Arma is the only game where I can get yelled out by a 14year old kid telling me to follow the chain of command while watching a car spaz out into the stratosphere all while I hearing another squad mate explain how to make napalm in a public server. 10/10, amazing community.

Reforger is not bad as a starting point for ARMA noobs. It's quite fun.
I have, as of writing this, 3,835 hours between Arma 3 and Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead (only accounting for 191 hours), and I'd wager that as far as Arma games go, Reforger is THE best place to start in the entire series. Reforger is much less convoluted in terms of controls and scope, while also looking better and having better QoL features than the previous games. The only thing Reforger is missing for me personally is something like the 3den editor. But, as it stands right now, Reforger is just a test bed for the next game and not a full game in the Arma franchise. I do hope the ease of use that Reforger has makes its return in the next game, because as popular as Arma 3 was and still is, the next game, hopefully, has the potential to be the best game in the entire franchise.
It's naive to think that people new to ArmA series will be interested in other ArmA games afer trying reforger, especially when it comes to multiplayer. Sub-20FPS is just not playable experience. It's no longer an animated "movie" but a series of static pictures displayed in a rapid succession. Only people willing to put up with something this unacceptable are people like us who grew up with OFP and ArmA series, so they can ignore it through strongly rose tinted glasses. But nearly anyone who never played ArmA game before will not be able to put up which such terrible performance (regardless of hardware) and such extreme degree of jank.

@@LudvikKoutnyArt while yes, the game has the WORST connection issues of a game I played ever, the experience it provided is definitely unique. Sure, I love 3's futuristic/modern setting, but it's very old. We're talking more than 10 years. The community it boasted back then is not the same now. Reforger is at a place where most noobs can get the basic idea of what goes on in an ArmA server.
I have massive problems with FOV. I simply can't set it to feel right.
Second issue is that for some reason I can't see well in Reforger. I don't know why. The game looks great but my eyes don't like it.
I must say the Czech scenery and architecture is absolutely on spot. I'm absolutely stunned by how precise and beautiful it looks.
One should hope so, the devs are after all literally called "Bohemia Interactive". If they couldn't provide an interactive Bohemia, then what would be the point? lol.

@@keenmate9719 They could have, and they might still with Arma 4. Arma Reforger's default map is a remake of the one from one of Bohemia Interactive's earliest games (I think from either Operation: Flashpoint or the first Arma), and it's reasonable for the devs to have gone with a familiar setting for their earliest games.
Had an ARMA experience where some 10 year old kid was having fun blathering out orders to the whole squad for like 40 minutes, his older brother came back laughing how cooperative the team was.
The French server was pure Kafka 🤣

W.C.S servers are the best good community and if you are new you will learn fast and others are really helpful, game mode is also simple.

6k hrs in A3 and 2k in Reforger here - imo the biggest problem with these games are the server owners and the way they have an inherent need to absolutely flood their servers with inane BS that you'd likely never use, in the way of mods.
When you find a server or group that DOESN'T do that, the quality of experience skyrockets, but they're very few and far between because the game already requires so many mods just to be good. Fantastic video showing that the game can be fun, but it's not (and never will be) great. And I love it :)

@@glennpeterson1357 I see, my bad. That part was mainly directed towards A3, since the vanilla setting is so boring and honestly quite ugly to play. The vanilla Reforger experience has come a long way, it used to be very boring and lackluster.
Man wth Arma 3 is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I just don't think people understand WHY. You basically have INFINITE possibilities due to their absolutely HUGE amount of different functions available meaning you can script pretty much anything. I understand your gripes with mods but it is because arma is so configurable and open to everyone that mods are easy (relatively) to make and the reason their is SO MANY of them. No it isnt a game with a set gamemode and what not but that isnt what its designed for. Arma is more of a sandbox where people can utilise the tools provided to them such as 3den editor or Zeus to create hundreds of thousands of unique scenarios and experiences. That is the reason I love arma though for people who are used to stuff like squad with its standardised gamemodes I get why they may struggle to understand it.

I agree with what you said but ARMA has a high sealing of entry compared to games like Squad. Most people don't have time to explore the infinite possibilities when learning the game enough to just start playing takes long hours. Compared to that you can just download Squad and pop into a game.

