Today at Speedy's Garage see how to install a lift kit on a 3rd gen 4Runner using Tundra TRD Coils in the front with Bilstein 5100 shocks and OME 906 coils in the rear with 5100 shocks. Before and after measurements shown. Ride is better than stock in that it is not only smoother and more compliant, but the vehicle has a meaner look to boot 😎
Finally!! A video that skips the b.s talk and music and shows you step by step instructions and detail. Great video
LOL, my channel has a bit of both to try to have something for everybody. I plan to keep the mix with some "chat" and a lot of "how to".
People don't ruin your ride,do you see that axle and ball joints angle ,really bad ,I used to do this to my trucks, not anymore more it changes how factory ride is supposed to be,stay away from leveling kits
absolutely amazing video. You explained WHY you did everything, instead of just showing what to do, which made it much easier to understand. As of right now, you're on of my favorite guys on youtube. diffidently subscribing.
Couldn't of said it better
This is one of the best install vids on youtube. Super detailed review, so detailed I'm doing my rig while watching.
Great Job !
Thanks for posting this awesome vid. It was very helpful when I did this lift on my wife's 01. However I thought I'd give everyone a heads up with the rear shocks. If you order the bilstein part number from anywhere but wheelers off-road you will NOT be able to install them on your 4Runner due to the fact that the bushings that attach to the rear axle are the wrong size.
Wheelers off-road takes the 5100 shock and presses different bushings in to accommodate the 4Runner. The only reason i know this is because I found a killer deal on the 5100's from a different site and was bummed out when I thought I ordered the wrong shocks. I had the idea to give the folks at wheeler a call and they explained that I did actually have the right parts but they simply put in different bushings in them. They had the proper bushings in stock and shipped them to me. Now it's all good! Just order the rears from wheelers, guys!
Thanks speedy for this tutorial. It was well done as are all your vids. Keep me comin!
I did the same as you did and end up have local shop to press out the busing and replace with a correct one for 4runner.
Will all that fit on a 1997 2wd 4runner?!?!
@@williamjerry & @stephen what is the part number for this bushing??
This seems like the best lift for my 4runner. Cheapest too. Exactly what i wanted. Highway comfort with slightly better clearance for offroading.
Thanks for taking the time to video this, it is appreciated. I've done lifts on vehicles before but it's been a while, this was a nice refresher before I got into it.
Dude that is a sharp 3rd gen.
gen3 will never die

Very nice instructional video... Thank you! A couple of notes: The top stem sockets, at least on mine, were a 5mm allen wrench instead of the 3/16" as you mentioned. The top bushings WILL allow shock-stem rub against the chassis mounting hole because Billstein was TOO cheap to provide the correct bushings. The installer can either buy a very short nylon bushing to slip over the shock stem to ride between these Billstein bushings, or re-use the old bushings from the old shock.
thanks so much for making this video! still relevant in 2019. I had the bottle jack pop out twice on me while under load, but with the proper blocks in place and eventually the impact-driver extension, it really was not very violent... just more of a surprise. also helped to generally avoid putting any body parts in the line of fire. anyway, this is a fantastic walk through. I owe you a beer, sir.
This is the ONLY good video in 3rd gen lift. Thank you
Excellent! Your tips and explanations are well thought out! Your video shots give us a front row seat on "how to" do it! Plenty of light to see! Your attention to detail in your remarks about shock model numbers etc. gives you an A+ ! The advice on safety is something I will utilize and take heed! Nice, by far one of the best top videos! I have been working on cars for 50 years, video production for 25 years and your combination of the two is superior! Congratulations! I would like to see a video on a Gen 5 Toyota 4Runner as this is my next project installing a 3" inch OME LIFT! I will take your advice and concepts and apply it to my project! I subscribed to your channel, something I rarely do! Very professional presentation! Kudos!!
