- This is how I designed and built my first black soldier fly larvae box. The main design feature of the bin is that the entire bottom drains! I did this in hopes that it would alleviate some problems like anaerobic conditions I have seen talked about in other bins. I'll walk you through my thought process and how I built it in this video.

i do use de- watered pure poultry not fermented waste as substrate for my black soldier fly larvae to feed on and if i have to be honest with you guys, i have totally replaced soya bean with black soldier fly larvae in my fishery, piggery and poultry , i can now smile all the way.

Shadeclothe is probably better for drainage than the weed mat. Better holes.

You used OSB on the inside? The inside gets WET due to temperature changes and the compost decomposing. What will prevent the OSB from soaking up the putrid liquid and stinking horribly as well as becoming a health hazard for you?
Do you find a lot of adult black soldier flies around the box? I'm thinking of getting into BSF to manage quail manure in my small urban backyard, but I'm worried about the yard being filled with them.
No, I never see the flies. Weird, right? I had a hot compost near my back door the larva loved. One adult did end up in my house. Just super loud around the window frame. They don't have mouth parts as adults. They don't bite or eat anything. So as adults the noise is the only thing I've been annoyed by.
Don't worry about them, they actively out breed competing pest flies and don't bother people! They're pretty newt flies

my larvae are crawling straight up the sides and out the crack under the lid. i thought they couldn't handle more than a 45* angle. any ideas?
Humidity is very high. They are clinging to wet surface. It can either be more dry or you can run a velcro strip along all the sides, they can't get passed that.

Do u know any black soldier fly breeders in San diego .I live in San diego and I would like to add them to my compost so I can use larvae castings for fertilizing my plants and I also got chickens . Back in the day pet kingdom use to sell live black soldier larvae for reptile food and I heard they have like double the nutrients then a meal worm.
I don't know of any local, you can attract them naturally in summer with stinky food waste. I had mine shipped to me when I did this project.
@@NaturesAlwaysRight nice I found some live larvae at beast pets and supplies pet shop in spring valley it was like a hundred of them for 8 bucks and I bought some down to earth insect frass at home avenue farmers market nursery.
