The plugin industry has very well understood what makes people buy their stuff: make stuff that look vintage and “analog” bcz that’s the thing their missing in their home setup! When in reality the algorithms behind them is almost the same!!! Add harmonics roll off some highs or boost some lows and call it a new replica!!!
In my opinion this plugin came at the right moment and for me it is perfect. I have a lot of tape simulations, but in the free domain nothing compares to this. The only free option could be CHOW Tape Model, but the learning curve is pretty high, especially when you have to delivery something fast, or you are in the middle of the creative process: I just put this plugin freshly installed on my master bus and everything instantly sounded kinda magic. No tweaking, no settings, just perfect. I know that I will lose that bit that comes with play with complex staff, but probably I would just have to deal with them for 10 minutes to get a similar sound; but just because this sound is the best in my case!
I hear ya. I've tried CHOW Tape Model and it just doesn't sound legit to my ears. Verve sounds well in the park of legit and the A800 is VERY legit. My opinion of course.
The “Sweeten” is pretty good for shaping heavy metal guitar tones to sit in a mix. It replaced my plugin chain and all I add is a little eq after and cut down on time by 95%
little known fact: Darude is actually an industry plant, put in place to create sandstorm, in order to have white sea studio test new plugins on, spreading the word of the plugin and encouraging users to trial new plugins, eventually leading to them buying said plugins. I know this for a FACT, because i accidentally stumbled upon the Big Plugin Corporation Major Retreat at Bohemian Grove. Darude was front and center, right underneath the big owl, djing a 24 hour set of only Sandstorm. He was surrounded by executives from Universal Audio, SSL, Plugin Boutique, OekSound, Sonible, Waves, even Acustica Audio !!! Scary stuff!! remember where your money is going, next time you buy a plugin. Not everything is as it seems on the surface.
mad fav uad tape emulation has to be the oxide tape machine, it can really bring things a lot more in front just by putting it on the master alone, ive played around with the studer one and its also neat but i much prefer the oxide one, mainly cuz its ccir curve is like magic as far as presence goes
Grabbed the free version. Neat flavours, but it‘ll be up against a lot of other options. It’s simplicity and well tuned range of sound is its strength IMHO. I have a lot of stuff I use already though. Analog Obsession has a good range of flavoring boxes too. Simplicity and speed usually makes the difference(right after sound). I‘ll have to wait and see.
The free version is more practical in what I would use it for. All of the overly distorted stuff is a little too over the top for me. A Wet/Dry knob would've been super useful though.
I own so many UAD plugins. 3 apollos and love all of them. But the essentials is worth 25 bucks 50 at most and the full versions is 50 to 75 no more. Its a simple bare bones clippee with shaping and a generic eq or warbler effect
Just downloaded free version. For $99 or $199 its a no, PLUS you could have gotten UAD Essentials that included Studer for $49 at Plugin Boutique. They still have that deal but with Oxide Tape instead.
Do you mean these analog machines? The IK plugs are more similar to the UA’s Oxide/Studer/Ampex tape emulations in terms of functions, capability and learning curve IMHO. For what it’s worth I have them all they are all great (as is Softube Tape) and each company’s suites can produce top class results if you put in the hours to understand their features and best usage. I tend to use Softube Tape and the UA stuff (particularly Oxide) the most - rarely reach for the IK but got it for nothing in one of their mega group buys. IK still great stuff but I haven’t put in the hours to really know them all and have no need to. Also +1 for RC20 as a general analog-sim-flava-box. I doubt I would find any use for these Analog Machines but will load the freebie onto my system for kicks.
3:33 I actually kind of appreciate that they left the output gain missing in the essential version. It's the exactly correct omission to encourage people to go to the full version. They know. Smart.
