  • I apply a band-aid to my sick patient of a modular patch in the shape of #makenoise Tempi. Do you approve of Sandy and I changing the name back to Modular Mondays even if films don't always come out on Mondays?
    Here's that clock divider: www.makenoisemu...
...and the clever looking multi axis sequencer: www.makenoisemu...
...oh and that #gamechanger audio sustain pedal I'm in love with: www.gamechange...

I like ‘Modular Mondays’ because it gives a natural idea of a weekly basis, eventhough I’m watching it every time I’ve got time, no matter the day. btw, I love your quest! Great soundings!

Sounds great. The piano fits very well. For my taste the DFAM is a bit high in the mix and would pull the soul strings a bit more if it was under the mix. I’ll be very interested in the journey to release an album!

F7ckin hell, that's an exciting announcement, Christian - not just what the vlogs of your journey will reveal, but primarily to hear your albums. I've just been to see Nils Frahm live, it strikes me that there are similarities with what you're putting together, but with a really interesting and individual slant from the modular stuff combined with your own background and experience. Can't blummin wait to hear what comes out of it. Plus the dancing - don't stop. If what you create makes you want to jig around, surely that's a good sign?

Hi Christian, good to see the patch didn't have to be started again. As a VCV Rack user pulling all the cables out scares me. One Question - given that you start with only the piano, what are you hearing from the headphones at the beginning/ throughout to keep things synced. Are you using one of the sounds from the modular rig as a click?

  • @stephendaley1577

Thanks for the new demo. I'm still at the modular sw emulation stage (VCV Rack, modules). It will be a while before I dive in. Some of that gear is pricey! - I'm looking forward to your perspective and ideas on creating an indie record label. I've entertained doing this myself, solely for my own music. But I wonder, outside of more control and possibly income, if owning and running a label for this purpose offers much benefit over no affiliation at all. Cheers.

Hey CH. I thought your piece there was quite nice. You achieved that hypnotic motion thing...don’t know a clinical term...that I think is at least one of the goals of doing an evolving electronic piece. I might have taken a different approach with that balls hammering kick sound, but over all, quite pleasant.
And I never knew you changed the name of Modular Monday...I haven’t been paying attention much lately from actually having some work [snoopy dance of joy]!!! But all seriousness aside, you could call it “Modular Spooge Monkey” for all I care...good content always carries it anyway. Cheers......

You have enough subscribers to get the album into the Top 40. Sounds like a journey to watch. I again really liked the Dfam but felt the modular sequence had to automated with distortion and compression when the beats come in as I felt the beat swallowed it. But the modular sequence sounded lovely. The piano also sounded great. Again I agree with you that it needs to be made listenable and you are certainly crafting towards this in a very nice way.

I love those sounds. Actually, I was a bit annoyed when you brought in the bass and that flutey main theme at the same time, because I was already enjoying that piano immensely, then the synth theme came in with that beautiful sound that I genuinely don't think I've ever heard before and really gave me the fizz, and then the great bass came in and drowned out the other sound before I'd had time to digest it. Great stuff though. I'm going to listen to it a second time now before I get to work myself. It's going to be a bit tough, because you have again inspired me to grab an instrument and turn on the looper pedal

Really interested in how you go about your new record label. I'm new to media composition so I'm often filling in time making my own stuff in between jobs. I'm planning how to release it at the moment so your timing couldn't be better. Will you release it under your own name or as a "project"? There seems to be a fairly even split at the moment, about half the artists I follow do all their work under their own name, the other half do composing/session recording under their name and then go by any number of names (depending on how varied their output is!) for the music they release themselves? For example at the moment I'm "Moray Macdonald, media composer and sound designer" and "Moray Macdonald, rock keyboardist session man", so adding "Moray Macdonald, maker of solo anthemic electronica" might just be a bit too schizophrenic!

  • @aefv.eliane

... At the beginning until now, “Modular Monday" was a good name-title to this kind of rendez-vous. But, last week, during a very short stay in London (sorry, I didn't had time to going to the Spitfire Audio HQ to said "Hello" to all of you) I really enjoyed and liked this new title-name “Modular Project”. That's sounds, more soft, less straight, under a smooth line from mind, more opened... because sometimes we need a bit more longer to reach this aim on the time. ... Because also our own life in privacy...
I felt also that as new important step for you, to improve, to increase something.
But this “Modular Xxxxx" each week, is your own and you are strongly involded with; I am not sure that you want this one writing in the marble but, more like a young tree growing up. :)
    Wishes Christian

  • @HistoryMaze

will be watching the progress with interest - self-releasing is not so hard (oo er mrs) - I've put out vinyl / cd / downloads etc - of course bandcamp is perfect for all this - the hard bit is getting the fans:) - my advice (not that you need it or asked!;) is do a very ltd run of vinyl, with downloads too - I have a hunch this is your plan anyway. You might find that the vinyl becomes collectible - some of mine have ended up in the rare record guide, with one selling for £200 second hand. This, in a roundabout , wonky way, opens your audience up even more. You said you want the lp to be all otb - personally - I wouldnt throw the baby out with the bathwater - simply because there are some amazing softsynths that can do things that arent poss with hardware..so you'd be constraining yourself (which I realise can of course help creativity, but still...).. and also, and perhaps more importantly....when doing experimental music, I've often found that being able to edit itb is an extremely powerful tool - the most amazing happy accidents can occur when you grab a short section - pitch shift, loop etc....all of this is so fast to do that it encourages experimentation, whereas with otb it's very cumbersome, and for that reason, you'll find yourself less likely to play around with mixing up odd elements that you recorded and seeing how they work together. saying all that - im imagining you're aware of all this and want to take the old-skool challenge:)

Really like the chords you came up with at the start of the piece, but found the entry of the drum sounds far to aggressive, insistent and in your face - a bit like the drunk guy that invades your personal space and insists on telling you over and over that not very funny anecdote whilst you are trying to slide away to enjoy a quiet pint.
I'm interested to see what you mean by "experimental" - as you probably know, there's quite a thriving experimental music scene in Edinburgh, and it covers a broad choir of things. I've just spent a few days immersed in the Dialogues festival and a lot of what I heard has been quite thought-provoking
