Yes! I've been waiting for someone to review the LCI 30d. I've just picked mine up 3 weeks ago and have been dying to know the real 0-100km. 5.6s is insane. I have the 22inch wheels on adaptive M suspensions and was amazed at how comfortable it was on rubbish Sydney roads. The suspension lets you know what is going on with the road, but still more than comfortable enough without a harsh edge to it like my previous Mercedes. I've just done a 500km road trip and it was effortless. It was around 7L/100km during the whole trip (With city and highway driving). The autonomous hands free driving was so easy to use, and it ate the miles and I didn't feel tired at the end of each drive. I went up a steep muddy/rocky farm road and was shocked it made it up there on summer continental tires without losing traction. The only complaints I have are not having the ability to switch off start stop. Especially when the engine is cold in the morning, I find myself switching between sport mode at every stop to keep the engine on, and switching back to comfort so the rev's aren't too high as I'm still running the engine in. Also, the front middle air condition vents are somewhat blocked by the design, and airflow isn't that great. And the fan speed and noise for level 2 are way higher than the lowest airflow setting so I find myself turning it back to level 1 due to the noise. I quickly got accustomed to the HVAC controls and are easy to use but I still wish there was a dedicated air recirculation button when I'm entering a tunnel (It's 3 buttons deep to turn it on!!). I test drove the 40i and was impressed with how smooth/quiet and torquey it was. But with the prices of 98 petrol and the high revving nature of petrols, I couldn't help but to feel like it was bleeding money while driving it. The nature of diesel how torquey and low revving it is, and cost of fuel, range, while still being sporty when I need it to be made it a winner for me. Overall, the refinement of the cabin and driving is above GLE and Q7/8. I even prefer the cabin's fit n finish to a highly optioned Cayenne as there are still many elements of creaky plastic in the Cayenne. Sensafin is leagues above the vegan leathers of the competitors. As Harry's Garage has mentioned, this car feels like it's in Bentley Bentayga territory in terms of refinement. Very very happy with the X5.
Just bought this car and after a 600 mile round trip the day after I picked it up I think it's the best car I have ever owned. It's my fourth BMW and I have also had a Disco. The design, build quality, tech and luxury feel are fantastic, but the engine and drive is awesome. I can't believe I averaged 41.5mpg over 600 miles driving 70% motorway and 30% a/b roads. Absolutely love it.
Got my pre face lift X5 30d new in 2019, very similar spec but no frozen paint, £76k list and I got 12% discount! Was going to change it after 4 years but it's still solid as a rock (and the huge price increase on a new like for like) decided to run it forever. 80k miles now and still perfect. Love it

Joe could you do a comparison with the BMW X5 50e plug in hybrid. To me the flexibility of having petrol and electric makes so much sense and considering one as my next family car.
I have 2023 M Sportpack X5 with B57. I generally do not like SUVs (before I had Audi A6) and this is my first one, but as I have 3 kids, need more space in the cabin and we had a great deal from the local dealer on the X5s last year (60k EUR for base X5 3,0d and with M Sportpack around 68k EUR), but after 2-3 months I started to appreciate this car. P.S. You dad is exact copy of you (or vice versa) - just 20+ years older :)
I absolute loved the f15 and even more admire the design changes of the G05 and this in depth review proves it that it is a perfect car. I wish I was able to afford them right now, not sure how long ICE motors will be around and be replaced by EVs but I would love to fully enjoy a diesel SUV before it becomes obsolete.
Thinking of an X3 M40i when I next change my car. But this review...not much better than seeing such a great review and has thrown a long term spanner in the works!
Fantastic video, Joe. Have you thought about reviewing some of the older BMWs that you missed out on when they were new? I think it would be great to hear your thoughts on some of the older second-hand BMWs like the E6X 5 series, the E9X 3 series, the F15 X5 etc., where the cost of everything is going up and a lot of us like to shop around for a second-hand bargain!
