I'm 49 years old and my dad had every single Billy Joel album so I was raised on his music and I have a very deep love for him. He doesn't have a bad song.
Harri, the drummer is Liberty DeVitto. He was Billy's studio and touring drummer from 1976-2006. Liberty always has been maniacal behind the kit. On another note, if this clip was from Wembley in 1984, Liberty's second child (daughter Torrey Joel DeVitto, who is an actress, born June 8, 1984) was on her way; supposedly, during a 1984 Wembley show (I don't know if there was more than one), Billy announced the impending birth right before performing "The Longest Time".
Billy crushed his left thumb in a motorcycle accident in 1982. He has no bone from the knuckle to the tip. I think he used the tape for extra support when he played back then. Thanks for the great reaction Harri.
Just a great Billy Joel song. Done live, 🎶🎶🎶 just masterful. Peter Cetera and Donnie Dacus from Chicago sang backing vocals on this record. A tune with lyrics that have applied to our own life situations occasionally. The band rounding out a great rocking tune. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Jami. Outstanding live performance. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
The theme song to Tom Hanks' first major acting gig: a sitcom called Bosom Buddies that ran from 1980-1982. Worth a watch. Great cast. I don't think he wrote it for the show, but they used it.
Yes, I believe it was a cover version. In college we watched the show with absolutely no clue Hanks would become a major star and force in the movie biz.
My boys were raised to Glass Houses. They still know every word. He was 1st rock artist invited to play in ussr, in 87, before ussr fell. Try to view some live songs from that concert. Watch "The Longest Time" " You May Be Right" etc.
Thats Liberty DeVito on drums, just being Liberty! He always plays like that. I miss him in the band. And thats Marc Riviera on horns, another great talent. He's still in the band.
I was at that concert which was shown live on TV at the time. It was my first time to see Billy live, it was brilliant and I've been lucky enough to see him another 10 times since.
I've never seen this performance! Now I have to go look up more clips from his Wembley shows. Re: the bandage on his thumb, he injured it in a motorcycle accident in the early '80s, and the tip of the bone was permanently damaged. So he kept it wrapped up to keep the whole thing stable, because he does pound on the keyboard!
Love this song. There are still a few times I want to sing these lyrics to a few folks. I don’t care what you say. This is my life. Go ahead with own life and leave me alone!
This song was my anthem! I played it and sang it over and over getting enough courage to leave my abuse ex-husband. Great request Jami. What a great analysis and reaction Harri!
huge billy fan, he couldnt sing off key if he wanted too I dont see an ear plugs what does that tell ya? just a multi talented man !! all the gifts ! and we are here for them ! CHEERS!
So perfect - as good or better than the recording. This is what music should be: a band member writes the music and everyone plays without electronic trickery/editing.
This song about asserting your independence was the theme to the 1980 television sitcom Bosom Buddies - the one that introduced many of us to Tom Hanks. However, because of licensing issues, the title theme was not Joel's version and was sung by a soundalike singer. Allegedly, the verse "closed the shop, sold the house, bought a ticket to the west coast; now he gives them a stand up routine in LA" refers to comedian Richard Lewis. Lewis is indeed native to Joel's stomping ground, born in New York City and raised in New Jersey.
@@thatrobguy And for whatever it's worth, I knew Lewis. He didn't; have a shop to close, or a house to sell. He was barely getting by on standup and part-time work.
4:52 sometimes Billy will improvise on a song to change it up a bit from the studio recording, so I think where he holds up three fingers it is to signal that he will be singing: 'Don't-don't-don't get me wrong' Whereas the studio recording just says: 'Don't get me wrong'.
In primary school, a classmate of mine, (not grasping sarcasm yet) misunderstood me when I said, "Yeah, and Billy Joel is my uncle". I meant it as a statement like yeah, when pigs fly, or that'll be the day. Instead, he spread the rumor until I was chastised for spreading lies. Billy was in my top 5 as a child. (Beatles, Queen, Foghat, Temptations, and Ronnie and the Ronnettes). I grew up in the 70s and 80s (the best time for rock music 1968-1976)
I am so enjoying this journey through Billy’s amazing catalogue. And there is so much more after you get past his most popular songs! He just redefines “genius”. I love watching Harri and hearing his take on the material. A great big thanks to Jami A for these wonderful requests ❤️. Happy New Year to the besties I have met here on the greatest TH-cam channel. 🌺✌️
You're not the only reactions channel I listen to but I love your unexpected selections; Moody Blues, Billy Joel, and others that other channels don't do.
In 1982 he had a motorcycle accident and he injured both hands, he broken his fingers and lost the bone on the left thumb, I think he had like some implant or metal wire in the thumb, because until late 1987 he used that plaster on his thumb. Also he changed his piano playing way.
Leave a tender moment alone live con Tootsie Thielemans è tra le migliori cos'è mai viste .... Piano Man ha tutti gioielli nel repertorio.. Talento universale
First hit I remember of him after Piano Man. It was all over the radio. This is a much fancier combo than when I saw him a few years later; it was a quartet I think.
At the impressionable age of 62 and having never , been married 🙃 I identified as someone coming of age.... anti-authoritarian ... I don't need you to worry about me... 🎶💃 Love and Light Harri 🌙🐂🪐
So glad you reacted to this Billy Joel tune!! I love his music; but this one is top of the list for me. It was my "divorce song." Even my daughter knows all the words and sings it with me when it happens to come on, As an aside, I am still friends w/her dad and we talk frequently . . . but, on MY time!!
You're watching the Gershwin of his era, except he also sang very well. This was released in 1978 / a hit in early 1979. #3 on USA billboard. this song sort of represents my last year in college as I moved out of my parents house and lived across town in East Lansing MI at Michigan State University, majoring in Music Education.

