rainbow Six Vegas 2 had same feature I remember how my friend and I laughed when we uploaded our faces taken on the webcam. Special forces with the faces of schoolchildren in low resolution
IL2: Sturmovik allowed custom faces. A mate and I spent an inordinate amount of time flying formation and laughing our arses off at the various photos we'd chosen to use as in game faces. Quality time.
There was a popular female pilot in the online community that had a nude version of herself as her pilot "skin".. I believe on the forums at one point she said she used to be an exotic dancer, so I believe it was taken from her actual image! Different times..
When making Slendytubbies back in 2012 I always made sure to include a custom texture option for player characters. It simply makes the game more fun and gives more personality, good times. :')
man these type of costumization is just way better than your average skin youd get from microtransaction games does nowadays. Wheres the fun in games anymore?
I had this amazing moment where I had learned that you can also change pupils in Arma 3 and naturally put a grand middle finger in them. About a year later while playing on some server I noticed the pupils of one dude looking somewhat strange. As I got closer I realized they had the EXACT same image of the middle finger I used back then. It felt like I had met my soul brother. We never talked or met again.
I created a VRchat avatar port of an opflash soldier a while back. I included the ability to change and swap out the face with most of the ones featured in the game as well as included a bunch of popular custom ones people used back in the day. Good fun!
There are some already pretty accessible tools to make a quick dirty copy of a person's head. I used the (truly cursed) face gen to play Fallout NV as myself. But as a 3D artist I think the best tools for High quality character creation are Character creator4 (very pricey) and metahuman ( hard to make work with anything but unreal) hope those are worth having a look at.
I was actually messing around with these faces just a few weeks ago LOL I made some custom faces, reminded me how awesome and easy it was to make those. Crazy seeing you mentioning it now Haha
This game rocks. I remember getting it for almost free (mail-in-rebate) when I was a kid and spending almost every day playing it. Still fire it up occasionally to play the Battlefields scenario.
game devs nowadays seems to hate fun things, games used to have all kinds of silly things, cheats and even cross-game integrations (Simcity 2000/Simcopter/TheSims2), now just to get some basically functionallity of a game, they charge you 30 dolar DLC for the privilege.
Half Life 1's SD single player Gordon Freeman, CJ from GTA San Andreas, the DuoLingo owl, but not just the face, the entire owl, and the Hooters logo, with the OOs lined up with the eyes so the Hooters logo can blink while staring into your soul.
Custom faces were one thing, but if you were full-on milsim twyhard you had a custom web server set up linked to your squad patch image files for vehicles and units etc
you've been missing out man, I stumbled on this back when this was new :D, Also its partly the low poly nature of older games that made it easier to make custom face textures
Always thought how it'd be cool if you could 3D scan your face and have it sent to the game devs along with your username and have them connect it to your multiplayer character.
In baldur's gate/nwn/etc you too, can customize character icons which i happily used to make a party of my look-alikes. A shame it doesn't work on character sprites / models without some extra, extra work. Albeit result is also 300% more hilarous...
That is the coolest character customization i have ever seen in a game. Let’s be honest though, if this was added to an online game, half of the people would have anime girl faces, which is a shame
Gotta love the outro. I will be leaving some of my ideas in the description LOL rest assured! Ok to be less of a smartass, nice video philip this gave me a good chuckle!
Reminds me of the sims 1. At the time I obviously wanted to make a naked lady, but my skills let me down & I settled for a black cat woman instead. Also another sims game where you could replace the art your sim drew on the canvas with whatever you wanted.
If you didnt know about this feature, maybe its worth mentioning that you can even add custom sounds, which will be played over the radio in game! Format needs to be *.ogg and all those sounds files needs to be placed in "Sound" folder in your profile. Later you can play it even in MP (if server allows it) via radio menu (0-0- custom iirc) :) (also file size is limited)
This feature is in ARMA 1, 2, and even 3. The maximum file size for any given face is dependent on the server settings iirc. If its bigger than the file limit, it'll remain default.
Had this game since 2014, and honestly I'd like for Philips to make a real tutorial series on the AI behaviors and how the commander tool functions. Because the closest I can find was inaccurate or lack luster information in the manual and some people not ENTIRELY sure guestimating with experimentation
I make missions for this game ever since i started playing the multiplayer and have published around 25 original missions across multiple mods. You should totally host a mission making competition
For some reason my first thought when I clicked on this video was "chicken wing"…so, I guess that is my suggestion. Perhaps because I had butter chicken for dinner.

Although I would have needed a webcam or something to take the photo, I don't know how I would have taken a camera photo, and then somehow upload it on a floppy disc or something (man, digital cameras, USB flash drives, and smartphones made things easier, lol).
would you consider making hammer 2 (source 2) tutorials like in the past? that would be lovely, seeing the style of editing akin to a low budget dude with ass mic helping community understand basics of map making etc

I dearly miss custom graffiti
The fun has been monetized.
Tony Hawk's Underground 2 has a similar feature, and the faces are even synced in the online multiplayer. I've seen Drake, Trump, etc.
This is possible in arma 3 as well actually, I hope it returns for 4
Another w 2philips video.
The blinking is uncanny. Why don't modern game characters blink?
This has continued into the modern Arma games as well iirc, extra eerie with the hi-res face mesh and moving mouth with comms in Arma 3
Game from 2001 with a facial animation that can easily accept face textures.... ahead of its time.
