    Thank you so much Big Truck Big RV for this video!! We've been avoiding a 5er just so we didn't have to mess with the hitch. After searching through numerous videos and reviews we decided to avoid the gooseneck adapter also. But now that we've seen how the Anderson Ultimate Fifth wheel hitch works plus you're unbiased review we feel much more confident with this option. Time to start shopping for our first 5er!!

  • @DKrage01

    Love the video and the hitch! We have a similar setup. BedRug, Wen generator, long bed dually (mine is a Ram) (not sure of yours but I have a backflip tonneau.
    I was about to mention switching the coupler orientation to gain side rail and tailgate clearance when you demonstrated it at the end. Long bed users have that luxury.
    I love the Andersen but recently switched to a Reese GooseBox hitch. It provides a cushioned (2 shocks and an airbag) hitch that couples right down onto my GN ball. This is not an adapter but rather it replaces the entire pin box. Talk about a "free" bed when you uncouple! Lippert approves of them on some of their frames and actually sells them. If you are indeed like me you'll be putting up a video on it soon... Keep up the good work!

    This is the only hitch I've used. We got our 5th wheel in April. It's been nothing but a pleasure to use. It's simple, fast, & strong. No clinking or clanking, no grease. A super product. I really believe it's going to replace all the others out there.

    Thank you Big Truck Big RV for this video and your steady stream of excellent videos which helps me do my research. I am planning to get a 1 ton diesel truck and lighter fifth wheel this fall for a 1 year road trip with the family and I will definitely consider the anderson hitch for it's light weight. I am leaning towards purchasing a long bed but it is great to know their product can work in a short bed leaving my options open which will be good when looking at trucks (especially as I may buy used). Seeing the product explained in a clear way was really helpful thanks and look forward to more of these from you!

    I literally just walked in the door from a one month utah/idaho/nevada trip with an andersen. I have the steel andersen attached to a Reese rail adapter which attaches to factory pucks in my short bed f250. (no turnball). I am a single female, so I love that I could easily install and lift, but also, it is SO easy for me to hitch up by myself. I can see the ball over my low profile toolbox. I did add chains because I noticed the DMV websites for some states said they require them for this connection. andersen has a chain package u can buy on amazon, which is pretty much just standard chains and two eyebolts that replace the regular andersen bolts. love my andersen!

    I'd like to say I've greatly enjoyed your videos. Thank you for all the work that you put into them.
    As I watched this video I concerns. I saw a significant amount "wiggle" of the king pin that obviously transferred to the trailer and that was just driving around the parking lot. Driving out on the highway where high winds are a reality like they are in West Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma and other central plains areas can be very dangerous when the wind can turn a "little wiggle" into a big problem.

    I really like the thought, quality, and engineering that goes into these Andersen products; Gives a sense that they are built up to a standard instead of down to a price. Certainly where products like this have a potential impact on the safety of their end users, the three most frightening words are 'made in China'.......

    Love my Andersen Hitch only issue I'm having is the rear of the box is hitting my tailgate when the back of my truck up a little higher than the trailer like pulling into a driveway. I turned the coupler around which of course puts the front of the 5th wheel closer to the cab of my truck which make my turning radius shorter. so know I'm looking to get the tailgate with the dropped center for 5th wheel. For those wanting to know what kind of truck i have it's a RAM 2500 Diesel 4X4 Tradesman with standard lift or stock lift. Great video thanks for sharing. Also wanted to mention ( what I was told buy the dealer ) that the Andersen Hitch puts less stress on the 5th wheel structure on the over hang that was a problem back a few years ago.

I love my B&W hitch but it's heavy which is not a problem because I have a cherry picker and also I just get this setup so to go back to change might not be feeble right now so I will keep my B&W setup for now and maybe in a few years down the road I might get one.

    I understand the weight issue. I transport RVs for a living so see many different size and weights of trailers. In the transport business, Anderson hitches are not allowed. I was told this is due to the number of failures of these hitches. I do like how light they are, but if you look at the B&W side by side there is no comparison of the structural integrity. The Anderson may be ok for a light trailer, but anything over 15k lbs I wouldn’t trust it..
    Thank you Mr Truck for the informative video.

