My leftovers go into the freezer that night. At the end of the week I pull the compatible leftovers out and put them in a pot with chicken broth. A chicken leg here, a pork chop there. Leftover corn, green beans, peas, doesn't matter it goes in the pot. Ive never had a bad pot and it doesn't really matter what you put in. Once it all cooks together, its the best meal of the week.
Two nights ago...chicken broth (boiled leftover $5.00 Sams roasted chicken) three leftover chicken thighs, half bag left over baby carrots, half package fresh mushrooms (fresh is stretching it), a chopped onion, and rice...
That's a great idea! It's similar to your Noodle Soup in a jar, in that you can add the meat and bouillon/broth of your choice. Conversely, I have made soup extender in jars. That helps you add more nutrition/servings on the fly. It has pearled barley, lentils, rice, macaroni, split peas, and onion flakes in it (equal amounts of each), and all you need is a cup to extend any soup or stew.
@sherihicks1427. What a great idea on the soup extender. Here's my question ... how much additional broth/stock/water would I add to my regular soup recipe to account for 1C of the mix? I don't cook with dry legumes very often. Thanks!
@@pamskinner9490 I don't know, Pam. I usually just add what I think will do it, and then watch and stir, adding more if it gets too thick. I'm not real precise😂 And, it might only need more water, not necessarily more broth. Kind of up to you.
Most grains need 3 to 4 times more liquid than the amount of the original grains. Rice is a 2 to 1 ratio, but that is just for the rice, no broth for the soup.
I never thought to use my dried/dehydrated food to make soup starters. It looks so easy and a time saver when it’s needed. Thank you so much for the awesome idea. Take care.
I wonder if making up little spice jars this way would work too. Make up your chicken stock spice jar or you beef stew spice jar. Grab your soup starter mix. Decide which meat you want to use then grab your spice mix and just pour it in. Those baby food mason jars would work great for your soup spice starter jars.
Great to have on the shelf. I'm going to mix up some of the "cream of something" soup base too. My son just bought me a dehydrator. I need to get busy & use it.
Great! Thank you for sharing more of these jar meals. I have made MANY dried meals in a jar, but I never thought about a soup starter. So glad you shared this. God bless! LOVE your shirt!
Great idea! My sister will be getting out of the hospital on Saturday so I can mix up a few of these for her so she can have soup when she wants it! Thanks for this!
LOVE this idea! I have LOTS of broth in the pantry that we just don't use as fast as we should, and lots of leftover bits of pasta and dehydrated veggies. Soup always seems like a lot of work for just the 2 of us, but this would make it super easy. I'll be making a bunch of these over the weekend!
I also do this with last years dried fruit and herb teas... mix them all up together making a superfood blend and use up first. I dry rose petal, lavender, mint, lemon balm, strawberry leaves etc each year.
This is down-to-earth and practical. What a great way to use up odds and ends in the pantry and at the same time give yourself a break with meal prep. It's especially soothing for those of us who hate wasting food, and so have to live with the clutter. Thank you. It's what we need these days.
I love this idea...I have lots of dehydrated veggies in the pantry and it would take up less room if I made up soup mixes and was able to empty some of the veggie specific jars.
Hey Jeni! Because I make my Dog Food… I started using QUINOA… instead of rice (Diabetic Dog). The Quinoa is great to add to your Soup Jars too! I’m not a real fan of Kale… unless I’m making ZUPPA TOSCANA. But you can grind up that dried kale into POWDER and add to smoothies
This is such a great idea. I’m always looking for lunch ideas for myself, but not really wanting to go to a lot of trouble. I love soup, and I have a lot of dehydrated veggies on hand, so this couldn’t be more perfect for me. Thanks for the idea. I know what I’ll be doing tomorrow! 😊
Hi Jinne, thank you for doing this video. I can now easily do this because I have enough variety of freeze dried foods from Thrive Life. Plus I'm going to be getting a vacuum sealer. I'm finding it quite fun to see what I can do with freeze dried foods. And even more fun is planning on what to buy next.
I found your channel last night and am so inspired to finally get started (stealing your ideas)!! This is absolutely perfect for a beginner. I have mason jars and other canning equipment that have been sitting in my pantry for a year now, but I got to feeling overwhelmed and self-doubt got the best of me that I haven't done anything with it. Meals in jars are a perfect way to ease in. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing!
Love this! I love that you can make them to what you like and you could measure if you want to but don't have to. Thanks Jinne! PS I'm definitely going to get some dessicants to add to my dehydrated food.
WOW, That's great, so happy to hear this, I'm always trying to use up odds and ends, I cook the same and taught my Granddaughter to do that and she really liked adding whatever she likes, Thank you
This is really an awesome idea. So simple but I watched your video and had a ‘light bulb’ moment. I’ve got everything dehydrated or freeze-dried separately but I can put it together and make ready to go soup meals. Thanks so much!
Love this idea...thanks for your video. I made up a beef barley soup for supper with frozen veggies. I will dehydrate a bag to put in jars soon as i replace my dehydrator which picked this moment of inspiration to croak. Cant complain tho, bought at a thrift store 10 years ago or more.
An excellent idea. I tend to make a mix of dried grains, pulses, dried garlic, onion, herbs, and sometimes chili. Then when I want to use them add boiling water and let them hydrate as a soup base. I've never added dried veg before as I usually have stuff growing in the garden, but certainly a good addition.
I'm still catching up on your videos! Last year we freeze dried our version of mirepoix using the last of our garden harvest: onions, bell peppers, carrots, celery, and a little garlic. It sounds perfect for soup starter in a jar! Per husband's tastes, I'm also thinking freeze dried cabbage, tomatoes, mixed vegetables, and potato dices (and sneak in some spinach - haha). Now I need to see if I have lentils! Thank you 🙂
Good morning, what a fantastic idea! I was thinking that this would be good for a stuffing or you could use this as a filler for meatloaf or something like that! Thank you so much, this was very inspiring! Love soup!
Thank you for this. I went on a dehydrating craze last summer and I have yet to use any of it. Now I will put some jars on the shelf with the soup ready to go. Again thanks!
Great idea and I enjoyed watching. I would love to do something similar without the freeze-dried/dehydrated as I don't have the time/inclination to do those methods of preserving and I don't see these sold here in Canada. That said, the rest of the stuff in these would work even if I had to do fresh vegetables at the time of cooking. It takes a few minutes to peel and dice. Thanks for showing this!
Ugh, I am not all one who can just add stuff…I have to measure and follow a recipe. I am starting to branch out and be more free with it but just can’t quite do it yet. I will save video and attempt this this fall, hopefully we’ll have a good garden this year, it’ll only our second attempt and I am in my mid 50’s.
Great video, Jinne. I'm looking for a dehydrator on Marketplace so i can make this. What is the name of that jar sealing thing you have? Thank you, my New England sister!
I’m very new to your channel & just starting to try canning etc. how do I know when dehydrating my vegetables that they are done enough to use in this way. I’m afraid to leave too much moisture or over dry. Again I’m new just got a dehydrator
The squash bugs really kill off my yellow squash, they seem to find it no matter where I move it in my yard and what bug killer I try to kill them with . I live in Kansas, do you have any secrets in keeping them away or killing them. Thanks

