For amazing music (and music that changes as you roam and engage with the world) I recommend trying NieR:Automata. That's easily the best done dynamic soundtrack in gaming. 43 songs, almost every one of them has 3 variations (quiet, medium, dynamic) and there's vocals and no vocals versions. So most songs have 6 versions. Doesn't stop there, the game has an algorithm that can convert any of its songs into 8-bit versions on the fly. So there can be 7 versions of 1 song. Then theres a few songs that have "become as gods" and "this cannot continue" mixes. The official ost says 43 songs, but if you include all versions of the songs there's probably closer to 150-200 songs in the game. All of which can be played in-game in the resistance camp with the jukebox. Very very different kind of music from ghost of tsushima(sci fi), but the quality is unmatched and I think you'll enjoy it.
Just started this game on PS5. I found the opening scene extremely dull and uninspiring. Just would have skipped the scenes if was allowed to. Riding through the tall grass was nice, combat of this game feels absolutely excellent (easily the best part). But acting, character design, boring side and main quests.... I just find it really grindy.
The charm this game has is better than any game I’ve ever experienced. They made fetch quests actually worth doing because the world building was 10/10. Great story, epic mp mode and very good dlc. One of the best games I’ve ever played. Fuck it got me into photo mode ffs
Jake you totally should keep going. Take it all the way to 2003. One of my favorite things to do is be reminded of great games of the past. Like the last of us came out ten years ago! Wow!
From the last decade, my top game is without a doubt RDR2 !! I can go back to it any day, spend the entire day on it , and still feel that immersion, that excitement. I'll never stop enjoy this game
I love Jake...dude stops himself and doesn't spoil a 2 year old game in Metroid Dread...yet Falcon just goes and says random bits about a game that came out like a month ago. Appreciate you Jake :) love that thoughtfulness.
Yeah, there are some people who think 6 months after a game being released can be spoiled completely. Probably people who aren't busy and spend all their money on games/pre-orders.
I much prefer Jake to Falcon, cause Falcon rambles on about things and tries to be funny whereas Jake just gives us all the relevant information whilst being as spoiler free as possible.
My only thought would be in 2019 and it being Sekiro. That game was built to perfection and even though it had a large gap in figuring out the gameplay but once you did it was like dancing with swords. The timing, cadence, rhythm of the battles; amazing boss fights, the character arc and story was built flawlessly, to the incredible boss fights. I know most people will say bloodborne but I will die on this hill that sekiro is the greatest fromsoft game ever made!!
I should try it again. I’ve bought the odd game, started playing and quit because I wasn’t enjoying them and just “going through the motions.” But in 20 years of gaming I can honestly say that Sekiro was the first that I quit because I found it mechanically too difficult. I just couldn’t get my parry down. Lol
@@carpediem6431 I would definitely suggest trying it again; use genichiro in the castle as a practice dummy, because he is the first (outside of optional madame butterfly) that plays like how the game should be played and can be used to master parry. The way to get used to parrying for someone trying to get used to it is hold block the entire time and when you see a strike coming then tap block again, by holding block you are able to take more hits, your posture is going to rise quickly but you’re not at risk of just getting chopped down immediately, then once you have that down you can move to not having block held the whole time; ALSO a MUST is to unlock mekiri counter!!!!!
Control needs more voice from big people, such an amazing game that went under the radar. Hopefully AW2 will kickoff some interest with the Remedy Connected Universe.
No it didn’t. Control is the game that put remedy on the map. The game sold over 3 millions copies and was nominated for a slew of awards. Including winning a game award and a BAFTA award.

