@@RGT85 Do you know if you *have* to use the copy to cartridge option on the system in order to save the progress you've made while playing on the Retron, or can you use the normal in game saving method (in this case Pokemon) and play it later on a Gameboy?
Nice video Shawn! The only thing I forgot was it was compatible with blue tooth controllers. Another tip is, besides translation packs, you can use hacks as well; which saves you a ton of money then buying the hacks in physical form
+RetroGamingTube 85 Cheers for the hint about the translation patch. I was wondering how I was going to get through my recent pickup of Bahamut Lagoon.
When i save my file while using a fan translation can i have the save to my japanese cart still. Not expecting the game to be in english on the cart but atleast my save onto it.
Got my Super Famicom games ordered and patches downloaded, my body is ready! Thanks for all that you do, I've been subbed for a while and never stumbled across this vid.
I was just informed about the Retron 5 for recording for my channel by a friend who sells retro games in my area. And funny enough Sweet Home was one of the main reasons I wanted to get the Retron 5 and you use it in your video for the Translation portion of your video. Love your opinions on everything and love your channel!
+RetroGamingTube 85 Thanks i plan on it ive been wanting to start a small collection to get games i enjoyed as a child to play but i live in a small one bedroom place and just dont have the physical space for an old tv and all the consoles so this is a good modern altrnative i feel. New subscriber also!!
Great video mate. I just traded mine in for a Retro Freak, they are very similar, but I wanted some PC Engine action, and just the one console under the TV screen.
Awesome Info on the Retron 5 bro! I did not know about the English patch files that you can put on the SD card for certain Famicom/Super Famicom games, Now i do! Thanks dude!
nice video buddy I grabbed the retron at launch and had no idea about the language package so cheers for the info, and that controller you showed looked sweeeeet!
I still play my Retron 5 when it comes to JRPGs that are imports, and I do not regret playing those on there in one bit. Didn't know about the NES30 as that is something I'll have to definitely check out when I get the chance.
Ordered my RetroN 5 on Amazon, it came with the latest firmware (03.4) and application software (2.5) already installed. No initial patching required, good to go from the box.
Whoa! Retro RGT video talking retro video games! I’m thinking about getting a retron 5 in 2023 because it doesn’t seem like there’s a better option for the price all these years later!!!
It looks like your Retron 5 is CRUSHING your games shelf, haha. I want to grab one some day, just not for 120+ bucks. One day though. The translation SD card trick is extremely nifty, and might change my mind. Great tips.
+Mile High Game Hunters It's good if you ever want to capture footy or do streams, and when your channel gets bigger (and it will, you guys are good for sure) you'll probably want to snag one. And I had to balance that shit with those NES games. lol. The system is light.
Well shit, that's awfully nice of you to say man! We really appreciate that, and hope you're right! Ahhh, I understand now. On video it looked like the shelf was bowing.
The Retron 5 can also play Mark III games and MyCard games. The cart adapter that Tototek sells is good for this. The official wireless controllers from Sega also work with the R5. You need controller extension cables to connect the IR receiver.
+RetroGamingTube 85 Yep :) And I just subbed. I'm enjoying your other vids as well. And totally unrelated to this but kudos to you man for speaking out on the shenanigans regarding the farce that is the Coleco Chameleon.
No problem buddy. Thank you for the sub. Some people felt I was a bit late and too hopeful for the console, but I just didn't want to burn my torch too soon so to speak. Now it's time though. lol
I have a broken virtua racing game for the genesis. I have 3 working genesis systems neither will play that game, but it works on the Retron 5 so if you have any cartridges that wont play on their respective systems try it out on the Retron 5 it may work? I almost threw out virtua racing out glad I didn't.
This is seriously one of the greatest and most helpful videos I have ever seen! As a modern day retro gamer myself, I'm always hoping to do more with my classic game collection. Thanks so much! Subscribed!
Great information. Haven't decided if I ever want to get one of these as I already own all the consoles it supports. Definitely has its place for those that want to condense down on their space or want to only record footage from one console instead of switching cables around all the time. Do you have any recommendations on one of the portable systems that lets you play SNES games on the go? I know there's the Supaboy and RetroDuo Portable, but I have no idea what's the best on the market right now and I really want to get one! Thanks!