    Ive been using the B&W Companion for 5 years now, truly the finest hitch for any money. In my opinion, after using the very Best, I would never want to step backward, and do anything else. It is heavy but I very seldom remove it from my truck.

    A guy I work with bought one of these and just got back from a 4 week trip to Alaska. He had nothing but problems with it and is going to throw...in his words that piece of garbage away and go back to a regular hitch. He said that no matter how tight you tried to make it it would walk sideways and then you would not be pulling on the center line and the trailer would be off to one side or the other as soon as you had to stop or it would keep working loose and start banging the bed floor. This is just to relay someones actual experience with the hitch going to Alaska and back to the Great Lake area.

    Great video! When you mentioned the weight, I had to laugh a little. My Trailer Saver hitch (TS3) weighs over 300 pounds and it stays connected to the trailer whenever the trailer is parked for more than a few days (like in storage, or when we are camping for a week or more). I just pull the 4 pins and raise the trailer/hitch combo and drive forward. I would LOVE to have something this easy to use if only it offered air bags.

    I bought the Andersen hitch. My truck when I hooked up my camper was two inches to tall and I could not get it any lower. The ball would not go any lower. Also the cheap red plastic broke the first time that I unhooked my camper. The concept was great but I went back to my B&W.

    • @TheHyde8875
      @TheHyde8875 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You probably got the wrong of hitch. There are 3 different heights. I got the standard height and set the ball in the mid position and works fine. You probably broke the red guide unhooking because you're trailer wasn't high enough and dragged your ball on the way out.

    • @SeventyGTX

      Not sure how you killed the "cheap red plastic". I forgot to lower my tailgate when disconnecting and destroyed the gate, yet the plastic just had a couple of slight marks in it.

    I see this is an old review, but for those new folks that are watching, the low clearance he spoke of at the end can be adjusted by raising the ball in the Anderson hitch. You get clearance with bed rails and it helps level the trailer. Ive used mine for two years......smooth, comfortable and lite.

    We mounted our Andersen Fifth Wheel Hitch-release on the steel of the gooseneck, rather than the fiberglass of the RV. More secure, stable and compact installation. No holes in the RV itself. The Andersen product is stellar.

    One other thing that I really appreciate about the Andersen hitch is that the hitch doesn't bind if the trailer is not really level when unhooking and hooking back up. There was a comment earlier that chains are required. But Andersen states that the hitch was tested and approved as a 5th wheel hitch, therefore chains are not required. They do sell a chain add on package, but they are not required. I have a set to install on mine for added safety, this way if something happens I can feel like I did over and above what was required. I love the hitch!

    Great video. I've had the Andersen for several months now and have over 2000 miles towing through Nevada, California, Oregon, and Washington. It's super solid and quieter than my Pullrite auto slide was. Also, as noted, SO much lighter. One thing I found was, on my 2018 RAM with a B&W drop in ball, the piece that slides down over the ball was just a tiny bit too short. Turns out Andersen makes several lengths of that piece. After seeing you compressing the bed rug with the trailer attached I'm wondering if that would have made any difference on mine. BTW, the directions are nice and clear and explain how to measure for clearance; I had to spin the pin attachment around also.

    2018 Dodge 3500 Megan cab, short bed, and bed mounted toolbox. Pulling 36ft. 5TH wheel for one year up and down the mountains of MT and ID. No problems with any clearances, bucking, chattering, etc. Very satisfied.

      I am looking at a Ram 3500 crew cab short bed. Will this Anderson hitch work on a short bed? Does it need a slider hitch? My 5th wheel is 34.5'.

