    As always Howard Croston delivers an outstanding video. Not only how to, but his reasoning behind why.

    Howard has such a great teaching delivery style. Always incredibly informative and one has the sense you are stood with him in the river. Save yourself the cost of a few hours with a guide and watch his videos!

    The fact that HC catches few trout (in a relative way) gives to this video an extra-taste of real, concrete, instructive river fishing.

    Such good advice and a really clear, simple video - skinny water, upstream breeze, lost nymphs, a tangle, snags and a good few fish - a typical hardworking nymphing session and nice to see everything working so well together - plus Piscari protectors put to good use at the end. Thanks for video!

    Excellant video and Howard has a real talent in communicating to all of us who are trying to learn..
    The one tip that I liked in this video is how Mr. Croston would make lots of casts into a defined area, and saying that each drift goes through a bit differently, really covering the water thoroughly! Great advice! Thank You!

    That video was so incredible and helpful, it is so clear that there is much that I can learn from you. I do have one question, when I first started researching how to fish with a French Leader, the books each have all these leader formulas for constructing your own, but you are using a level leader, my question is whether a commercial French Level is better than one tied from these various formulas? Can you please give me some guidance in this area. What commercial leaders will do the same job or better? I am 30 yrs., USArmy, ret., and combat disabled, so many things that would require a lot of hand dexterity are difficult, as an example, even tying on small flies is a challenge. What are the best level leaders for French Nymphing that you would recommend?,

    Thanks for the very informative video. A couple of questions. 1. Do you use the same rod/reel combo in comps? 2. Do you find the 2nd rod in your waist holder acts like a tangle magnet?

    • @howardcrostonflyfisher9227
      @howardcrostonflyfisher9227 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi , I’m Lucky being the designer to have access to a lot of different models of rods, meaning I often chop and change specific models based on venue / other considerations. The rod holder is only one way I carry a 2nd rod , it rarely tangles but I fish a lot carrying a 2nd rod so am very used to it .

  • @oscarbarreiro4266
    @oscarbarreiro4266 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the great advice! In my case I love dry fly and I like euronimph... But I hate carrying two rods, can the rod that you have not used serve well for these 2 purposes having the extension?

    • @howardcrostonflyfisher9227
      @howardcrostonflyfisher9227 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes - it’s the Wing , Streamflex plus , it can be fished at 9.8ft or 10.8ft , the extension section is held inside the butt section when not in use .

  • @benjamingentycosta739
    @benjamingentycosta739 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video thanks. What rod holder do you use or suggest to fish with 2 rods? Cheers

    • @howardcrostonflyfisher9227
      @howardcrostonflyfisher9227 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries, the rod holder is a tube with a slot cut in that’s tie wrapped to my belt at a slight upwards angle . You can make one in pvc pipe easily although mines a carbon tube .

  • @fieldsman3307
    @fieldsman3307 ปีที่แล้ว

    One point I will make is that Howard and most of the other fly fishing experts are always doing their videos on fabulous rivers , my two are in the same conditions but go from mega deep pools to shallow runs where now 2/3 of the bed is dry leaving just a bit of water so how do you fish that with nymph or even dry when there is no sign of any fish save the odd shoal of small dace ?

    • @FullingMillTV
      @FullingMillTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      You just make sure to go shallow enough that you aren't hitting bottom as often! And if you put in a few sessions trying different methods and flies and see nothing, perhaps the fish have gone elsewhere. One thing I like to do when I'm not sure is to sit on the bank during a hatch and just observe. If there are bugs, the fish should follow. If you don't see anything, keep walking on the stream until you find the fish.

    How do you prefer to connect your tippet to your micro leader on your nymphing setup?

    • @howardcrostonflyfisher9227
      @howardcrostonflyfisher9227 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s either a true 1mm tippet ring (most are way bigger) or I knot directly to my micro leader .

    • @richardferrara86
      @richardferrara86 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@howardcrostonflyfisher9227 yeah I’ve noticed on my own setups how heavy even the labeled 1mm tippet rings feel so I’m experimenting with different connections. Which manufacturers offer a true 1mm ring? I’m located in the United States so I’ll need to find someone that ships internationally.

      Casting a thin euro leaders is different to a normal casting stroke as there’s no line to load the rod , hence the casting stroke is not the same

    What range are you generally fishing at in this video?

    • @howardcrostonflyfisher9227
      @howardcrostonflyfisher9227 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It varies but at max I have 21 ft of leader (inc tippet ) & around 2 ft max of Euro line so 23 ft max range . Beyond that you need to increase bead weight substantially to counter sag . At its best I’m usually fishing around 21ft away or closer depending on the situation.

      @theheronknowsprimewater1035 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@howardcrostonflyfisher9227 is that 23ft from the rod tip?

    • @howardcrostonflyfisher9227
      @howardcrostonflyfisher9227 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@theheronknowsprimewater1035 whist shooting this video I fished from a full 23ft , to within rod swing (ie around 11ft) as I moved upstream (from the rod tip ) . Depending on what I was casting too and the wind .