I just gave back my x5 45e. Absolutely the best car I ever had. Saying that though, the current pricing of BMW’s meant I couldn’t justify replacing with them. Going to wait a while and see if they come down as I can’t see many people or businesses paying the 1300 a month they wanted haha
I own a 13plate X3 sport 3litre Diesel with 130,000 miles on the clock,it’s without doubt the best car I have ever owned, the power from the engine is unbelievable and sport and sport plus mode turns it into something else,my daughter has a Range Rover Velar with the V6 twin turbo Diesel engine and it can’t live with my X3 in sport plus,my only criticism is it hasn’t got the air suspension which makes the ride a bit firm but other than that it’s brilliant, the fuel consumption around town is about 36mpg but on the motorway at a steady 70mph it’s unbelievable giving around 48/50 mpg. I keep thinking about changing it but cannot bring myself to do it because every time I use it,it seems to drive better the more miles I do in it,my son changes the oil twice a year, every spring and every autumn with 0w40 fully synthetic for the winter, the filter he changes annually,in the spring oil change I use 10w40,BMW recommend 5w30 all year round with the long life oil but being an ex diesel mechanic I prefer to use this combination using cheaper oils of the correct specification which seems to have work well this far, always use fully synthetic though. Regular oil changes are the secret to longevity in Diesel engines and oil is cheap when compared to major component failures, I always let it run on a fast idle when starting in freezing conditions and again before shutting it down to protect the turbo bearings,I never use the stop start function for the same reasons, the money you save on fuel comes nowhere near the price of a turbo plus fitting and VAT.
I've got a 72 plate with 28k on the clock. Just changing the tyres for the first time. I drive all over Europe with it. I've had M's since 2001..but this diesel is glorious
Brilliant review! As a previous owner of a 330d F30 and X5 40d from 2016.. I totally get what you’re saying about the marriage of gearbox and engine.. I’ve mentioned it numerous times to other people that the car always finds itself in the right gear, no matter the situation. Much better than Porsche’s PDK, which often finds itself shifting far too quickly, thus leaving you outside the optimum torque band for effortless overtakes or cruising. Really glad you picked up on that tangible fact and conveyed it!
Having been fitted with the 21-inch alloys, I would have expected the ride comfort to be much worse. I am really surprised. Thanks for the insightful review.
Completely agree, on my second G05 X5, now the LCI, which is practically in an identical spec to this less towbar and individual paint but on 22 inch wheels. Agree with you, best car out there.
As a 2017 cayenne 4.2 tdi v8 owner, I watch content to try and find a replacement.. I haven’t found a better all round suv that can tow 3.5 tonne, has a 100 litre fuel tank, does 30+mpg when needed and 165mph top speed. I just couldn’t justify going to a newer model with less of everything bar “newness”
i have now same engine 2021 g31 and i love it. Yesterday i had 300km trip and i used 13,4l diesel. 210kw on 2,2tons 5-series is impressive. My next car is same x5. New 5series is not my first choice any more.
I’ve had an X5 45e for 15 months or so, and done nearly 20K miles in it. Fabulous car. I don’t think the 50e needs yet another 100bhp, though, and I don’t like the interior changes because more buttons means it’s easier to adjust things like heating on the move etc, therefore more safety. So I’ll only upgrade when I have to. Tax means it has to be a hybrid.
I am thinking of buying a 2023 530d m sport sedan and this great review has confirmed my own observations that BMW has improved the series to well near perfect. While my heart was set on an i4 e35 was a disappointment to drive with non existent steering feel. The 530d had totally superior build and road dynamics. While not directly comparable to the x5 you reviewed the 539d m sport impressed me as the best car I’ve ever driven with no issues. And pricing on the 530d is much better…….. As always great review and pleasing to see the 30d motor and zf transmission scoring a solid 10.
Usual great enthusiastic review Joe. Thank you. X5s are a bit too big; I've got an X3-size which is big enough. Actually it''s a 2019 Alpina XD3; a brand you and I both admire. 350 bhp, 0-62 less than 4.5 secs, 700 nm, 40 mpg. My third Alpina. Superb.
I've recently bought an x3 30d and I can't really fault it. Pano roof is seriously good and harmon kardon sound system is great too. Couldn't find any second hand with adaptive cruise or adaptive suspension both of which would have been nice. Think will get this x5 in a couple of years time with the 30d
Amazing review @JoeAchilles. I just got a 2021 X6 30d M Sport (which is actually the same car with more aggressive coupe looks) specd with extended merino Tartufo leather, panoramic sky lounge sunroof, 21"s, M Sport brakes, M Sports exhaust, M adaptive suspension, and many more extras. The B57 is a torque monster and at the same time so refined and quiet engine. The ZF8 is simply perfect and everyday I am more sure that I made the best option.
I just came out of a 21 X5 40i and i loved it, overall was very happy. Currently have the i5 M60 and i was worried it wont fill in the shoes of happiness. And it did. The smile this car gives u driving Daily is insane. I skip the x5 because i felt like not much changed from LCI. Both cars are great.
