      cheers Barrie. I'm a bit of a lure nut and since there's not many predators I'm often limited. Will be doing some more species over then next 12 months for sure. Plenty of pike as usual but will keep mixing it up a bit.

    That was a nice chub. I don't think there's much a chub won't eat. I use small lures like that for pond fishing for bass. It's tougher later in the season as the weed grows so fast three very little clear water to fish unless you fish the big lakes. Love the topwater fishing though. Nice one Paul.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah you are right they will eat anything. do you have chub over there then?

    • @huntnfishnuts5880
      @huntnfishnuts5880 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +River Piker there is a smaller species of chub here. Creek chub and river chub but they don't grow very large. 6 inch would be a large one. They are popular for bait for pike and Muskie. Did not have chub in Ireland either. Are they in Europe or just England? Never seen any other video only from the UK.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they have chub in Europe but i'm not sure myself how big or where etc.

    Cracking videos mate. What would you recommend for shallow weedy rivers? I have been catching chub on floating bread crust but would like to try with lures. The trouble is there is a lot of surface weed as well. Are there any good weedless lures to use on or just below the surface?

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jamie. Surface lures for chub, you can sometimes find very small popper which are good. There are also tiny frogs same as the bigger bass/pike frogs and they are weedless. I'm sure eBay s the place to look or also may be try lurefactors as I'm sure Mark had some frogs on there last year.

  • @MarkCarp
    @MarkCarp 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    nice video again paul, just been reading the comments, I guess I've half seen the answer to this question but i'll ask anyway, why the preference for small cranks over the rubber lures like the kopyto?.

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Mark. I feel like I am lure fishing more with a crank than I do with soft shad. Probably just something daft only me thinks but that's one reason. I find soft shads a bit more boring and I prefer to swap and change cranks to try and suit the swims and crank, twitch and jerk to get a fish. The cranks do end up having their own little characteristics where a softie either sinks like a brick cos you have a heavy jig on, or sinks like a smaller brick if you have a lighter jig head on. lol
      Other than that, the other reason is they do catch a load of fish and often when softies just don't seem to work. Wait until you see next weeks video where cranks totally out fish the softies. Though it is horses for courses and some things a soft shad does a crank can't.
      Also i've got this weird thing where I don't always go fishing to catch. I go fishing to catch on a lure and then it can be a certain lure. I've gone fishing some days and used one lure. Deep down my tactical head says do this or that and you will catch, but my fun head says have a play with this lure and if you do catch that is a top result. I've caught fish before, probably not the most or not the biggest ever but I don't always just fish to catch. Yeah i know, i'm weird. lol

    • @MarkCarp
      @MarkCarp 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      River Piker I wouldn't say weird paul, it is a bit boring doing the same thing over and over again, for most of us we don't mind and just want to catch, I just see you as being at a more advanced stage of lure fishing than most, you know you can catch so you're looking for other ways to put fish on the bank and keep it interesting. You never know you may stumble across a killer method during your experiments?. 😁

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah mate, you actually do. I never think I know everything and always keep trying new things. We haven't figured out fish by a long way. There's loads of techniques i've never tried too.

    i dont know why people seem to think perch and chub are fussy when it comes to lure fishing, ive had chub on large roach dead baits and 19cm lip lures lots on 3" jigs and small cranks every time its been with 40lb wire haha

      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @BUSHCRAPPING

  • @stevedonaghy3832
    @stevedonaghy3832 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good video paul 👍, why do you not use the savage gear line through trouts anymore when your pike fishing?

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cheers Steve.
      Honest answer, they don't excite me as much as some other lures. What you will notice about most of my lures, same in this video, I prefer to use lures where I'm twitching, jerking and having to do something to make it dance. The line thru trout are a fantastic fish replica, but you cast it out and wind it in (speed it up slow it down if you want) and that doesn't excite me as much.
      Another reason is I have three and I need to make new traces for them and I haven't been arsed to sort them out. I will do though at some point and I was also thinking of how or if I could rig them differently. I have also just bought a new line thru in a smaller size to use on a small pike set up I just bought so expect to see that one at least, when i start pike fishing again. cheers

    • @stevedonaghy3832
      @stevedonaghy3832 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +River Piker i have 3 of the 15cm trouts too, haven't really used them but they're apparently very good for small pike.got a 20cm and excited to get out with it,thanks👍

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They look a perfect bait for smaller pike and I expect they will catch plenty of fish. But still a nice size to snag a big pike if they are about. Also on places that are pressured a small natural looking lure might work over a big noisy burt, for example.

  • @stevedonaghy3477
    @stevedonaghy3477 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    In ur opinion Is there a big difference between yogis and jointed shad raps and if there isn't y do u not use Rapala jointed shad raps for trout?

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Difference is mainly size. Even the 4cm shad rap is bulkier than the yogi. I have caught trout on the shad raps though, even 5cm size. The other main difference is the noise of a shad rap where a yogi is small. To be honest i'm not sure if that puts the trout off or not though. My trout box does ave one 4cm shad rap in it but mostly i would use the smaller profile or smaller size lures for trout. I'm fishing for sport so i want to catch plenty and so i try to suit the lure size to the fish I expect to catch in the smaller river. Trout though, especially the larger ones, will take big lures. Ask Ady how many he's had on 6 inch jerk baits, they are crazy. We've had a little dabble at trout this year and so far it was slow. Funnily enough, because were not catching much, Ady was using a yogi so i put on my jointed shad rap to see if that made a difference. Neither of us caught many still.

    I would always take a net, you never know when you might need it.
    Nicely landed though!

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Problem for me is I have two bags, lure bag and camera bag. Then I have my rod and also a tripod. If I had a net too it would be a nightmare to carry it all. I can hand land most of the chub but the problem with not having a net is that some swims I cannot fish because if I hooked one I couldn't then land it. So yes you are right Andy.

    Would salmon go for those lures

    • @riverpiker
      @riverpiker  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm no expert on salmon but can't see why they wouldn't. I've read they like straight retrieve lures. So a spinner for example. But I see them being caught on a few lures, from small plugs right up to big pike lures, though if you are targeting them I wouldn't use the big pike lures. Lures like the Flying C are a favourite for many salmon anglers. I've only ever caught one and it was on a copper blue fox spinner.
