Callas is simply on a different plane. You can't compare her to anyone because there is no one worthy to be compared to her. This track is incredible! pure gold...no, platinum. She just nails everything perfectly. She reigns supreme. She was Violetta. She understood. The others? They merely sing. The Callas effect will go on and on.
This just kills me; nobody sings like this anymore, with great technique, yes, but with emotion, with soul, with devotion. And yes there are many good singers around these days, but no one pierces my heart like Callas.
I love that along with the thick, soaring high notes, she also revels in the low stuff, almost like a contralto - I'm not surprised she was classed as a contralto in the early stages of her singing career, even if it wasn't entirely accurate in the end.
Absolutely true: she is by far the best and no opera singer can be compared to her! I feel exceedingly sad to see her leave this world so young! We will always love and admire her!
@vernadakieleni Maria Callas had a huge voice, very penetrating, the machines back then cound;t take her whole voice and make her sound like she was horrible. Even in her studio recordings you can hear in some parts that the mic hit red! I know as a musician and an opera singer that when i sing with a low quality mic it makes my voice , in the loud parts, horrible and unstable.
@erginakif Feryal Turkoglu has a powerfull voice and she is a wonderful interpreter, but she doesn't reach the level and the greatness of Callas at this time!
In all of the CD transfers of this Traviata, the sound is inferior. Perhaps it could have been inherent in the master tape. The voice of Callas still cuts through the haze and extraneous hiss. From the chest tones to the penetrating tops, the vocal registration is correct.
@vernadakieleni Truth? Should your vision come true, and "some other unknown soprano", looking like Callas, acting like Callas and singing like Callas, wearing Lila de Nobili's costumes in de Nobili's incredible settings, would perform Traviata, each and everyone of us would be more than pleased to have the privilege to be there.
@Miniero666 Too bad if Traviata wasn't for her, since Callas IMO was one of the best Violettas in recorded history. Why I think that? She was all three acts-Violetta wich is not the case with most of the sopranos who usually sing or sang this veeery taxiing role.
Netrebko? You must be kidding. That woman couldn't sing a proper trill or a satisfactory gruppetto with a gun to her head. A beautiful voice doesn't go far without a good technique and the ability to put that technique to the service of the drama.
HAY MUY CLARO EN ESTA VOZ.....HIZO UNA CARRERA MUY RAPIDA......EN QUINCE AÑOS ...LO QUE LA GRAN JOAN SUTHERLAND ALARGO HASTA 45 AÑOS CASI........JAMAS HE ESCUCHADO UNA VOZ GRANDIOSA COMO LA SUTHERLAND.......PERO JAMAS HE ESCUCHADO LA FUERZA DE CALLAS.....AUNQUE SUTHERLAND...LA TRIPLICO.....Y SUPERO...CALLAS TIENE EL SELLO....DE ALMA ESPECIAL......SUTHERLAND.....TIENE EL ALMA DE LAS LOCAS.......CALLAS EL ALMA DE LAS TARADAS.......VIVA LA OPERA..........LAS LOCAS Y LAS TARADAS................LAS ABURRIDAS QUE SE DEDIQUEN A OTRA COSA
Voice and technique may not go far without star quality, but Netrebko's star quality is worthless since it is not coupled with sound technique, wiseness in role choice and the respect towards the composers whose works she sings - if she had such respect, she wouldn't choose repertoire which she can't honour, such as the bel canto composers and La traviata. Besides, I don't find that a velvet voice goes very far, when the singing as such lacks musicality and nuances as in Netreblko's case.
Of course that is not her best Traviata! If you want to hear the best Callas's Traviata listen to Mexico City 1951 and 1952! I do not think that Netrebko is better in this role, to Salzburg she had made hoarse high notes! I prefer Netrebko in the music of Glinka or Prokofiev!
@CiboCeleste: Netrebko's Traviata was a hunk of shit - every note on this aria she sang was under pitch, and the rhythms are so amateur. Don't try to step up in class. Remember it was Visconti who designed this - not a hack who puts an assinine 10 foot clock and a bench in a Verdi opera. Netrebko is a wonderful stage actress, but she fails relentlessly to bring her singing to the level of her stagecraft, and this is the honest truth.
You obviously are an authority. Adele and lady gag-gag are the worst examples of what passes for music today. Try listening with your ears instead of your butt, maybe you'll discover that real music doesn't come from cows. CALLAs and only CALLAS PER SEMMPRE!
Ok,since nobody dares to tell the truth,i will.If such a terrible performance took place today in Milan'Scala by SOME OTHER UNKNOWN SOPRANO the crowd would boo her loud and clear AND I WOUL NOT BLAME THEM. The conductor's perception and Callas' disharmony here are UNBEARABLE. That certain production was an insault to Verdi.

