  • Welp. After twelve years of anticipation waiting for another mainline Roller Coaster Tycoon game on the PC, this is the result. And yeah, it is a bit of a downer for long-time fans.

    The devs are actually quite serious about customer service. I had one talk to me personally on Steam trying to help get the game to run on my computer without it crashing. To no avail, of course, but dammit he tried. It's really heartbreaking to see how it turned out to say the least

    One of the things I like most about your reviews is that even when the game is as crap as this, and the disappointment is audible in your voice, you still manage to keep it fair and point out the good amongst the bad. A lot of other reviewers tend to rail on things hardcore and go into crazed polemics calling things the worst crap ever, so it's really refreshing to see someone who keeps chill even in the light of something as bad as this.

      That'd be pretty hard, The Sims 3 set the bar for a life sim pretty high (it didn't disappear when Sims 4 was released). It'd take a really talented developer with a decent amount of resources to outdo that game.

    • @shadowthephoenix1
      @shadowthephoenix1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Well it would be quite difficult for anyone to come close to the sims, but with the path 4 is going down its a possibility.
      Not that i'd really care, it seems all these simulation games a never as good now day. Like i still think Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 beats both RCT World and Planet Coaster, but that could just be my nostalgia for it.

      Gotta feel bad for the devs tho, they sure were handed a mess of a game to try and finish off XD Also feel bad for the 3 previous devs for being thrown off and then have the game still turn out trash anyway

    • @TheLomdr
      @TheLomdr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Parkitect's currently 20 bucks as well, but that's an early access game that went for style over fidelity at least when it comes to the park guests and employees. And unlike RCTW, you're also getting some pretty open development compared to this, with weekly devlogs and biweekly to monthly content updates. But yeah, Parkitect IS early alpha, with the last couple of patches adding in scenario support (with custom scenarios ontop of that) and then a research mode (Since the main mode, Sandbox, has no research, CS makers must do it themselves). Of course, there is a severe lack of rides, but, again, Alpha.
      This does seem like a mish mash of ideas put together without much care or planning put to them. Rides locked to scenarios sounds similar to Zoo Tycoon 2's campaign system, but it mostly adds flavor to your zoos. Also, you still have to research items with a similar system that Planet Coaster uses (Pick an item, funnel money there, and you get your upgrade after a bar runs out. Using this point of familiarity since ZT2 is kinda obscure now). The spline based coaster building brings me back to Sim Theme Park, which also brought me back to how...hard it was to make a decent coaster/log flume there. But yeah, the lack of features, some of which have been around since the first 2 games, is just astounding.
      And to reiterate what I posted at LGR's twitter, currently there is a 3 way split for the market that's happening: Parkitect aims to please those that liked the first 2 games more and tries to build off of that, but with more on the management side (Now you have to stock the stalls, currently a bit weird but too early to say a good or bad thing). Planet Coaster aims to please those that liked Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 and its expansion, plus aims to give you tools to allow you to make more realistic looking parks vs the older games (would be cool if they got the means to license RL park stuff like in the first 3 RCT games, but we'll see). RCTW seems to only exist for the brand clingers on both sides of the wallet: the diehard fans that reject anything without the RCT name and the executives who decided to put out this game how it was.

      If I had to guess it's the self-fulfilling prophecy of "non-shooters don't sell". Publishers dismiss them, they get no money or support, they do badly, publishers feel vindicated in brushing them off. Rinse and repeat.
      I reckon the recent for the "recent" surge was because of a few indie/lower budget hits, that big publishers then tried to replicate but without understanding why they did well.

Then it was picked up again later and the new games that were made was a reboot of Asteroids and the new AITD. • @harbinger6574
      @harbinger6574 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Atari don't actually own the Trademark or the IP, Chris Sawyer still does. They have a license which gives them exclusive rights to create/market new games in the series. It's more like a lease than anything else, they still have to pay out royalties to Chris Sawyer.
      Personally I feel for Chris because Atari are have obliterated the reputation of RCT in recent years starting with RCT 3D on the Nintendo 3DS in 2012. He's probably made more in royalties from RCT1-3 in the last few years than from any of the recent outings.
      It's a shame Frontier didn't have the cash on hand to buy up Atari's RCT license/back catalogue back in 2013 when it was being auctioned with a minimum reserve of $3.5m. They had all their money invested in Elite Dangerous back then and the best they could achieve was an agreement to extend their rights to RCT3 which allowed them to self-publish the game on iOS last year.
      Following the deal Atari reached with Alden (their largest Chapter 11 creditor) earlier this year I expect Atari will continue to limp on using their tactic of hiring unknown developers to produce games that barely resemble the IP they're exploiting. As such I don't think their RCT license/back catalogue will come back on the market.
      Even if it did the only incentive I can see for Frontier is they could potentially go back and remaster RCT3, taking advantage of multi-threaded CPUs etc. but now Planet Coaster is out it's probably a better option to look entirely forwards and build up Planet Coaster so it eventually has all of the features available in RCT3 Platinum (and more).
      To be honest I don't think Frontier would be interested any more, the damage to the franchise is so severe it's probably beyond saving at this point.