My man if you want to find enemies and do some shooting you should try the conflict game mode in reforger. As for the time spent in-menu and waiting to join server: all I can say is that the total time spent in reforger waiting to join server and setting up kit is comparable and quite often significantly shorter than the wait to join a good squad server especially since you only have to create a kit once per server.
Sorry, i know that you probably know this, but i have to say it: the first Arma game is "Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis", later renamed "Arma: Cold War Assault" (even if it had a different name, due to legal reasons, it's exactly the same, apart from graphics). It was a completely innovative/visionary/ambitious game for its time. And even with all its flaws and the hard access to its gameplay, i just can't avoid the unique feel this franchise still has, different from other milsims (that i also play).
For the full multiplayer experience, i recommend joining a community/unit (it also depends on which type of teamwork you look for). They will help you to make the game more accessible.
And a very unpopular oppinion, that not many people will agree with, but: i love the official story campaigns and the Armaverse lore. They are hard and glitched, but they're an emotional experience that Call of Duty will never give you; even with moments of similarities (ex: stealth; secret conspiracies).
You get to do missions of regular infantry; special forces; armoured vehicles; helicopters and jets; doing sabotage; sniping; being captured and escaping; surviving alone in enemy territory; directing airstrikes; using drones; commanding troops or vehicles; doing recon; patrolling; fighting with nightvision; guerrilla warfare and gathering supplies; retreating; watching the map change through the campaign development; constantly making choices that affect the future missions and the ending...
Even hunting mines and reconstructing history ("Remnants of War" DLC) or making contact with aliens ("Contact" DLC). Or sometimes living as a civilian (different moments from different campaigns).
Arma games stories r based af. Moreover they literally predicted the Ukraine conflict in Arma 2 lol
@@oort84 Yeah, i think that whoever writes the campaigns is such a master! And i couldn't find anything THAT specific, but clues about the main screenwriter/storywriter of the main campaigns being the CEO of Bohemia.

It actually started with Operation Flashpoint. I bought ARMA3, because I thought they had gotten rid of all the jank. I was wrong.
Maybe Reforger is gonna be the miracle everyone has been waiting for. If it is, I'll give BI my money.
Arma, despite being a niche milsim game, has always been a pretty important part of gaming since through Arma 2's DayZ we got quite a lot of survival games (Rust lists it as inspiration) and through DayZ Battle Royale it helped inspire a lot of games. Player Unknown of PUBG fame got his start making DayZ Battle Royale.
It's all super dependent on finding servers making use of the creativity it allows. It honestly sounds like the server you guys joined was pretty good with god/"Zeus" (the Arma 3 term) making things on the fly and helping out. Don't forget your map though. It's quite easy to get lost in the beauty of reforger's maps, literally and metaphorically.

Barracks simulator as well. You either drive or stare at your inventory in your reforger 🤣 but those rare moments that you prepare for, are usually very worth it (unless you ride over a mine after 20 minutes of navigating around)

Reforger is awesome, but there's so many bugs that drive me nuts I had to step away from it. The more you get into it, the more it starts to chafe.

@@glennpeterson1357 I only got into it a few weeks ago. Kept running into situations where I was invincible or the person I was shooting was. Not to mention the supply system being bugged every time I used it.

That was a fun one SLogs. When the game works it is fun. When you get low server FPS and end up using a mag to kill one NPC and get killed in return, that is when i refunded it. Was like 2 months ago.

Well you’re in luck slorg. Arma has decided to not be hardcore anymore and has now instead decided to be as casual as possible. This should prove to no longer be and issue anymore
Hopefully arma4 is hardcore, that’s part of the charm of the game.

@LakevusParadice i’d say the game went casual at Arma 3, mods are what grounded it in reality and realism. The community sculpted the game into the milsim they wanted, or anything they wanted really. Arma to me is a platform, where you build it into what you wish, much like what the community had done so many times before.
Arma will always be Arma - you can be as hardcore or softcore as you like

I was in a Arma 3 clan for a little bit until Squad came out. Squad provided the squad and platoon tactics I wanted without the tons of mods and waiting around for people to show up to a op or training session. I would still be interested in playing Arma 4 in the future, mostly for as a benchmark.

