Euro nymphing, aka tightline nymphing, has been around since before bobbers were renamed indicators. However, that technique has evolved greatly within the last 20 + years or at least since I was first introduced to it in 1997. Competition has driven this technique to what it is today and continues to refine and redefine the sport of fly fishing.