+Retro Power Up I like the SupaBoy. Plays everything I throw at it, can output to a TV, and has a great look to it. Couple draw backs but I've beaten games like Turtles in Time on it. I haven't tried the RetroDuo Portable but I *think* it's out of production.
+PictureProductStudio The Retron 5 is sweet man, a must own for someone like me for sure. And yeah, I'm getting all my ducks in a row and awaiting the Kickstarter on that beast. Then we will see how I address it. Could be a scorcher ;)
+KWKBOX It would be nice if they also added a CD drive to it. so you can play some of the games form the Sega CD, the CD add on for the Turbo graphics, etc.
theres one called "retro freak" that is meant to play turbo gfx games. japan only for now. www.funstock.co.uk/news/can-the-retro-freak-be-the-best-retro-gaming-device-of-all-time/
+RetroGamingTube 85 - ive been watching some vids on it today actually. Seems pretty cool too. may order one from amazon.jp . ill check out gamers video on it as well.
Are you able to use the NES30 to play SNES games on the retron? A big draw back with 8bitdo's retro receiver is that it only lets you use the buttons found on a NES controller, and I don't want to make that mistake again.
Yep. I was playing Maximum Carnage with my Nes30Pro and my SFC30. It takes a little bit to set up first and I had to cusomise the button layout in the retron but it does work fine.
I absolutely love the Retron 5. It has saved me the hassle of switching systems individually (and all the AV and power cords/bricks). I use an HDMI to VGA with Audio converter adapter, in combination with an old VGA to S-Video converter (both of which I had laying around) to use the Retron 5 on an actual CRT TV, and it looks great!! Just turn off all filters and it looks as good as the original consoles in NTSC. There are ways to make this conversion much easier (HDMI to Composite/S-Video converters, to skip the middle man).
I've heard lots about the retron5 in the retro gaming Facebook groups (sega retro, Nintendo retro, etc) but I'm still waiting to find one for cheap. the debate is always original hardware vs emulation. the gaming store near me uses it to allow people to test games out, and for that purpose it seems to work well.
Great informative video friend! I have had my eye on the Retron 5 for a while now but have been on the fence because some of the games I would want can be really expensive. If it had N64 support it would be awesome. Any idea if there is or will be a model that plays N64 as well?
Thanks for the tips, I will keep this video in mind, I'm not sure yet if I will buy one in the near future but knowing now that you even can use translation patches makes me more interested. Just wish it could also play N64 games.
I've read about people having problems restoring save data to cartridges, though those might have been old reviews. Has all of that been fixed in the latest version? What really interest me is the ability to transfer saves back onto battery cartridges. Is that possible with Game Boy Color Saves?
Use an SD-card for translation patches....or why not roms? I find this very useful in case the Retron5 doesn´t read my cartridge (some of them won´t) or play those really rare/valuable games without wear your copies out. All in all, with all it deficiancies...I love the Retron5!
On the down side updates are a pain in the ass tried to update on my mac and apparently I need a PC to do this which I do not have, so I have to get a friend to do this, they should have internet capability if only for updates, don't need it to play just for the updates.
+RGT 85 Hey I own the 1st party "bulky" Power base converter from Sega. Do you know if the Retron 5 recognizes the card reader on it? I don't own any cards, but would be interested in purchasing one if it does.
what is that called to play masters system? I saw the hyperkin 3 in 1 adapter but it's so expensive like $80is cad. do you have a video on how we save on retron 5? we plan on getting our retron 5 in March I hope . I have a nes but it's driving me crazy the pins need to be cleaned I think I can do it but I haven't tried it yet, then a neighbour gavd me there nes they didn't want and the new cartridge Wont go down, problem with springs I haven't searched a video on how to fix that problem yet.. Tks for the video, following :)
Do repros work ok this console? I bought one recently and looking online for Pulseman and Alien Soldier. If repros do work, any recommendations where to buy? Thanks.
There's one thing about the retroon 5 that you did not mention, that an sd card is required to update the framewaire since it's not updated at time of purchase. To play some games it's needs the update, and that half the time the Machine doesn't want to work I've had 2 with the same issues first thing that goes is the controller ports then sometimes the system doesn't want to work at all, the only thing that worked on both of mine was the game boy slots. I don't recommend the system much cheaper to own the real thing.
