Hey Reese, paint the bar in the window white. That way we can see it while we’re filling the air bag in low light. I have a Gen 2 and love it. I put a piece of white duck tape on the bar and it works great.

I am so glad you pointed that out about the way someone would have to fill it with air. It's almost like the engineers was laughing at consumers on how a person is supposed to fill the bellow. I understand they want less parts to fail but a simple angle or a different fitting can fix that whole issue. Awesome video, thank you for sharing.

Why don’t you use a chuck that is used to fill dually tires. It kind of hangs down and has a double ended fill. It looks like that’s what they had in mind when the designed the placement of the schrader fill

  • @kellyyoung124
    @kellyyoung124 ปีที่แล้ว +2

My solution for a air chuck to use with my M18 compressor is Milton s-699 or s-690 1/4" air chuck (either will work) and then a use Milton S-684-4 1/4" NPT Tank valve on the end of the air chuck. That will then allow you to connect a portable screw on compressor hose to the air chuck!

Installed the Reese goosebox two years ago after watching JDs reviews. Absolutely love it. Don’t see me ever going to a standard fifth wheel hitch. If you install hooks on both ends of you’re safety chains and a eyebolt rated the same as you’re chains on the bottom of the goosebox you can disconnect you’re safety chains without getting in the bed of the truck everytime you reconnect while traveling. With this setup you won’t need to get in the bed everything will be reachable from the back of the truck. The goosebox ride is awesome. Their really are no downsides

I thought the multi pro was was a gimmick when I got my 3/4 ton Denali . Now on my second truck with it (dually) I love it, makes hooking up the fifth wheel that much easier. We went with the Gen-Y instead of the Reese and after a year on the road with it I love it. I looked at the Reese but didn't want an air bag and shock to deal with.

Thanks for the video. I replaced my Gen 2 with a Gen 3 (warranty replacement). I’ve added a 90* extension elbow to the fill valve so now the fill point in straight up. So far, works fine. Mine demonstrated the same issue as yours in that when dropping the coupler onto the ball, the lock doesn’t spring into the locked position. It almost makes it into the locked position but needs a little push to get the arm fully forward. Seems there is a very slight bind. Also, the cable hanger is not as long on the Gen 3 as it was on the Gen 2 so it’s a little more difficult to get the arm into the unlocked position using the cable stop device. Looking forward to the first pull with the Gen 3.

I went with the Anderson hitch simply because it was easier to install on a camper i was purchasing vs having to completely redo a hitch and worry if it would work/have hardware etc. I planned to buy a goosebox but the more i look at it the more problems it seems to create. With the Anderson it does take up space in the bed but it seems the goosebox also limits storage space possibly more when turning. Id really like to get one but it honestly looks like more of a hassle

I talked to support 6 months ago about my issue with filling the bag. (Gen 2 with updated valve underneath). Told them that a portable compressor can’t fill the bag. I ended up threading on an extension and mounting it back by the release handle like the previous gens.

Reese, I highly recommend you paint a white line (about 1 1/2 inch wide) on the top center of the Goosebox, this line really makes hitching up easier because I can see where the center of the hitch is and can easily align it up with my ball as I'm backing up.

    • @flash8051

Yep...I actually just put a 4" strip of orange electrical tape on the center and use a magnetic telescoping hitch centering with a yellow ball on top. Got it dialed in now and works great!

I’m sure to get crucified by the Ford fanboys, but I was hopeful that Ford was going to update their tailgate design with this new ‘23 refresh. I totally LOVE my ‘21 Superduty but as a Goosebox user I would love to have the bed steps to help with hitching. The GM design drop down tailgate would just be awesome, too.

I have a Gen II Reese goose box hitch. It's easy to hook up with a Ford dually, step on the outside rim, and makes hook up easy. Consider the Gen Y hitch, torsion bar technology, garbage technology doesn't hold up over years of use.

