What do you mean how? The Patriots were just 11-5 and one tuck rule away from being eliminated. The Rams were 14-2, had the #1 offense and the #3 defense, by far the best team in the league. Every top 10 super bowl upset list will have this game in their list. NFL.com ranked this game #3 upset of all time
Got to remember that Brady wasn't known as the GOAT back then, but just the kid starting for the first time in his career in 2001 after Bledsoe's injury. No one would've thought that the Pats would come this far this year especially after facing a dangerous Raiders team in the Divisional round.
The Rams were undefeated on the road that year only losing 2 games that season at home they beat the Patriots in the regular season that season. They were the Greatest show on Turf with Warner, Faulk, Holt, and Bruce and in this superbowl against the Patriots. The Patriots defense dominated the Rams offense. This was a upset because the Rams were favored to win and if would've they won this game they would have been a dynasty
TKS Films Looking at betting odds, there have only been 5 instances where a team was favored by double digits in the superbowl and lost. Favre was favored by 11 against Elway and lost. Len Dawson and the Chiefs beat the Purple People Eaters and the Vikings, after the Vikings were favored by 12. The Patriots lost in 2007 to the Giants after being favored by 12. Joe Namath beat the Colts after the Colts were favored by 18. In this game, Warner and the Rams were favored by 14 and lost. According to Vegas, this is the second biggest Superbowl upset ever. Only one superbowl besides the Joe Namath game had a more lopsided spread than this one, SF vs SD where SF was favored by 18.5 and won by 23.
17:37 - Jeff Wilkens makes 50-yard FG 26:57 - Wilkins misses 52-yard FG 34:30 - Ty Law intercepts Kurt Warner and returns it for a TD 47:16 - Ricky Proehl fumbles and Patriots recover 53:38 - Tom Brady throws 8-yard TD pass to David Patten 1:20:17 - Warner is intercepted by Otis Smith 1:24:00 - Adam Vinatieri makes 37-yard FG 1:37:10 - Warner sneaks for 2-yard TD 1:56:24 - Warner throws game-tying 26-yard TD pass to Proehl 1:59:32 - Patriots begin game-winning drive 2:03:56 - Vinatieri makes game-winning FG as time expires