I truly loved Ghosts of Tsushima and after I’d finished it it gave me a feeling I hadn’t felt for a long time (having played games for 30 years) although I can’t explain why. It’s in my top 5 all time favourites.
Same here 40years of gaming and ghost of tsushima is in my top 3. Now maybe baldurs Gate 3 at 1. Farcry 3 at 2. I also liked AC origins, tropico 6, rdr 1 and gta v.
Ik what you’re talking about. Had the same thing with BoTW a few years ago and something else, very unique, when I played ToTK. With Tears I took my time, avoided teleportation as much as I could, tried to make Link wear clothing that felt the most appropriate without repeating too much and … wow. It took my about 5-6 months to beat it and when I did it felt impactful. I got Ghost of Tsushima a few months ago but I’m waiting till next year to play it so I can enjoy it more

Agreed with yall on so many of these lol • Ghost of Tsushima- absolutely • Control- Obviously • Red Dead 2- Unquestionably • DOOM 2016- Legendary • Witcher 3- Flawlessness • The Last of Us- Iconic
Man, I'm not a big fan of Ghost of Tsushima even though I'm weeb, but objectively speaking I admit that game is one of the best games ever made. They did so many things so well there. If not for Sekiro I would give GoT the best samurai game out there.
I loved GoT but cmon its got some flaws. Stealth sucks, especially considering its supposed to be tied in to the story, and it definitely suffered from open world filler/busy work, idk why everyone always claims it doesn. 49 fox dens were ridiculous...
I still play Ghost of Tsushima to this day, I platinumed it a while ago and I’m recently did new game plus and left most the side activities for stuff to do after the story, just finished the dlc story and now just have all the side material, I absolutely love the game, one of the most memorable games in recent years
Same, I still play it to this day. I finished the DLC recently, it was so worth it. I love the game so much, it will always be one of my favorite games. The DLC is now one of my favorite things about it. Iki Island is amazing
Control is one of my favourite games of the decade. Has an original story and setting, great gameplay and physics, and is very stylish. I instantly felt like I was playing one of those old school 3rd person PC shooters, like MDK, but with a much more modern feel. Remedy is such a solid studio, I've loved their games since the original Max Payne
@@gokuafricano you are not , some channels even mention it in the worst games of 2019 category, I don't get why gameranx praise it so much , it can be good for some people but goty level ? absolutely not
Control definitely is a masterpiece, glad to see it here. Personally, its a tie between Arkham Knight and Witcher 3 for me for 2015 , but Witcher 3 wins in terms of story, Arkham Knight wins in terms of gameplay mechanics (the cape physics was mindblowing).
If you tried arguing GOTY for Arkham Knight in 2015 you would be bullied lol. The game really has aged well and I've always loved it despite the initial criticism it received.
2022: God of war ragnarok 2021: Rachel and clank rift apart 2020: Ghost of tsushima 2019: sekiro 2018: Red dead redemption 2017: Horizon zero dawn 2016: Uncharted 4
For me, Dragon Age Inquisition was the best game the year it came out. It brought the series back from the dead, and made me fall in love with that world again.
Control is masterpiece and love it. I have all the games in this list. I have such big game collections but above all Control has special place in my heart. Thanks jake, great video mate.
Ashtray maze is still my single favorite level in any video ever. I love it so much I even jam out to the song “Take Control” while cleaning or something.
@@onr-o1h I never really got into RDR 1 or 2 (i know its criminal), I have a huge backlog of games I just haven’t been able to get to as Im a single parent and cant game all the time so I have to really choose which ones to focus on. But aside from the Ashtray maze my second favorite level is also a Remedy game, the new Alan Wake im fact with a certain musical number performed during a level, it was freaking wild and I loved it.
At this point it's just criminal that Rockstar hasn't done anything with RDR2 on current-gen. Even a minimal 1440p/60fps uprezed to 4K via FSR2 or TAAU w/fast loading a la current gen GTAV priced at $10 for early buyers before going to $20 would be hard to pass up. I mean, I want Rockstar making the most proper, fully fledged, built to take full advantage of current gen hardware while being truly consumer friendly version of RDR2 possible. I'm just saying that in this day and age of minimal effort/full price remasters RDR2 deserves some love asap.
2014 for me Shadow of Mordor no doubt. One of the best and fun games I have ever played. Story is awesome. Enviorement is awesome. Characters are awesome. The nemesis system was just special. Everything about that game was great. Still has a special place in my heart.
My game of all times is Elden Ring. Granted, it was one of my first games I played after 30+ years of doing other things so there was a "first love" thing going on. It is just so wonderful and captivating. I hope there will be another game that I'll love that much.

