Love my long hair dachshund babies - always fun to explain to people why their personality is the way it is “look they were bred to out-stubborn a badger, and bark loud enough to be heard when they’re way down in the burrow. Expecting them to be quiet and obedient is just not going to go well for either of us 😂”

I always tell people that there are certain breeds that don't make good pets for most people, but weirdly they are some of my favorite ones. Dachshunds and Chihuahuas are on that list along with German shepherds and a large variety of Asian spits. All dogs are good provided we can give them what they need, and little dogs need structure and security. Lot of people don't give enough structure and then you get a neurotic nightmare. I do personally wonder though if some of the snippiness in Dachshunds come from back pain. I've heard a lot of stories of ones that only get bitey if people try to pick them up and to me that is a back problem red flag.
My absolute favorite breeds though are the ones that are highly independent and stubborn so I like a lot of the bully breeds I just wish they didn't have the short noses and in the case of pit bulls, excessively high energy and exercise needs😂 I'll take a chow potato that isn't as good with kids over the indestructible kid proof pity personally any day but for people who can give them energy those are going to win most of the time.

@@darcieclements4880 how did you know I also have chihuahuas? 😂 The bitey thing is territorial for mine. He gets nippy if strange people are around “his” territory (his house, his yard, wherever he’s sitting…) - it’s something we’ve tried to work on with him but he was literally rescued from a dumpster twelve years ago, so there’s only so much I can do to reprogram his tiny brain, bless his sweet heart.

As someone who loves anything dog behavior, health, trivia related and is also a MAJOR wildlife nerd the Badger hunting fact is one that makes me just go "Yup, makes sense" 🤣 Would love to see more of these videos! They're super fun!

Plus, Dachs means badger in German, which makes even more sense 😉 Dachshund literally means badger-dog

I LOVE DACHSHUNDS!!! My first childhood dog was a dachshund. He lived for 17.5 years and passed away in March 2024 💔
It's so incredible how dachshunds were so carefully crafted to hunt badgers.

A specialist once assured me spinal surgery on my Border Collie would be safe & that he did eight successful ops per week. As an aside he added, "Six of them are usually Dachshunds".

I have my own wiener dog, she’s quite the character. Just turned 2 years old and all attitude (stubborn, but she after AKC puppy and adult classes, she got her Canine Good Citizen certification). We have ramps to enable her to get in the bed or on furniture. She goes upstairs by herself, we carry her downstairs. You didn’t mention how notoriously difficult they are to train to do their business outside, we ended up improvising by making two enclosed indoor latrines, complete with pee pad tray and pee pads. (She likes to do her business in private, we take her outside and she refuses to go. She goes outside for the dog sitter - go figure).
Oops, I went a little wordy here. I was trying to say dachshunds are loving, stubborn and too flipping smart for their own good. But they make excellent service dogs if trained, mine is in training now.

Please try to avoid your dachshund going upstairs alone frequently, it is also bad for her spine.
The little ramps part was so adorable :)

Dachshunds are the most bipolar dogs. Their two modes are cuddlebug and “EVERYONE MUST DIE.” I knew two. One NEEDED to be playing fetch at all times, no rest. Stamina of a border collie, but it had to be fetch. Her brother was a gremlin who hated EVERYONE, even bit me. But if I stuck around, he’d snuggle up and demand cuddles.
You also forgot to mention they NEED to dig. A lot. Get ready for some twisted ankles after stepping in some random holes. This is why they may not be good for people with larger dogs in the house. The big boys WILL fall in the holes and cause back problems (ask me how I know).

Just got knee surgery on my rescue cat. She’s a tabby shorthair and has both knees floating. Vet can’t get the knees to go back into place anymore. So I got her first (and worst) knee done. She’s recovering well from the surgery, but I wouldn’t want any further baby to have to go through this issue! Thanks for the video Dr!

As someone who loves the breed but also acknowledges their health issues, the number one thing a dachshund owner can do for their dog is learn how to keep their backs strong and healthy. That means doing your best to not let them become seriously overweight, and setting up ramps or soft stairs up to any pieces of furniture they like to be on so they don't have to jump.
Now, will the little jerks probably jump anyways? Absolutely.
Second most important thing is to properly socialize them from a young age. Dachshunds have a reputation for aggressiveness, and it is not undeserved. Socializing them with people and other dogs from the time they're small helps a lot to curb that.
Third and final, understand that training will be... Interesting. Dachshunds can be INCREDIBLY stubborn little brats, however, training does become easier once you understand that Dachshunds don't work for free. You can say a command they've done a hundred times perfectly, but if the Dachshund knows there's nothing in it for them to obey, you can actively see the little wheels turning in their heads and them thinking "Why should I?"
As cute as they are, and as loyal and loving as they can be with their person, they aren't the easiest breed to keep or train, and not one I would recommend for first time dog owners.

I actually already knew that they were bred to hunt badgers. Diana Gabaldon is 1 of my favorite authors, and 1 of her books has a German lord who breeds dachshunds. I think it said dachshund literally means badger dog.
I Googled it to see if that was true and also found out that they're called dackles in Germany. Which I kinda wish would catch on here too.

I have a mix one (mini)sl she's also mixed with min pin and she's amazing and sweet and acts as a not trained guide and alert dog (hard to explain) but she knows how to help without being trained to do so I brush her teeth and 1 vet says she has the best teeth he's seen for her age I also brush my other 2 dogs' teeth but my chihuahua's teeth don't look too good or as clean and idk what I'm doing wrong I was told by 2 vets she gas the knee issue after she got a broken leg then another vet said "no she doesn't" so that's confusing and she has allergies needs injections now and then but all my dogs do they get itchy with allergies so they get sreroids and cytopoint but again it doesn't help my chihuahua as much

I have a doxie/lab cross. All of the spice, tenacity and prey drive of the doxie, with the inappropriate eating habits of the lab.
She's cost me a fortune in vet bills. 😂😬

    Bagers!? Wow!!! 😮
I grew up with standard size dachshunds hotdogs. They would hunt catfish in the stock pond. 😅😅
Bellyflop on those rascals. Swim after them so fiercely 😅😅😅 pfffft.
They were all muscle. 98% lean hot doggies

I grew up with Doxies and they are still spicy. The mail persons are a favorite victim of theirs.
