Why you NEED to turn off Microsoft Start in Windows 11

- Microsoft's Start in Windows 11 comes with a whole load of crap but could you get malware from it? Days ago I received an email about crapware, RestoreX360, bragging about being on msn.com and therefore the start menu. Block trackers and spying with DNS: controld.com/ (sponsor)

how does granny have Wave Browser and One UI launch searchbar? Oh, she clicked on an article in the start menu, went to a site with a ton of ads, clicked yes on the "would you like notifications from this page" dialogue box, got an Edge delivery notification from a connected site of the site host saying "Your web experience may be slow, get this add on to make it better!" Goes to the Edge/Chrome add on page, adds a malicious extension that downloads the kit to install the programs, and then they bypass UAC to edit registry to persist even if they are uninstalled. And Windows Defender doesn't consider them malicious... Good job Windows.

UAC is the best tool ever for teaching people to ignore the text and click on a "Yes" button.
I really hate windows with burning passion, even tho I daily drive it. The audacity, the disrespect they have for their users is unmatched
Js get linux
@@Spectrulight i've been distrohopping for a while on my old laptop. But then I settled on windows again bc i got a gaming machine and the experience on linux in that department wasn't good + i really needed ms office. Libreoffice just wasn't it for me.
Indeed!
@@Spectrulight agreed, that's why I've been slowly moving to linux! It's been a great experience!
I'm looking to buy like a really cheap but sturdy laptop which I can use for work purposes by converting it to a Linux OS, while keeping my main laptop (the one i'm using rn) as a Windows-gaming laptop (I play VAL lol, frickin Riot Games) and use the other one as a daily driver.
I was convinced that Linux is the future of daily-use computing thanks to the alarming news we get on this channel, and this other channel called "No Boilerplate".
"I switched to Linux" comments when someone says windows is bad: 📈📈📈📈📈📈
Probably looking into this - (as do pc support - at moment voluntary for disabled people) need to have dual boot into Mindows and Linux - with me probably gradually going more and more to Linux; Windows screwing us around with trying to force Bitlocker & Co-Pilot -> Recall cobblers is certainly mi^%^%^ me off and others; like Deja 1984 control.
@@dafyddthomas7299 All my machines are Debian12 except for my PC as I do fusion360 and have to use word etc. I did try running a windows VM in kvm but it was a pain in the ass.
But Windows is really bad. Though Linux is not good enough either, it is still better and the only alternative for a PC.
@mkatakm
Windows = Bad | Linux = Not Good Enough.
ThAT'S the reason I'm still not switching over, personally. Until they develop a way to make you be able to do everything Windows can, not just gaming, without there being technical problems, I'll pass. I don't give a shit to invest my time scavenging the internet for an esoteric line of commands, assuming there is even a result. The thought of having to do that all over again if my SSD goes bad is not appealing at all.
@@bugsbunny4647isn't wine just that?
That widget is like ADHD on a stick. Instant distraction from whatever the hell it was you logged on to do
It's even worse when you actually have ADHD.
Oh yes.
The edge start page is bad enough, but MS putting that into the UI is bordering on criminal.
Ever since Satya took over MS, it has been going downhill.
Microsoft is an intelligence agency. Realise this & you will understand why & what they do.
@@Turco949corruption. & it's all core-coded in Israel.
Enemy of the world.
It really is, and combined with blocking start menu improvement software they need to be sued.
would have been actually criminal, but Microsoft's lawyers are so good they'll make it look "borderline" xD
This ad crap needs to end. If users pay for MS 365 or have paid for a license (most don't though they claim) then this ad crap needs to go
They'll only stop if they lose money or get in a legal battle.
yeah. we pay between 50 and 100 bucks for each device with a windows license(mainly laptops). no joke.
I gave microsoft money in various ways. Having an xbox for example. And i use the same accounts in windows. Anyway, if ads stay in 11, i will never use it again, and i will make sure, the company i work in it will see it the same way.
Well if you look back to the Windows XP/7 days a windows license was as much as 400 bucks. Nowadays the price is 1/4 of that, and because of this, Microsoft is putting more ads into their operating system to balance their stock price.
@@lukeb7954 Not a bad point but rarely only a handful of people buy Windows license directly from Microsoft paying full price. In most cases it's OEM license or something. Given Adobe charges so much money for their software it makes sense the whole OS would cost more but still ads especially intruding ones are bad like this video showed. They can be used to spread malware
this only show why all ppl are moving back to win10, over 70% ppl are still on that old win rather than upgrading to win11, i tried it and win11 overall is awfull respect win10
windows 10 might be the same because of the news and interest
Windows 10 won't be supported in very near future. I love 10 but now I have 11 (new PC) ..which i'm not thrilled with inerface and all the hidden offs and ons buttons /switches etc. And now theres windows 12 on the horizen to contend with.
Windows 10 will be still used for many even after Microsoft ditches support, like Windows 7.
That doesn't mean too much if you consider how many people are still on internet explorer. People are resistant to change, regardless of whether the change is good or bad.
This problem can happen to anyone that uses the MSN website, regardless of the version of Windows. The site aggregates news articles from various reputable sources, but displays a large amount of adverts disguised to look like news. My 85 year old mum clicked on one of those, and got a fake AV message that went full screen, scaring her to death. Fortunately, through remote access, I fixed that pretty quickly. Then I changed her DNS to Quad9, hopefully to block other malicious stuff - she wont stop using MSN.
Market share for Win10 went up, market share of Win11 went down, ha-ha!
First thing I install on windows 11 is windows tweaker and disable all add and online features of windows except mail. There are better alternatives for everything.
There's are better alternatives for mail too. Thunderbird is my choice. Otherwise, you're probably better off using the browser client than trusting Microsoft not to snoop your mail.
Edit: for anyone who wants to try it, ***last I knew*** Micorsoft emails/exchange support is limited - something to do with how Microsoft's handles (or doesn't) 3rd party apps. I think they (Thunderbird) fixed it, or is still working on it- again haven't checked in a while.
Never used this, but going to give it a try also
You can also try out the tool that Chris Titus made, brilliant tool @@mattymatte6289
Some malware can bypass OS tweaks easily, Leo has already talked about it. I don’t think he would recommend messing up your system with third party apps which may not even give support for customers. I am not saying Microsoft is perfect but I will be staying with their software, I don’t want to risk my pc to get malware through that special OS😄
@@wissy006 The tweaker I use is only able to disable and enable windows features that you can do manually with a bit of research.
just one remark: if/when the PC becomes slow - 9 out if 10 it is indeed software problem, not hardware. Either bloatware or updated programms with higher system requirements. Rolling back to original software or just removing all the bloat easily makes the pc perform as when it was new.
Except when the hardware is very old, like using a core2duo to run windows 10.
@@Anas7ergun well, win 10 with all the bloat removed and extra s**t turned off actually on pair with older win7, 8 in terms of resource usage. The underlying os's core is the same between all those systems.
@@Anas7ergun Like walmart's flipping truck "FAST" sorter machine.... 1.9Ghz per core too...
@@Anas7ergun Then Windows 10 contains “bloatware” from Core 2 Duo perspective.
I would say these days it is the other way around, 9/10 times its just the hardware and inefficient programs, and 1/10 times it is because of issues that can be actually fixed by removing stuff/changing settings etc. A lot of people just have a slow laptop and desperately hope they can make it "faster" without spending much money, which is exactly the audience these tune up utilities target to scam.
Linux is looking like a more attractive option every day.
As someone who hates linux im starting to feel the same
Wherever I go see these comments, like cmon most of us use Windows because Linux ist for gaming