Couldn't tell you how many UAD plugins I paid $100-$125 for on sale (from $300). Of course, now, I am seeing the same ones in a $49 bundle, costing a few bucks apiece. And I bought the powered plugins which they have done nothing with, since turning to the non-native format. And that was after going from 32-bit to 64-bit. From here on, I just wait on all of this stuff, as I typically do not need anything right away. 🤔
If something is snake-oil, it's this thing. Except...I kinda like it. It's just set it and forget it and it sounds great. The lite version free for everyone for a while, just grab it. 199 bucks is way to expensive for the full version though, 99 is more in line. But, everyone who WILL buy this thing will just buy this thing at a sale sometime anyway.
It is just a distortion box with coloring types of distorted signature type sounds. To me I believe tape is like tube very special and overrated. It is mostly too much. And yes there is gear that make some kind of shine or crisp to the sound. But if you never heard it you can't understand it. Ears and exp. Makes it sound better than without. That plug in would be a choice for vocals and guitars. Not for master. Perfect to get a recognized distortion to a specific instrument in the mix. Perhaps to help focus on the sound. But there are plug in that are better >saturn and way more professional.
I am old, have bad ears, and just like to program and play synths for the most part as a hobby. If everything above the Warm setting sounds like someone farting into a cheap microphone plugged into an old cassette recorder with a blown mono speaker to me, I can't imagine it sounds good to anyone else. Does it? Or does it just sound like unpleasant distortion? It doesn't sound like one of my tube guitar amps (also play guitar) breaking up, overdriving in good crunchiness, or going into liquid lead higher gain territory.
Pitch effect is very cool. I have uad spark so I don’t care about the price...got it “for free”. Generally very nice quality of distortion...I could replace with it my studer plugin easily. Sounds great on anything.
Snake oil. 2 controls? I believe you get this only free, if you buy some other ridiculous thing. Warble, warmth, distortion? Gsatplus may be older, its a decent free vst, lots of control, add odd/even harmonics in broad or subtle ways. Warble is free with Kilohearts 'tape stop' and several js effects in Reaper or add radical tempo or stretch markers etc...
1) On the Plugin Boutique stream today, I asked several times if this was using plugins that I already owned, like the Studer, Oxide, Sound City, Capital Chambers and the 22 plugins that came in the producer bundle that I bought from UA. I asked several times, but they didn't answer this, but looking at the video and seeing the Studer an possible some other ones in there it would appear so. 2) @White Sea how do you rank/compare UA to Softube? I find both of them to be great. Tape VST is my go-to out of all the tape emulation plugins and I love its presets, including 70's OVU, Bass Push, Drum Buss, and some of the other presets. I like the UAD Studer and Oxide as well, but for whatever reason I love the Softube, which factors in those REALLY good presets.
@@jocke1972 honestly, I’m not mad at it. It's a great tool for those who want an easy workflow- but having vague names like "fire" doesn't encourage people to learn about audio engineering/mixing in a meaningful way. For $199 you can have 10 months of their Spark subscription, and learn about how classic studio hardware colors your mixes. You could then apply that knowledge if you ran into the hardware units in real life to make an educated choice when recording/mixing!
Arturia gave away their tape plugin some time ago and it's great (less sounds but much more controls), so I'm wondering if I need another freebie like that. Sounds good though.
I purchased three UA-Plugins, without knowing that they require either an iLok-dongle or the equivalent PACE-Software (which not only occipies 1 GB of the HDD, but also will permanetly connect to the Internet). Well, I do not know, whether this new plugin can be used without that cudgel, but if so, you have to buy a 60$ dongle or you loose control over your computer due to PACE. I tried using the "essentials" version on a send (i.e. in parallel) and got phasing on all the models except "sweeten". Does the full version do this also? I suspect the different models have different latencies which are not getting reported to the DAW (other than the first "sweeten" model). I suspect that UA made it this way to avoid an interruption in the sound when you switch between models. I'm just curious if this phase problem also occurs in the full version.
I had this issue too. The phasing must be some tape modulation algorithm waving on those other 3 models. I wish we could control it. If the paid version can turn off the wobble 100% then it shouldn't be an issue.