Get Up & Go Now - I totally agree. The VIDEO is well done. Sound, camera, light, sound ... 94 4Runner now
I wish my 3rd gen had no rust like this. added about 5 hours of pain to doing my lift.
Wassup brotha just got my ome front springs, is there a side preference on them they look exactly the same 🤔
@@drunkenmunky2131 what does ome stand for?

Your video helped accelerated my install. Appreciate the details and effort you into this video.
I can’t believe i used to watch this video and freaking out if I can Do it myself. Last week i went and converted my automatic hubs to manual on this 4runner😂
Hey man, thanks for the video and detailed how-to of it. I just finished the lift on my 4Runner going by this video. Also got the parts from Wheelers. Appreciate you taking the time to put this video together
Seth Dunn have a link to the parts??
Just did this to my 1999 limited and it rides like a dream.
Awesome! viewed this before i replaced all shocks and springs on my 2002 4runner. Getting to rear shock/top nut was a challenge but all in 2 hours for back spring and shocks. 3 hours for front
Thanks to this video I completed the lift and had no issues. Using the bottle jack upside down was very easy. Just make sure it's in good. Most of my bolts needed the sawzall, but after that it was easy.
Excellent thorough video. I like that you give reminders on washer orientation, reattaching the e-brake cable and brake line on the pumpkin (even the spare!)
Much appreciated!
Thnx for sharing. Doing a 2” lift on my first gen sequoia this week. This was quite helpful.
Thank you. This is the exact video I needed. I truly appreciate the meticulous attention to detail.
Glad it was helpful!
22:00 For anyone else installing coils up front, while you have them compressed and before securing the top mount, you have to get the alignment correct between the top 3 nuts and the end of the bottom of the coil spring. The bottom coil spring end must be facing the outside and point down the long axis of the vehicle. Passenger spring end points directly to the rear, driver side to the front. This will keep the spring from being too close to the upper ball joint mount. (Toyota FSM) Great video.
This was the best install video. Ive nvr said this before about any other youtube video but this was on par with a chrisfix video no doubt
Don't even need to see another video. Subscribed after this one alone. Great explanations!!
I performed the same installation on m 2002. I am happy with the results. Rides better than stock. Brakes are next.
This is a great step-by-step on how to do this. I mostly want a better ride quality and maybe 1” max of lift, so I think I’ll do this but compress the front spring more than you did. Not sure how I’m going to do the back, but might use the same springs you did and accept the 2” of lift.
Doing my truck now. Ordered my 5100's from Tire Rack. Bushings with them are the correct ones.
Thank you for a straight forward easy to understand video on these installs. Well done.
Thanks for the bottle jack recommendation to remove/install front shocks easier. I'm sure you saved me a bunch of frustration!
Awesome video! Im looking to replace the spacer lift the prev owner put on my 99 4runner. Def will go with Bilstein OME setup
Thank you so much for this I got a 3rd gen to and needed some advice because I want to do a lift. Thank you so much🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏 you should do more 4Runner mod videos.
Super clean car! I'm in the market for a 3rd gen T4R and I've bookmarked your site and vids!! Thanks for taking the time to make high quality, and easy to follow DIY's.
Dude you explain things really well. Your an awesome teacher.
Old Man Emu sell a rubber bung that allows you to use a whole saw above the rear shocks and drill a hole to get to the shock top bolts.
Did not know they had this as an option ...THE most frustrating part of the job was the top nuts on the rear shocks. Still having nightmares....12 months later.
Super helpful. I have an FJ Cruiser and plan to put on some Bilstein 5100's. I know it's not the same car but totally good to know the basics on how to assemble these bad boys.
I don't even own a car but I LOVE your channel anyway. OCD to the max:) that's a rust free truck btw
i used your spring recommendation but used 6100 shocks, love em
Speedy you are a admiration! I have all exact parts on there way and we are now on mid Oct 2017. Still inspiring!
