- Saga Music & Gold Star banjos have done it once again and made something magical.
I am now lucky enough to own two J.D Crowe model Gold Stars, one built in 1981 and the other in 2017. They were each the fifth banjo built in their respective year. Here is your chance to hear two GS Crowes 36 years apart, with the same production number, identical Remo heads, Silvio Ferretti 11/16 Crowe spaced bridges, fresh GHS PF-185 almost medium strings, played over the same mics with Shelor stainless steel fingerpicks & a BlueChip thumb pick. The 81 is a maple banjo with a 20 hole flathead ring, and the 17 is a mahogany banjo with a no-hole flathead ring.
I hope you enjoy "Home Sweet Home" and expect to see more of #170005 in the future!!
Click here for more info about the new Crowes! www.sagamusic.c...
(I realize that the audio and visual are not completely matched up - bear with me until I can upgrade to a better production computer.)
All the best and keep rollin,
RC

I just bought a 2017 jd Crowe model! This is definitely making me think I made the right call
This is just a great video between a historic original JD Crowe and the new one Saga decided to release. Having not watched this video in a minute, it really makes you wonder as the sound of these banjos, one old and one new really have that good full bluegrass sound 🪕
I was just gifted a GF-100JD by my mentor's son... He said his Dad would want me to have one of his banjos. I really dig it! Plays and sounds great....
Wow!!! I choose both!!! But I believe you could pick a lard can banjo and make it sound Awesome 👌
They both sound very close to each other (over TH-cam), but the lower notes on the older banjo have more growl which I like. The newer one sounds slightly muffled in the lower notes. Your picking compliments both instruments - Very nice. I would definitely own either!
To my ear the gold one has a much richer tone and is not as harsh. Much sweeter thanks for sharing you really rock would love to get to jam with you sometime
VERY close....amazing when you consider the difference in age. I just bought #7!
I read that the newer model is mahogany and the older one is maple. I wonder how much the variances between the two have to do with the age difference, the different wood and the gold vs. the nickel/chrome hardware. How much difference does each component make?
I think as of now, B of course sounds better, being more opened up. But I liked the overall tone of A more, definitely can't wait to hear that one in 36 years!
Plan on doing any more videos with the new Crowe? Would love to hear more, thinking about adding one to my collection.
A is good; B is better...has that nasally growl I like!
I agree & I can't wait to see what the 17 sounds like in 36 years!!
Agreed!
Russ how does the neck profile feel on the new Crowe? Is it a thicker neck or on the thinner side? I'm thinking bout buying one for myself.
Everything about it feels great! I'm going to bring it along this weekend with Kentucky Thunder to try it out with the band. Jake and I might even shot a video with it!
Both sound good brother! The new JD being mahogany has a little softer tone. Course good tone is as much your right hand as the banjo!
I think they are very close in tone quality. The older banjo sounds like it has a bit more midrange and less presence, so if anything, the newer JD is a little bit clearer sounding, less "thick" sounding (not that the older banjo is muddy sounding at all, but just a bit darker sounding). I probably like the newer banjo better overall by just a little bit.
The comparison is a bit unfair, in that your new one needs some time to break in. It is a tremendous sounding banjo for a new one, I think they have a hit on their hands! I'm biased because you are playing a song I love the most, and was the reason I took up the 5 string!
i'm loving my 06 gf85. i was wondering is the goldstar the only new banjo you'd consider going on stage with?
I liked the gold 81 better.
Whats the name of the song? any tab ????
"Home Sweet Home"...the tab is in the Earl Scruggs banjo instruction book. The recording of it is on the Foggy Mountain Banjo LP
I prefer the Granada copy.