@@clydesapere1977 Yes, you are correct. I'm currently demo'ing the paid version and when the "wobble control" is turned all the way down the phasing goes away. 👍
I am so bored with distortion plugins. Can someone please make a plugin to selectively remove various different orders of harmonics, or artfully fill-IN the clipped portion? Ohhhh ........, it's too hard to make that.
def agree with you that theres too much choice. probably could have cut out the four "beige" ones and kept the colorful orange and blue ones with more controls
I'm not one to pass up a free offer (as it can serve as a stepping stone for better things if needed), but I am not interested in getting the full version at this time.
As much as I'm happy about UAD releasing their plugins Natively, they still come across as a sleezy company sometimes. It almost seems like they're releasing this little plugin rather than continuing to put more branded plugins in their Spark Subscription.
I think they would like to put out more branded plugins, but there might be licensing issues. In times when they made contracts with all those brands they might have signed a contract to release them only as DSP.
@@hlgrf8876I agree with you, that's definitely what it seems like; BUT I would imagine they'd see this coming. They're probably trying to find a way to keep making a lot of money while also giving the people what they want. Not sure, just what it comes across as.
Ironically the Essentials version is missing some things that are really essential in my opinion, a simple output and an input button (and a mix button would also be welcome). The lack of these simple controls instantly makes it unusable for my workflow.
Sometimes the simplicity of having fewer options is a good thing, but for $200 I would expect more control. UAD seem to have followed that annoying plugin manufacturers’ marketing technique of a very high RRP with regular sales, $50 vouchers and bundle deals to bring it down to an acceptable price. Just price the thing fairly already! I feel sorry for the people who get caught out by this and pay far too much. Grrr! 🤪

Yo, heads up I'm ordering something from Thomann soon so I went and clicked on the affiliate link and it gave me: page not found/Unfortunately, you used an old or broken link.
Don’t wait for others to tell you if it’s good or not. Some like it, some don’t. Truth is there’s no good or bad plugin. Try it, UAD offers a demo for every plugin. If you like what you hear and if you think « uh, I’d like to use this on my music », then it’s good for you.
Basically the cost of UA plugins are $100 for 2, at most. This is the price you could acquire them quite regularly. And then of course there are always time around Black Friday.
I clicked on the plugins link and it doesn't seem to be free and its only April 15th. You said free for month of April??? UPDATE: OK I found it, its not obvious at first, you have to know to scroll to the bottom of the page and then it shows a free essential version. Weird.

I have to call snake oil. I tend to like UAD, but I would not even waste my hard drive space or internet speed for this. They are not even trying at this point.
The sound did not convince me. Very flat sounding. Also a bit harsh. Maybe aliasing? What’s missing is the typical depth you get from tape sound. It’s nice to see free plugins from UAD. But the sound is not good.
It's so funny to me that the same people who will buy a single Neve Pre-amp plugin or some licensed compressor plugin from UAD for $200+ are here saying "yeah this just doesn't seem worth $99 to me, idk." LMAOOO

@@perhoier2881 When I purchased those UA plugins, it was not communicated that I need either a dongle or a spy-software. This ia oe point I critizies. But even more, both the UA- and iLok-software permanently try to connect to the internet. Which is a PITA, because my studio computer is not connected. I dislike it, that at a "free" plugin, but even more on products I paid for.
I avoid UA and warn everybody about that unpleasant behaviour.
Other companies, like Klevgrand or Melda and many more, make good plugins and do NOT treat their customers as if they were pirating.
Thx for your patience.

Yeah, I'll try the Essentials version but I'd rather use IK's Tape plugins. They're elite.
Hey remember when UAD were a relevant plugin maker..i don't even want this AND it's free 🤣
Thanks for the review
It’s not free my friend we pay a subscription !
But it’s nice to have more for the same price !
Nice for my first sony
I am so bored with distortion plugins. Can someone please make a plugin to selectively remove various different orders of harmonics, or artfully fill-IN the clipped portion? Ohhhh ........, it's too hard to make that.
nothing you cannot do with the hundreds of tape- and saturation plugins already available. and the gui is almost ridiculous...
this is pretty cool. decapitator challenger
def agree with you that theres too much choice. probably could have cut out the four "beige" ones and kept the colorful orange and blue ones with more controls
is it really free or does it require that anti-consumer protection racket mafia also known as ilok?