Brady's first ever Super Bowl was called by Madden and Summerall. That is one hell of an honor. R.I.P John Madden...........I only wished he was around long enough to see the Super Bowl.
As much as Tom Brady and Adam Vinateri deserve some credit for winning this game, that Patriots defense seriously deserves over 80% of the credit. Taking on one of the all time greatest, most potent, powerful offenses ever to have played in the NFL. They prepared so much and worked SO HARD to get there, and they did it, they won. And they deserved it. Teddy Bruschi, Ty Law, Tebucky Jones, Willie McGinest, Mike Vrabel, Lawyer Milloy, Richard Seymour.... Together, they were nearly unstoppable. Too bad they still don't get the credit they deserve. Neither does Drew Bledsoe. Especially here in New England. He certainly doesn't get a ton of credit because once Tom Brady stepped up, Bledsoe was all but forgotten about and tossed aside. He was an amazing QB in his prime. That's for damn sure.
Round 2, here we go! Though, I believe that Brady and Belichick are the only ones still with the Patriots. I don't think anyone from this Rams team is still with them.
the 1988-1990 49ers offense was better than the rams...not as explosive but far more consistent and reliable when it mattered most...how many points did the rams score in SB34?nobody held the 89 49ers in check for half a superbowl.
Austin H define better...that 49ers offense was more consistent and reliable with fewer flaws-they could score more pts/tds against a great defense while committing fewer TOs...How many pts did the rams manage to score during the 99 NFCCG?How many tds did they put up against the Pats defense 2 yrs later in SB36?..They were more prolific, faster at WR, but not as tough or complete, and every WR was a finesse player who couldnt take a Steve Atwater caliber hit without falling down let alone bounce off it and run another 10-20yds into the endzone the way Jerry Rice did during SBXXIV...The stats dont begin to do that team justice and even Jerry Rice's records cant really encapsulate how great he was...Yeah Moss and those speed demons in St Louis could go deep or burn people after the catch, but nobody ran routes better than Rice, nobody was more fearless across the middle or blocked better than he did, 30-50+yds down field springing John Taylor after the catch for 2 50+yd catch and run TDs in the same game...Rice may have been the best football player ever....SB TDs in 3 different decades and 2 different centuries/millennia... Toughness aside under Head Coach Mike Martz they were quite turnover prone...If you wanna suggest that the 99 Rams were the best offense since Montanas 49ers or from the post Elway NFL in general I wont argue...Id rather have the 99Rams than the 07Pats 04 Colts or 2013-14Broncos because all of them got shut down and beaten in the playoffs, and none of them featured a RB as great as M.Faulk....
dp233332 This is fair. I cant argue Rice was the best WR of all time and one of the best NFL players of all time and I can admit that as a Rams fan. Montana was the most clutch Qb of all time. Your probably right that the 49ers were more consistent and the Rams were more explosive. Faulk was such a matchup nightmare because of his receiving skills. Bruce, Holt, and Hakim were definately not physical receivers which made there careers last longer imo. They werent running through anyone anyway lol. A few factors came into play in this SB though. Warner had a injured thumb and it clearly effected his throws. Also the spygate stuff. At times it did seem like the Pats knew what the Rams were doing. They definitely knew stuff and game planned for them. Im not taking anything away from the Pats but that defense wasnt great but played like it on this day for sure. The Rams did all this before all the rule changes that helped offenses later on (which benefited the Colts,Pats offenses etc moving forward/Pats defense was the reason alot of the newer rules exist lol). Dont forget that Bucs defense the Rams faced lead them to a SB win with freaking Brad Johnson at QB. That team had like 3-4 HOF defensive players on it. (Lynch, Sapp, Brooks, Barber).
dp233332 How do we know what was on those tapes when Goodell destroyed them? Do you believe everything the NFL is telling us? They should have been released to the public. It makes me think the NFL didnt want the public to view those tapes for a reason. Maybe the tapes were nothing but why not just show us if it was nothing? We will never know now so its hard not to speculate as a fan of a team that was possibly effected. The Rams did mismanage Warner and it has effected us with years of losing.

Great Clutch Performance by Brady and Terrific work by that defense. Great job by Vinatieri. Brady did Game manage in this Game but performed unbelievable in the clutch. Great start a becoming a dynasty.

