But it was Joe Montana, who led the 49ers on a 92-yard, game-winning drive late to help the Niners claim their 3rd Lombardi Trophy of the decade.

They really should take down all the 49er games, because samaras Co. didn't beat one decent team in any of those victories . Quick, excellent report. Name any one of those teams that San Francisco beat ? And then tell us about the records of those losing teams in the year after the Super Bowl . All those teams , just stunk it up, and didn't deserve to be in the Super Bowl . It's bad enough we have to listen to all these gay guys who want to have Joe Montana's baby. He is not anywhere as close to a GOT. He is the MOOAT, simply the most overrated of all time. Just delete him from the NFL. The man has no arm, and could barely throw a decent out pass . He also locked into the first NFL iteration of the "West Coast offense ." Which the Niners coaches stole, from Brigham Young University, and yet were they do believe that it was a genius coach ? MOOAT

I lived in the Bay Area when that game happened. I was with friends at a superbowl party at their home and was near devastated thinking they might lose. One of the guys there comforted me saying. "just watch Montana do his magic" and indeed that final touchdown throw had my jumping and screaming. The ride home from Burlingame that night on El Camino Real was like a party zoo. Everyone was on the top of their cars celebrating reveling. What a GREAT memory.

George Seifert's Elephant defense (which has been emulated in Seattle under Pete Carroll), NEVER got enough credit for his impact on that 49ers dynasty. After he became the d-coordinator in 1983, the 49ers were top 5 in defense EVERY YEAR except THIS year, when they dropped all the way to...eighth. And then only allowed one offensive TD in the entire playoffs.

I remember watching them go to Soldier Field in the NFC Championship when most pundits had picked the Bears, and dominate 28-3. This was when the Bears were still the "Monsters of the Midway" too - Walter Peyton, Jim McMahon, Willie Gault and that defense. Montana and the Niners picked them apart and dominated them.

Shoutout to my uncle Ickey Woods's teammate and fellow 1988 Bengals rookie, Rickey Dixon. The Bengals former first round pick is battling Lou Gehrig's Disease that his family thinks was brought on in part by concussions that were undiagnosed and/or misdiagnosed. Congrats Rickey on making the College Football Hall of Fame and to his wife Lorraine, you're an angel. Remember, as much as we love the game, it does take a toll on the men who play it and the families that love and support them.

Quarterbacks, running backs, linebackers, and most players now, should be judged very differently. The game is much safer now, and the players before the salary cap, and the year 2000 should be judged as almost different leagues. In recent decades; the NFL is much safer. Your uncle Rickey had to have been very talented and athletic to be in the game at all. People don't know how brutal the game was then.

This game was my introduction to football. I remember in gym class, my coach always wore these cool looking, black Bengals sweat pants with orange tiger stripes, and was so hyped for the Super Bowl, I had to check it out. At the start of the game, I was rooting for the Bengals. Then, Jerry Rice changed my mind. At my friend's house the day after, I agreed to finally play this game called "Tecmo Bowl" with him, one of his favorites. After that day, he never played against me again, and became a lifetime 49'ers rival. Truth be told, if "fan stats" were somehow recordable (from video gaming, school games, neighborhood pick-up games, holiday season games with family & friends, etc...), it would equate to a "Hall of Fame" fan career, lol. And now in 2024, the 49ers are back in the Super Bowl! Gooooooo niiiiiiiii nerrrrrrrs! 🌉🏟🏆🎆💪🏾.....🤲🏾🏈🏃🏾‍♂️💨

Joe Montana is so clinical in the clutch, SB's are team accomplishments, but the fact that he was 4-4, had 1142 yards, 13 total touchdowns and didn't throw an interception in any of them is kind of insane. What's even crazier about this game in particular is that he had 357 yards and 2 touchdowns, yet this was the only Super Bowl he didn't win MVP, because 215 of those and a touchdown also belonged to Jerry haha.

A couple of notes about this game. First, given that the Bengals were the highest scoring team in the NFL in 1988 and had the NFL's MVP in QB Boomer Esiason, the mere fact that they did not score an offensive TD shows just how good and underrated the defense on those 49ers teams really were. In fact, in their four Super Bowl wins in the 80s (XVI, XIX, XXIII, and XIV), the 49ers' defense gave up only five offensive TDs, and two of those were when the games were in hand.
Also, it was almost universally believed that John Unitas was the greatest QB in the history of the NFL up to this point, but what Joe Montana did, bringing the 49ers back, combined with what he had accomplished in previous seasons and the '88 post-season, which included two blowout wins leading up to Super Bowl XXIII, changed my mind, and eventually, most people's minds changed regarding who's the greatest QB ever, and to me, Joe Montana now holds that distinction, though if he wins a fifth Super Bowl, Tom Brady may surpass him, given that he already holds the records for most Championship Game and Super Bowl appearances at 9 and 6, respectively, and also shares the record with Ken Stabler (1973-'77) for leading his team into five consecutive conference championship games.

cjs83172 another thing about this Super Bowl is this game had no business even coming down to a last second touchdown by the 49ers. Even with the mostly thrilling Super Bowls of the last 15 or so years, this one still belongs in anyone's Top 10 for Best Super Bowls. Bengals D kept them in it by holding the Niners out the end zone for such a long period in the game. Niner D kept the Ickey Shuffle in check, preventing them from utilizing their play-action game that put them in the SB to begin with. And no guarantee the outcome is different if Billups holds on to the pick in the end zone; there was still a lot of time left in the game.

But they definitely should’ve won both this and maybe even 16.
Both were lost due to turnovers, and defensive collapses.

After growing up in MN and watching the Vikings go to the Superbowl and LOSE 4 times...I moved to the Bay Area (CA). I was thrilled to watch my new team go to the SB and WIN 5 times. I will never forget Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Steve Young and the rest of the 49ers. Many of their records still stand to this day. NFL players should study those old games to learn how to play football. Brock Purdy is one of the few QB's that might become another Joe Montana or Steve Young if he keeps playing like he is doing now. I wish them luck to go again to the SB and WIN again. GO NINERS !