That definitely is a brilliant all-rounder Joe! Might sensibly be your next lease, because as you rightly said, it has all the power and performance you need, the economy of diesel being the icing on the cake. Not to mention the comfort. Cheers, Tom
Great review. I have a 2019 with the air suspension and I love it. I've found on previous BMWs that the ride quality on poor roads started to wear on me, but this X5 with the air suspension just handles everything with ease. It's hard to find a major fault with this car....that is until you need to replace the brakes or tires $$$
Hi Joe. I fully agree with you. I have a 2022 G05 m sport 30d. It does everything it says on the tin and more. You’re right up there on mpg and on one run my average was the top end of the forties. Towing is soo effortless. And still around 22 mpg. Can’t fault it. I have the 22” wheels on and the air suspension makes it. Thank you for having the same frame of mind. If any of your subscribers has one please mention how you find it. All the best everyone.
Thank you Joe! Another super pleasant review, agree after testing it the x5 is super agile for an "SUV". just bought a 330d lci thx to your 340d review and absolutely blown away by the torque, chassis, fuel economy and digital capabilities of the car! Shame that we can't source battery raw materials as china does so well to make Germany great again, but those German engineering Fahrzeugen hold the fort!
We should have watch this before ordering the 2025 40i in the states. That air suspension should have been part of our options. Fantastic review. We just departed the 2021.

I’ve got one and despite reference to BMW Munich (six months ago), I still await resolution to reflections from the dash fascia on to the front driver/passenger windows which seriously compromise rear vision on door mirrors.
Not my sort of car and I’m not a fan of the aggressive looks. However whenever I see one I think now that is a well proportioned car. I will be interested to see if you think the 550e helps redeem the 5 series. I think there is a chance the will offer diesels in the touring. It will be interesting to see what they do with Alpina next year.
Great review, great car. Joe, I know you’re a huge bmw fan. The great thing about the M3 is it ticks the practical box so well as well as the fun side of things. I’m sure budgetary constraints and I’m guessing there’s also the fact that with the m3 covering both fun and practical so well, do you see a place for one of these in your garage? I’m guessing as you’ve just updated the m3 wagon, possibly not?
@@JoeAchilles1 yep I think people thought they’d have until 2035 to buy whatever they wanted, but things are being withdrawn from sale much faster than that.
It’s worth buying a big diesel while you can. The mild hybrid, diesel and eight speed auto can’t be matched. BMW must be mad withdrawing them before they have to. I would bet that they would sell huge numbers as “dumb day” approaches in 2035 when we are forced to buy electric. The eco folks might realise electric cars are still cars, they won’t save the planet, so maybe “dumb day” will never arrive.
I drive the X3 30e which I leased just over two years ago. It is astonishingly fast in acceleration, with or without Xtraboost. I did however want this X5 diesel, and the only reason I didn‘t take it is because the German government had a 3700 € subsidy for hybrids at the time, and there is a tax reduction for company cars from the normal 1% of the new price for conventional combustion engines to 0.50% for hybrids, 0.25% for full electric. I’ve always wanted that X5, just wasn’t prepared to pay the government so much tax. I’m English but have been living in Germany since the 90s. The tax laws here are crazy! Even if you buy a used vehicle and bring it onto your company‘s books, the government still charges tax on that vehicles new price.
I've got a G01 2018 X3 30d and even my version of the engine (261bhp/620nm) is such a peach. I hardly use the throttle to accelerate and leave it in comfort mode and D most of the time. It just goes when you need it. Stick it in Sport+ and Sport drive... and hang on! This new X5 looks very impressive with the latest 30d engine, but buying a new one is… ouch! …with those options. I still would though if I could.
Excellent work as usual Joe and you make a hugely compelling argument for this car. In reality, regardless of what car we drive, we are all pretty much going at the same speed, so why not do it in something with enough pace to surprise and enough comfort to be able to get out and walk away from it without making all those awful "Dad" noises muttering about back pain and your hips being made of dust (just me then?).
in ireland the diesel is 40,000 euro more expensive than an equal spec hybrid X5... thanks to the emissions figures and our stupid government VRT Tax... i have a 530d touring. absolutely love it. will be driving it for another while i think. great video joe..
Interesting video as ever Joe. Saw an X5 LCI 50e the other day on the motorway and thought it looked incredible. Would love this X5 to upgrade from my G31 5 series.
I own pre LCI G05 it very similar spec. I can only tell that even on 22 inch wheels this car still remains very comfortable. I only don’t know how you can get to such low fuel consumption. From 30000km my used 9,5 liter/100km.
I am driving 530d Touring mild-hybrid (286 PS) since last 2 years. A great all round car. Many a times I have been tempted to go for an EV, but I postpone my decision. It seems like I will keep this car for few more years. Also I would mention that my car has sun roof, and I cant think of another car without it. I am so used to light & a feeling of openness.