I am.looking on-line at the 16K# version, it looks like the shrader valve connection is in the bottom on that model instead of the top. I am not sure if that is a modification they made as a result of customer feedback or just the difference compared to the 20K# model. I am comparing this 16K# Goosebox to the 4500# GenY for the Brinkley Z 2900 with an estimated 2100-2600# pin weight. The Goosebox appeals to me because we had the Air Force airbag pin box on our 2009 Excel 5W that reduced 99% of the detectable chucking on the standard pin box we had before. Thanks for the info. Good video JD. I've got the gen 2 on my 5er (much smaller than yours). I've also got a newer Chevy with the flex tailgate, I still cant quite reach the place to hook my safety chains up in the bed. I'm considering putting clevis hooks on both ends of my chains and putting rated shackles in the bolt holes on the goose ball where the chains bolt thru and just leave the chains connected to the truck. This way I can reach to hook them up without crawling inside the truck bed. I've sent an email to Reese asking if it would be safe to do this, so far no response. So far I love the Gen 2.

That air could be filled easily with a dual tire style air chuck, you have both the forward and backward fill, considering what you drive , you should have one, nothing wrong with that filler.

  • @flash8051

Haha...The FIRST thing I thought of when I saw this new design for the air valve was..."WHY did they put that thing down inside the slot where it's A: Hard to reach and B: Hard to fill with a standard air chuck??"
It does seem like a dually dual footed chuck with the "pull on" reverse fill opening would work?
Makes no sense to me....I have had the Gen. 2 on my Montana for going on 8 years or so and often wondered if the next version would have a more accessible valve. Guess not.
Yeah, seems like they would have been able to make the "bar in the window" white. Simple, cheap and for $1600 would be nice at have!
Also, I'm quite surprised that the welding on the Gen. 3 with the "new and improved" multi piece hitch body doesn't have full welds around the entire seam? At least not looking at the front (nose) of the hitch.

The welds on the Goosebox look like they sent it down to the local high school for a training project. For as much $$ as these are get some better welders. A;so you pointed out the grade 8 hardware but what about the safety chains? Zinc coated chains are usually garbage. Grade 70 are usually CAD plated.

I have a gen 2 Goosebox that I love. I hate the position of the air inflator on the gen 3. Often I forget to check the air before I hitch up and there is no way I can climb into the truckbed to fill the Goosebox with air once I have it hitched up. Additionally, I am often traveling multiple days where I never unhitch, so, I wouldn't be able to check the air in the Goosebox during those trips. Reese, you really, really, messed up when you decided to place that inflator on the top/center of the gen 3. By-the-way, that was the first thing I thought of when I saw the gen 3. I can not recommend the gen 3 because of this inflator location, unlike the gen 2 which I have wholeheartedly recommended for years (I was an early adopter of the gen 2). Reese, please quickly admit that you missed the mark on this inflator location and move it back to the side like the gen 2.

My 20" Weather Guard is too wide and blocks the Ford camera view. Is there a saddle toolbox that does not restrict the goose neck ball view??? I think a low profile 15-15.5" wide would work but can't seem to find a toolbox manufacturer (Weatherguard, UWS, CamLocker, RKI) that makes one. This appears to be a gap in the toolbox market to me. I've got a 22 Chevy std bed crew cab. I can get to very near 90 degrees, although the limiting factor is the small spoiler Chevy decided to mount to the rear top of the cab to mount the 3rd brake light into. Without that spoiler, I could get to a full 90 no doubt.

how is that valve stem any different than a bicycle valve stem. it seems like you are making it way too difficult.

I’m sorry but that residential wiring box on your hitch is a prime example of what’s wrong with rv construction. Not weather rated at all. Total cost $1.26. A shame.

Don’t look like much of a upgrade. My gen II is great. Easy for me to inflate if needed.

That chuck design is laughably bad. I air up every time I tow. On a long tow, I'll generally stop at least once and check, often needing to add a little air. I mean, who on earth thought that wasa a good idea, the old design is SO much better.
The other thing they didn't fix, that big pin in the front of the Goosebox will eventually gall/rust. It's a steel to steel joint with no way to put grease in to prevent wear and rust. That pin should be drilled for a zerk on both sizes so you can pump grease into that joint. I pull mine apart every few months to grease it, but there's no reason I should have to do that, just put a zerk there Reese! Cost you about 10 bucks, save your customers hours every year.

Looks like a huge pain in the ass. I'll stick with the Gen2.

I got a gen2 6 months ago, and it came with this same exact air valve, but it was underneath. They had updated gen2 near the end of its production life. Wasn’t a fan, but I added an extension hose on so now I can use my cordless compressor for it.