+Review Central I think they had 2 batches of releases though. The original ones had a lot of issues, but the second ones came with the latest firmware and are much more stable. I think. lol. I have all the OG consoles myself, but it's handy for capturing footage.
Hi there! thanks for the review. you spoke very well ahd the tips like translation are amazing! I have a question though. I hear that there are more than one version of the retron 5. That the first version had something called cartridge lock (I think?) how can we identify if we are buying the new verison or the old version?? also, do they work with multicarts?
Interesting vid I need to pick one of these up eventually-I've been saying that since the Retron 2 !...I have most all the systems and adaptors but would sure be a time saver sometimes plus the ability to translate, hack, update would be swell...so the original sms adapter will fit on the Retron ?
would you recommend the retron 5? I'm getting into retro games from that page you share but I don't want to buy all the systems too pricy. I've got a few nes genisis and snes and gba games I wanna play but no systems
RetroGamingTube 85 I recently watched a review and the review said that sometimes it frezzes up and quits out to the home screen does it still do this?
Did not know about the translation patches! Thats a nice find! I'm not sure if I'll pick one up since I just got a SupaBoy last year, and I got a genesis adapter for that, but If the Retron 6 comes out soon with N64 compatibility, I'll be ALL over that. My N64 was one of the first models, so its seen better days, the power adapter slides out, and the controller is a little wonky from all the use it got.
+RetroGamingTube 85 I use it because I never had a super Nintendo as a kid or a Genesis. and it gave me the best of both, and included portability for about 120 bucks after I bought a set of controllers, the Genesis adapter and a few games including super Mario world.
+RetroGamingTube 85 I got the supaboy for 80 when in was in cali visiting family. and the set of controllers was 10 and I got a good deal on the adapter and super Mario world and a couple games because the guy gave me a coupon from behind the register and his employee discount for letting him test the SupaBoy. I take it with me everywhere Lol. and I wanted to test the snes ges I get before I buy them. Since then, they now stock the supaboy in their shop. so that makes me happy that I inspired that. I believe one of the controllers is a retrobit, but the other is an original she's controller. I also got an 8bitdo zero, but I have so many issues with Bluetooth adapters, it doesn't work except on my phone and only in keyboard mode mapping the keys to the games.
Does anyone know if the 3.1 firmware update will let the R5 play the Retro Bit Holy Diver US release (I guess you can call it a repro even though its a official release)? Also is that the latest update? According to Hyperkin's site, it is.
Waaaaa!? I didn't know about the translation patch and alternative bluetooth controllers! Sweet man, I love this thing more. I hope they make a system for Sega CD and Sega Saturn in the future, or at least allow the use of the Sega 32x addon.
Hi Mate! I have Retron 5 but I'm disappointed with it because it doesn't play Famicom multicarts and some pirate bootleg Famicom games do you know how to solve the problem? I have an idea I think to get a Famicom to Nes adapter.. insert the Famicom pirates on the adapter then on Retron 5 maybe work that way.. can you give me an advice please..? They said Retron 5 has reached 100% compatibility.. witch is a lie.. do you think we would be able to play any cartrige on Retron 5 on the future?
I dusted off my retron 5, it's been sitting for like 5 years. I inserted Mario 3 on the NES and it loaded a save state from world 4. I was super excited
I seen a video of a guy trying out genesis games on a 32x adapter without using the AV cables and it worked. I wonder if anyone tried it out with 32x games?
+Uh oh Spaghetti0s I can't remember lol I just searched for retron 5 32x on TH-cam. I'm pretty sure actual 32x games don't work but Genesis games will when attached to a 32x adapter
Can someone please explain to me how to save progress of a game. I have an sd card with 20k games and someone told me if I dont save properly I chance games getting erased to make room for saved material.
Thanks for this video. I always wanted to get my snes games back but are way to expensive. I can now get Japanese games in box cheaper than lose American versions. Now I can finally collect legit games on a budget
I got myself an nes30pro but I can't seem to get all buttons working playing with my Retron5. The support says "start it in general mode" but how the hell do I do that? It's so frustrating, please anyone help!