Linux is accessible for normies now, it's not like how it was years ago.
I love how the start menu is just straight up not a start menu anymore. Last time we saw a real start menu was on Windows 7
When Win11 first hit here in Australia it checked my desktop and laptop for compatibility. The desktop failed, even though it was only a year or two old, Ryzen 7 chip, 16Gb ram. But Win11 said there was something in there that disqualified it. The Dell XPS13 laptop was OK. But I wasn't going to have two different systems so I'm still on Win10. Win11 still wants to me update and gives me reminders every few months. But the more I hear about Win11 the less inclined I am to go for it.
I found out in my old laptop that the TPM chip was just disabled and it was quite simple to fix
Lucky enough for me, the Widgets function of Windows 11 was disabled when I upgraded from Windows 11 Home to Windows 11 Pro (weird.) I never used it anyway. Plus, I use RetroBar for my taskbar and Start11 for my start menu.
It's insane the idiocy Microsoft is pushing
Yep, disabled widgets first thing, if I want to see something I can find it myself (also disabled all suggestions from start menu)
This should not be present or installed in production environment, It's distracting to employees who work with their workstation. and now that microsoft announce the EoL of windows 10 on 2025. WTF Microsoft!
The EoL has been set since the OS initially released.
W10 LTSC 2021 IoT will still get support until 2032
You can disable all of this. Pretty sure you can even bake it into a group policy but I'd have to look more into that. Not that you should even have to do that but it is an option.
If you install windows on a office computer (Doing proper installment) you will not get this buy default, this is for personalized installations for home use not workstations
I ripped out the start menu so much it doesn't even function as a search. It was so slow, that me pushing the windows key then typing brave, wouldn't register the *B* and then it would start searching *rave* which means I want the baltimore *rave* -ns right? Not the application I use, every day, in the same way. Having me, delay my typing, so the function could catch up to my typing, is such a fucking laughable situation when computers have surpassed windows 7 super computers and yet have a worse performance on every level. Bro LOOK AT THIS 0:01 When do you need to ever know anything shown on this screen without searching?
Microsoft really are promoting reasons to switch to Linux.

