice here. I have been buying Sparrows pickers and other goodies. One was their bypass tool. It was not working, after watching you demonstrate the wafer defeat several times I got the gist of the action. So I went for the top of the key way with my thickest .04 bar, wish I had a .05 one last time. But while picking I began to sense a hint of a false set and it occurred to me to try the Sparrow bypass again. While keeping the tension with the bar after a false set I began to try to feel the inside back of the lock and jiggling and gently turning until the thing clacked open. Wish I had the Peterson bypass, seems more precise in the flag shape you showed, but the Sparrows did it. Will be taking the core to the locksmith for a replacement. Thanks for the date code you shared as well, it was manufactured in XGI. So I figured it ought not have the security wafer and sure enough, it didn't. Now I want to locate your other video where you show how to make these old locks better than they were. Thank you.

I decided to learn this skill because a) I'm not really doing a whole lot these days, lol! and b) I used to be able to jimmy a door lock open with a coathanger (honestly only did this when someone was locked out). I did it once when I had no money for a locksmith or new window, and damn, that feeling you mention...that little shot of adrenaline, I got it...and I want it again!
It's the same feeling we get when unlocking any puzzle, I think.
So anyway, yeah...no time like the present!
My first set is a $35 Amazon kit that has 3 practice locks in it, which should arrive in the next couple hours. I'm sure I'll find the tools I like and plan to order higher quality ones if I stick with it.
But I digress (often!)...
