Have camped in the Tankwa several years ago. Agree about the desolate beauty. Have also camped in central and west Australia, which exceeds Tankwa in its remote vastness and beauty by a factor of about a million!
Climate changes often over long periods of time but mostly likely there has been quite a bit of change relatively recently as massive herds of hundreds of thousands grazing animals were reported in the hinterland. That amout of biomass being put into the soil would have created great conditions for plants to grow, plants change the local weather believe it or not so you can see how SA was much less barren before as it is now

Is that ground water? Or where does river come from ?
Not sure about the origin of the river, but it makes part (or joins) to the greater Doring river system if I’m not mistaken