Loosening the lower A arm bolt allow it to move freely instead of hanging up like it does, you can also loosen upper if you wanted to also. Allows for a much easier install
That would also remove the pre-tension on the rubber mounts, wouldn't it?
Hi man, great job on swapping out those suspension parts, but a good idea to loosen or lube rubber parts would be using some silicone spray on those parts, they get off soo much easier, also about the spring compressor.. You always wanna use it while having the strut mounted securely on a vise, if the compressor slips by accident it can kill you or do some serious injuries and never touch the springs while compressed with your hands!. Great work man!.
I like all your safety protocols!
Great video! , wish I came across it 6 years ago.
In that time frame I added 1” spacer to front stock spring & upgraded rear springs to moog eliminating 96 sag with 1.5” spacer & upgraded shocks.
Combo provided comfy ride, looked good many compliments received
In the Last year I’ve noticed rear sag taking place , nothing major but sits slightly lower then front & it bugs me.
Adding 2906 springs minus rear spacers might be the fix
UPDATE:
Put measuring tape on my 96 limited setup finding odd results.
Front 22” & Rear 22.5.
22” up front is very puzzling to me seeing I only added 1” spacer.
Maybe new struts had higher ring then stocks ,
I’m really not freaking sure seeing install took place @ night low light , I was just throwing it together.
Anyway , mid grade off brand struts gave me extra 1.5” on top of 1” spacer = 2.5” front lift.
Rear spacer upgrade from 1.5 to 2” should provide results I seek.
Or
809 coil with 1” spacer with unknown outcome 3” - 3.5...
Thank You Speedy Like Many others here that have watched, made my install go seamless, thanks again
Geeze man this was so helpful. Thank you for making such a great video.
you always post the most detailed and comprehensive videos, thank you. and sweeeeet rig
Thank you! This video was very educational and encouraging. Great work! Love those wheels and suspension upgrades.
I appreciate the conciseness of the video! Thanks man! You've got a new sub!
Excellent video, well organized and helpful. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
We just got a 3rd Gen 4runner. With our 1st Gen Tacoma, we now have a matched set. =D
You did almost exactly what I plan to do with ours. I want to go with the same tire size, but I want to go up about 2.5" instead. I'm probably going to use the OME 881 springs off my Tacoma over a set of 5100s. I'll be going up to 883s on the Taco and replacing the OME Nitrochargers with a set of 5100s. For the back of the 4r, I'm going to try to go with a set of 5125s. Just put a set of those on the back of the Taco and they ride much better than the old OME Nitrochargers.
Love your content would enjoy seeing more toyota stuff nice work. I'm doing a valve cover and 3" susp lift on my 02 right now... I'm wishing it had the engine bay your did 😄
You make it seem so easy... I have a 2000 4Runner.. I've been wanting to do this as well... perhaps one day.. good video.!!!
to push the assembly down, i used a ratchet strap to haul down the top a-arm down.
Excellent suggestion.
Bro, I want to thank you I watch your video religiously only because I want to memorized the parts and I ran down the numbers online. The only thing I cannot find is the springs the front springs. I don’t want an aggressive lift to. I just want something simple if you can, please provide the part number also for the top part with a Springs go those to Monroe rubber things I would greatly appreciate it by the way, sweet looking vehicle love the Trd rules as well. I don’t know what style of those, but they are sure bad ass.
Thanks! All the P/Ns are in the video description I believe.
@@SpeedysGarage I see thx bro 😎
very nice video sir! Because it's so thorough, hands on, and informative.
Thank you for making this video! I'll be using it to do my lift this week
I have to say, this was an awesome job on the install and very informative! Thank you speedy! i will be subscribing to your channel just from this video. I am installing a rear lift in my 5th gen 4runner, (2015) next weekend after my H.A.M. hunt. New SAW coil springs and 5100 series shocks, (already installed new adjustable front coils from Toytech in the front). i just got a new Gopro camera for Xmas so i might do a small video on how to do it on a 5th gen after watching your video. again, really great job and hope your 4 runner is still running strong. Gotta love the 4 runners!!!