Great Video - love the simple setting you shared at Settings->Show or Hide Feeds 4:18 (easy when you know how and unfortunately I didn't) and the ControlD software which I will look at shortly. Thanks for Sharing!
I can't help but wonder how well controlled the connection to the ad server is. Is this something an attacker will be able to Man in the Middle on a public wifi network and serve their own malicious ads?
I would hope they are using HTTPS, so probably very unlikely. But also, if you're on public wifi and not taking any measures to protect yourself, then this vector would be no worse than any other.
It might be easier for a bad actor to just set up a legit web site, buy an ad package from Microsoft to promote the site, and then at some point switch out the content on the legit site with malicious links.
I can't imagine that Microsoft would do much in the way of continuous checks for malware (although I am happy to be corrected on this).
Those vpn ads have sure been spreading a lot of misinformation about how networks work. As a software engineer myself, MitM attacks on a public network are not the big worries regarding these ads. HTTPS basically takes care of that for you. The malware served in the ads as well as the user data collected in order to serve the ads are my worries.
"If your computer is slow, if it's not working well, that's probably because your hardware is outdated..."
Or... alternatively said you are using Windows... Sometime the PC users are shocked to see their 10+ years computers working just fine with some lightweight Linux distribution. Or, pretty recent PCs, which were marketed as "cheap" and "for home" and you find out that they sell it with 8 or even 4 GB of RAM. Yes, even nowadays you can buy such laptop... and not as bargain! Sometime even above $500!

I disable everything that MS keep throwing on the taskbar. Anything other than a Start button, open programs and the small bits to the right is not belong here, I disable them all. The taskbar is fine and is finished since Win XP era, it doesn't need anymore crap added.
Security Vector is increased day by day, what to include and what not is become challenging, the zero day should also be treated as extreme and treated accordingly, what if malware could use ai and do Hazardous things before user could notice or even knows it.
Never been much of a W11 critic, but the news panel pisses me off. We had a perfectly fine news app. Or weather. I don't want to read that from their repost website on the browser where I'm actually doing stuff.
Unfortunately in UK most of our News Apps / news sites are crammed up with bloated Ad's - that hog up the screens and in end just give up
WIndows is getting worse and worse. Im happy i use linux as a daily driver and if something doesn't work on linux i just boot into win11 thanks for the information!

windows having a popup to show weather and other information before login on boot up is also very worrying. Not only is a live session having adware under guise of boosting productivity but its being brought to other parts of the os very scary to what could happen if there are any vulns chained before even user input could log in with password.
After installed the Windows 11, I just hide it the Windows Widget on the taskbar.
Thank you for the news and tips, Leo!
Windows 11 is just so much worse than Windows 10, the only real reasons to switch are incredibly stupid and could easily just be patched into Windows 10. Direct Storage API, tabs in file explorer, dark mode for task manager and notepad. That's it. Everything else sucks and there's so much more bloat, spyware, and crap.
OMG! 4:30 minutes into the video before you showed how to disable? You made the point in the first 20 seconds!
Worse is random software being promoted in answers on the Microsoft support forum. A user has a Windows issue and answers are given with links to little known or unknown software links.
"Hardware is outdated, no software will fix that" Linux would like to have a word with you
For real though, Linux has saved so many great PCs that are still working flawlessly dispite windows 10 originally slowing it down to a grinding halt
I am surprised no one has commented that it's NOT the start menu. It's the widget menu. I always disable it and I change the start menu immediately as well. Both suck.
That's the first thing I noticed. He's clicking on weather widget, not start menu. But still very disconcerting.
TL;DR
Turn off Microsoft Start from the Widgets if you feel like it, but unless you click on the links nothing will happen.
5:04 Why doesn’t ControlD work with VPNs?
Yeah I switched it off in mine a week ago along with the widgets (not sure if they are the same thing). I've been using Win11 for around a month now, lol.
Not due to malware but because of the shitty sites it spammed, like "10 ways to do X" with those fecking slideshows with ads every 2 slides or so.

