Just a story not many people know…. In 1941 Nazis invaded Greece. Maria was just a local soprano at the time. One night she sung at Herodium while the Nazi generals were all there. At the end of the night all generals approached, expressed their admiration to her and urged her to go to Italy or USA. She didnt, of course, untill much later. Within the next 3 years 300.000 Athenians died of starvation because the Nazis stole our food to feed their army. But during these yrs, Nazi officers were bringing plenty of food to, thin at the time, Maria to make sure she is well feed. As soon as the officers were leaving her house she would go outside to the neighborhood and give all food to the families with children. My mother was one of those kids fed by her generosity. Thank u Maria, I would have never been born if it wasnt 4 u
I´ve never heard that 300,000 Athenians people died because of the Nazi invasion. Very sad but in times of war many innocents have to die. And still yet we see this kind of atrocities happening because of dictators and wars. Thank you for sharing your story. I thought that Maria was very arrogant and snob, but she was very humane.
@eli H she was obviously a kid. He said that. But as she grew up, and Maria became more famous, is understandable that the more grown up people would refer as the woman that feed them sometimes. Like, haven't your parents and uncle told stories about u when u were a kid?

Opera and classical music tend to provoke polarized opinions- especially on TH-cam. Maria Callas had a great voice and looked like a movie star. Because of the latter, she indisputably had a leg up on her competition in terms of fame and renown. It's just a fact of life that talented and beautiful people have an advantage over people who may have more talent but less beauty. I enjoy Callas' voice, and won't be bullied into not enjoying it, but everyone who cares about an art has their favorites and their grudges, especially when they feel other people aren't listening carefully to the actual music. Even when looks are left out of the argument, classical music aficionados are prone to polarized opinions. I've heard people say that Ashkenazy and Horowitz are great, but Rubenstein is rubbish, for instance. These are the sort of people who can be provoked to anger by mentioning Lang Lang and be induced to bolt from a conversation in a huff immediately by just mentioning the name Van Cliburn. :D !!>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> > > > > >

I am only 21, but last night I had a dream with her. We were around six or seven of us sitting in a room, and at one point I noticed one of the ladies was Maria Callas, in her twenties. It was a pretty good feeling to sit next to her and I really love this masterpiece.
Of all the coloratura singers, Maria Callas can be identified by just a few notes sung. Her voice has something not possessed by other sopranos, no matter how wonderful they also may be. I do not look for perfection in any musician, and consider imperfections to be part of the personality of a musician. In the same way that the most beautiful diamonds contain imperfections that can make them even more interesting and more valuable than perfect specimens.
In the mid 1980's I had the pleasure to drive to a Thanksgiving party in Connecticut and among the passengers were the great Regina Resnik and her husband Blatas. We talked about, of course, opera and, of course, the name Callas came up. Regina said "That woman was the greatest Traviata I ever saw". Her husband said "I never cared for the voice". In that deep mezzo voice Regina had she practically yelled at him: "I am not talking about the voice. She knew that role better than anybody else". So there! This extract is from her comercial recording, the second recording she did for Italian Cetra (the first had been Gioconda) in 1953. She hated the cast and always hoped to record it again with her mentor Tullio Serafin, di Stefano and Tito Gobbi. But Angel records couldn't wait for her contract with Cetra to expire so they went ahead and recorded Traviata with Antonietta Stella and the cast Callas wanted for HER Traviata. She got really mad and being who she was, refused to record with Serafin for the next two years, her recordings were conducted by Antonino Votto, Herbert von Karajan and others. This recording shows the power of that voice in 1953, eventually she would refine her interpretation to the point that, as one English critic said, "all Violettas make you cry in the last act. SHE could make you cry in the second act!"
I agree! She had vocal problems for sure but she was such a great singing actress one can hear every note sung as did Galli-Curci and Southerland and not be as moved. I can only imagine what it was like then to hear her at full complete command of that voice but I was only 9 and living in Maimi, Florida. She was in NYC I am sure then.
nunca jamas existira otra como Maria Callas siempre seras la mejor y atraves de tu voz y tu arte siempre viviras,en el corazon de las personas que apreciamos el arte!!!
The emotion comes through - it is not simply vocalization - it is raw emotion required by this aria masterpiece - self-doubt and hope at the same time! Unequalled!!
Listening to this makes me wonder how is it that singers and singing teachers let the good singing technique fade away? Why did we let it happen or how did it happen? Its a pity we don't have singers like Callas, Sutherland, Horne, Caballé, etc.. anymore. I am a singer myself and I am struggling to find a way on how to sing with that technique. Its gonna be hard , but I would love to take the challenge and see if I get other singers interested in returning to the technique of the past. I really want another golden era of opera to happen.
mckavitt13 and what exactly are you trying to say? that she had vocal problems because of her PERFECT technique? or your comment is just random? are you trying to make a point? if you are trying to indicate her technique ruin her voice, please delete immediately your comment, her technique not only was PERFECT but it also enable her voice to be full round, strong and BEAUTIFUL, I don't like today's opera singers, they are sound horrible. Her voice detorieted because she WAS SICK, the muscles of her whole body became weak, even after her prime, BECAUSE of her immaculate technique she was able to still sound MUCH better than most singers today.
read everything you can about bel canto, it took me few months until I got it but after I positioned everything correct, all my vocal problems got away and I hit the notes rounder, there is no force and they are stronger, darker and more pleasant. No force equals better vocal color. Some people at the forum I was the modernvocalist, wrote that bel canto singers uses twang, I think that's true. I used to suffer from nodules for many years, with my incorrect singing I always had pain and I couldn't even practice, I was a lost cause. My dream to sing was thrown out of the window. After I "got" it, I am having a great time learning and focusing more on interpretation and hitting the correct notes than how to sing correctly.
As an 80 year old, i am still as enthralled by Maria Callas' voice as I was as a young teenager. Not only is the voice beautiful but her treatment of the words is beyond reproach.
Callas had big vocal problems, believe me. Less so here, but afterwards...

and what exactly are you trying to say? that she had vocal problems because of her PERFECT technique? or your comment is just random? are you trying to make a point? if you are trying to indicate her technique ruin her voice, please delete immediately your comment, her technique not only was PERFECT but it also enable her voice to be full round, strong and BEAUTIFUL, I don't like today's opera singers, they are sound horrible.
After I "got" it, I am having a great time learning and focusing more on interpretation and hitting the correct notes than how to sing correctly.
charisaob thank youu!! 😀