Kool video, is there anyway you can do video updates on this and other products, I seen plenty of reviews on this same RateoN 5, that they crash after two weeks to two months. Now I recently bought a brand new SupaBoy same makers btw and i had problems with it. first the sound wouldn't turn on then I just took out the battery clean it then it work a day later same thing happen again but then it crash didn't want to work! Now I'm not trying to bad mouth these products it's possible I just got a defected one that's ok, defected products are everywhere, but sorry my question is can u do updates on how your liking them and enjoying them and pros and con, btw way I return my supaboy and traded it for a used SNES!
Great video, thanks for the info keep it up. Hope you could help me with issues I'm having with a airwolf (nes version) I just bought for my retron 5 (original cart) and clean pins every Maybe you can help me Not sure if it is A compatibility issue or my cartridge because I get a message saying can't drop rom Thanks in advance
i would definitely use the translation patching if i had one and get the cheaper super famicom versions of alot of stuff cuz the snes is just so pricey...even for common crap x.x
For expensive titles that one wants to play, but not pay for, instead of buying famicom and getting a translation patch, couldn't I just use the sd card slot for a rom and pay nothing?
I know I’m a little late but I’m sure you already know this but you can use a sega controller with a nes and snes games and you can use a nes with snes and sega games and so forth! So let’s say you only have one controller and it’s a sega controller you can still play all the games you want! Doesn’t matter what controller your using just as long as your using one of the 3!
I hate to say it, but I kind of wish your new videos were more like this. You speak in a calm and well paced tone throughout the 5+ minutes that does a great job of getting your points across. Clear and concise goes a long way. Thanks for all the content.
Translation patch alone is reason I will likely pick this up. Get the games that weren't released here in North America. Great info Dude.
+RetroR0bbie Always broski!
you can also backup your save data which is awesome, if the battery ran off you still have the save file on retron 5

+downphoenix Yeah it's pretty cool
Thanks brother always enjoy your vids very entertaining!
Hope your day is going Awesome my friend. Also, I really need to get a RETRON 5 So, many system/ games available to play on one machine.
+William true Yeah it's pretty slick and easy to use.
translation patches has me sold. would be sweet having some jp catridges. how common are the patches is there a decent amount of them? great vid!
+iTech Scotland Tons of patches. Pretty much any game that would need them there is one of.
I wish the Retron 6 was out and supported Turbo Grafx games.

Can cheat codes I download be used on games that are part of a single-cartridge multi-game compilations like the NES 500 in 1 compilation??
Do repros work ok this console? I bought one recently and looking online for Pulseman and Alien Soldier. If repros do work, any recommendations where to buy? Thanks.
Cool video! Been debating buying a retron 5. Do you know if it is compatible with the dualshock 4?
Pretty much if you are buying a new one now days, you are getting the 2nd version
Interesting vid I need to pick one of these up eventually-I've been saying that since the Retron 2 !...I have most all the systems and adaptors but would sure be a time saver sometimes plus the ability to translate, hack, update would be swell...so the original sms adapter will fit on the Retron ?
Where can I download translation patches for games? Any major place where I can find lots of them? Thanks.
romhacking.net is the best
I use the .ips translation patching feature all the time since I import Super Famicom games.
+Emmitt Despain (Utahpunk) Right? It's so essential.
I don't have one, but excellent video.
+SegaCDUniverse Thank you buddy.
Is the RetroN 5 Bluetooth? Do I need anything else for the 8bitdo controller?
I still gotta get one of these damn things...
+Aaron Strange Yeah you do. They are fantastic.
would you recommend the retron 5? I'm getting into retro games from that page you share but I don't want to buy all the systems too pricy. I've got a few nes genisis and snes and gba games I wanna play but no systems
I would honestly. It's an all in one solution.
+LVL58Designs I got a SupaBoy as well. I enjoy that system cuz sometimes I like to be lazy in bed and just play on that.
+RetroGamingTube 85 I use it because I never had a super Nintendo as a kid or a Genesis. and it gave me the best of both, and included portability for about 120 bucks after I bought a set of controllers, the Genesis adapter and a few games including super Mario world.
Is that the RetroBit?