I'm not one to pass up a free offer (as it can serve as a stepping stone for better things if needed), but I am not interested in getting the full version at this time.
Oversampling?
Do you have a code or how i can get it for free??
How come the Dutch play American music SO well?!
Amazing sounding track, White Sea!
Sounds more classic 90s English.
How much would u charge to mix a song
Grrr! 🤪
really hope UA doesnt abandon their typical attention to detail and realistically modeled analog gear in favour of these mojo box baby audio type things....
a little cool, but totaly agree with your saying in 3:39 ;)
how the heck did you connect the SSL controllers? LOL. I didn't think they locked in.
He 3d-printed a connection for the bottom
Yo, heads up I'm ordering something from Thomann soon so I went and clicked on the affiliate link and it gave me: page not found/Unfortunately, you used an old or broken link.
The drive knob literally seemed to make no difference. I only heard the difference from switching to the different analog machines
Snake oil
beware of the too cool graphics instead of effort on sound
Graphics are pretty good. They should fly s Phillips head in and open the box and show the all the electronics inside.
Very nice
Here we gooooooo!
can someone confirm if this plugin is good? everyone's making a video about so I'm guessing the company is promoting the plugin
Don’t wait for others to tell you if it’s good or not. Some like it, some don’t. Truth is there’s no good or bad plugin.
Try it, UAD offers a demo for every plugin. If you like what you hear and if you think « uh, I’d like to use this on my music », then it’s good for you.
Already have the Slate VTR and all the superb IK Multimedia tape plugins so will give it a miss, but not bad for free. 😎
I love the IK ones. Use them all the time.
Affiliate link not working!
For 99 bugs I got 20 Pokemon booster packs as well.. holy shit what should I do?!?.. 😂
Hi cool Video but the Plugin is not free !
Too bad the setting isnt kept between modes
Basically the cost of UA plugins are $100 for 2, at most. This is the price you could acquire them quite regularly. And then of course there are always time around Black Friday.
I clicked on the plugins link and it doesn't seem to be free and its only April 15th. You said free for month of April???
UPDATE: OK I found it, its not obvious at first, you have to know to scroll to the bottom of the page and then it shows a free essential version. Weird.
Wish UAD more of a cut on the “extended” edition of the plugin, but you can never have too many free plug-ins. Great video and concise review! 🎚️
I allready have all my virtual analog needs covered. Still waiting for affordable quality real analog though. 🤔
And they're selling this shit... RRP $199? lmao ... gimme a break,, just get some airwindows plugins and it shits on this...
lol so true
Holy balls, you opened a door into a very interesting universe with this. Anyone who, like me, doesn't know about airwindows, google it this damn moment
Ever heard oh u he satin lol.
Feels a bit like a cash grab, but since the essentials is free might as well add it to my saturation plugins
This is not free. There's just a free 30 day trial.
another eq saturation plug in! am done with buyin plug ins! i nedd to make money out of this, not spending more money , memory and ram!
UA puts out a free plugin... yep, that's exactly what it's worth.
with this thumbnail is almost impossible to dont click... haha
Airwindows is his daddy
I have to call snake oil. I tend to like UAD, but I would not even waste my hard drive space or internet speed for this. They are not even trying at this point.
The sound did not convince me. Very flat sounding. Also a bit harsh. Maybe aliasing?
What’s missing is the typical depth you get from tape sound.
It’s nice to see free plugins from UAD. But the sound is not good.
Free? Yes.

It's so funny to me that the same people who will buy a single Neve Pre-amp plugin or some licensed compressor plugin from UAD for $200+ are here saying "yeah this just doesn't seem worth $99 to me, idk." LMAOOO
You almost never say at the end if you really liked a plugin or if you recommend getting it (regardless of the price). Or at least it feels like that. Nice show though.
It no longer appears to be free. At least not from your affiliate link.