I just made 12 quarts of this soup starter this afternoon. I live alone so it last me awhile.thank you for this video.

What a great idea! You still need to write that cookbook girl! I love your channel. ❤️
Great! Thank you for sharing more of these jar meals. I have made MANY dried meals in a jar, but I never thought about a soup starter. So glad you shared this. God bless! LOVE your shirt!

I save and reuse the descants/moisture absorbers that are in medication bottles….. another creative and helpful video! Thanks😊
Great ideas and tips! I did not know that you could dry the silica packets. Thank you for sharing!

I made several jar soup ups called friendship soup from Christmas gifts. Wonderful ideas.
I love your jar meal idea! It uses what you have on hand and no measuring which is a win in my book! Great video!
Made a Basil Lasagne Soup by breaking up Lasagne noodles, adding dehydrated veggies, chicken broth and a jar of Basil Alfredo It was soooo good.
Hi can oh share your recipe? Thanks

Another great idea to have on the Shelf.
Food Grade Dessicants can be purchased & reused.
Thanks for the idea. Now I know what to do with my corn. When I am having a bad day, I dehydrate a pack of frozen veggies.

Lord Jenni you sure put the hamster on the wheel with this video!! Tomorrow I'll be making soup base 😊
Genius, thank you!
Can you vacuum pack these in vacuum bags instead of jars?
Love this❤❤❤❤❤
Great video!❤
What a great idea,.once you vacuum seal them how low will they last on the shelf. I’m an elder and, don’t know how long I should to keep.
Ten years.
I love this channel ❤️
Excellent!😊
How about washing the rice and lentils?
I love these vids you do. Thanks..
Great idea Jinne!!! 😊

Can I mix freeze dried and dehydrated veggies?
❤this how long is the shelf life

How long will the soup starters be good for?
It depends on the ingredients. Dehydrated food lasts about 5 years, but freeze-dried will usually last 20 years.
Great stuff thanks
Love this, thank you❤❤❤
The colors showing through the glass remind me of stained glass.
Great video!
Great ideas!
very good video! thanks!