      I don't think Atari will die - they sort of continue to hang in this negative limbo between "we were the legendary game company" and "we can't get our shit together". all the while passing the buck from company to company. There's just enough retro gamers into their stuff, me included, to keep the name alive, but just enough bad against them to cast a dark shadow as long as it's publicized.
      I always thought the best thing Atari could do is take their existing IP - Make ONE lower production, quality, Flashback type unit per console at most complete with cartridge slot and accurate controllers and keep selling that - and then make ONE new line of products aimed at casual gaming, because that's what made the old Atari games fun - just go pop in Asteroids, play for 15 minutes if you want and have some time to kill, then go about your day.

      While I do like CS, it just isn't charming at all. Spend so much time catering to the particular and single minded traffic AI engine that you feel more like a traffic manager than a mayor.
      In SC4, all your hard work shone like a diamond. Once you've customized your cities per your artistic vision and incentivized nonstop growth via city-to-city connections, your reward is the regional view, where your multi city regional mega hub revealed itself, and you see your multi million population blossoming under your management, and you think "damn, I made this". That's what an emperor must have felt like. CS simply can't hope to achieve any of that.

      If anything, I'd have to blame Atari, they did the same scummy shit before and fucked over certain devs (particularly Reflections, who now work at UbiSoft, which isn't the best either but so much better than Atari) and they've tarnished the RCT name, with RCT3D and RCT4 Mobile (yes, they tried a mobile RCT game).

    My guess? They must have known Planter Coaster was coming out and decided they should release the game early in order to get their foot in the door first. "We'll just add the rest of the game later under the guise of loads of free content!"
    This is probably a desperate attempt to prevent competition to add even more time to the long development process due to increasing customer expectations. "Lots of gamers seem to accept unfinished games that are completed later, so this will do fine despite minimal testing, right?"
    It's not like prioritizing gaining an advantage by a timely release over quality control is new. Sonic Boom: The Rise of Lyric's staff on quality control state that most, if not all of their suggestions were ignored. It was probably due to the fact some folks wanted to release the game before November was over, so it can be ready for shopping season.
    I'm probably being too harsh, and the reasons for the game to be released in this state may be more innocent, but I felt like getting this possible scenario off my chest. After all, Atari Games didn't have the best reputation for a few years now.

      Pretty much, Electronic. Probably because of the nature of how video game development happens. From what I've seen in board games, games CAN jump from publisher to publisher depending on how the designer feels on how said publisher is doing their jobs, mainly because of the more independent nature of design and development. Though, it is a huge case of Apples to Oranges, so, yeah

    Why are all the Simulation games dying off? Did the old devs forget how to make sim type games?

    • @Animize

      Cities Skylines was fine... They are coming in - not as fast as back in the days and absolutely not the same franchises, as those are really dying (Sim City, Rollercoaster Tycoon, The Sims (the newest wasn't that baaaad, but it wasn't good either... however, we'll see what happens next)...
      I really think we should wait and see... The problem is probably that most money isn't made with simulations... So they cut back on development cost and time... And then they wonder why even less people buy the buggy and unfinished games... It's kind of a cycle...

      Any game with touch screen controls is almost without fault going to be geared to a casual market. It means all of us old school hard core sim folks will be left high and dry unless we want to play generic 3rd party restaurant simulator 37.

    They Ruined Rollercoaster Tycoon. It was done by a company on the cheap that had no intention of creating anything except a budget title that was going to ride on the name of "Rollercoaster Tycoon". It wasn't until fans started screaming at them that they even started to fix things and shape it up to the mess that it is. The REAL next "Rollecoaster Tycoon" is actually "Planet Coaster". It's actually made by the people who made "Rollercoaster Tycoon 3" and it's the true successor to "Rollercoaster Tycoon" in every way and it's a far better game. This company apparently, while it was designing this new "Rollercoaster Tycoon" was also diverting a large amount of it's resources into designing the crap mobil game "complete with microtransactions and paywalls" instead of improving the mess that they had for the PC game. Nerd Cubed did a nice set of videos about how this series has fallen.
