Nostalgia is on par with Cardamine at this point lmao, these types of reminiscing are such a breath of fresh air, and it's so good to go back in time and to really peer into the window of past to see what made freelancer and the mod great overall. It really feels like back then the players dictated the environment the community was in rather than anything else. Hearing about moonbasealpha as always is nice, and it hits close to home that my career also started out with the Outcasts.. Despite all those factions, I initially tried to be just another freelancer, with a bias toward outcast guns, until as you already explained it, Liberty didn't really like the idea of. After my exile, I tried going around Sirius and never really finding my place in either of the houses.. Bretonia came closest and Leeds of all places to be specific, but this location put me in a clear view of the Taus and Omegas, both of them converging on the Omicrons. Back then I took my time, explored the area around Gran Canaria (oh god the memes) took a peek into the lives of the Coalition, checked out the Archon and what he was up to with the Reapers, hunted bounty hunters for sport, debated philosophy with nomads.. until I went back, did my part in the various Tau wars, peeked at what the IMG was doing, started wreck hunting, went to see what is the buzz about this new house that are seemingly unstoppable until I inevitably stopped and settled on Ibiza. Not even sure if my first character was limited to just one version of discovery, I'm pretty sure I started during 4.85 when bombers could still equip vhf weapons, but I also remember being a 4.84 player because I was screwing around in the -at the time- still working campaign that was horribly unbalanced. Lasted until the last few days of 4.87, man it was such a wild ride and can't really complain about any part of it, maybe the fact that the community's attitude towards the game, unwritten rules and whatnot shifted so dramatically that it wasn't really the same mod I grew so fond of
And not to advertise, but what you said in these videos resonated with me so well because you repeat so many of the qualities I am trying to incorporate in my mod.. no restarts, you only get to choose your house so you have to commit to your character, so it feels valuable and not easily ditched. Guard IFF and ID being a sort of bragging right, but at the same time limiting access to the very high end equipment so players cant cheese the system just by being wealthy enough.. which in theory should also promote players acting as equipment dealers and so on.
Discovery was really something else, can't forget classics like the Harris Syndrome (actually not entirely sure if thats what it was called.. you know, the best god damned trade route where people traded with harris and the battleship lol) 21 turrets of neutrality, were at war no rp anymore, Asco Fiasco, capital missile spam, countermeasures that no cd could ignore.. and the list goes on
Sorry for yapping lmao but right now it feels like the days of your first Avorion playthrough, just eagerly waiting the next video so my shitty memory can be reminded about some more details of the good old days
