    **Important Note**
    I really enjoy watches and that's why I started this channel so I could review them regularly but my satisfaction is not found in owning or experiencing watches, no matter how many I may accumulate or how luxurious and expensive they may be . . .
    Wise King Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 5:10 "He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity."
    The truth is, material possessions of any kind, money, power, etc. never can and never will satisfy our hungering souls. Only knowing, loving, and serving God can truly satisfy.
    The only way we can have a real relationship with God, the Creator of the Universe, is through the Lord Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God.
    "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6
    Through Christ's sacrificial death on the cross, for my sins and your sins, and His resurrection from the dead we can have peace with God (Romans 5:1), forgiveness of sins (Acts 10:43), eternal life (John 3:16), and so much more!
    In Christ, we can know true joy now and for all eternity.
    "He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life." - 1 John 5:12

    I'd suggest scratching the inside of the band next time. Still tests it the same, but hides the wear better when you wear it.

    Also, the watch industry typically uses the Vickers scale to measure hardness. 316L steel is about 200 vickers. Grade 5 Ti is about 350. Many watch makers who use hardening techniques range from 500 t0 2000 vickers. Sapphire is about 2200 vickers. Diamond is about 10,000 vickers. So Citizens claim of 5x 316L is approximately 1000 vickers. Damasko watches with ice hardened steel is >700 vickers, Sinn watches with tegimented steel is >1200 vickers. Etc.

    • @mechakitsune
      @mechakitsune 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well said. Mohs picks are basically logarithmic. Jumping from 4 to 5 is a much bigger jump than 2 - 3. Vickers his a better way of measuring these kinds of things.

  • @TekaDon
    @TekaDon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    You should have a “control” test. Do the same thing to a non-hardened watch with 316L steel.

    • @TheTownWatch
      @TheTownWatch  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      As I mentioned, I hope to do more of these kinds of tests and to get better with them. Do you think the Mohs hardness test kit is a good thing to use here? Also, the problem I will face is getting watches to perform these kinds of test on. At this point with the channel we don’t have the resources to buy watches and scratch them 😆.

    I just threw mine on a Bond nato and only use the bracelet for formal occasions. Cool video though I dunno why the main thing people worry about is scratches. Everything will eventually scratch, even that sapphire crystal. I care about shock resistant, dust, mud, chemical resistant, rust resistant, water resistant to atleast 100m. This watch is all that.

    I was also very surprised to see my $500 Citizen Royal Marines Commando Super Titanium (BJ9140 52E) getting scratches even easier than that. I sold it soon afterwards, because "Super Titanium" had nothing to do with Citizen's older, "Duratect" coating used on another watch I had, the Citizen 4X4 (BJ9074-55H). That was much tougher by experience.

      @@libertyliberty4371 The watch is worth the €300, provided that you do not care much about the scratches it will inevitably get. The monocoque case is a rare feature so if you'd like to have it and you like the feel of titanium, you will have to compromise. Alternatively, you can go for the BJ7100-82E, it's the same design minus the titanium and the one-piece case.

    I have the same Watch and i got scratches on the side of the watch by a little impact on concrete.. main thing about this watch is the tough word Citizen uses to get the sales.. there is another watch that I'd like to see a comparison ( Victorinox I N O X ve Citizen tough Promaster..) I think that's a battle that lots would love to see since Victorinox Say their INOX model it's indestructible.. This citizen movement e168 it's been accurate so far, I own this watch since December 2018 and I bought it brand new and I don't wear it every day but so far I'm pleased with the monocoque case, I think if they made this watch in titanium and with the date window a little larger and some more blue lume instead of the green one it would be great.. !! I still believe that citizen it's the real deal when it comes to quality for the money and in my opinion citizen is the best for quartz solar technology and the only way I can get over with the non so much scratching resistance it's the fact that the watch gains character and personality.. so I still think is citizen should stop the BS about titanium coating 5x harder crap and use titanium and make their lume as bright as Seiko lume keeping the citizen blue cobalt lume.. thanks for the video and I still think the watch is worth the price if you like it and if it's under the 300 US dollar and if you keep it until the fucker gives up.. only by then you will be satisfied and bored of the piece.. but it may be the case we die and the watch still keeps on going strong!! Cheers

    Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if their claimed hardness specs are fudged some. Completely anecdotally, I have a NB1050-59A with duratec coating and it doesn't seem to resist scratches any better than any of my other stainless steel watches. One of the things that might make a difference is, even if the hardness is greater, it just has very mild/light/weak brushing compared to say my Hamilton so it doesn't hide scratches as well. Overall, it seems marketing heavy and hasn't performed as I had hoped.

    Skip all his blathering and go to 14:35 to see the test. Yeah, he likes to talk ...
    ... and by the way, Duratect MRK is NOT a coating. It's a surface treatment which hardens the case of the base alloy. So he got that wrong too.