I was genuinely surprised you don’t have to take off the sway bar end off, or the upper ball joints. I’ve done leveling kits and lifts on GM, Ford and Dodges and always had to do that to them.
I would like to add on to this video. I just got done with the driver side and i would like to say IF you are using the bottle jack. Please place the jack behind the nut on the top arm. If you do not, the jack will have nothing to hit or lean against with all that pressure to hold it down and will pop out.
Very nicely done presentation. Toyota parts people want to know what Tundra model this front coil spring you are referring to will be coming from. like..2000-2006 extra cab, 4 door, 4x4, or what type of engine....I appreciate your time Thanks
Great vid. And i overheard Two Door Cinema Club in the background and got so stoked
I noticed that it has a 95-98 from bumper. I like this version better than the 99-02 version. My 98 runs fine at stock height with 265/75/16s and does not rub at all. that size was listed as factory option in 1998. I am curious what the best choice for shocks and struts are in 2020. Does anyone know if there are better shocks or springs for a 2 inch lift that have been released after the video was posted in 2013?
Awesome video and site. I am going to start shopping around today to do this on my 98 4Runner
This is exactly what i'm planning on doing to my 4runner (TRD/906/5100s). So you didn't find it necessary to put in an adjustable panhard bar, extended brake lines, parking brake bracket, or diff drop? Seems like everyone always says you need these, but people are often doing 3"+ of lift.
Thanks for the video. This is definitely giving me some confidence in tackling this myself.
Great informative video. I used this as a guide for replacing my shocks on my 2000 4runner.
Looks like a tight fit in there! Very nice looking truck.
I love your tutorial, well explained especially love your improvised techniques, Got another subscriber...cheers
I took your advice did the same install Love It. Great video Great Package Perfect Ride. Thanks Speedy
Awesome Vid! I will be doing this next week when my lift arrives! Nice Toy
The candy break is the best!!
Awesome! Gave me the inspiration to do the install on my 4Runner. Thank you!
Can you share the part number that you used in this video. The link you have in the description does not fit my 4runner the bushing is too small. The bushing in your video looks like the ones i need. Great video btw
Thank you
Great video. what I've been looking for, appreciate all the detail.
Great video, excellent detailed explanation. Thanks for the product info.
I was just causally watching last time bc I didn't have a 4runner, but now I do. How much did it cost you for the whole lift (all your links you have not available anymore) and how has it been holding up after all these years?
I don't remember but pretty cheap I think, like $500 or something maybe. It's held up great and still going strong.
You seem super knowledgeable on the 3rd gen and know how not to get ripped off with lift kits. What would you recommend for a nice riding 3" lift.
Love your rig and videos. Thank you for being so detailed. I have the exact same set up. Did you ever have to adjust the panhard bar and sway bar links?
Did not have to do anything with the PH bar.
Hey great video. I got my rear shocks off a Tundra but the bushings are too small to fit on the 4Runner bracket/mount. Do you know what size bushings the rear shocks take to fit to the 4Runner??
Wow! Those wheels look beautiful! I have a 97 limited and I'd love to find some wheels like this but I like the stock height I don't Wana get no lift kit
Great vid for sure. Glad you took the time to make a detailed video about this. Kudos!
Will those rear Tundra shocks work with 891 OME springs? And with front 883 OME?
Hay man your video inspired me . Great job
This video has inspired me to install a lift on my 4Runner! Quick question, though. I ordered all the exact part numbers, except Bilstein has discontinued the front shocks and are now offering what they say is an upgraded replacement (24-261425). They are still 5 way adjustable, but I’m wondering if it will make a difference which slot I set the lock ring in to get the 2”. Any help would be much appreciated!
UPDATE: the updated replacement for the front shocks gave me 2” with the lock ring set at the lowest setting, just like the older model would have.
