    At the start of this video, I said to myself, "Just slip it! What's the big deal?" As the old Utah teams have shown us: All of the PNR coverages have weaknesses.

    Stan Van Gundy is a defensive guru. Didnt Orlando play the same type of defense with Rashard Lewis and Dwight in the frontcourt? They also had Pietrus , courtney lee great defensive players

      I loved his offense, when he used Howard to screen, the D hedged, and Howard got deep post position.
      He was deadly.

      tteverywhere 97 thy had the best defense for a couple of years. Phenomonal shooting from C.Lee , redick, Jameer Pietrus , Turkgolu, Rashard etc. they got annihilated in the finals though lol

      To be honest, "annihilated" isn't a word to describe it. They lost G1 or G2 cause Lee missed an alley oop which was an easy layup. Then, they lost G4 iirc cause they didn't foul when they were +3. I mean, they lost 4-1 but they had two (very) close games.

      Àhmed El Jaiedi i remember Game 2 courtney Lee was wide open and choked that layup SMH . N Jameer Nelson dumbass fouled Derek Fisher at the 3 pt line with like 4 sec left

    Yo coach... would Carmelo be more suitable to the offense if they use him for offensive pick & roll and double team on the pick & roll opponents pick & roll? I️ see the offense is suffering because you have 3 stars all wanting to touch the ball and I️ feel the coaching staff isn’t utilizing them effectively as they initially should.

      Dedrick Stansbury Melo got used to the Iso plays back in his prime days so i don't think he'll sacrifice his performance for a change of play yet.

    • @NotOneToFly
      @NotOneToFly 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      He hasn't done it so far this year but I wouldn't be surprised if Donovan finally forces some more interesting looks out of his offense. Melo/Adams pick and roll with Westbrook cutting could be deadly, as could Melo/George pick and roll/pick and pop. He just let's Westbrook hold the ball too much during crunch time and doesn't ask for the kind of off ball movement that would make them dangerous.
      To Melo's credit, in the last couple games he's been talking fewer shots and playing more efficiently. It's all up to Russ and Donovan now.

  • @zacharyseay6619

    Couldn't you also slip the screen and have the big set an off ball screen to counter the hard hedge too? Like in that Knicks play at 3:05 you could have Porzingis slip and screen for Hardaway and have him flare or curl

  • @OneHandClap

    excellent video, coach. i bet curry and draymond will handle this fine on friday with a quick double assist since draymond is alert enough to decide between the lob (to javale or bell) and the perimeter shooter (klay, etc)

      Yeh they would do their famous high pick-slip similar to what the pacers did

  • @11Liammcguirk
    @11Liammcguirk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The real problem in many of these situations is how stagnant the off ball offensive players are when the pick and roll is played. All they need to do is simply leave the corner and create a passing lane on the opposite side of the court's 3 point line (at the elbow). Two quick passes in order to triangulate the ball to the roll man and this defense is dead. Great example here: th-cam.com/video/TGcSvK6DkLo/w-d-xo.html

    Hey Coach, the bucks do the same, just on every pick. I think that’s why they are not successful defensively. Could you compare their defensive strategies to the pistons?

    • @coachdaniel8163
      @coachdaniel8163  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Bucks aggressive P&R defense is not the same hard hedge the Pistons use. They just bring the big up quite high to slide with the offensive guard. I probably won't make a vid on that but I will say I'm not a fan of the Bucks defense and how they execute vs different teams.

      It's harder to do now when the pace of the game is much higher, bigs can get fatigued easily

  • @alegrugeyo

    I think this defensive strategy is great, but it should be adjusted for teams that have great point guards that are able to make those adjustments especially when the big recognizes the tactic. This should not be a be all end all strategy, although it works against most teams.

  • @forfucksakecomrade
    @forfucksakecomrade 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I much prefer aggressive hard hedging to switching when a team isn't able to switch bigs and smalls. Even the Warriors have done this against the Cavs when Curry's man tries to set a pick for LeBron and force Curry to switch on LeBron for a mismatch (this is what the Cavs were abusing in 2016). Nowadays Curry runs out high on such plays and stops the ball, then runs back to his man (the screener)

    • @ReCharredSigh
      @ReCharredSigh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      hard hedging works when the point guard is the roll man, because they are much more faster and agile than the typical big man. that is why steph was able to get out and show really far, but still be able to get back to his man. if you ask your typical slow big man to run out, show hard, and still get back, 95% of the league’s players wouldn’t be able to do it.
      to see an example of how bad hard hedging can get, look at how the bucks, even though they are long and athletic, constantly either hard hedge or trap, and it causes their defense to consistently break down.

    Melo is perfect to attack the hard edge as his weakness (refusing contact, never setting a real tough screen) is turning into an opportunity.

    #1 weakness of Switching Man-to-Man Defense = point guard dropping to the front of the Rim. 😞😞😞
    Majority of teams are too small for that = a 6'3 or shorter point guard trying to defend a Center or Power Forward at close-range against Lob Dunks.
    Very few teams have a 6'6 point guard like Lonzo Ball = 3rd Rim Protector, instead of staying outside to prevent 3-pointers.

    Nice video coach but I'm sure you can garner more views if you take the quality of editing up a notch. I'm talking about the font and how the text is presented, like attention to detail has some nice fonts that make the video look rich. But looks aside the video was very insightful and involving!

    The key to the slip is for the wing player to relocate down to the corner. Beasley had the right idea, but the guard was lost. Nobody gets it in the paint moving toward the goal and tries to throw it backwards.

    Was the last way of attacking this similar to the Spain concept?

    • @redhotfreak94
      @redhotfreak94 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the spain concept is setting a screen for the ballscreener on the roll after the ballscreen, while here the screener gets a screen before setting the actual ballscreen to get the screeners defender out of position to hedge.

      then that's a really bad hedge

    • @coachdaniel8163
      @coachdaniel8163  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Amazing question. I didn't see any ball handler split this vs DET, though I'm sure its happened this season. It's hard to split unless the screener sets a really good screen or the hedger is late or hedges too far from the screener.When it does happen, the offense has the clear advantage and will likely get a good shot. It would be a 4 on 3 for the O.