      J. City Reviews Really nice test you made between Uncoated stainless steel and the coated steel in the other video. Good to se that the coated one actually resists scratches a bit better. I did look up TiC and it seems to be really, really hard, like 9+on the hardness scale. Doesnt mean that it works like that when its applied as a coating of course. Ive actually been thinking about bying the Casio s100 so if I do I could send you a link of the bracelett. But its a pretty pricy watch so I probably go for a G-shock or a steinless Seiko instead haha. Keep up the good work with the videos. :)

    I just bought a Citizen with Super-Titanium; the Paradigm 38mm silver eco-drive. Nice watch, but it has mineral crystal which surprised me. To pair super titanium with mineral crystal is both contradictory and monumentally stupid although a good way to make sure I need to buy a new watch sooner. I think it's a cynical move on Citizens part especially since a paradigm with sapphire is only about $20 more.

    i called citizen to find out what the hardness was of the buckle on the dive strap that came with my new $1100 supertitanium duratect satellite solar diver watch. i wanted to know because when removing the buckle from the strap i popped out the springbar on it, and when putting it back the springbar slid on the buckle leaving a faint mark which surprised me. i hoped my watchcase was not that scratchable by a steel springbar. the citizen tech spent some time on the phone with me going through materials until he found the info, which was that the buckle was not treated with the same level of surface hardening as the watchcase. i didn't tell him that i'd lightly scratched it, so as not to bias any answer. so what he told me was from citizen tech background. i don't know if there's any difference in application of bracelet hardening vs watchcase...as there was in my watch between watchcase and buckle alone, but i suppose it's possible and thus the reason yours scratched?

    There is some confusion about Citizen’s marketing material. To my understanding there are three marketing brands. “Super Titanium”, “Duratect”, and “Duratect Alpha”. Alpha is their premium hardening method used only on JDM models, that cost >$1000 with hardness over 2000 vickers. “Super Titanium” is proprietary hardened Ti. Duratect is some type of Nitrogen tempering method applied to steel or Ti. The product description here suggests the STEEL case is coated in hardened Ti. Confusing.

      I really appreciate you watching and commenting and giving all this feedback and information. I hope to do more of these kinds of tests in the future so this information helps me a lot. Maybe I’ll reach out to you if I need some more information on different steel types etc. sometimes I find it hard to find specific information like that. Do you have any resources for finding this kind of steel info?

      Case hardening in watches is an interesting subject to me. I have some links and info on hardened alloys and coatings used in watches - I can email them if you're interested. My main objection to your video is that you are disappointed in the results when I don't think you should be. Hardened alloys are 'Scratch Resistant', not 'Scratch Proof'. The only thing proven in the test, is that the Citizen Promaster Tough is "Not Scratch Proof". I still believe the Citizen Promaster Tough is an awesome all-around watch for under $250 (Hardened Steel, Sapphire, Lume, 200M WR). Damasko and Sinn is the next equivalent comparable watch (3 hand watch with Hardened Case) and they costs 4-5 times more. Also, the Mohs scale is an old fashioned qualitative / subjective measure of hardness. Vickers and Rockwell are current quantitative measures of hardness used in metallurgy. The Mohs results don't really tell you anything useful about the watch compared to a standard. but I'm no expert. Very cool video idea though.

      Thanks for the feedback! Do you think the Mohs hardness scratch test kit is a good tool to use in testing or is there something better. I assume there is a way to compare the Mohs hardness list with the Vickers list. I would love if you could pass on any information you have about steel in watches, etc. You can email me at - coinquest333 at gmail . com
      Thanks!

      Hi JMG your knowledge it's really impressive and far beyond the average, thanks for sharing! I get your point when you distinguish between scratch resistance and scratch proof. But this test, I think is really an appropriate one related to Citizen's advertising...I have a catalogue where they state their super titanium is 5 times more resistant than the normal titanium to abrasion. I do love Citizen, and I use mine for diving, but if the company is promoting a product for the scratch performance...well I am really curious about it, and since these result I think they should modify something in their ads...I mean if I had to sell a cake I would promote its taste not its nutritional values, unless those are worthy. Hope you got my point, really good video.

      Daniel H Thanks for watching. According to Citizen’s website, this watch is made of stainless steel but has a “super titanium” coating on both the case and bracelet. I won’t be scratching the case purposely! 😁

  • @seybertooth9282
    @seybertooth9282 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Their marketing is confusing. The problem with titanium watches (i.e. not this one) is that while it's lighter than steel it scratches much easier. As I understood it, the "super titanium" coating is supposed to mitigate this so you get the light weight without the fragile surface. But with this watch, which is steel, which is MORE scratch resistant than titanium, it sounds like they have "improved" the scratch resistance with titanium... which makes no bloody sense as titanium is less resistant than steel. I sense marketing BS in play here.

      Den koch I felt like all the information that I gave building up to the actual scratching of the watch was necessary information. Not everyone watching the video knows what “super titanium” is or how a “scratch test kit” works so the explanation was needed. For those who know all of these things they can simply skip ahead to the scratching part.

      Except those Swiss watches if taken care of will still be ticking 100 years from now. The eco drive will not. Not that you're gonna care if your watch is still working 100 years from now. But to slight that type of marvel just because it takes more upkeep is asinine.