Very cool broski
Does anyone know if the 3.1 firmware update will let the R5 play the Retro Bit Holy Diver US release (I guess you can call it a repro even though its a official release)? Also is that the latest update? According to Hyperkin's site, it is.
I need to get one for the sms support
+Shauntendo64 Yeah it's very nice with the Power Base Mini. Plug it in, plug game on top, and you are golden.
currently saving for a retron 5
Waaaaa!? I didn't know about the translation patch and alternative bluetooth controllers! Sweet man, I love this thing more. I hope they make a system for Sega CD and Sega Saturn in the future, or at least allow the use of the Sega 32x addon.
+Vegan Matango I'd love the 32X!
They have one supposedly coming out in limited release this Spring. The Polymega. Plays Sega Cd's, Saturn, ps1, Neo Geo Cd...etc...etc..
It's kind of funny seeing this older video now. You talk a lot softer in this video than in your current videos
Hello i buy the nes30 pro controler for retron yust like yours but i just can pair it to retron. Can you give me the key convination to pair to retron
And you can smooth scale hraphics & enhance sound to make your retro games look & sound better then ever before .
True!
how about muticarts do they play on the retron 5
They do
I dusted off my retron 5, it's been sitting for like 5 years. I inserted Mario 3 on the NES and it loaded a save state from world 4. I was super excited
I seen a video of a guy trying out genesis games on a 32x adapter without using the AV cables and it worked. I wonder if anyone tried it out with 32x games?
Who is it? I have seen videos where someone is obviously just editing pc emulator footage onto retron 5 footage.
+Uh oh Spaghetti0s I can't remember lol I just searched for retron 5 32x on TH-cam. I'm pretty sure actual 32x games don't work but Genesis games will when attached to a 32x adapter
Can someone please explain to me how to save progress of a game. I have an sd card with 20k games and someone told me if I dont save properly I chance games getting erased to make room for saved material.
didnt know about the other Bluetooth controllers thanks
+Michael Moore No problem!
I just ordered one of those controllers from ebay
The problem with the PowerBaseMini is that it doesn't have card game support. Not sure why that was left out.
+P Ferreira True. That's a drawback for sure, but it could be cost reasons.
RetroGamingTube 85 Yeah. Will stick to my converter as I have SMS card games.
Is cool but to save states give me an error how I fix it!???
Can you use any sd card to put into retron5
Thanks for this video. I always wanted to get my snes games back but are way to expensive. I can now get Japanese games in box cheaper than lose American versions. Now I can finally collect legit games on a budget
You can get a Japanese chrono trigger in box for around 35 dollars.
Do reproduction cartridges work on it?
I got myself an nes30pro but I can't seem to get all buttons working playing with my Retron5. The support says "start it in general mode" but how the hell do I do that? It's so frustrating, please anyone help!
There's a video on how to do it but it looks like you can't go to the menu with it like you would by pressing down and start.
I talked to the support and they say i should start with power + L 2 but when i try that The controller never pairs with my retron5.
Can you play nes games with snes controller?
well worth the 5 minutes. thanks.
Great video, thanks for the info keep it up.
Hope you could help me with issues I'm having with a airwolf (nes version) I just bought for my retron 5 (original cart) and clean pins every
Maybe you can help me
Not sure if it is A compatibility issue or my cartridge because I get a message saying can't drop rom
Thanks in advance
I had a grey retron 5 and it didn't last long . So I am kinda hesetant to get the black Retron 5 .
i wonder if the gba -snes adapter works on the tristar 64, i really would like to play gba on my N64, does anyone know if that is possible?
+Nicolas Cortés I am not sure. Hopefully someone will know though.
I would use cheat codes on Flashback. that game is a little confusing at times
+Legend of Crews Agreed. lol.
Hey does the 150 in 1 nes cart work on this?
It should. It works on the retron hd NES.
i would definitely use the translation patching if i had one and get the cheaper super famicom versions of alot of stuff cuz the snes is just so pricey...even for common crap x.x
+shadowtheoblivious Indeed
For expensive titles that one wants to play, but not pay for, instead of buying famicom and getting a translation patch, couldn't I just use the sd card slot for a rom and pay nothing?
+Isaiah Perry There is a way to trick the system into playing roms yes.
Good stuff
