M66 vs 627 Tracker - which warrior wins!

  • Both revolvers, while being “medium-sized handguns, do fill the hand more than small-frame revolvers. This contributes to better control and accuracy than you can obtain with a small-frame handgun. Both revolvers handle .38 Special, .38 Special +P, and .357 magnum quite well.

    Excellent comparison ! Yes , you can definitely see the difference , the "Tracker" seemed to have less muzzle rise during your side-by-side demonstration while shooting the magnum rounds . However as for accuracy , I couldn't see that one shot better than the other , they both shot well . Actually , you did the shooting so I should've said , you shot well . They're both very elegant revolvers , and I'm sure I'd be satisfied with either one . But I kinda' like the traditional look of the mod. 66 , plus recoil isn't really an issue for me . Anyhow , I think your video was comprehensive & informative . Thank you very much , great job !

    Unbelievable that Taurus still uses the ports on the 627 🤣🤣🤣
    Even though Taurus listed them both with Medium frames
    When compared to S&Ws
    They are closer to the L frame than K frame
    I have owned both
    The 627 is basically a 3 inch barrel with a built in compensator
    The rifling only runs 3 inches of the barrel
    I wish … the 627 had a un ported 3 inch barrel.. they honestly couldn’t make them fast enough.. a true Medium Framed 7 shot 357 with a 3 inch barrel
    I don’t understand why they can’t see the potential…

    Excellent and extremely thorough review of these two excellent revolvers. It's sad that Taurus gets such a bad rap. I think it's mainly due to some of their past QC issues on their old semi-autos. I have a Taurus G2C semi-auto along with a Taurus 605 Polymer Defender .357 and the Taurus 627 .357 (6.5" barrel). No reliability issues with any of them. The only negative I have is on my 605 polymer defender which sadly, is not a very accurate revolver. However like how it looks and how comfortable it is to shoot (and how compact it is), that I may invest in having a gun smith take a look at it to see if the accuracy issue is caused by a slight timing or luckup issue.
    But my 627 Tracker shoots like an absolute dream. It is one of my favorite handguns to shoot and is what got me into reloading. The only sad thing is that it doesn't look like Taurus still makes the scope mounts that were originally made for this particular revolver. That was disappointing but not a big deal as I still shoot very well with the iron sights. The ported muzzle is a big reason why I went with the 627 Tracker and I'm quite happy that I did as it's nice how fast I can get back on target using hot 158 grain .357 magnum rounds. I also love how smooth the double action trigger is on it. Overall just a quality and easy to shoot wheel gun that sadly does not get nearly as much attention as it should.
    So thanks again to bringing attention to these great Taurus revolvers.

      @RangeRoninChronicles  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for taking the effort to watch and comment. Both help me and the channel grow. You are correct in that Taurus went through a bad period. From what I understand, it was because Taurus was re-tooling and replacing out-dated equipment. It appears that their quality is getting better, which makes them more competitive, but it will take a while to regain the trust of those unwilling to take a chance on Taurus products.
      I have reviewed quite a few Taurus revolvers of late and all seem to be quality builds. The Taurus TX22 that I reviewed is an excellent .22 LR pistol.
      I would like to try a Taurus TH in .40 Smith and Wesson to see how one compares to the other comparable-sized .40 S&W pistols that I have (Springfield Armory XDm and Glock). That's not a commitment, just something I would like to try...a definite maybe?

    • @wigon
      @wigon 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RangeRoninChronicles I definitely plan on getting a TX-22 (the compact model which comes optics ready). Everyone I've known that has one raves about it. The TH series I agree look very intriguing. I've been eyeballing the Taurus TH-9 and almost bought one awhile back but ended up getting a CZ P-07. From what I understand however (and this could be a myth), the TH series are supposed to be based upon the CZ-75 design. I love SA/DA guns so I still may pick up a TH-9 at some point. If Taurus is smart, they'll make an upgraded TORO version of their TH-9 and TH-40 with the slide cut out for optics. That's because there are VERY few modern SA/DA pistols out there today that are cut for optics. Those that are, tend to be very expensive competition models.
      Another thing that is very excited is that on their website they have a TH10 10mm model that they're making apparently. I haven't seen it yet in gun stores, but I'm sure it will sell quite well now that 10mm is seeing a resurgence on the market.

    • @RangeRoninChronicles
      @RangeRoninChronicles  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@wigon Ayup! A DA/SA 10mm is intriguing. As long as the barrels have good case support, the frames are beefed, and the recoil system is up to handle the mighty 10 pressure, it just might be a good firearm. I have a 10 from Springfield Armory and Glock plus a couple of 1911s. At the TH 10 price point, they could give the 10mm market a run for their money - if the quality is in place. We'll see what the future holds.

      I've owned a tracker .44 mag for over 10 years. I hated those ribbed grips, as the revolver had a bad habit under recoil of pushing back against my finger by the trigger guard and bruising it. Last year, I finally bought Pachmayr grips and that solved the problem. ZERO problems with the gun and it is very accurate.

    Cost comparison? I have the 66 and the ergonomics feel better in my hand compared to the "carry" handles Taurus is going to on many revolvers. I'm not going to carry a 2 1/2 # gun and the 66 just feels better in my hand. Recoil is tolerable.

    • @RangeRoninChronicles
      @RangeRoninChronicles  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting. As for your question, I can only quote MSRP; The Model 66 (the one reviewed) goes for $621.99 MSRP, the 627 Tracker (the one reviewed) has an MSRP of $590.99. Both are according to the Taurus website. Of course, they can be found for less.
      If the Model 66 had a more rounded back of the grip, I would have liked it better, as I prefer a more rounded and wider grip. I liked the 627 Tracker over the Model 66 simply because the way the grip felt in the hand, and having a milder recoil with .357 magnum was a plus in my book. Both were as accurate as I could make them, which means that my lack of shooting ability should not reflect on the firearms.

      @@RangeRoninChronicles Thanks for the reply. I ask because a few years ago I had a friendly conversation with an armed security guard from whatever company the grocery store chain had contracted with that year, and he had a Taurus 82 on. Turns out it was issue from the company and all their personnel had to use them. By this time, the state of Florida had already allowed for the use of 9mm. semi auto pistols for security guards. Then when I asked him what he was carrying in that 82 for ammo, imagine my surprise when he pulled out a speed loader of 6 130 grain FMJ round nose loads. He then proceeded to inform me that those were all any of the armed guards in his company were allowed to use in those 82's.

    • @RangeRoninChronicles
      @RangeRoninChronicles  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for replying. While the security company that I worked for did not mandate the type of ammunition we could use (RN, HP, JHP, etc.), it was mandated by the state (at that time) that only .38 Special ammunition could be shot. Now, that's not saying that we could not carry a .357 magnum revolver, only that we could only shoot .38 Special (a little semantic wordplay?). No consideration was provided for +P ammunition, but since the Model 82 was not rated for +P, I had to carry and qualify with standard pressure loads.
      By the way, Merry Christmas to you and yours!