Thanks. Thinking of doing the same. 40i seems fun but may not be practical in traffic
@joe do you prefer the 30d over the 40d? If so, would you share why please.
Thanks a lot!
A 1 year old 530d M sport estate could be had for under 40k...
Very good point.
Fashion has diverted us away from the estate car and into SUVs, hence the price difference.
I drove my 530d from brighton to Liverpool return and still have a third of a tank left. I a not sure why anyone would buy an EV.
In spring, I’m having a 530d M Sport Saloon. As you say, a 1 year old one. Currently drive a 21 plate 320i, which is awesome but can’t wait for a 530d
Are they that cheap in UK?? That would be 50k+ in Germany.
Still got our 2016 X5 30d 7 seater with towbar. 65k miles and don’t think we’ll ever get rid of it.
Great review. I love my X5 M50D and won't be changing it anytime soon.
I don't blame you!
Love it
I’ve done exactly the same. £73k in 2019 plus a discount and same car now £90k so kept mine too. Thanks to flexible working mileage only 55k
I swear I thought I was watching Harry's Garage at the beginning , had to double check !!! And the X5 has probably been one of the best cars ever ever since it was made , YESSSS !!!! I have an X5M and wifey has a 2006 3 liter diesel !!!
Genuinely considering this as my next motor from a 21 X3M due to family life. Looks lovely!
did you lease that?
It's genuinely brilliant!
@@iainfletcher3066no PCP. The performance is mega, lowered it, some AC goodies. Looks lovely in Donington but use it for work, 40k in 3 years and at 18mpg long term not really the right type of car 😂
getting lease rip off
@@Lemingtona-x5g not really. All depends upon affordability. Between PCP payment, fuel, maintenance and usual insurance and tax worked out monthly, works out to be 1350 a month. Each to their own but that doesn’t bother be as I’ didn’t have the 85k to buy it brand new. Who does 🤔
Here in Holland I would 100% opt for the 50e which is €15k less expensive then the 40i and €23k less expensive then the 30d
Definitely worth a test drive, incredible car 👌🏽
Another great review again, couldn’t agree more, had one of these recently as a courtesy car for the day and didn’t want to give it back.
Absolutely brilliant aren't they! 👌🏽
Joe I had the pleasure of driving one the other day and am going for the diesel super car your passion sold it .. ❤
what's your thoughts on the 4.0d compared to this 3.0d?
*The face lift looks good but that price tag is crazy* 😁
I've got a 72 plate with 28k on the clock. Just changing the tyres for the first time. I drive all over Europe with it. I've had M's since 2001..but this diesel is glorious
Hey Joe,happy to see you are healthy again.Great review, such a classy drive
Brilliant review! As a previous owner of a 330d F30 and X5 40d from 2016.. I totally get what you’re saying about the marriage of gearbox and engine.. I’ve mentioned it numerous times to other people that the car always finds itself in the right gear, no matter the situation. Much better than Porsche’s PDK, which often finds itself shifting far too quickly, thus leaving you outside the optimum torque band for effortless overtakes or cruising. Really glad you picked up on that tangible fact and conveyed it!
I have the X5 40d and it is simply amazing. Smooth when cruising but very quick and agile when getting onto the country roads.
Brilliant video, I am brilliantly once again browsing for this X5 ❤
Cheers!
Oh, it's Mega!
Having been fitted with the 21-inch alloys, I would have expected the ride comfort to be much worse. I am really surprised. Thanks for the insightful review.
It looks so good. Perfect car. This car i really want
Completely agree, on my second G05 X5, now the LCI, which is practically in an identical spec to this less towbar and individual paint but on 22 inch wheels. Agree with you, best car out there.
Brilliant car, brilliant review Joe and it's equally brilliant to see a manufacturer holding onto diesel engines and not any diesel! the mighty BM i6d
You already own one of the best cars ever made! I would do anything for a Panamera 4S diesel…
Would you say X6 is better than X5 for driving experience?
i have now same engine 2021 g31 and i love it. Yesterday i had 300km trip and i used 13,4l diesel. 210kw on 2,2tons 5-series is impressive. My next car is same x5. New 5series is not my first
choice any more.
"Brilliant" video buddy❤
Thank you!
Great car, great review. Picked up my X5 M60i 3 months ago. Not the cheapest, but my O my, What a vehicle! Best all round BMW imo.
