This is my opportunity to bring to you what I have learned in all my fly fishing adventures as a guide and competitor on Fly Fishing Team USA! I will have tutorials, fish adventures, and videos on all the factors it takes to find fish and tie flies. On the Road Pt 4 - BIG BROWN ON DRY FLY - Fly Fishing INDIGENOUS WATERS the WIND RIVER
Today we drop into the lower half of the Wind River canyon on the indigenous waters of the Shoshone / Arapahoe reservation. The fishing started out a little slow with windy conditions, but we were able to find some good fish. Later in the day I did turn a huge brown on dry fly, come along to see it! Thanks for watching.

Single Fly & Pocket Water Tactics

I find so much water goes untouched from most fly fishers. During my years in competition I found many instances where fishing a single fly gave me better results. Efficiency, accuracy and adaptability are important to the tactics of becoming a better angler. I hope this gives you more insight into breaking down your river and the approach you should take when fishing a single fly set up. visit...

I sure do love my Echo 10’ - 5wt Stillwater rod! Excellent job designing this one Norm!
Happy to hear that rod is doing its job and well! Thanks for watching!
Lots of chunkier Norm. Thanks for a great video.
Thanks for watching!
Nice brown Norm!
Skating large dries for big browns on the surface epic!!
Yes sir, great day!
WAY TO GO NORM!
Good to see ya yesterday at the shop. Nice fish, beautiful, #indigenous I’m hoping Mundos ice will have some good fish and the Juan. Keep that GoPro on bro!
Thanks man...will try to keep the videos going!
I’m digging these videos buddy! Keep up the great work!!
Thanks brother! We'll see you soon!
Wow, that was incredible Norm! Super nice brown! ✌
Thanks and thanks for watching!
So many great fish on that stretch of river. What were the dry patterns you were fishing at the end of the day?
Just a guess, but in case anyone is curious - Norman can confirm or deny - all on the Davy knot (which, btw, he can tie in about 3-5 seconds without a tag end to cut). Great video, Norman
Davy knot all the way! Learned from the OG Davy Wotton back in 1997!
Dang Norm! Glad you got to float in there. I’ve fished that river since a baby, just never had the chance to float past the old dam site below the tunnels till out of the canyon.
Hey Charlie!! I have floated this canyon many times in years past after getting to know Darren. It is awesome to see his management and business producing quality fishing experiences! I wish tribal communities could have this quality of water to have recreation business opportunities like this to build on. We hardly can rely on having water here in NM that doesnt belong to Texas...WTF! Happy New Year!!
Killer trip so far. And a killer fun river to fish.
Definitely and thanks for watching!
There are no stockers in this river. Again, please don’t blow up spots, keep the river names out of the videos. You will still get the same amount of views
Please take the name of this place out of the title, it is hard enough trying to get a float trip for this river. There is no need to blow it up
SFU
@ classy response
He’s not from here, he doesn’t have to worry about the consequences of spot burning places where he doesn’t live and fish frequently
@@skpeep2030 quit your whining
Too late, everybody’s scrambling to the Wind River
Fish the Tribal Waters of The Wind River….You Must!!! Awesome experience!
GReat to have on this trip! Was a great way to exit 2024!
Killer man!! Such beautiful wilderness and fat trout!! 🎣🤙🏽
Yes sir! An awesome experience to see fellow indigenous fly fisher help maintain waters for his community.
@ absolutely! It’s extremely important for us to help keep these river wild and healthy. Keeping doin you Norm! 🤙🏽
@ Word, should have addressed that…no Reservation designation is a wilderness, as colonialist term implies. However the experience of this canyon can separate you miles away from the road that parallels you as you fish….as the gov’t says, its not a wilderness.
@ okay……🙄 if we really need to get so technical LOL 😂
A-Dog!
Thanks Norm. I appreciate your videos and ideas about a variety of ways to to rig for nymph fishing. You are certainly helping me to be more thoughtful about how I approach different fishing situations. All the best to you in the new year. Alan
I am glad you are able to find benefit from my videos. Thank you for watching and Happy New Year!
What makes you say the rainbow is a stocker? It has its Adipose.
It has the adipose, but unlike steelhead, rainbows usually don't have their adipose fins clipped. Of course that may depend from state to state. However, the fin condition is indicative of being raised in raceways crowded with other trout. Fins are usually chewed down as a result of territorial behavior, as well as nutritional deficiency causing under development in fin growth. Thanks for watching and for the question. Have a good New Year!
What is the name of the lodge you are staying at?
It’s owned by wind river whitewater. It’s one of two houses on the river side of the canyon. This one is farther north in the canyon. Surrounded by beautiful trees and has a boat ramp right by it
@ really cool looking place
What a beautiful view to fish!
@@pentafishing it is an amazing place!
I travel the Western states every summer for almost a decade just fly fishing. That canyon is one of my favorite places on earth.
Love those snowy days on the Juan!
Almost hookset back into the trees lol
Bruh. Man good times

Another great vid, thanks Norm! Never fished that drainage, thanks for showing it.
Another one to add to the list. Thanks for watching, Cheers!
Awesome video! Great action
Yeah that was a fun session! Thanks for watching
Up until recently, I had never heard of the San Juan Cutthroat. I always thought that the fish native to the west side of the San Juan Mountains were the Colorado River Cutthroats. There is an article in Colorado Outdoors that describes the rediscovery of a distinct lineage, first discovered in the San Juan River at Pagosa Springs back in the 19th Century. Having grown up in New Mexico, it would be the ultimate life-goal to see cutthroat reestablished in their native range. The Chuska, Cebolleta, and the area near Dulce are all within the San Juan basin, plus there is the San Juan itself. Imagine a day where you can find three different susbspecies of cutthroats, San Juan, Rio Grande, and Yellowfin (Arkansas River basin) all on a journey along US 64. It is not that there is anything wrong with the way it is, rather, it is important that we leave the watersheds better than we found them, someone in the future will appreciate the effort.
Dang Norm. Looks like you were fishing at a Hatchery! 🤣 That's an awesome day! Always fun to watch your vids. Thanks.
Hatchery is a pretty close description of the water. Had a great day playing there lol. Thanks for watching!
Do you think streamers would have brought bigger fish
Always a possibility.
900+ CFS?

Great content Norm! Are you running a euro fly line or a floating line?
I am fishing a floating Double Taper 2 wt line. Thanks for watching!
I have the Shadow X 10’6” 3 weight. Would you recommend a 2wt line or a 3 weight floating line?
@@JeffKurtz-v7f I recommend a DT2F. That is what I am running with on my 10'6" 3wt Shadow X.
Thank you for the info. One more question what is your leader setup? You mentioned your sighter, tippet etc?