2018 was so stacked between gow, Sekiro, and rdr2. It was impossible for everyone to be happy, but each of those communities is still proving how deserving each one was
@@thelegandgamer2830 we can walk on foot in rdr2. And its better than a rail game with corridor where every move you do is what developpers want... With the combat too arcade and pathetic.
I wish more period piece games would come out. Rdr2 is my favourite game ever because of the well crafted story and the excellent setting. I hope companies like rockstar continue to make these style games because I would love to see another game that takes place in the 40s, like an LA Noire 2, a WW1 game, maybe with Jack marston, or any game that can nail the atmosphere and characters of whatever time period as well as games like red dead and La noire have done.
Same! I loved rdr2 so much! It's the reason why I eventually bought a ps4 when I wasn't really ever planning on getting one originally. And I never regretted it for a second! 😅
Sekiro deserved the GOTY award 100%, It was a phenomenal game from start to finish, with one of the best combat systems ever, nothing was more satifying and fun in comparison that year. Bloodborne also deserved GOTY over The witcher 3, honestly Bloodborne might be a great contender for one of the best games of all time, amazing atmosphere, combat, bosses, level design, story etc...
Well if it helps, there is no such thing as GOTY, not in the sense that one single game gets it that year. Every outlet etc puts out their own version of GOTY. It really just means our favourite game this year. Also, didn't Sekiro get any GOTY anywhere? The Game Awards maybe? I thought it did. The whole thing is entirely subjective anyway, people put far too much importantance on it. It's nice but meaningless.
@@Elwaves2925 yeah sekiro did get the game awards. I know game ranking is subjective for the most part, but you can't disagree that there is an objective side to all of this, there are games that are better than others regardless of which one you like more, It's a mix between objective comparison from a design standpoint and what a game offers, and subjective opinion of which game people love more.
I actually disagree pretty strongly that Ghost of Tsushima seems like a typical open-world game at first. I feel like the first hour of that game beats you over the head with the fact that you're experiencing something special. It did for me, anyway.
My list. 2022: Horizon: Forbidden West 2021: Returnal 2020: Last of Us Part 2 2019: Control 2018: God of War 2017: Horizon: Zero Dawn 2016: Uncharted 4 2015: Until Dawn 2014: Infamous: Second Son 2013: The Last of Us 2012 (Bonus): Journey
That isn't what makes a GOTY. GTA V is a popular game, but not a great game. And it's not helped by the fact that Rockstar turned it into a means of printing money. GTA V also wasn't compelling enough to inspire a truly enjoyable live-action adaptation
Objectively speaking, TLOU 1 is better than GTA 5. But I personally have a lot more fun playing GTA 5 than TLOU 1. So I personally would give GOTY 2013 to GTA 5.

