Half-Life 2 shot for realism in a science fiction setting, rather than action. Whereas I feel most games at that time and this time, strive more to be like movies full of epic explosions and constant enemy mowing. Half-Life, both 1 and 2, are like reading a book, it lets you immerse in the world, rather than say "Oh yeah my main character is in this situation now", it makes it feel like you ARE Gordan Freeman.
That was why the original Hal-Life was so massive for the games industry. Doom being in the category of "FPS with great stories" I found funny because the devs explicitly said that stories in games mattered about as much as stories in pornos, and the fact that in-game there isn't much of a story to be gleamed which is fine because that wasn't what Id was going for. Half-Life though was different from everything else on the market in 1998 because, like you said, it is like reading the book. There is a tangible, fleshed-out narrative that other games of the time didn't have.
@@realpizzarat Black Mesa is good, too! It is a perfect example of a "remake" because it is basically the same game but better, while being different enough for those who played the original. Plus, it looks awesome.
Reality is simple, this is true since it started a lot of these other games, though it aged really well to play, replayability never was it's strong side.
For me, part of what makes Hl2 so memorable is its simplicity. The hud is minimal compared to games of the time. The protagonist, despite being important and well-known in the game world, is mute and we rarely see his personality (in Hl1 he looks confused and a little scared when inspecting Xen's weapons, for example). The maps are easy to follow (not all of them have good design) you don't need a giant arrow on a wall to show you the way. You rarely hear music. Most of the atmosphere is captivating and oppressive AND YET it's subtle. It's not 24/7 telling you that the bad guys are bad, on the contrary, it shows it. And it shows it in mundane ways with cinematics in the same gameplay without breaking immersion. and this is something that Valve knew how to do, make an enjoyable game, make a game that acts like a game. not a 5 hour movie with nomination worthy performances. (there's nothing wrong with a moviegames but... once you see all those cinematics it breaks in bit of acycle) is subtle in the way it tells its story. It's a simple and very well-founded gameplay. revolutionary physics even by today's standards. Captivating, mysterious lore, so mysterious that most of the information is taken from speculations made by fans. It is a game that no matter where you leave it, it is entertaining and you get to the action directly.
