Shane Burcaw (he/him) is the author of several award-winning books about disability. He is the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah Burcaw (she/her) graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog, which has over 800,000 subscribers on TH-cam. Hannah has spoken at prestigious universities and Fortune 500 companies alike about the realities of ableism. On her popular Instagram account, she advocates for acceptance of all people and works to improve the way society thinks about disability.
Shane and Hannah have been together for over four years. They got married in September of 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic in their backyard, with their officiant conducting the ceremony via Zoom. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

Your comment about the joint income affecting your benefits really saddens me. I had been engaged to a wonderful disabled man, we lived together and really wanted to be married. Unfortunately, we were never able to get married because, together, we earned about $25 above the cut off( so basically we were dirt poor.) We couldn't risk him losing his medical benefits, obviously, so we were never married. He died a few years later. I will always consider him my first husband, but it just feels like such discrimination to me. Something needs to be done about this; it's just not right. God bless both of you. I love your channel.

That's so sad, I'm glad you had such a wonderful relationship, & I wish there wasn't such difficulty to marry & still maintain benefits.
I know , it's horrible :( not everyone has millions of dollars like these 2 and it's much more difficult to get by. Things need to change
I have disabilities and it sucks that to get benefits I have to be poor. It would be great to have benefits based more in how much care costs verses only how much you earn.
My husband and I are legally married and we both have cerebral palsy. At first we didn't thank we could get legally married due to income limits so we just had a comment ceremony. However, we had an lawyer who specialize disability issue research if we could legally and still make a reasonable income. Turns out we could so we did! I know the income limits it varies from state to state. We live in Texas.

I got married in late 2019 and the only thing I wish I knew beforehand is that I would shortly after become disabled. I’ve always had health issues but never ones that have stopped me from working, so I thought I’d always be okay. I can’t work now and trying to find programs I qualify for as a married person is really difficult. If I had known what would happen to my health prior to getting married I don’t know if we would have gone through with a legal wedding simply because sit cuts off so many possible benefits. Still so happy to have a man to stand by me through all of my ups and downs. 💙
It's not only unfair, it's dangerous! People who are disabled and find themselves in a domestic violence situation have no income of their own to enable them to leave.

We had a lovely ceremony in a hotel with less than 30 people. Then we had afternoon tea and went home.
I don’t regret not having a party for my extended family at all.

Shane’s ability to keep a straight face during his more elaborate jokes is extremely impressive. The way he told the Nerds story without laughing for like two minutes while Hannah was dying laughing next to him… I wouldn’t be able to do it LOL. Love y’all’s channel!
I think it’s nice you are having a celebration of your marriage with your family. My husband and I did a very similar thing almost 28 years ago. We ran off and eloped in Las Vegas. Mainly because I was very shy and the thought of standing in front of everyone and talking terrified me. When we got back from the elopement, we had a lovely party with all our love ones that did NOT include me having to make a grand entrance. I have special memories from that day without the dread. Hoping your celebration is all you want to be! You two bring a lot of joy to people with your adorable videos! Congratulations!

Honestly, if I ever get married (would definitely like to, just not sure it'll happen), I'm tempted to just go to the courthouse with the most important people, and then do like a cookout at home with anybody else who wants to come. Nothing about the wedding itself appeals to me, except maybe walking down the aisle. I say, save the money for the honeymoon.
We had a meat loaf impersonator as we both love his music, it was the first thing we talked about when we met and I really didn’t care if everyone else enjoyed it but they loved him!! Also we aren’t religious so just wanted a big old party and that’s why we were so relaxed and kept the budget quite low. We still had the best time, enjoy your second best day and can’t wait to see pics!!!

We eloped (us, 5 immediate family members, and the officiant) and we've never regretted it! We were able to gave a stress-free day that was about US and our commitment rather than guests. It was affordable and beautiful and we still had a photographer and videographer to document the memory. Best decision ever.

The care giver stuff is so frustrating. My grandparents were only allowed a care giver for a certain amount of years, so my gramma used her years first and the insurance was paying $18/hr, then when her benefits ran out, they planned to keep the care giver they had for years when they switched to my grandfathers benefits, but his insurance only paid $9/hr, so to keep the same care giver, they had to pay the extra amount out of pocket, because they didn’t want to lose the care giver they trusted. And obviously they were both retired and had very little income. It’s truly unfair.

me and my wife have been married also two times! in the same year! first in januari when she came over from canada to live here in holland for the law,simple and fast,small dinner with family and in sept the same year ,my wife wanted a church wedding and a after party in the evening..well always must do what they want to make them happy, i pick her up for going to church and i found a carrige with two beautiful horses and she didn,t know,big suprice! people calling and smiling as we drive to town and i keep screeming HELP !! hahahha but we are 12 years further and we still happy,

For several reasons my husband and I did not have dancing at our wedding...43 years ago in October. We had a trio perform some songs, we had an illusionist perform some illusions and a comedian. .We also had guests share memories, some where funny, some embarrassing and some reflective. . We all had a blast and some still talk about it....almost 43 years later..

My husband and I had each been married once before (widow) and had no interest in doing the proper wedding thing again. We eloped and then had a back yard reception for the family (pizza and donuts) it was perfect and there were no headaches. I highly recommend Skipping out on a big ceremony

I figured out fast that a wedding is what your mother in law wants and shut it down and we went to the courthouse! Not spending a bunch of money to have people upset anyways, may as well have them upset and save the money. BUT…. no one gets you a present if you don’t give them an event. So that’s sad. 😂😂😂

My husband and I got married in January, 2002 and had the wedding in June, 2002. His family couldn't make it to the wedding, so we decided to go ahead and get married and then have a wedding later. It worked out and truly, the only ones affected was us. I love ya'lls banter back and forth. Nerds will always remind me of ya'll now.

My daughter and her husband are in the same situation. We have pushed back their wedding date 3 times thanks to Covid…..and the USArmy 😂. We are so close…..now comes a $@#*% hurricane 🙄😳😩. Marriage would feel differently if you both didn't live together before you were married, my husband moved in with me after we got married, while we were dating and engaged we didn't live together so after we got married he moved in with me, his wife and it felt different, but very comfortable and right

I am going to a wedding next weekend that had to be cancel a year ago due to Covid. They also ended up getting married at that time but the celebration will be next week.