i played demon souls back in 2010 in my friends apartment while he was working. I stayed there for a week when finding this game. Now years later i have completed all the dark souls games and elden ring was my fauvorite. if anyone is to experience elden ring like i experienced demon souls they are blessed!
@@andrerocha3998 I dont know. I love Dark Souls 3 and it was excellent but also feel like a compilation of previous Dark Souls for pleasing fans. 2022- GOW Ragnarok : Elden Ring was great but GOWR just scratched an itch especially with the characters and how the story cilmaxes. 2021- RE: Viilage : Simply fun its actually one of my favourite games despite the flaws and the writing being pretty meh at best 2020- Doom Eternal: Was genuinely surprised with this because i thought it would a copy paste of Doom 16 but for me it advances the doom formula in all the right ways 2019- Sekiro: Probably the best combat in any game for me. Really love what from soft did with a more story focused souls game 2018- RDR2: Combat can feel repeititve at times but the level of detail and story are exquisite. 2017- P5: Loved the story and turnbased combat never felt so fresh prior or since this game (although BG3 is close) 2016- Uuncharted 4: Great linear game and the climax was amazing and the acting overall was so good 2015: The Witcher 3: probably my favourite game of all time. Was looking forward to it like no other game because witcher 2 really changed how i viewed games. 2014: South Park Stick of Truth: weak year imo but this would have been a contender in a strong year because the writing was so good; couldnt really sink my teeth into Inquisition even though i tried which was a game of the year contender at the time 2013: Last of Us although i've only played the remake directly. I thought the storytelling and acting again were very strong. Other than that game Bioshock infinite was also really good.
I love Control!!! I'm glad it's getting the recognition it deserves! Fun innovative game play! It's unique and amazing! Best game of 2019! It's Challenging like a souls game. The enemies hit like a tank! The most difficult game I have completed 100 percent.
My personal top 10 for the same years: 2013: Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance 2014: Bayonetta 2 2015: Bloodborne 2016: Dark Souls III 2017: Hollow Knight (though would really want to put Nier: Automata here as well) 2018: Monster Hunter: World 2019: Pathologic 2 2020: Cyberpunk 2077 2021: Solar Ash 2022: Elden Ring Not much overlap but all the games in the video I find to be great as well.
Only difference I would have made is because I'm not a soulslike fan and because it already got a slot with the well deserved elden ring, I would have marked Shadow Of Mordor GOTY for that year. The Nemesis system is just too much of a juicy beaut. Plus running around stabbing orcs *never* got old. It was pure simple fun that Shadow of war really expanded on.
Shadow of mordor was my shyt💯 i loved the brutality it had. It reminded me of batman arkham knight and to me thats one of the best games ive played to this day. I can only wish for a port to the new gens at this point
I liked The Last of Us Part II. But Final Fantasy VII Remake was Game of the Year for me! I do know though that there were a lot of people that just saw that the game killed off Joel, and people got mad because of it. But I see what they were trying to show people, and so many people missed the point…. I think two things would’ve helped had they of done things differently. One, we should’ve played as Abby way longer before she killed off Joel, and two, as bad as it sounds. But I’d be willing to bet money that if they would’ve made her more attractive, and not this hulking man. Then people would’ve been more sympathetic to her and her story, and would’ve been more understanding.
I honestly got over joel dying, I just didn't find abby or the story overall that appealing, I got the point as it was a simple point honestly and it had great moments and some...questionable ones but personally I preferred Ghost of Tsushima far more than tlou2 from the world to the characters to the story
@@gamestar6479 I just really enjoyed the gameplay and combat! I didn’t mind the story, I don’t think it was as good as the first game. But I felt like it was still pretty good. I just recently purchased a PS5 and completed God of War Ragnarok 100% complete. I loved the storyline, the graphics, and the game. This is the only game I own, and I am looking to purchase more games. I quit Warcraft because of the aimlessly farming and grinding and cash to play. The game got old and felt like a constant grind and farm machine with no end. I was debating on purchasing Diablo 4 ( I've read D4 is a cash grab and aimlessly farming, no clue) Witcher 3, Lies of P, Elden Ring, Ghost of Tsushima, Jedi Survivor, and Baldurs Gate.. Any suggestions, and is Playstation Plus mandatory or worth it?
Witcher 3 is a must play, and for PS Plus, if you subscribe to the upper tiers of it you get an enormous game catalogue that is only getting bigger. I’d say it’s worth it if you see games you would like to play on the list.
@mitchscott8394 Ty sir, just bought the Wircher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition for $14.99 😆 and Star Wars Survivor with the Deluxe Digital upgrade for $40 and $15 for the upgrade 😀

I played, loved and even platinumed Ghost of Tsushima, but it doesn’t hold a candle to TLOU Part II in my opinion. That one is one of the most conceptually brilliant games ever made. Ghost of Tsushima was really fun, but it was still a very formulaic video game that in large parts still feels like the same stuff we’ve seen for years. TLOU2 raised the bar on every level and tried to do something new with the video game genre.
@@pg9193I wouldn't go that far. Bloodborne lacks in character and story, and it's ost is short. It's base game bosses mostly suck or are meh with some good ones sprinkled in. It's DLC bosses are of higher quality but really depend on the players flavor for bosses. I hate big dumb loud monsters, so bloodbornes bosses don't impress me for the most part. But lady maria is my exact cup of tea and one of my favorite bosses of all time. Certainly my favorite fromsoft boss. If bloodborne had better story and characters then I'd see an argument for it being the debatable best. I certainly would agree that it's the best fromsoft game hands down even if it's bosses kinda suck with an occasional good one sprinkled in. But I firmly believe the greatest game of all time MUST have a story worth considering greatest of all time for gaming too. Fromsoft don't do good stories, they do good lore. Miyazaki games don't really tell stories, they tell worlds, histories and environments. There's not much in the way of story in his games. His characters share a similar status. Very little information provided on them, they're obscure mysterious, not all that active and social in their games. They're S tier in gameplay, lore, world design and art direction, but B to A- Tier in OST, but negligible in story and characters.