Your frame and stock suspension look brand new! How'd you keep it from rusting? I pamper my 3rd gen and it's nowhere near as new looking as that.
Man this is exactly what I'm looking for !!! Would I have to swap anything else after lifting ? ( Control arms , or any other suspension components )? Also what if I did OME front springs instead of TUNDRA ? Just asking because the link says unavailable
Hi sir.
Great job on your install 👏
Can you please send me the specs on the wheels, tires, & lift .Hoping to spend time with dad after coming back on his deployment overseas. He has also a 3rd gen ! Thanks in advance. Stay safe.
It's all in the description
Those are nice set of rims! What do you call them? Iam interested on getting the same kind 😀 with the trd logo? Can you please tell me how. Bye the way how are the holding on this time ? Thanks 😊
Can you do this lift with stock shocks in the rear w/ the 906s or are the Tundra bilsteins required? Thanks.
I like the way you work safe, cheers
Awesome video inspired me to attempt a lift!... quick question and probably a dumb one but did you just buy two of the same front springs? Or are they two different part numbers? Thanks! Hope to have an answer
Quick question. Looking at doing this lift. My question is why did you use the Tundra bilstein 5100s vs the 4runner bilstein 5100? Also, Did you end up having any rubbing up front with the suspension? If so what was the fix?
Thanks for the detailed video speedy however your website seems to be down. I'm interested in retrieving part numbers for the TRD springs
Whr did u get the side steps???plz!!! Great looking truck and great vid.
I got them 12 years ago and they are no longer made. The closest thing I know of now are the rock slider bars.
@@SpeedysGarage : ok thanks
Did rotating the coil end up solving the rubbing on the spindle? Or grinding is more recommended? How’s the ride and the maneuverability of this set up?
Great video. Thanks for the helpful tips.
Yep, no grinding.
This vid was great. Thanks
Well it's been one year since I perform this lift thanks to your video and everything is going great not one problem .. The only small issue I have is my front passenger is a half an inch higher than the driver side is that normal or will the coil eventually settle down
Awesome video. Why not run tundra rear springs to match the front ones?
It's been years since I did it, but I don't think the Tundra springs would work.
Thanks a lot for a great video and an excellent channel. Would you mind giving me your impressions on the rear shock, after having what I assume is lots of seat time at this point? I've heard that the tundra 5100 rear is under-valved for a coil spring application, as it was designed for a leaf spring rear end. I've read a few comments about it being kind of bouncy in a 4Runner, especially with some extra weight in the back. Any thoughts you could share would be very helpful. Thank you.
I've not noticed any adverse ride characteristics. Matter of fact I personally find the ride to be much smoother than it was with the stock setup.
@@SpeedysGarage Thanks!... Choices, choices.
Very nice presentation.. better than toyota manual😂👍 thank u sir😍✌️🇨🇦🇺🇸
Excellent video brother. Subscribed
Appreciate that!
You said here's a side by side comparison at 13:38 with the stock vs the new. Did you happen to get a measurement of that coil?
I didn't measure I don't think. This was a few years ago so if I did it would be in the video.
@@SpeedysGarage I got some front coils from a 2010 TRD Tundra that I think will work.
Are you working on your 4runner, uploading videos soon? I have your website saved in my favorites trying to follow most of your mods.
1. Changing my stellar blue to thunder cloud metallic and getting sport hood.
2. Lift/tires
3. Grille
Are my top three choices then go from there.
Awesome video! It has motivated me to attempt the project myself. I read through all the comments b4 I wrote this question... will this lift work on an 01 2wd? I saw that s/o asked this question a year or two ago, but there was no definitive answer at the time...
It "should". I put that in quotes because I haven't personally done it but the suspension should be the same. Obviously do some research to confirm.
Thank you for the video Speedy... I have a 3rd gen 4runner... I have a set of KYB's specific for this truck... Can I run the tundra TRD coils with my 4runner KYB's? Or do I need to buy tundra struts to run them?