Since Tom Brady announced his retirement today “officially” thought it’s fitting to watch his first ever Super Bowl game. Unbeknownst to me, it’s his rookie year as well. Wow
It happened a few months after 9/11! I never forgot when they announced that they would not introduce the individual's name. They came out as a team! It was fitting for everything to honor the firemen out there, especially in NYC!
Beginning of a Patriots dynasty that gave us 20 years of excellence is pretty cool. The Greatest Show on Turf with Warner, Bruce, Holt, and the great Marshal Faulk is absolutely one of the greatest things I've ever watched But I'm here for the last game called by Madden and Summerall
This brings such a tear to my eye. Back then, no one gave the Patriots a chance. The Rams were the envy and power of the NFL, and the Patriots were the biggest punching bag at the time. We choked twice before. But this time, we didn't! We didn't go down so easy and we pulled the miracle that began a Revolution in Boston; a dynasty! And the rest, as they say, is history
The Patriots dynasty revived Boston sports after the Celtics playoff run ended. Then the phenomenal 2004 ALCS comeback and Red Sox WS win happened when the Patriots won their third title.
@Jeffrey Smith Visit yourteamcheats.com to see how literally all 32 NFL teams have past cheating incidents. Cheating (seeking an advantage by any means) isn't unique to the NE Patriots. It isn't even unique to the NFL - it happens in every professional team in every league on this planet.
Patriots are the best team in 21th Century. And it's not even close. Brady is already in GOAT Conversation. and Bill Belichick probably the best coach of all time(SB ERA)
Chad Dee You're right, without Brady and Belichick this team will be average at best, maybe they will find another "GOAT" Coach and QB, but to be honest I doubt it.
It’s amazing there wasn’t another overtime NFL championship nor super bowl that went to overtime for the rest of Pat Summerall’s life after the 1958 game he played in (he died in 2013).
Thus began the legacy of Tom Brady, a Hall of Fame QB for sure. It shall be a sad day for the world and for sports if he departs this realm too soon. He is The God of the Gridiron.
A 24 year old Brady he was definitely more on the “game manager” side in this Super Bowl but his composure this early into his career is what’s made him the goat we see to this day
One thing you can't deny is that all 7 of the Super Bowls that Brady has played in can easily all rank in the top 10 super bowls of all time. Pure entertainment is every single one.
Brady played in 10 (Ten) Super Bowls, and all of them were fantastic. Brady WON 7 Super Bowls. And, for the three that he did not win: One of them he threw for a record 506 Yards (Belichick BENCHED their top CornerBack putting the Defense in a bad spot), and in the other two games Brady had his Team AHEAD with only 2-minutes to go but the Patriots Defense could not hold it for him. So Brady very nearly won TEN Super Bowls (and with just a little better support would have).
WOW, Brady's first ever super bowl pass from the 2 yard line with no room, throws a 20 yard dart to Troy Brown..who'd of thought he would have the most accomplished playoff stats in the history of the NFL back then
Madden said he would have played for overtime, and Brady said "I play to win". And that is the difference, that is why he ended up with 7 rings to Madden's 1 ring.
What shouldn’t be forgotten is that this was Madden and Summerall’s last game together. I remember looking forward to hearing these two call the games as a kid. They had great chemistry together.
Who's here after Brady announced his retirement 😢 I'm a raider fan and I'm truly going to miss watching the 🐐 of the NFL sling passes on Sundays. Thank you TB12 ❤
Tom Brady even back then didn't look like he was in a hurry on that last drive he have always looked super cool in the last 2 mins but what the hell was they doing giving up a 17-3 lead in the 4th

Brady still has a cannon for an arm and is the most accurate in the game. He doesn't need to move much since he maneuvers away from pressure in the pocket and passes the ball quickly.
True but he could not throw his way threw a paper bag in this game. Mike Martz won this game, not Belichick, not the Patriots. He handed it to you on a silver platter. Love this Super Bowl, two great teams battling it out. Brady was a beast even here. This was commentary was full of knowledge and, at it's best. Great commentary, by John Madden and Pat Summerall.
The 2000 Orange Bowl between University of Michigan and Alabama, which Tom Brady won, surely would define his future 20-year NFL career. That game has almost all the ingredients of a winning formula that has produced 7 rings on his fingers. That game was a showcase of his natural talents, which a lot of people missed, especially NFL recruiters, and explained why he is today still the comeback "kid"... the master......and now, THE GOAT. Watch it.
Yea thats what he was the ultimate teacher... as a coach and an commentator .. watching this made me miss his football knowledge and the ability to explain it so easily and quickly during the game after each play... Romo is probably closest ive seen so far in terms of overall knowledge of the game but he tends to really only look from a quarterbacks or offensive players perspective which makes sense .. madden knew the ins and outs and everything in between about football
Realistically, this is by far the most impressive win of Tom and the Bill's careers. The two best teams the Patriots beat that season were the 11-5 Dolphins and 10-6 Jets. They lost to both teams as well, and the only great team they played in the regular season were these Rams. They lost. 9 of their 11 wins were against very bad teams, so the fact that the Patriots took down a 14-2 experienced St Louis Rans team with the MVP at QB, is remarkable.
And it was when the worst nightmare of the NFL teams began, The Patriots arose from the depths of the earth, and let it be known that New England exists!!!! I'll be honest I met them in 2006, but I did not know anything about this sport , I am Latino and a friend introduced me to this addiction, and when I watched the Patriots play for the first time, I fell in love, I don't know what happened, I liked it, I can't explain it, and I think it's the most magical way for a person to become a fan of a sports team, since that day I am a Patriot, I am proud to say it to the world.

