Based on your recommendation in your quilted coat review video, i made the Hovea jacket and i love it! I used a factory quilted bedspread i bought at a thrift shop so it cost me only $9. I made the mid-length with the collar band. Thank you very much for your videos.
Just found you! So glad. Tuning in from southern Connecticut, USA - about 45 minutes outside of NY City. Loved your video - very informative. Now I have to go back and watch the rest! My goal in 2025 is to get back to sewing my own clothes, which I learned from my mom 40-45 years ago! I’ve mostly being repairing and up cycling old clothes so I’m on the hunt for patterns. Looking forward to your next one!
Favorite overall pattern: Cielo top from Closet Core. Like you talked about it’s an easy win for me to get through a down time. I’m also ready to go for the Seasons of East dress, thank you so much for helping others by sewing and sharing! Your time and honesty is so very helpful and appreciated. Hope for a 2025 full of interesting and inspiring makes. ❤
Thanks to you I have made three Sewing Bee quilted jackets and a sleeveless one. I lengthened the bodice and sleeves of the jacket, (I,m 5.10), and covered all raw edges with bias tape in a contrasting colour on the reverse side. They all came out beautiful! Two of them I kept for myself, one my granddaughter chose for her Christmas present. Such a good pattern!
I think using the same pattern again and again is a great idea. If something feels good, why not. I have made several Sew Me Something Jessica dresses in a range of fabric with varied sleeve choices. Happy days !
Sam, I'm enjoying your review of your 2024 sewing. You're always so thoughful in your assessments. You've inspired me to give more careful thoughts to my future sewing plans. I even printed out the Year Compass booklet you mentioned. I also joined the Closet Core Crew when it first started. It is exciting to see that new pattern each month, but I didn't make any. This year I made an effort to sew some of them up - after all, I've already paid for them! I enjoy wearing the ones I've made so far. I'm planning to make the Moonlight Dress out of some fabric I picked up in Japan last fall when we were there to visit our son and family. My most purchased and used patterns are from Love Notions. They draft for a 5' 5" body, exactly my height. They also include full bust adjustment front option on most of their tops and dresses and they've started including a full belly adjustment piece as well. They also have a lot of online resources available to help you adjust and construct their patterns.
My favorite this year has definitely been the Pattern Scout Comfi lounge tee and pants set. They fit me so well and I have hacked the life out of them. It’s drafted for knits but I have made the pants with a woven. I have added in seam pockets, patch pockets from and back. It’s kind of like a sloper for me. The tee is fitted, but not tight and I have added cuffs and changed the neck line. I’ve gotten miles out of these patterns. I enjoyed the hits and the misses, always something to learn in both.
I'm a big jalie fan (a Canadian sewing pattern maker). I love the Marie Claude (Raglan Jersey t-shirts), and the 3243 (pull on pants) is also a favorite of mine (perfect pajama pants), and the Sylvie pants, which is a secret pajama (get a fancy Ponte and you have the perfect stylish and comfortable pant). Other than that, I've made quite a few vogue 1622. One for me and one for each of my 2 brothers. It looks very stylish, although I should open slits on mine for the hips.
Your opinion on “flattering” is right on! Someone close to me said women over 40 should dress their age and not like young girls. I have no idea why I felt it was directed at me, because I’ve never worn ill-fitting or inappropriate clothing, but I took it as an insult! Of course! My response is when they designate ready to wear clothing sections into departments as “Grandmas”, “Over 40”, etc. then I’ll dress my age! I definitely have some fitting issues that I’m self conscious about but I’m doing pretty good at making tops that are comfortable in the sense of ease, and sense of being stylish without being totally covered. My favorite pattern is the one I copied from a ready to wear. I’d love to see some of your makes with specific pieces from other patterns. I’m anxious to go back and watch some of your previous videos. I don’t think I found you until October or November.
So many gorgeous makes! The Seasons of East dress is just wonderful - and I love the Sewing Bee quilted jackets, too. I think I need to revisit quilted jackets :) Happy New Year!
Must make the Summer in New York Dress in 2025. Every time I see it I think,”That’s my style”. I’m spending some time to plan more “intentional” sewing for next year. This is a great vlog
Your idea of ‘flattering’ is completely different to mine. I understand what you mean, but my take on the word is whether something is flattering to me…it’s the right size, the right shape, and a colour which I like. As long as I like it, it doesn’t concern me a great deal what someone else thinks. Although it’s rather nice to get a compliment on what I’m wearing. Maybe it’s an age/generation thing. I’m 72. With best wishes and thanks for your always interesting videos. Helen
Thanks for the video! My favourite is the Toaster by Sew House Severn but I have sewn from Tilly and the Buttons Stretch book too. Thanks for your success suggestions,I am tempted by all of them! Happy New Year 🥳
Absolutely and emphatically agree with your views on ‘flattering’ and the patriarchal views! I work in a primary school and am regularly empowering the children to be the best version of themselves and encouraging them to smash stereotypes and perceptions x
Love the video, subscribed. I live the fact you talk about the fails.... I've made the surgical gown before and you're so right it's about the pattern being too small!!