Yuh and 2021 is easily Returnal. Hard games are not being acknowledged in the later years
I should try it again.
It is a masterpiece - totally agree with you.
lol I do totally prefer blood borne but sekiro is equal and sword saint iishin is my fav boss fight

As good as The Last of Us was in 2013, I think GTA V was a significantly bigger achievement in the gaming industry.
But TLoU was the better game. And considerably more original than the generic GTA

Then people would’ve been more sympathetic to her and her story, and would’ve been more understanding.

I totally agree with this list but 2022's GOTY for me was definitely God of War Ragnarök...looking back, i feel it was altogether a different experience that not many games are able to deliver.
Elden Ring ended GoW Ragnarok. The hype and love for that game is unmatched. This is one of the only times Game award was handed to the right game.
Same! Ragnarok was a fantastic game.
@@Skytopia69 thats your own opinion
Both good
Ragnarok was mid af, the first one was way better + it was competing against Elden Ring bruh cmon 😂
Alan wake 2 should be goty
A lot of people would say "Witcher 3" but I would say "Bloodborne".
Yeah, witcher 3 ain't even close to how untouchably good Bloodborne is. Bloodborne may even be the best game of all time
@@pg9193I wouldn't go that far.
@@trevorveillette8415 "Ma! the fedora guy got out again and is umm actuallying people!"
@@pg9193 your reply is kinda funny since I didn't use "actually" even once.
I'm just explaining why bloodborne isn't a suitable candidate for best game of all time.
@@trevorveillette8415 ahem ummm actually you can say umm actually without actually saying it. all of your points were trash, brother. you obviously don't read books, and therefore Bloodborne did nothing to your imagination, because you don't have one. you just play video games.
I am glad to see Darks souls 2 getting some love, it wasn't perfect, I hade my own gripes with it, but at the end of the day I think it still deserves to stand proudly next to all the other souls games, not to be looked down on. Also I understand why Sekiro is not in this list, it would make this video essentially From Software top 10, but such refined combat is still unmatched in my opinion and set a goal for anyone who wants to make a great and challenging action game.
Yes, i love ds2
@@hyper0505 Me 2 bro. This would have ben a Fromsoft list if they actually stood true to what was really the best games each year.
I think sekiro is far superior to any souls games in terms of combat. It’s so clean and satisfying.
@@tyler2102... if you look at it without build variety and different ways you can approach combat and focus only on the combat flow itself... than definitely yes. Otherwise it's highly debatable.
@@AlexCatable build variety lol souls involve picking either a slow weapon a fast weapon or magic. That’s about all your build variety, stop dribbling nonsense.
2017 what a crazy year for gaming! Persona 5 was my personal GOTY. Nier Automata runner-up
Funny, I would have expected a different pick from someone with your profile picture...
That would have been my pick, btw.
Honestly in everything but exploration they were better than BtoW and Horizon wich were the most awarded games of 2017
but you know how it is nowadays open world gets all the hype and help
We JRPGs lovers are really a minority here 😂. GR teams very rarely gushing about jrpgs, and there's not many comments (and likes) about them from the community either, oh well..
@@DarkprosperHollow knight is my fav game of all time(more than fromsoft games) , but that doesn't mean it is goty. It had it's flaws
Love this video! Kinda wish it was 30min. Long and you talked about runner ups from those years
It's crazy how RDR2, a game from 2018, _still_ looks better and has a more compelling story than any game that's come out since. Makes me pumped to see what GTA 6 will be like
In Control if you read the stuff through out the game you come to find out that the gun you acquire shape shifts and was apparently excalibur and mjolnir and i think there was some other weapon but i can't remember what now. It totally made the gun feel that much more badass haha