The last game John Madden and Pat Summerhall announced together now they are reunited in heaven
one of the biggest upsets in super bowl history.
Peezster how
What do you mean how?
I can't say enough about Adam Vinatieri and his NFL career great man great athlete
Who’s here in 2019 getting ready for this rematch?
facts
Hopefully the Rams will get their revenge.
Just like the Eagles did last year.
And the Patriots lose back to back Super Bowls.
I guess anyone who is alive, saw the first matchup, and gives 2 sh!ts about football. next question: is water wet?
Here
😁
17:37 - Jeff Wilkens makes 50-yard FG
26:57 - Wilkins misses 52-yard FG
34:30 - Ty Law intercepts Kurt Warner and returns it for a TD
47:16 - Ricky Proehl fumbles and Patriots recover
53:38 - Tom Brady throws 8-yard TD pass to David Patten
1:20:17 - Warner is intercepted by Otis Smith
1:24:00 - Adam Vinatieri makes 37-yard FG
1:37:10 - Warner sneaks for 2-yard TD

NFL Way to spoil the game for people who haven't seen it. I watched the game when it happened but it's not like I remember every detail. Also it's not the full game because you skipped the National Anthem and halftime show.

this was the beginning of a legend, the maximum winner of the Super Bowl Tom Brady, 2002-2004-2005-2015-2017-2019-2021
Brady's first ever Super Bowl was called by Madden and Summerall. That is one hell of an honor.
R.I.P John Madden...........I only wished he was around long enough to see the Super Bowl.
Lucky for him ,this one is skippable. Oh, unless you wanna see Bilge "perform " woooo who da hell don't

Tom Brady may be the only player still playing from both teams combined even the rookies are probably retired. Now that is incredible!!?

Not even in the same class as Montana or Aikman.
richard gere Aikman? lol
richard gere aikman hahahaha
L Haters will be all kinds of ridiculous
Rodgers is better.
Kurt Warner is my favorite QB of all time. I just love his demeanor.
Those last 5 minutes are INSANE!!! Some serious historic stuff going on.
Your dumb ass knows that claim was completely false, but here you are spouting it anyway. Pathetic hater.
Brian Jenkins stfu you salty ass hater spreading false ass claims
randomname349 tbh we'll never know the true extent. The tapes were destroyed almost immediately by Goodell's orders

Oh my God I love the internet Tom Brady was only 23 years old in this game thanks for bringing moments like these back to life

No you’re the only one. Out of the millions of nfl fans you’re the one person who came back to this.
Maybe....
I’m a lifelong 9ers but not afraid to admit Brady is my favorite player of all time
“What Tom Brady just did gives me goosebumps.”
How many times have we said this since then?
TB12 put it perfectly during a tv special years ago: "great QBs perform well under pressure"
As a Rams fan, rewatching this hurts man. Pats defense played a hell of a game though vs the best offense of all time.
the 1988-1990 49ers offense was better than the rams...not as explosive but far more consistent and reliable when it mattered most...how many points did the rams score in SB34?nobody held the 89 49ers in check for half a superbowl.
dp233332 Wasnt better but was very good sure.
Kurt Warner had he won this SB or the year in Arizona it would have elevated him above many QBS, so underrated. I am a patriots fan btw
this super bowl game was the happiest day of my life. when my new England patriots won our first super bowl victory against the greatest show on turf st louis rams.and I will remember it to the day I die.go patriots. diehard newenglandpatriots fan