This was genuinely hilarious to watch and editing was fire! Captures the best bits of gaming with mates. Hop on WCS servers some time and people will help you with getting the basics down. I think most people find one or two servers and then regularly play on there, where you’ll then encounter the same players and hook up with people

Yeah, for Arma you kinda need to check stuff out first, learn some basics (because Reforger doesnt have a tutorial really) and then check out what you actually want to play.
Of course the Server Browser shows you all.
After you know what you want (and what its called), you can choose your favourite server again and play.. jumping blindly into Arma.. not that useful. Its a sandbox and you just wont know whats in it and how much sand you are getting in your shoes.
I've played ArmA nearly my whole life starting with Cold War Crisis as a kid, and the first 2 minutes of the video don't really describe my experience with the game at ALL lol. Yes I've used and played with mods... but ultra serious? Planning games months ahead? Was never part of any "unit" or played in any milsim events or took it super duper serious. At it's heart, it's a very customizable and open sandbox that you can essentially turn into anything you want. For the better part of my time playing ArmA, they've been vanilla or with light mods that just add better souds, new terrains, or new factions (and a little bit of ACE too). In my opinion, ArmA is best with a small group of friends playing a custom mission you made, or on the Project Reality-inspired servers that used to be Tactical Battlefield and EUTW. There are a lot of controls and menus I guess... but I never saw that as complex. Take a couple minutes to learn them and it's not really that bad, althought I may be a bit biased on this as I've played ArmA since childhood and love complex sim-type games.

I love reforger, especially some of the modded servers, there’s a good mix of serious tactical players and people running around in underwear blasting fortunate son while launching rockets off into the trees just to hit a friendly squad while one helicopter does the smoothest j turn landing you’ll ever see and one spinning on the ground upside down missing it’s tail rotor
And some servers have a different inventory system so you don’t have to use the godawful one the game comes with

You definitely should take a look at Ironbeard's Seize & Secure mod which is basically Project Reality for Reforger and it's immensely underrated

best way to experience arma reforger is just to be an idiot if you want actions try out the vietnam server or insurgency servers most the maps are smaller for insurgency so it leads to more combat

No, the first game was the Operation Flashpoint and later the game was renamed to Arma due to selling naming rights to Codemasters
You even scrolled over the map lol. It's a good game it just need some more work. Like with any game that has community servers, some are better than others. I do hope you play more of it 🤙

I'm like you when it comes to games like these, except I think Arma is awesome because of how moddable it is and the fact that it has singleplayer and coop. I gathered a group of about 8-10 friends last year and we hosted a private server on Arma 3 playing Antistasi gamemode with the radio mod. OMFG it was the most fun I've had in a milsim in like, ever. The biggest issues in these milsim games, aside from the jank and realism-playability balance, are the language barrier of the playerbase and server availability in some regions. I'm in southeast Asia and my options are Chinese servers that sure as hell doesn't have anyone who speaks english, Aussie servers that aren't very populated and pretty bad ping, and Indonesian servers that exist once in a blue moon. Over the years there are more people playing these games but it's still not as intuitive for players like me would've liked.

Steam says Ive got around 8,000 hours in vanilla Arma3.
My PC will remain mod free. I dont need the hassle that mods bring.

if youre looking for something more similar to squad content WCS servers are your best bet, as mentioned getting into a server is frustrating and a que system would be an amazing quality of life change to the game. honestly its great fun when you get the hang of it, i went from arma 3 to squad and now back to arma with reforger. Definitely not a game you just jump into and wing it with though.

Being a fucking "boomer" that is playing CoD1 when it released back in 2003 and at an age of 13 and somewhat seeing how FPS genre has evolved over the years, I want to say that I think that for tactical FPS shooters there was no other way than to have it that first ARCADE FPS shooters got a strong hold over the market, got noticed and became kind of gamer-favorite genre - on the other hand I cannot help but feel like that tactical FPS shooters are still in their early stages so as to become new/advanced/seasoned player friendly, with intuitive game mechanics, UI, controls, etc. This comes from someone who has sunk only 20 hours into Squad, about 7 into Hell Let Loose and about a hundred or more in all of ArmA games - the next top tier contender is gonna take the best off of all the games combined and improve on it massively (hopefully) and focus on NOT top tier graphics, but rather performance, I just feel like that tactical shooters are quite bottlenecked as a genre due to FPS games being demanded to have oh so top notch graphics, which is imho something that mainstream arcade FPS games have pretty much ruined.
