As others have mentioned, this is, and always will be, an Eric Carmen song. It infuriates us when people hear it and say "Oh, that's a Celine Dion song." Yes, she covered it, but Eric wrote it, did it first, and to many of us, did it the best. The piano part alone is amazing.

It's 10.30pm Tuesday night 12/03/2024 and I've just flicked the T.V. over to Ch 9 in Sydney.
They were showing The Raspberries "Go all the Way"
I thought "Why are they playing that?" "Is Eric touring soon?"
Then I thought "Oh no he hasn't died" "Has he?"
My fears were confirmed by the news voice over person.
    "Eric Carmen was 74"
    Now I can't stop crying.
Not only did Eric help create one of the greatest, mind blowing Guitar riffs in Rock history, he then composed some of the most tasteful Ballads of all time.
Good quality Ballads are extremely hard to write.
Thanks for the great music and the brilliant singing voice Eric.
Eric lived a successful existence and died peacefully in his sleep.
    "Come on Baby!!!"
    RIP - Eric Carmen

I've always wondered why people call this Celine Dion's song. To me it forever will be Eric's song. In his hands it's such an intimate statement of aloneness. His piano playing added to the pathos of it, not that Rachmaninoff's composition didn't start it off with plenty. Later versions eliminated the source material, which I consider a major mistake rooted in arrogance. Did they think they could improve on Rachmaninoff? This isn't a version, this is the original, the foundation. Everyone else is a johnny-come-lately.

""All by Myself" is a song by American singer-songwriter Eric Carmen released in 1975. The verse is based on the second movement () of Sergei Rachmaninoff's circa 1900-1901 , Opus 18. The chorus was taken from the song "Let's Pretend", which Carmen wrote and recorded with the Raspberries in 1972. The slide guitar solo was performed by studio guitarist Hugh McCracken.

Eric Carmen wrote this song that was released in 1975. If you grew up listening to the original like me from age 11, no one does it better. I think Celine has a great voice and her cover is better than others, but does not surpass the real deal. I heard her music producer, David Foster, came up with the idea for Celine to sing the chorus in a higher key towards the end for more drama. Now if I had never heard the original consistently over the years, I would probably really like Celine's cover, because it just a great song. Thanks Eric Carmen, good to know you are still writing at age 72!

6:05 it is indeed beautiful. It is taken directly from the second movement of Rachmaninoff's piano concerto No. 2. Listen to that sometime. In my opinion, it is the most beautiful piece of music ever written. Carmen is a classically trained pianist, and has great respect for Rachmaninoff's work. When Carmen wrote this song, he didn't realize the piano concerto was not in the public domain. The Rachmaninoff Estate quickly let him know he was incorrect on that point. $$$

Written by Eric Carmen. The music is based on a composition written by the late Sergei Rachmaninoff, a classical pianist and composer.
Covers. Celine Dion has the most popular one. Morissette Amon, Julie Anne San Jose, Peter Rosalita; and Pia Toscano covered this too.

HarriBest, I would like you to react to "Let's Pretend".......by The Raspberries (Eric Carmen was lead Singer) Incredible Drums, fantastic Raspberries harmony, and Eric belts it out the way he is so capable of doing. For those who have not heard this song on a good system, check it out.....AM radio did not do it justice!
I look forward to your reaction to this song. Eric Carmen and the Raspberries were great.

I don't remember this being this long. I don't think this is the radio version but that extended classical part in the middle was beautiful.

I know, right!?! I’d listened to this song for twenty years. Got turned into a classical music fan due to the Rachmaninoff influence. But only happened upon the longer version by chance a year or two ago while venturing down a very deep TH-cam rabbit hole one night. I love love love TH-cam rabbit holes. Those algorithms can really do some good too sometimes.

You almost called it--not Tchaikovsky, but another Russian composer--Rachmaninoff. The root of this melody is by Racnmaninoff. Eric Carmen made it into a gorgeous song in the 70's. He used Rachmanninoff again with his song "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again" that he did with a group he played with called the Raspberries. He indeed is a great pianist.

Actually, Never Gonna Fall in Love Again is also part of his solo repertoire, not Raspberries. It was off the same first album as All By Myself.

This was one of Eric's first hits after his group, The Raspberries, broke up. I bought this album because I was a big Raspberries fan but discovered that this was a really great album. The whole album is good, but no one back then (1977) had any idea, including Eric, just how big this song would become years later. Eric Carmen has always been grateful that other artists covered his songs. When Celine Dion recorded this song, he made enough money from song writing royalties to buy his house.

That’s the long version which you don’t hear very often. Based on the second movement (Adagio sostenuto) of Sergei Rachmaninoff's circa 1900-1901 Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Opus 18.

Length 7:10 (album version) 4:22 (single edit)
According to Carmen, he first wrote the solo part of the song, writing four bars at a time, eventually completed the interlude after two months.[7] He needed to put this into a song, and after listening to Rachmaninoff's 2nd piano concerto, a piece famously used to underscore the 1945 British film Brief Encounter, he adapted the melody of its second movement to write the verse.[7] Rachmaninoff's music was in the public domain in the United States at that time, so Carmen thought no copyright existed on it, but it was still protected outside the U.S. subsequent to the release of the album. He was later contacted by the Rachmaninoff estate and informed that it was protected.[8] An agreement was reached in which the estate would receive 12 percent of the royalties from "All by Myself" as well as from "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again", which was based on the third movement from Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2.[9][10]
Carmen has stated that he also incorporated part of another melody into this song. The melody of the chorus was taken from his previous hit with the Raspberries, "Let's Pretend".[7]

Love Eric Carmen, he's been around for quite some time. In the early 70's, he was with the Raspberries and their hit "Go All The Way" was huge, you should check it out. I believe he wrote this song in the 80's and it's the original, I haven't even heard Celine Dion sing it.
