I recently bought a very good OIII filter for my telescope (8"). When I first looked at the veil nebula my jaw dropped. It just shows so much Detail vs being completely invisible without filter. It's a must have for every visual observer!

Great vid and I love the end products! I enjoy the DSLR vids the best. I think it's the balance of auto-technology vs hands-on that draws me to these particular vids. All your videos are great, but these are the first among equals. I really enjoy your channel. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

APT is awesome, and pointcraft in apt is really awesome. I know you know about plate solving, but it's so awesome in APT, you can click "show" in the pointcraft tool and send the fov to stellarium to see your framing, so easy and so efficient.

  • @GaryMCurran

Trevor, have you considered ditching the SyScan hand controller for your mount and using EQMOD with the EQ Direct cable from Shoestring Astronomy? For a little over $40USD, you can get direct control of the mount from your laptop. With Cartes du Ciel on your computer (a free download) you should be able to effectively control your mount so that you can actually pick the star you want for centering the image.
Stellarium gives you better graphics and photos, but CDC you can control your mount. No more trying to center large objects like the Veil Loop, just click on the star you want to use to center it, and there you go. Just rotate the camera for image framing.

Hi Trevor, good info on getting star alignment with a narrow band filter. I bought the Williams Optics Redcat 51 after seeing your video. I have had the Canon 60Da for 4 years now. It works great but better with a scope to get the ha regions to show up more. I have the adapter for the Sony a and the Canon eos. I have some great pictures with this set up of M8/M20, M16/17, and the North American Nebula. I can’t wait for winter to get M42, and the Rosette Nebula. Thanks for your inspiration. I and some of my fellow members from the Tacoma Astronomical Society always watch and learn from your videos.

Amazing stuff. I am new to astro photography. Are you able to share info or do a video on equipment for new people say in three price bands for DSLR photography. Like mounts, filters as most backyards are full of light pollution. Software for the PC and app for the photo. Scope choice. Though I have a cropped DSLR and a 400mm lens so thinking to start off with that. I also have a fisheye lens that may give some results

    Great work as always!
But you should really get a plate solving program e.g. All Sky Plate Solver. It fully integrates into APT and allows you to mouse-click anywhere on your preview image and center at that exact location. But you certainly know all that and doing it the old fashioned way is probably part of the fun, as is using your DSLR again.

Great video as always Trevor. I know it's an old video but I only just found out that you can frame easier with APT. If you find a point on stellarium that you want to be centre of your image, if you press shift +click on object it will send that command to APT. Hope that makes sense. Really helped me

Trevor... do you really not plate solve? I guess with a goto mount you really don't need to if you're aligned well.
I have yet to really get going with my real mount---it's been a busy summer with moving and trips, so I have only set up a few times with the skyguider pro, and I am utterly lost without plate solving.
    Funny story:
One night this spring, I was out someplace pretty dark and decided I wanted to try to get the pinwheel galaxy. So I get on my knees in the wet grass, polar aligned, and I think I'm lined up really close... it's not like it's hard to find, being right off the handle of the big dipper. I'm doing test exposures and looking and looking and I, for the life of me, cannot find it....
I don't have any means to plate solve since I don't have a computer with me, and my phone isn't helping... so I end up just getting really frustrated and giving up on it and try to do some wide-field instead with a camera lens, but the night is pretty much a waste-- except for learning what not to do.
Next day, I start plate solving my shots just for giggles... and on like my third or fourth test exposure, I have the galaxy center frame-- but I didn't expose long enough in my test exposures to see it... /facepalm
Now, when I'm out in the field, I make damn sure I can plate solve so I don't waste an hour looking for something I didn't know I found.
Funny hobby this... "what do you do?" "Oh, I take pictures of stuff you can't see..." "Cool... I guess...."

Is there a reason why you dont use APT plate solving? No need to star align. You can shoot the same target over multiple nights and APT will plate solve the mount back to the exact same position each time. You've rotated the camera? No problem! The platesolve result will tell you what angle your pointing is. Easy to reorientate.
