Wow! These last 3 videos are so incredible! I think the magic of your journey, any journey, is to go somewhere that is so far from home, it is almost unrecognizable! So incredible. I also want to extend an invitation to come visit the states and cycle here. I from NC originally but now live in Florida. Come cycle to the keys! Also, seriously consider the west coast. So much to see. I lived in LA for years. The route from San Francisco to Los Angeles is breathtaking! Cheers and be safe. ✌️
A great vlog with amazing footage once again. A tip for washing your hands at the tsukubai set at a temple, don't let the water flow off your hands back into the wash basin. Wikipedia has a good explanation of how to use it.
Just seeing the exit sign, I knew which country you landed in. I live here. I have to agree with you wind is so hard to cycle in, even when it's flat, we can hardly move. At least hills we can see it but wind is so hard to gauge.
OMG I love this change of plans. So exciting! I knew instantly it would be Japan. As the suspense built, I started to second-guess myself, and thought maybe Korea or China. But wow very cool episode you guys! Much love!
You dodged a bullet going to China. It's no longer a very cycle friendly country nor a foreigner friendly country. We did a similar trip a couple of years ago and ran into countless issues with police turning us away constantly. We ended up calling that section of the trip quits and going somewhere a little more inviting to continue. Live these videos
Haha, Thanks Clay! That is really flattering 😉 There are many great cyclist around! Not all of them have videos and they do incredible trips nonetheless. Lots of props to those guys and girls rocking them pedals without social media stuffs!!! 🤙🏼
How great is that!...really hope the change suits you as you beginning exploring this new culture. Best of luck to you...and if I haven't already said it...Happy New Year! Enjoy and stay safe!!
@@WheelstoWander We lived in a small town called Imadate, in Fukui-Ken, and it was post-card beautiful. We're hoping to go back and cycle Japan, possibly in two years. Enjoy your time there!
Glad for the change of venue for Maudi she was suffering for quite a long while. I hope Japan works out well though the videos ive seen show it to be lots of up and down. Safe travels.
Hey Larry, I had some tough times for sure and am happy with the change of plans! Although it was tough it's still one of the most special parts of the journey for us both 😊
Always stressing this sudden change of plan but you seem to go through very well! Very nice stories, nice filming and editing! Keep going, maybe will see you on the road, we are cycling too for a year, we passed 4 months in Peru and now we are in Thailand and heading to Laos and Vietnam in the months to come. I think your are in Vietnam now. Happy new year
Hi Sylvain! Nice to hear from you :.) We are in Vietnam now heading south... It would be really nice to meet up somewhere!? Perhaps we can chat through email...? All the Best & Happy New Years!!
This is so inspiring! I’ve only done one trip in Japan so far (also documented on TH-cam, let me know what you think if you like) but this is next level! Amazing 🚴🏼♀️
Guys another very enjoyable vlog. The change in scenery is impressive, from one country to another. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you both a happy New Year, may all your future plans come to fruition.
Hey Mike, yes it was quite a big transition. We certainly had to get used to it the first two weeks.... We did really enjoy the natural diversity after being in such a barren place for so long! We wish you a happy and inspiring start of the new year! 😀
@@WheelstoWander think I may fly into Seoul, down Korea then ferry to Japan, then across and up, I want to see Shikoku island as I like the idea of the temple pilgrimage around the island, but that is for another time.

Although the video doesn't show. Leading up to the border checkpoint and the Kyzylart pass is actually a very nasty very steep 6Km long climb. And many more steep climbs along the whole Pamir Highway. It makes it extra impressive what Karl has done.
I have crossed Canada and most of the way back and also Europe on a 3 speed Sturmy Archer bike but I don't consider myself anywhere as intrepid as you guys
Another very nice video. Also, sometimes you can have too much adventure and I think coming to the "convenience" of Japan was a good choice at that point. Too bad your vids are so far behind real time: you could have stayed at our place.

Wheels to Wander Yes and no. Japan occupied Taiwan at one time, so there are some architectural remnants & cultural similarities, but they are also so different & unique. Would be impossible for me to pick a favorite. But my ex girlfriend is from Taiwan, and i lived there longer, so it has a special place in my heart. I highly recommend you cycle there if you get the chance. Especially down the east coast. So so beautiful. Giant bicycles has their headquarters there, and it is a cyclist’s paradise. Hi Gasa! Thanks 😊 We hoped to visit Indonesia but our budget is running out so we will have to visit next time we are in the neighbourhood. We would love to cycle there!! In SE Asia now!
It was time for a change and after discussing we agreed that a more dedicated tour of Kyrgyzstan had to wait for a future exploration. The country is amazing and beautiful. We would like to do a continuation of our plans through China, possibly into Pakistan and beyond.
This was filmed originally back in July (according to the date listed on this video) where are you currently now? What has been your cost so far in keeping up with your bike maintenances? How long do you think you'll continue to bike tour? i.e.: Lohan Guiverev another bike tourist; a young man who is from Canada and has ridden across America then to South America and has been on his bike now for over five years. He said by 2020 he will be in Europe somewhere. Do you get any body/muscle injuries from riding a lot? Looking to get answers before I do my bike touring so I know what to expect.
Hi Tracey, we're now in Vietnam. We follow Iohan as well, he's making some great adventure video's! We are planning to cycle on for at least half a year. Our budget is slowly running out and eventually we have to work again. In the beginning we had saddle sores which slowly got better over time, besides that we didn't have many problems. Some stretching really helps to stay flexible as well! We don't have an exact overview of our total costs for bike maintenance, we did invest in quality gear upfront (including bike material) and that really paid off... We didn't have much problems in the beginning of our trip except for a flat tire here and there. As you ride east replacement parts get cheaper unless you need specific parts that you can only order online. Some months we don't have any costs at all, but things can break unexpectedly and then suddenly we have to replace something and costs can add up from 10 to a 100 euro's... hard to say! When you spread the costs out, count on around 20 euro's a month for bike maintenance?!
@@WheelstoWander Thank you so much for the replies. They are helpful and happy riding forxsevwral more months. I hope your upcoming endeavors are exciting and good. :)
Yeah probably a good choice to avoid China, a friend of mine cycled there last year and was often forced by the police to stay in the most expensive hostel of whichever town he was passing through, there are really nice bits of China but lots of restrictions and corruption, especially when the state deal with foreigners. We have to make the same decision at the end of central asia next year and will probably cycle through India unless China suddenly decides to use a 21st century visa policy :D geniet van Japan jongens!
It's a real problem in Xinjiang. Where the Chinese officials are extremely suspicious of foreigners because of the Uyghurs unrest, especially if you have a camera in your hands. My friend got detained six times by the police, and had to stay in detention centers overnight for no reason. The police will search through all the photos in your phones, your cameras and laptops. And install some app in your phone to track you, very scary. After leaving Xinjiang, it's mostly fine.
@ Cycle our World, I wouldn't count on it this 21th century policy! 😉 We heard some unpleasant stories about China, people generally liked the south (Yunnan / Sichuan) more... You can get an E-visa for Pakistan so that could be a great continuation of your journey to India, this is what we wanted to do at first. You do have to cross Xinjiang, but we heard this part of the province is less of a problem to travel through. Don't forget to get the Chinese visa in your home country ;-)
Thank zerofighter, you're right (although we don't think the music is shitty 😉) it is a little out of balance! Someone mentioned it before and we're happy to receive constructive criticism 👌
