Please be careful if ordering. The first recorder on her link isn’t the 415 recorder, it’s the standard Zenon G1A. If you scroll to the bottom, you’ll see the 415 version, and it’s more than twice as much! That said, it’s great to see an affordable 415 instrument for us altoists. Thanks for the review!

Hello, I'd want to ask: is there any difference between the 440 plastic Zen-on and the 415 one, other than the pitch? Can a review of the 415 one be applied to the 440 one? Thanks.

  • @garywest3763

Wow the Zen On G-1A sound is VERY similar to the expensive wooden recorder Very close to my ears, it may be different in person. I like the deeper tone of the 415 hz I ordered both of the ZenOn G-1A one in 440hz and one in 415hz to try and play with. I love the sound of a Tenor recorder, so the 415hz bridges the gap between the 440hz Alto, and a Tenor recorder. I bought my New Zen-On 415hz for $123.00 free freight, shipped direct from Japan through an EBAY seller.

Thank you Sarah for the nice review and I always really enjoy your happy videos. If you might allow me to add a little more explanation to it, the G-1A 415 is made through injection molding "machine" process which is the same as ordinary plastic recorder, and different from the Bernolin handmade which some people commented in this thread.

Hello Sarah, thank you for this video. I just love your instrument reviews.
Judging from what I hear in this video - I have never heard it live - it seems a nice instrument, but I'm not entirely happy about its higher notes.

I'm looking into going to a baroque music intensive this summer, which requires instruments used to be at 415 pitch. They have a few loaner instruments, but this sounds like a potential backup plan that costs an arm instead of an arm AND a leg. I can't justify paying wood prices for a 415 instrument that will only get used once in a blue moon thereafter, but this is possible. If I do decide to go for it, and pass the audition but don't get a loaner instrument.
I've seen them for sale in the Early Music Shop website.

A long time ago I made Gemshorns and three hole pipes (as well as some cylindrical bore recorders) and I sold instruments to EMS as well as to other people. Thank for your delightful videos and inspiring me to do more recorder playing. For many years rather than making recorder type instruments I tune organs (an instrument also known as a "Box of whistles")

EMS should give you a commission for the items I've bought from them as a result of your videos. :) I'm strictly a hobbyist, but purchased this one because a friend was getting a baroque instrument and asked if I had a 415 pitch recorder (which I did not at the time). So, I bought this one. I liked it so much that I just got the new Zen-on 440 recorder as well. (both from said seller)

One never knows when a 415 will be handy - for example my church's organ is tuned to 415 (a fact which was only discovered when a flute player tried a solo with it after it was installed about 4 years ago). We sometimes have the opportunity to collaborate with viols and it would be nice for them to not have to go through the arduous process of tuning up. I really like my Zen-on 440 alto, and am definitely thinking about the 415; need to do some thinking between this and the Bernolin.

    Love your videos.
    Just got my 415 plastic.
The 440 model came with a thumb rest while the 415 model didn’t.
I have never used a thumb rest for an treble recorder.
    I notice you don’t either.
    Any thoughts for/against thumb rests?

If you feel the recorder makes your hand hurt, use one.
      It's pretty simple.
I know pro players who use one so that's not a problem

Hello Sarah, nice review. I'd want to ask though: is there any difference between the 440 plastic Zen-on and the 415 one, other than the pitch? Can a review of the 415 one be applied to the 440 one? Thanks.

  • @anepictree

Thanks for the great review, I guess it has been out a while now and the recorder is widely available. I have just received mine from Woodbrass.com it came post free in about five days at 153 euros. I don't consider myself qualified to comment n the technical side, but I like the feel, I like the beak, mouthpiece, it is chunkier and wedge shaped not flat, I find this comfortable to blow on. It is more hungry for air than the Yamaha and less than Aulos. I do love the sound. It is really responsive to a variety of breath so even as a beginner I can hear the effects of tonguing and breath control well. For the price I don't like the finish much, it is a dull or matt finish, the finger hole inserts are not very attractive (I understand the technical reason for them being there) but at the price I feel the instrument could have been polished, the plastic join lines are very evident whereas on the Yamaha and the Autos the finish is very high quality and I prefer the shiny and slightly heavier feel. (the instruments are a third the price or less) There is no finger chart included which is ok, but it is the first instrument I ever acquired without one. It is lighter than the Yamaha and Aulos models. Really glad to have it, but it does make me want something with a little more care taken over the craftsmanship! Thanks for the videos as ever - please keep them coming. (some boring ones about how to really make progress with scales, how to make scales sound beautiful, how to play arpeggios in a really professional manner ) Thanks a million.

Sarah Jeffery / Team Recorder 415 means down a half step, which means that the alto recorder wouldn’t be in F anymore it would be in the key of E.

    • @RockStarOscarStern634
      @RockStarOscarStern634 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sarah Jeffery / Team Recorder If you held those 2 altos side by side the 415 is a bit longer than the 442 so it’s a bit lower meaning a C sounds as a B so that means it transposes down a half step.

I just received mine in the mail that I ordered, and it's the same day as the Queen's death. I'll always think of her when I play. I don't think she played recorder, but she had honorary music degrees and played piano. And regarding the recorder--I love it. The lower pitch really gives the notes depth, but the top end is a bit... thin. But still, good instrument. I think it's going to become my main practice instrument. I do notice I have to get used to the spacing of the holes, but that happens any time I get a new instrument. Takes me a few days to really "feel" the instrument.

Because this is new, I wouldn't trust ebay just yet to sell a G-1a except directly from Japan. Shipping costs from Aus or Japan are harsh. In America, Susato is the only vendor I could find online. There may be more. They sell both. www.susato.com/collections/zen-on ps. Several people do like the Zen-on 1500bn alto .. the older model.. I don't know how it compares, and the 1500bn does not come in A=415

If you'd like a wooden 415 without the price tag and have an old Mollenhauer Prima alto just buy a Mollenhauer Canta alto and swap the heads!!!! I did this by mistake because I wasn't wearing my glasses!!! I'm only an amateur and play for my own amusement. ...it might not stand up to professional standard but it suits a cheapskate like me😁!!!!!!