What is the difference between Control D and Portmaster? Is Portmaster good enough?
If you disable widgets with the task bar the process is still running so I found a script that completely removes it. Might have to do the same with Edge browser because that is always running in the background too.
How is that you still have the old Email app from microsoft? I have the one updated from outlook and its a disgrace

How does ControlD compare to Portmaster?
Probably mass deployment -- Portmaster is installed per device, whereas with ControlD, their DNS server would just have to be set on either each device or just the router.

Beyond just Windows' sketchy business as of lately, I would really love some massive legitimacy inquiry campaign on advertisers as a whole. So many shady practices, so many downgrades in user experiences, so many threats towards security and privacy, so many wasted resources, all that for a drop of ads...

When I click on MSN news articles from the start menu, is there a way to have those articles open in a different browser other than MSN or Edge?
I have witnessed on multiple occasions a user clicking on a link on the edge start screen, and it immediately go into one of those pop-up sides that says you've been infected to call the number on the screen.
Does anyone know Windows running on virtual machines on Azure and Windows 365 have this an other annoying and potentially malware delivery systems? These Windows instances run on hardware and networks owned by Microsoft. If any of these virtual machines are infected with malware, the bugs can easily spread to other virtual machines in these cloud ecosystems. In short, does Microsoft protect itself more than it protects its customers who use their own hardware in their own networks?
Thank you! One more reason not to upgrade to Win11 or move to Linux.
Whoever edits Microsoft Start clearly has a beef against Boeing. They repeatedly post distorted articles criticizing Boeing quality. Any issues that arises with a Boeing aircraft, even if it is with an old airliner, is immediately used to criticize Boeing quality control. What do you mean? Do you intend to tell me microsoft doesn't have my best interest in mind when showing me those articles after I paid 299$ for my windows license? I don't believe you! They are the best company in the world and they would never endanger their customers with something such as articles not directly vetted by their employees so that no viruses get in my computer that is also protected by microsoft defender, the second best product in history, after microsoft windows of course. So no, I will not disable anything that Bill Gates himself chose for me to see or do when he knows what's best for all of us. He and his company have our best interest in mind and you can't convince me. Otherwise we wouldn't be trusting and using their amazing products.
The fact that Microsoft does this when there are viable alternatives to their product is hilarious. The fact that users tolerate it is mindblowing.
I can’t tell you where to get it, but find an iso of Windows 10 LTSC. It’s basically a modern Windows 7. Doesn’t come with Edge installed, or even the Microsoft app store. Pretty much just Internet Explorer and Notepad. (You can manually install the store if you want though.) It’s designed for important infrastructure like hospital equipment, and doesn’t have any of the bloat and borderline malware that normal Windows 10/11 has. Obviously it’s not sold to consumers, because Microsoft wants to shove ads and edge down your throat, while exfiltrating all your personal data for sale via telemetry. You can easily find verified clean isos on the high seas though. I highly recommend giving it a shot. If it didn’t exist, I wouldn’t be using Windows at all anymore. It’s leagues better than normal Win10 + DWS.
MS has always done this kind of thing. Remember when MS allowed senders to include executable attachments in email and they would run a soon as the recipient opened it?
wdym need? sane ppl use cut down iso and noobs just wont bother
I personally just deactivated it manually when getting Win10 because it's unnecessary clutter and bloatware.
Does Portmaster and ControlD play nice together?
I would say that Portmaster is a very friendly application. You may need to reconfigure some of its settings, like secure DNS tab, but besides this it should work smoothly as your system firewall. ControlD looks to me like an advanced (but paid) version of PiHole. In this case there should be no problem
I have MSN blocked in everyway shape and form. With fire walls and all my browsers. I ran into this some years ago with malware.
How to deactivate Microsoft Start or the Widgets Icon with a Script?
I went a step further on my new laptop, I turned off Windows 11!!!! ;) (reinstalled Win 10)
The first thing to do with a new Windows 11 computer: Insert the Windows 10 install DVD in the DVD drive, then boot from it.
I've turned it off at least a handful of times and it just keeps turning itself back on after every update
Unfortunately this is true - we users probably need to check on Bitlocker and Co-pilot Recall settings - Although at moment my understanding Co-pilot Recall is only enabled for new PC's / Tablets with NPU's built in and based on Snapdragon X Elite Platform - I could be very wrong on this
