- If only the complete Traviata survives in Video!! I tried to improve the image and combine with the radio broadcast in excellent sound!! Maria was the Ultimate Violetta!!!

The tenor didn't sound like Alfredo Kraus to me. The video I'd so grainy that you can't make out any of the singers. The Callas voice though is unmistakable
@@clefnoteproductions6695 Oh, I have no doubt it is Alfredo Kraus (long time devoted fan!). We know that he was the tenor who sang Traviata with Callas in Lisbon (at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos) in 1958. They released the live recording of this presentation much later, in 1980. So I was expecting to hear his voice. I recognized it as soon he started singing at 1:00. Then, he appears from 1:14 on. As you mention, the image is not clear, but we can still identify a 31 year-old Alfredo Kraus, especially when he is in profile... ☺. I just never imagined there existed a video of this presentation. A real gem.

You have done an amazing job of matching the radio broadcast sound to this scrap of film that survives. It's a two minute fragment that gives us a precious glimpse of what Callas and Krauss were like in La Traviata 65 years ago.

i know the video isn't that great quality, but still we can get a glimpse of what she was like as an actress. compared to the others on stage, she seems much more genuinely involved and truly "living" the role. not "operatic" acting

This is fantastic, thanks so much! It's hard even for myself to believe, but I heard Alfredo Kraus in this role more than once in the early '90's at the Met in the great Zeffirelli production. Yes, he still had it!

It’s from a 2012 documentary about Alfredo Kraus! But it has been first shown to “Callas Days “ a 1997 Documentary celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Callas’s Death!

É tão triste esse ato. Violeta abandonou Alfredo pela imposição do pai dele e lamentavelmente encontra-o na casa de Flora Bervoix, e sem saber do ocorrido, ele a maltrata. Mas sabia ele, que Violeta já estava com pouquíssimo tempo de vida. Pobre Violeta e pobre Alfredo!

Why is most video of her such shockingly poor quality? Looks like something from the 1850s. Of all the hundreds of performances they didn't film one live opera with her professionally? I mean other far lesser known singers had great videos at that time and before. By her time there had been great indoor filming technology for decades.
The lack of filmed footage is ridiculous. What gets me is the covent garden Tosca where only the second act was recorded. Why not just have the film crew record the whole thing? Alas the little snippets of video that survive are extraordinary. The Norma rehearsal from Paris is earth shattering.
I believe in the 50s they didn't have all the necessary means (equipment etc.) to video/audio recording live from the Opera theaters. Hence only voice recording and they usually made films, on TV, in order to bring the Opera on video. There are some rare live video recordings but unfortunately none with Callas. Le sigh!
As for Tosca at Covent Garden, that was a concert where the 2nd act was part of it but not the complete Opera.@@ViardotVSGrisi