    I also have a B&W and just as you said a great hitch and a little heavy. I'm 68 and I still can lift it. I have seen where people use a floor crane ($180.00 @ harbor freight) or build a box height cart and just load and unload. My floor space is limited because of a 91 gal/tool box, I have only a little over a inch to spare with the box & B&W. The Anderson hitch looks like a good one.

    hey thank you for that video and that demonstration that is awesome I like that I still think I'm more particulars for the B&W hitch I like that set up better even though it is later Frontier and things up a little bit of room each of us are different that's all LOL but what I was going to tell you you talked about clunking with the fifth wheel going back and forth and I found out the reason why you feel that is because your king pin is a standard set up versus the more ride king pin system
    having the B&W hitch as well as the Moor ride Kingpin you don't feel that jolting and clunking... my buddy has been set up and with that hitch system ,he doesn't feel the fifthwheel hardly at all. anyway thank you for everything just thought I would share this video was really good information for somebody who likes something a little different... safe travels

    I understand the concern with the weight of the B&W companion.
    I've helped a buddy set up a simple block and tackle setup using simple S Hook on his garage door header.
    Carport or even engine hoist would work just as well.
    We used a cheap $8 Harbor Freight Hardwood Dolly to roll it around the driveway, garage, shop.

    I've had my Anderson Hitch for a couple of years now. And I really like it, the reason I switch from a traditional 5th Hitch was the point you made. When I'm not using it, I was hauling add weight for no reason at all.

  • @brendenspudsbenjamin

    Don't put the trailer breakaway cable on the hitch. instead put it on the truck. If that hitch fails and you lose your trailer, the brakes won't set because the hitch and trailer are still connected. The breakaway cable needs to be separate from that.

    On the weight issue of the B&W or any fifth wheel hitch for that matter. When I unhooked from mine I left the hitch hooked to the trailer and disconnected the connection at the vehicle and simply lifted the hitch out of the pickup with the trailer jacks. When it was time to hook back up I backed back under and got close, disconnected the kingpin and reattached the hitch to the pickup and then hooked the trailer back to the fifth wheel.

    I'm was so excited to see this title. I've been debating on this hitch for awhile but was skeptical on a few things. We pull gooseneck via adapter for our fifth wheel so I've been intrigued by the lightness and height from the get go. We don't use the b&w companion because it really only gives us 4 inches of clearance and we prefer 6+. But it's never pulled level because of the adapter we have is also an extension. We have a 13 dodge 2500. Would this be level with the bed rails or atleast high enough to get that 6" of clearance? Great review. Very informative

    • @BigTruckBigRV
      @BigTruckBigRV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe it will work great as you have 3 leveling options to raise the ball. I'm not 100% sure, but you could always return it if its not high enough for you..... cough Amazon cough.

    I have a Ram 3500 dually. I have the Anderson Hitch for 2 yrs and don’t like to lift 5th jacks really high to get on the ball. This also caused one of my jacks to leak. I also noticed the base drifted side ways over time.

    I like the idea of converting it to a gooseneck, but seems like there’s a lot more components that could fail vs just hooking up kingping to 5th wheel hitch.

      There is a reason big trucks (semi) use 5th wheel and not a gooseneck.

  • @Joshua79C
    @Joshua79C 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    As I said on MrTruck's channel, Pro Tip: one should really do in the first place like what you did after finding out the adapter sets the neck back so many inches and that much closer to your bed sides, the way you first had also redistributes the tongue weight of the trailer more to the rear than over the beds ball hitch location which is the proper location for more equal weight distribution. So Please, Put the adapter on so the ball cup is on the back side of the pin, so that if it breaks for some reason the trailer will not fall off as easily if it was forward. Either way in the worst case your bed will be the only thing to sustain damage and hopefully not cause damage to others property. Its much like the fifth wheel of a semi, minus the side to side pivot for semi fifth wheels.
    While it does have the 24 k gross and 4,500 tongue it is still useful for as what you demonstrated, it is definitely a good redesign over their original hitch and most useful for towing kingpin (fifth wheel) goosenecks with the adapter which I am sure one can buy a few more adapters if they have more than one trailer with kingpin connection. There are however a few types of pickups that can haul the max trailer weight as well as handle the max tongue weight, namely Heavy/Super Duty class pickups, but as i said, this is more versatile than that for lighter gooseneck style trailers. All the more so those with flatbeds can also use this on those bodies for when they need or have such trailers to haul.
    If i had a need for one I would get this model for sure and a few extra adapters so I do not have to fiddle around with relocating one from trailer to trailer. I do say though that you should have waited until getting the neodymium magnet instead of making holes in your RV, but that is more secure...but with magnets you could easily move from one to another trailer.
    I am an experienced class A CDL driver, have towed gooseneck as well.