Hi Joe. I fully agree with you. I have a
2022 G05 m sport 30d.
Also, you’re missing quite a few packages. Such as the Bowers and Wilkins audio system, rear wheel steering with anti roll bar, tow bar
We should have watch this before ordering the 2025 40i in the states. That air suspension should have been part of our options. Fantastic review. We just departed the 2021.
Great car i had last 2x generations x5s all in 30d all faultless but last year change to x3 m40i great car as well b58 masterpiece engine but much less quality build so ended up selling x3 and buy GO5 X5 30d again in high spec 😊😊
I’ve got one and despite reference to BMW Munich (six months ago), I still await resolution to reflections from the dash fascia on to the front driver/passenger windows which seriously compromise rear vision on door mirrors.
Awesome video, Joe. I love your honesty and thorough analysis.
Great video and stunning car. I have the X3 M40d and similar adoration for the qualities of it. Might test drive one of these...
Excellent review like always. You convinced me about the new BMW X5. Thank you.
Impressive!
Would love to have seen the interior roof lit up.
Great video - had an X5d about 7 years ago and loved it then, this one sounds amazing - thought it sounded like the v8 petrol.
I think you’re right, possible the best all round car on sale today. I also LOVE how good it sounds considering!
@Joe Achilles
Need an X7 40d video review next
Yes Joe please review X7 40d. It is incredible car
Joe, what's your opinion on 30d vs the petrol version ?
Diff in drive dynamics, feel, insulation, efficiency et al.. !..!?
I have the X3 with the 30d, its a beauty
Great review, great car. Joe, I know you’re a huge bmw fan. The great thing about the M3 is it ticks the practical box so well as well as the fun side of things. I’m sure budgetary constraints and I’m guessing there’s also the fact that with the m3 covering both fun and practical so well, do you see a place for one of these in your garage? I’m guessing as you’ve just updated the m3 wagon, possibly not?
Seeing how all 5 series diesels are no longer available in the U.K., you’d have to wonder how long this 30d will be on sale for.
I'm guessing it won't be long unfortunately.... Sad times when the 30/40d get axed completely.
@@JoeAchilles1 yep I think people thought they’d have until 2035 to buy whatever they wanted, but things are being withdrawn from sale much faster than that.
Also the X3 is in fact the same size as the first gen X5, so the X3 is probably large enough for a lot of people.
Test the 50e Joe, it looks like the best of this range
Hi Joe nice revew! I noticed the new curved screen moving while you are driving, is that noticeable while driving??
fantastic BMW
Wayne
@Joe, between BMW X5 xDrive30d 2024 model and BMW 740d xDrive 2024 model which would be better choice?
Interesting video as ever Joe. Saw an X5 LCI 50e the other day on the motorway and thought it looked incredible. Would love this X5 to upgrade from my G31 5 series.
My Range Rover Sport was stolen a year ago and I replaced it with an X5 30d. The thieves did me a favour as I love my X5 an amazing all round car.
I saw a brand new (24 reg) X5 40d last week on trade plates heading to Berry Chiswick. It looked amazing 🤩
I own pre LCI G05 it very similar spec. I can only tell that even on 22 inch wheels this car still remains very comfortable. I only don’t know how you can get to such low fuel consumption. From 30000km my used 9,5 liter/100km.
Great to see you doing reviews again Joe. I remember when you did the X5 back in 2018, you made me want it so badly haha
hello Joe. A question. do you have a same opinion on X6? Thanks for answering.
Love the vid as always Joe.
Thank you Joe you answered my question what a car
Superb review! Thank you Joe
Great video Joe. I know well how good these cars are as I have had 4×bmw X5 30d the last being the GO5. It does everything amazingly well, that's why what else do you buy to replace it ?? I really wanted a change but for what? Well since all the children are all.out of child seats now I went back to my first love of car cars and have got a G80 M3 competition( which I sent you a photo of) Think I want one of each now!!!
Hi Joe loved your content on the new BMW X5 diesel. I’ve flowed your channel for a while I notice that most of your videos are BMW Cars would you consider doing a comparison with X5 diesel against the new Volkswagen Touareg Diesel.
Thanks again Gus
Nice video! Love the diesels.. im struggling so hard to choose my next engine.
I have a 330d stage 2 now and its an absolute dream to drive.
Im looking for an X5 now, 2 kids etc etc.
Would you prefer the X5 40d over the 30d?
I love the G05 generation X5. My M50i is SO good.
Great review, could you also review the x5 50e PHEV?
Who is watching this review in full for the 5th time like me?
I was till I bought one. Just love it
@@rossdrayton5476hi ! Would you recommend it over the 50e plug in ?
Random question, what phone mount is that? It looks great.
