Didn’t realise how much freedom I had growing up in the new South African until I was old enough to learn how bad it is for us in other countries. So grateful for all our African liberators who made a free & democratic South Africa possible
As a black American gay man, I have lived in both Cape Town and Johannesburg, South Africa, and both are great gay cities to live in! Cape Town is the most beautiful city in the world. Meanwhile, Johannesburg is one of my favorite cities in the world. Going to Johannesburg was a pilgrimage for me. It was like entering Wakanda. They actually have a black middle class, and you can see black people thriving and being whoever they want to be. I've been to the Rec Room AND the Factory. Both great spots. However, my favorite sex club to visit was Camp David in nearby Pretoria, the nation's capital.
This is very surprising, enlightening and encouraging information for me. After reading so many sad stories of gay discrimination and hate crime violence in Africa, I thought both of these South African cities would be unwelcomingly, dangerous places to visit. Thank you so very much. ✊🏾❤🏳️🌈☮️💪🏾
My bucket list is to visit Johannesburg one day. It is comforting to know that it is very LGBTQ+ welcoming. I just really hope that most of their venues and establishments are local, Black South African owned and operated.
It's great to know that south Africa is becoming a great lgbtq friendly country, because most of those African nations still push hatred and false information against the LGBT community by imposing laws that prevents us of many things, but we still got alot of work to do,and by banding together we'll accomplish our goals of achieving it.
I'm shocked and surprised to see this video about the gay lifestyle in South Africa. I have heard nothing but negative comments and how people have been jailed and and must stay deep in the closet with their life style. It's also good to hear hoe the country is trying to combat the HIV situation there. Good for those two cities.
Each country have their own queer culture, voguing and ballroom is a western one that was made by the Black and brown LGBTQ community in the west, it's slowly taking roots here but it's not something most gay people in Africa like or are used to
I googled some of the venues and club you mentioned, Ill be honest they seem to cater to a overwhelmingly white crowd with blacks as the minorities which is crazy because this is Africa. Even the bathhouses that you mentioned seem to cater to white audiences there's hardly any black people in their advertising which is very telling. I want to experience the black LGBT community of South Africa I have been searching to no avail. I came across your channel although your research is nicely done. I still haven't found what I am looking.
There is no exclusively black queer places as most black South Africans live on the poor side of town where queer people are hardly tolerated. Remember South Africa ranks as the country with the highest level of inequality in the world. Please fact check with Google.
most of the gay spaces in South Africa where I have been was with exclusively other Africans. Like with anywhere in South Africa, it depends on who you choose to surround yourself with and the spaces you choose chill at. A lot of the marketing for the clubs in SA is hella problematic. South Africa needs to be experienced, not googled.
@@leosonbentley2770 The marketing is very misleading the show white men in their pictures or flyers on their website. I'll see one black man on the advertisement but it will be the back of his head or he'll be a background character that's it. Im like why?

I had no idea Africs had two gay capitals. 😎
Now I dont know if they call themselves that, but it made for a cute title 😆❤🖤💚💛💜
I guess the first gay capital would be Lagos? lol 😂
@@kingkaaiz NOt at all. In Lagos there are nooo gay places and it is against the law to be gay.
As a Nigerian, this is a lie..... although there are gay places and clubs but they are underground just like other anti LGBTQ countries @@kingkaaiz
@@vazefiluca3298Just because there’s laws against it doesn’t mean people don’t still fool around