I love how considered you are about everything, the Cosy Handmade dress looks amazing, it looks like it might give my current favourite the Kielo wrap dress a run for it's money. Also want to try the Naya, sewing the basics is so satisfying. Have you looked at the Juno trousers, shout out for the Vera top as another long sleeved free pattern! Which I know you also like.
Thank you so much for messaging about our exterior outlook on our lives. As long as you feel good in your clothing, that's all that matters ❤ There is only one you...honor it! Have a beautiful 2025 😊
I always love your pattern picks. I try to look in my stash if I have something similar. In the Netherlands we have subscriptions to sewing magazines which come out every month with loads of patterns for a relatively low price. Sometimes I do buy single patterns (still thinking about that beautiful seasons dress) because instructions tend to be really bad with some of those Dutch magazines. But I do have some really nice patterns that I have used over and over. Often, if left with scraps, I will make a matching scarf.
I’ve made the Pietra pants a few times - shorts version. Love it, but I’ve found the fit changes with different fabrics. I’m going to try sizing down like you.
My go to tee, tank is the TidalTop from LoveNotions. I’ve made the tank 8 times and finally thought I should try the short sleeve T-shirt and finally a 3/4 sleeve. It’s been a fave for sure. I even used the arm schye from the sleeveless tank onto the sleeveless BrynnCardi “vest” view from TrueBias. It was a much better fit
A really useful vlog for me, (being 5’1” with a round bum 🤣), I will be trying the trousers 👍. My most made pattern this year was Grainline Studio Archer shirt, I’ve made 5 and 3 SOI Pussy Bow Blouses ❤
I am working on the closet Core free pattern also. What I do like about it is the marking. It shows the waist and the apex on the bust. I have a long torso to the waist, so I need to add length, I am short on the bottom half so I just take it off the bottom and add it above the waist. I also had to drop the apex, most patterns have the pointing at the top of my bra( ok I have to drop the by 1 1/2 inches). Nice to have that info so you can make the pattern fit with less guess work. I know most people say it doesn't matter in knits, but when the knit wants to climb when you wear them, that change can be important.
One other favorite of mine is The Ogden top pattern. I have made two, one in a black crepe, one in a white cotton lace. The latter I lined fully. I moved the straps slightly away from my shoulders in orden to give a better fit.
💜 thank you for being brave enough to show your pattern fails. And I agree with your comments about the term "flattering" and body size and shape. I believe in "Every Body is a Good Body". My comment on the pants with the big pockets on the hips, is that the pockets are out of proportion to the pants. Different pockets might work better PS what is travertine? I'm in the US and I don't know that term
Love your makes I agree I wear makes that make me feel good I love the Bob pants and style arc Sydney dress which I have used the bodice for other makes Happy 2025 🎉🎉🎉😊
My most used sewing pattern (ever) is the Style Arc Harriet jacket. This was my first jacket project and I loved the finished garment; luckily no adjustments needed. I've made it in bouclé, twill, denim and a shower proof fabric which wasn't a good choice. You hit the nail on the head by saying not all fabrics match the pattern and what I didn't realise was this fabric was non iron, not even using a pressing cloth! I live and learn!
My favourite is a big four, McCalls 7022 view F. It's a skirt I've made four times because it really suits my style. Of course, the sizing is all wrong on these patterns! On the chart my measurements have me as size 16 but, through trial and error, the correct size for me is a 10. My advice is always to measure the pattern pieces! View F is a circle skirt with a yoke. There's approximately five metres of hem so, if you have difficulty with hand sewing, as I do, your blind hem option on your machine is a life saver. I get lots of compliments when I wear this skirt.
I’d love to know how to do that? I have a big 10” difference between my waist and hips so ended up cutting them up in frustration after I made them, looked like I had a big nappy on from behind! Front looked great though….although probably an inch too high. Ps I am 5’ 0…
@@jammymommy yes, it does say in instructions to insert invisible side zip if large difference and to remove some width from back, I just don’t know where to remove width from nor how much! I’m working on getting.a better fit on my Walk Boldly trousers and then I’ll whip up a few in the Ponte I’ve been accumulating from Legend Textiles. Can’t remember if you tried the Ilford Jacket for a quilted jacket (yet 😂) but that’s on my list for this year too.