Holy s*** that was amazing Tom Brady's first touchdown pass 2 number 86 receiver David Patten when he jumped over the defender and caught a crazy pass from Tom that was Tom Brady's first and best touchdown pass at the Super Bowl
Great Clutch Performance by Brady and Terrific work by that defense. Great job by Vinatieri. Brady did Game manage in this Game but performed unbelievable in the clutch. Great start a becoming a dynasty.
This was the final time John Madden/Pat Summerall called a game together.
Crazy.
I wonder what Pats thought was at that moment. Like this is it huh? Its over.
After that lazy ass call of a SB winning kick no wonder it was the end, Summerall sounded like he was asleep and someone just woke him up.

The 🐐's story begins.
Beginning of a Patriots dynasty that gave us 20 years of excellence is pretty cool.
The Greatest Show on Turf with Warner, Bruce, Holt, and the great Marshal Faulk is absolutely one of the greatest things I've ever watched
But I'm here for the last game called by Madden and Summerall
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. The patriots cheated
The Greatest Show on Turf died this night.
GurahkWeavile and now everyone hates the Patriots because they win all da time
GurahkWeavile patriots didnt choke in 1985 and 1996, they just went against superior teams
The Patriots dynasty revived Boston sports after the Celtics playoff run ended. Then the phenomenal 2004 ALCS comeback and Red Sox WS win happened when the Patriots won their third title.

Hard to believe the Patriots were once a cursed franchise until this game.
The beginning of Tom Brady’s legacy was also the end of Pat Summeralls legacy! What a game this was!
Quite a bookend for Pat Summerall. That Giants Colts game he played -- and this last game as a broadcaster.

A 24 year old Brady he was definitely more on the “game manager” side in this Super Bowl but his composure this early into his career is what’s made him the goat we see to this day
sounds like what mac is right now
John Madden's last commentary in the Super Bowl was the first Super Bowl win for the Patriots! I'll never forget! R.I.P! 🙏❤️
he did 3 more after this. this was Pat’s final though.
I'm just here to say that the Patriots are SUPER BOWL 53 CHAMPIONS !!! What a dynasty .. Tom Brady really is AMAZING
R.I.P to the legend John Madden🕊
Watching these again as Brady retires. Memories 🥲
he unretired
Okay now you can say he retired
i like how the first and last SB tom brady was in as a patriot was vs the rams
WOW, Brady's first ever super bowl pass from the 2 yard line with no room, throws a 20 yard dart to Troy Brown..who'd of thought he would have the most accomplished playoff stats in the history of the NFL back then
Madden said he would have played for overtime, and Brady said "I play to win". And that is the difference, that is why he ended up with 7 rings to Madden's 1 ring.
What shouldn’t be forgotten is that this was Madden and Summerall’s last game together. I remember looking forward to hearing these two call the games as a kid. They had great chemistry together.
Buck and Aikman at their best can't match Madden and Summerall at their worst.
Who's here after Brady announced his retirement 😢 I'm a raider fan and I'm truly going to miss watching the 🐐 of the NFL sling passes on Sundays. Thank you TB12 ❤
Appreciate you and thanks for everything David Patten

True but he could not throw his way threw a paper bag in this game. Mike Martz won this game, not Belichick, not the Patriots. He handed it to you on a silver platter. That #12 on the Patriots looked he had a great future ahead of him....
this is the first superbowl i remember watching when i was 9 yrs old. glad to see tom brady still doing work!
The Brady era is now officially over :(
But the writing was on the wall this past season, especially his final game against Dallas.
Watch it.
I miss John Madden as an announcer. He was easy to listen to and just wanted to teach people about football, good stuff man.
Feels a lot like 2001. Superbowl 53 here we come!! 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
And asor announced by tomo romo
and we won!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY T.B.☝🏽✌🏽.. WARRIOR 🤴🏽