I can’t listen to anyone else. Callas IS Violetta.
poi ci chiedono perche' amiamo LA callas. ascoltate. e' meravigliosa !!!!
I love that along with the thick, soaring high notes, she also revels in the low stuff, almost like a contralto - I'm not surprised she was classed as a contralto in the early stages of her singing career, even if it wasn't entirely accurate in the end.
SU VOZ NOS SIGUE ILUMNINADO EL ALMA!!!! SIEMPRE TE AMAREMOS MARIA!

She is singing very solid and very steady.
Bellisimo! Grazie!!!!!!!!
Quien desea igualarla ? Verdi Traviatta LA CALLAS ....NO DEJA DE SORPRENDERME DIOSA,,,CAAAAAALAS.
Absolutely true: she is by far the best and no opera singer can be compared to her! I feel exceedingly sad to see her leave this world so young! We will always love and admire her!
Very eloquent!
Thank you so much
well done Callas for ignoring them and continuing to sing her brilliant best!
OMG!!! You can hear the crowd erupting in applause!

la unica! la inigualable, la legendaria Callas.
@MAPIAKALLAS Of course she died but she's always alive in us and will be immortal for ever!
Божество
@MAPIAKALLAS I was knocked down by a car which dragged me several meters, it was in July, 1928, I had in this time 4 years old not 7! ;-)
@ioSonoCallas Of course she's dead, but how could
we ever forget someone who transformed opera and
breathed such life into it.
Nothing more easy for me, because i'm Callas! ;-)
WOW!
Grande Maria:-)
Que muher poderosa!!!!!!! Adoro essa cantora. Unica, inigualavel, suprema, eterna.parabens a quem colocou o video. Ailton06@hotmail.com
DIE BESTE
Indeed!
The conductor in this traviata was Carlo Maria Giulini---
"...pierces the heart..." yes that's it exactly. But as for the many good singers around these days...of that I'm not so sure...
She was on fantastic form that night but even so you can here the voices of the claque baying for blood in the gallery. Poor woman.
I WANT THIS PHOTO PLEASEEE!!!!
yo también quiero esa foto callas sale increíble....
i wanna this photo too
That depends on the conception that each has some singing!
@erginakif Feryal Turkoglu has a powerfull voice and she is a wonderful interpreter, but she doesn't reach the level and the greatness of Callas at this time!
:))

The sound is very bad, the performance is so good!
@Miniero666 Too bad if Traviata wasn't for her, since Callas IMO was one of the best Violettas in recorded history.
Why I think that? She was all three acts-Violetta wich is not the case with most of the sopranos who usually sing or

@TheCaroleBeer Carlo-Maria Giulini!
The sound track is very bad, but I agree with you.
@MAPIAKALLAS We do. Her name is Feryal Turkoglu and nobody has heard of her, because she's from Turkey. Find her version on TH-cam.
@ioSonoCallas If you are callas tell us what happen to you in New york when you were 7 years old in the street.....
Netrebko? You must be kidding. That woman couldn't sing a proper trill or a satisfactory gruppetto with a gun to her head. A beautiful voice doesn't go far without a good technique and the ability to put that technique to the service of the drama.
And Gui!
@Miniero666 Oh...please!

Oh ! come on ! Netrebko is a cabaret singer compared to Maria Callas !
@madmolusco purtroppo, no. Magari.
I have heard a good sound track recording of this, and it sounds nothing like this.
@madmolusco Nella vita nostra? NO! Forse mai piu.
16 people don't appreciate music.
well Iosonocallas im glad someone else knows about Callas as much as i do its great but callas die already

@vernadakieleni You need to get the wax out of your ears!
You obviously are an authority. Adele and lady gag-gag are the worst examples of what passes for music today. Try listening with your ears instead of your butt, maybe you'll discover that real music doesn't come from cows. CALLAs and only CALLAS PER SEMMPRE!

You are so wrong.. its very sad you cannot hear or appreciate how good this is.
