Maria Callas at her best,sings "Violetta Aria" La Traviata

  • Scenes from the 1984 Italian mini-series "The Life of Verdi"? The singing is from the 1953 Santini studio recording? it's Callas singing but she didn't "do" this as a vocal sound track - as she had left us in 1977.
    It does show how associated she was with the role, that the producers of the series would choose her voice for the Traviata segment rather than a soprano still singing at the time of filming.Thanks Arnold

    I pity people who have the audacity to blatantly comment on Callas' signing and understanding of the roles. She is the best Violetta ever and the way she's dived into the depth and layers of her character and was able to present it so well both musically and theatrically is beyond comparison to any other singer I believe. Yes ther are other great Violettas but no one as moving, emotive and human as Callas. She makes Opera human something that other "great" singers lack sometimes. No hate but I feel a little disappointed when people dont understand the nuances she worked on and blindly compare her to other singers for no reason. Calling her the best doesn't other singers aren't but it needs to be noticed, especially with Violetta she has an edge over other singers. It can never be re-created the way she did it.

    My grandma had the pleasure of seeing Callas live several times back in the 50's when she was a young lady. Once, when we were talking about these events, she said something like: On stage, Callas was much more than just a singer taking the role, in fact, she WAS Violetta with every bit of her body and soul. She also said, it is not possible to describe her stage presence with words, it's something you had to see for yourself..

      Which aria? Sutherland sang "Sempre Libera" many times, well into the 80's, and beautifully (her live recoding from the Met in 1970 has never been surpassed). It's Callas who supposedly said she'd never sing Lucia again after hearing Sutherland in rehearsal for it. Bottom line: They were both great artists.

      Interesting. Caballe was a great, but relatively lazy, artist. She had only a
      "sort of" trill for the most part and took on many parts that she only barely had the voice to do. However, I saw her as Violetta early in her careen and was astounded. When the party scene opened it was hard to believe that this chubby lady was the most desired courtesan in Paris. After only a few bars of music her size became irrelevant and she was incredible in the part. I do not think the "equal of Callas" because I do not think that is ever possible but she made me want her to be happy even when I knew she would not be in the end and what more can you ask of any Violetta.

    • @jondavwal13
      @jondavwal13 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Eiswirth1 I know. Don't you love how they make up this shit up? It's very easy for the greatest singer in the world to humbly declare that a declining mess is the greatest singer in the world and smile sweetly. Sutherland never heard anybody sing anything and decide not to sing it. She did not sing a few things after she was unhappy with herself. Queen of the Night being one, which is not really a test of anything but the ability to beep a high note. If only Callas had been as aware of the limitations of her own voice, or Renata Scotto.

    he said that when she did the final scene when violetta dies, callas did so with her eyes open - she did not close her eyelids, but she WITHDREW THE SPARK OF LIFE FROM HER EYES!
    also it is said that in 'tosca', that she nearly stabbed the baritone tito gobbi - she didnt notice that the blade of the dagger hadn't retracted!
    when she played a part she WAS that part.

    Maria Callas fue una grande del siglo XiX en la Opera, ella tenia un angel especial, una magia que cautivaba a todos, ademas una virtuosa voz que abarcaba desde la tesitura de Mezzo, soprano dramatica y decolorature, lo que la hacia una soprano absoluta, ella interpreto Carmen, La Boheme y en La traviata con una potente voz de soprano dramatica canto el " .. Amame Alfredo....." y la decoloratura del brindis como nadie ha podido hacer. Maria era una perfeccionista que dejaba sus personajes sin mas posibilidades por eso fue una grande del bell canto.

    however, if you want to know callas, you have to listen to her voice. her artistic persona was who she was in the truest sense. her 'life' - meaning her biography doesn't really reveal her true self - her soul. only her voice and her music does that. cheers.

    Gustavo, I agree with you . The Southerland was a pure coloratura soprano, while Maria was a dramatic coloratura. But diferencencia is that Callas was a complete artist a mixture of airborne everything. The Southerland had tuning problems and live concerts are testing them. was also cold and unemotional. So lacked seasoning. Maria was unique and match it will be very difficult

    Pyrare1 dein Statement zu Callas hier ist absolut korrekt. Ich habe ihre Verdienste nie in Frage gestellt - man lese nur das Buch von Jürgen Kesting! Einer Verherrlichung von Idealen, die bestenfalls Idole sein können, kann ich dagegen nicht zustimmen.
    Der Vergleich LP-CD und Aufnahmetechnik ist falsch! Meine Familie besitzt fast alles was es von Callas an LP-Aufnahmen gibt, sogar Einzelstücke, und die überarbeiteten CDs betonen das "Schrille" ganz eindeutig.