The drummer, Liberty DeVitto, absolutely HATED playing this particular song, as he's stated many times, even though he actually came up with a line for lyrics ("Either way it's okay you wake up with yourself" was Liberty's line). He always smashed the heck out of the drums, but particularly on this one, partly in protest. Also his baby was born during this show.

Liberty on Songs in The Attic. Miami 2017 :)
0:42 as the camera zooms in on Liberty's drum kit it says happy birthday Torrey.
Played a lot with Meat Loaf too

I've seen him live 8 times, just saw him in July as his voice is STILL amazing my 19 year old son absolutely loved it!
My favorite Billy Joel song!!!!!
Love it, love it. Seen him many times all over. Roll on Hyde Park, London in July
Billy is an amazingly talented musician, and quite the wordsmith. Thanks for the memories Harri.
I've seen Billy live 4 times and he is one of the best live performers of all time. Loved his music for over 40 years

One of his early hits, loved it
This one has always been special to me by this legend.
He is amazing live. Being there and watching him pound the piano gave me chills 😍 Sooooo good!
He still jams out every month at Madison Square Garden even at 73 years old. Hope he plays forever
The Stranger (1977) and 52nd Street (1978), exceptional albums.
This live version simply rocks! Billy and the band are on point!!

Able to exactly replicate his album sound live if desired. Band was tight, and his voice even while playing was like listening to him on the radio
This song was the Theme song for early 80’s sitcom Bossom Buddies... one of Tom Hanks first roles

The Richard Lewis thing is an urban legend. It’s one I repeated for years myself before someone finally asked Billy about it and he flatly denied.

Great stuff, indeed! This is one of those songs that starts out good and keeps getting better in the performance.

Overkill on the drums.....I agree! Like a guitar player that makes the "I'm in pain" look when he solo's!

My favorite song of his - especially the live version on the expanded edition of The Stranger.
Harri please play Ballad of Billy the kid.

Hardly ever a good reason to hear a song from a live version the first time, especially years after it was recorded. Yuck.
